PROJECT TIMELINE

In December 1971, the UAE became a federation of six emirates Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, and Fujairah, while the seventh emirate, Ras Al Khaimah, joined the federation in 1972. The capital city is Abu Dhabi, located in the largest and wealthiest of the seven emirates.

7

About UAE The United Arab Emirates, sometimes commonly known as the Emirates, is a country in Western Asia located at the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders Oman and Saudi Arabia, and has maritime borders in the Persian Gulf with Qatar and Iran. The UAE is an elective monarchy formed from a federation of seven emirates, consisting of Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. Each emirate is governed by a Sheikh and, together, they form the Federal Supreme Council; one of them serves as President of the United Arab Emirates. In 2013, the UAE’s population was 9.2 million, of which 1.4 million were Emirati citizens and 7.8 million were expatriates; the estimated population in 2020 was 9.89 million. Islam is the official religion and Arabic is the official language. The UAE’s oil and natural gas reserves are the sixth- and seventh-largest in the world, respectively. Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi and the country’s first president, oversaw the development of the Emirates by investing oil revenues into healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The UAE’s economy is the most diversified of all the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, while its most populous city, Dubai, is a global city and international hub. The country has become less reliant on oil and gas, and is economically focusing on tourism and business. The UAE government does not levy income tax, although there is a corporate tax in place and a 5% value-added tax was established in 2018.

Out of the population of UAE 69% are male and the rest female 31%. With the total population of 7.2 M people among which 80% people are expats (a.k.a. Immigrants from various nations like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines) sets the diverse culture in this small ecosystem. Majority of the expats fall in the age group of 25 - 40, setting up the modern and trend friendly consumer group.

Islamic design Islamic geometric patterns are one of the major forms of Islamic ornament, which tends to avoid using figurative images, as it is forbidden to create a representation of an important islamic figure according to many holy scriptures. The geometric designs in Islamic art are often built on combinations of repeated squares and circles, which may be overlapped and interlaced, as can arabesques (with which they are often combined), to form intricate and complex patterns, including a wide variety of tessellations. These may constitute the entire decoration, may form a framework for floral or calligraphic embellishments, or may retreat into the background around other motifs. The complexity and variety of patterns used evolved from simple stars and lozenges in the ninth century, through a variety of 6- to 13-point patterns by the 13th century, and finally to include also 14- and 16-point stars in the sixteenth century. Geometric patterns occur in a variety of forms in Islamic art and architecture including kilim carpets, Persian girih and Moroccan zellij tilework, muqarnas decorative vaulting, jali pierced stone screens, ceramics, leather, stained glass, woodwork, and metalwork. This is where I explored various sites and tourist attractions to understand the aesthetics in vivid and context was to get inspired in incorporate with the design and brand language.

9

Architecture gems Architectural styles in UAE have changed significantly in recent years. While architecture was initially traditional, Dubai’s current modernist architecture features innovative exposed-glass walls, stepped ascending spirals and designs that offer subtle nods to traditional Arabic motifs. The Architecture of skyscapers and museums reflects its vast culture, heritage, and explosive growth and development of the city, making Dubai city undeniably exquisite with some of the world’s best architectural wonders.

Product Ideation This range of products were shortlisted which fits the scope of the brand. Coffee table as a product stands out in terms of scope and future aspiration of the brand where multiple inhouse expertise can be explored.

26

Types of table Coffee Table A coffee table is generally used in a living room or seating area and placed in front of the couch. You can place food on it, drinks, or use it to display coffee table books, plants, or small knick-knacks. Accent Table Accent table is a loose term used to cover a variety of table types, including end tables, coffee tables, and console tables. Don’t be afraid to get creative! A trunk, an antique chair, or a shelf can all double as accent tables. Most are small accent tables. C-table A c-table gets its name from its unique c-shape, which allows it to swivel around over a bed, chair, or couch. You can use it for a drink or to hold your book or laptop. Side Table As its name so aptly implies, a side table fits beside a sofa and provides a great place for a lamp or drink. Drink Table Drink tables are tiny and have just enough room for a drink. They can be tall but are usually on the shorter side.

27

Types of table End Table An end table is practically the same thing as an accent table. Bunching Table A bunching table can also be a type of coffee table or accent table; it merely refers to two or more tables that fit together or can be spread out. It’s a great option for a space-challenged home. Patio Table Patio tables are designed to handle the elements on a deck, porch, or other outdoor space (though some must be wintered indoors if you live in a harsh climate). Today’s patio furniture isn’t limited to ugly white plastic, however, and often looks nice enough for indoor use! Work Table Work tables are highly utilitarian (though not necessarily unattractive) and are usually built with a specific job in mind: woodworking, art, gardening, or other. They come in a very wide variety of sizes and finishes, depending on whether you decide to use them standing up, sitting down, inside, or outside.

28

Types of table tops

The most common shape for any kind of table, you can’t go wrong with four sides and four corners! Rectangular tables are often better fits for long, narrow places and in fact, can make themselves smaller than round tables and yet still cover a lot of ground. Whether you’re hosting a holiday meal for a crowd or fitting a work table into an unused closet, rectangles can fit the bill perfectly. Rounded tables are great for small spaces, where you need to fit as many people as possible around for a meal or discussion, or you need to get a drink table into a tight space next to the couch. Semi-circles, hexagons, octagons, diamonds, there’s nothing to say that you do not have to go with a traditional shape for a table; in fact, the more unique, the better. It probably an unconventional shape will be harder to track down. But it goes with the islamic design.

29

Type of table materials Glass is fairly low-maintenance though it will have to be cleaned frequently to avoid smears, smudges, and other marks. It also needs to be handled carefully as it can break and since it has sharp edges, it’s not a great choice for a space that needs to accommodate children. However, it can be both traditional and modern and add a very light touch to a room.

Industrial pieces (and sometimes modern pieces), metal can add great lines and depth of vision to your furniture, making your table a centerpiece. Unless you’re using something like copper, metal is usually very sturdy and largely impervious to damage. It is very heavy, however, so if you think you’ll be doing a lot of moving, you might want to stick to small metal accent tables. Also, metal should be sealed or painted to prevent rust, especially if you live in a very humid climate.

Solid wood is a fantastic choice if you want a table that’s durable and will stand the test of time. Usually not light, solid wood furniture can be sanded and re-stained or painted, which adds long term value to the table you’re buying (especially if you’re someone who likes to mix things up a lot!). Wood varies in softness, grain, and color, depending on the type of tree and the quality of the wood. Oak, for example, is often used for furniture because of its relative hardness and semi-affordability. Pine is often much more affordable but is also quite a bit softer than oak. Premium woods from South America and Asia can also be used and provide some impressive distinction in your home!

30

Marble is stunning! Because it hearkens back to Greek statues and Roman emperors, it’s a great choice to add drama or classic beauty to a room. It is not, however, a great choice if you need something that’s heavy duty. While marble tables come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, and finished edges, it scratches and etches easily and is one of the most high-maintenance options for a table top.

The most popular choice for tables today, wood veneer is an extremely thin panel of wood (usually less than 3mm thick) that has been glued onto core panels (usually another, cheaper wood or particle board)Veneer is nothing new. Ancient Egyptians even used rare and beautiful wood veneers over cheaper materials to create furniture and sarcophagi.Wood veneer is sometimes confused with laminate, but it’s completely different; since it is actual wood, it can be sanded down and re-stained (though this should be done very carefully). It’s typically lighter than solid wood furniture and more affordable, making it a great choice for most people looking for a larger table (such as a kitchen, dining, or conference table). Laminate is a man-made product that looks like wood but isn’t. It’s usually made of plastic that has been printed to look like wood. It’s typically a very affordable alternative to higher-end wood tables, but laminate that’s not high end can look very cheap very quickly. It also tends to have very poor resale value and not be as high quality. That said, there was a lot of laminate used during the 60s, and some of the better-made pieces have survived to this day. Sitting water is laminate’s nemesis. While sprays of water or liquid can be wiped down, if water sits it can soak through and cause the MDF or particle board underneath to expand. It also can’t usually be painted or refinished, so if you’re looking for a table that you will want to refinish at some point, don’t choose a laminate table!

31

Tables styles of today Industrial design makes use of materials common around the turn-of-the-century, notably exposed brick, distressed wood in natural stains, and exposed steel or other metal. This can be a really eye-catching design style and even if you live in an apartment and can’t reveal exposed beams or put up an exposed brick wall, an industrial table made from metal and wood can be a great way to add your own personal spin to your home. Industrial tables, especially, can be real works of art, with some seemingly composed of extant factory machines.

HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines undoubtedly put farmhouse style on the map thanks to JoJo’s sophisticated take (and noticeable lack of cute roosters in the decor) and ubiquitous shiplap. Today, the style is characterized by heavy, weathered wood and a return to craftsman details, such as over-the-door transoms and intricate molding. You’ll usually find big, white farmhouse sinks and aesthetic nods to the French and Italian countryside in lavender, greenery, and sometimes even stucco.

32

This one is similar to mid-century modern in that it utilizes clean lines and veers toward minimalism, however, true Scandinavian style makes use of white and light colors and rarely uses carpet or especially plush textiles, favoring clean, light-colored wood floors in shades of white or grey. White walls are ubiquitous, though some Scandinavian designers will utilize very modern, geometric color patterns in bedding, curtains, or wall art. What sets Scandinavian furniture apart is how useful it is. Usually slim yet elegant, tables are often made from engineered wood or metal and stained or paint in very light colors. Ikea was at least partially responsible for bringing the style to the United States and sells its furniture in ready-to-assemble boxes.

Mid-century modern refers to furniture created in the mid-1900s. It’s extremely popular today and for good reason: its natural, clean lines and use of organic and engineered ingredients are beautiful, comfortable, and very versatile. Mid-century modern pieces include iconic designs such as the tulip table, with its futuristic swoops and classic white color, the Eames Lounge Chair, knocked off constantly and even featured in sitcoms like Frasier, and the Womb Chair, also designed by Eero Saarinen because “more than ever before, we need to relax.” Outside of the classic tulip table (also called the Saarinen table), mid-century modern tables are characterized by their low profiles and honey-stained natural wood, often engineered plywood. You can find pieces that are uber modern and pieces that are more gently modern and casual.

Moodboard Geometric relating to a style of ancient Greek pottery characterized by geometric decorative motifs Symmetric is an exact matching of form and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a boundary, such as a plane or line, or around a central point or axis.

37

Eccentric Element is not placed centrally or not having its axis or other part placed centrally. Rhythm It’s a strong, regular repeated pattern of movement or sound.

Concepts Following the mood board the concept sketches jumbled around a bent angular rod frame with possible top shape options like circle or square which are symmetric in shape. The contrast of keeping the frame minimal and increasing the feasibility of the frame were adapted in this process leading to create final concepts.

38

Final Concepts The following concepts were shortlisted for the final stage of ideation based on the aesthetics and scope of the project.

39

In this frame these two frames of rods connect with each other as they pass through. The rods in the frame are 45 degrees from the vertical axis where all the rods connect the two adjacent sides of the rounded corner frame. Here the two frames are placed at 90 degree from each other as the diagonals of a square.

Bending profile

40

41

In this frame there are four sets of frames which start from each corner of the square till the center forming the symmetric in four directions. The rods in this frame are in the angle of loft transition of connecting two frames, i.e. top and base square frame. The quantity of rods vouches the feasibility of the structure, also inspired from the twisted modern architecture of skyscrapers.

Bending profile

42

43

In this frame the straight rods are in the direction of the loft transition of two frames i.e. top square frame and square base frame. The form structure seems like a twisted geometric body. The form demonstrates the modern architecture of skyscrapers which is prominent in the Emirates of UAE.

Bending profile

44

45

In this frame the rods are bent in this profile which seems as the cut cross section of an elliptical sphere connecting the base and the top frame. The wavy form is inspired from the tides of the sea which is significant to the culture and lifestyle of UAE.

Bending profile

46

Concept parameter

47

Optimization Scale 1:10 paper mockup model was explored to understand the strength and feasibility of the base. There were errors noted in terms of how the horizontal rod frames won’t be able hold the weight of the surface top. Also based on the strength of the rods it was assumed that the structure might wobble when pressure applied on the top that might affect the rod weld joineries resulting in collapse of the frame. There were iterations done on optimizing the frame with multiple rods and bent rods to increase the strength but there were chances to weld marks to be seen in such implementations. It was concluded on having sheet metal frames twice the thickness for the structure feasibility. There are holes that snap fits the rods in place and with zero visibility of weld marks.

48

ENGINEERING DETAILS Fixtures, the extended parts of both frames are to align the structure for welding the rods in a precise position. And its cut off and sides to be grinded and polished post welding the structure.

CMF VARIANTS

The powder-coat process entails the application of electrostatically charged particles onto the surface of the substrate. In a typical powder-coating system, a feeder unit delivers the powder to an electrostatic gun. The feeder unit also controls the flow of powder to the gun. RAL colors are used for information defining standard colors for varnish, powder coating and plastics. It is the most popular Central European color standard used today. The colors are used in architecture, construction, industry and road safety. Ideal materials like stainless steel (post galvanization) and mild steel can be powder coated with various RAL color standards.
