Meany Center for the Performing Arts — a new name that better reflects our mission to connect diverse audiences with visionary artists and ideas; nurture a culture of shared discovery through collaboration and exploration; and inspire our community on campus and off through transformative artistic experiences.

Building on our visiting artists program, we have expanded beyond the brick and mortar walls of Meany Hall to become something much more: a dynamic, creative center where artists, faculty, students and the community connect with each other and with the boundless power of the arts.

Although we’ve changed our name, what won’t change is the caliber of performers from across the globe that we will continue to bring you, such as the artists we’re presenting in the upcoming season. Creativity truly knows no limits, and we hope the artistry, imagination and sheer joy that begins on our stage will inspire you long after the curtain goes down.

The work will explore the themes of love, madness and mysticism through Mark Morris’ lyrical choreography, and feature popular Azerbaijani singers Alim Qasimov and Fargana Qasimova, the vibrant musicality of The Silk Road Ensemble and the striking visual palette of British painter Howard Hodgkin.

JESSICA LANG DANCE T H U -S AT, N O V E M B E R 10 -12 , 2 0 16, 8 P M Hailed as “a master of visual composition” by Dance Magazine, Jessica Lang, the recipient of a 2014 Bessie Award, seamlessly incorporates striking design elements and transforms classical ballet language into artfully crafted, emotionally engaging contemporary works.

T H U -S AT, F E B R U A R Y 16-18, 2 0 17, 8 P M The first professional company dedicated to stepping — a dance form that originated with African American sororities and fraternities — Step Afrika! makes its Seattle debut with The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence. This evening-length work integrates projections of the painter’s 60-panel masterpiece, The Migration Series, with rhythmic footsteps, body percussion and spoken word to create a multi-media performance chronicling the early 20th century exodus of African Americans from the rural south. Meany Center co-commissioned the remounting and expansion of this important work to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lawrence’s birth.

Transcending East and West, Shen Wei’s dances draw on influences as varied as traditional Chinese arts, American high modernism and Western contemporary dance. With a peerless eye for beauty, his works incorporate elegant design and imaginative use of space to create stunning kinetic stagescapes. The company will perform Neither, a new evening-​length choreographic work set to Morton Feldman’s opera of the same name, with libretto by Samuel Beckett.

His company makes its Seattle debut with What the Day Owes to the Night, a highly physical, stunningly fluid work for 12 French-Algerian and African male dancers that combines capoeira, martial arts, urban and contemporary dance with powerful imagery evocative of Orientalist paintings and the stone filigree of Islamic architecture.

In the coming season, over 5,000 K-12 students will come to Meany Hall to enjoy our free student matinee program. With priority given to students from under-resourced schools, our matinees raise the curtain for students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience some of the world’s most inspiring performing artists.

Our outreach programs extend beyond the stage into schools, community venues and unexpected places around campus and the city of Seattle, connecting our artists to our communities and our communities to each other. Every year, an average of 2,000 K-12 students — the majority at schools that have limited arts education — interact with artists from a variety of cultures, engaging with traditional and new performing art forms in hands-on workshops, interactive performances and master classes.

Music instruction has been offered at the University since the institution’s beginning in 1861, with degrees in music granted since 1911. Throughout that long history, the School of Music has played a vital role in the artistic and scholarly life of the University, and in shaping the innovative nature of the Seattle and greater Pacific Northwest music and arts communities.

The award-winning Dance Program and its faculty is comprised of artists/scholars possessing a vast array of professional expertise, research interests and teaching methodologies. Each year the breadth and diversity of the Dance Program is enriched by accepting a small cohort of professional dancers into the rigorous and innovative M.F.A. program, making for a fertile environment in which to learn, teach and create. Dance Program faculty provide an inclusive learning environment in which individual voices may be heard in a spirit of thriving cooperation. The Dance Program serves students from across campus and from a variety of disciplines and is the only dance program in Washington state to offer both Baccalaureate and Master of Fine Arts Degrees in Dance. At the core of that experience is the recognition of the arts as the confluence of theory, practice and creativity.

PERFORMANCES AT MEANY HALL CHAMBER DANCE COMPANY JUDSON DANCE THEATRE: THE FIRST DECADE OCTOBER 13-16, 2016 The year 1961 found a group of renegade choreographers together in a class that planted the seeds of post-modern dance and opened the art form up to an unlimited palette of expression. Rarely performed works include choreography of Steve Paxton, Lucinda Childs, Trisha Brown and Yvonne Rainer. The dancers, fascinated with philosophies and religions such as Existentialism and Zen Buddhism, also embraced freedom, diversity and democracy. Included on the program is choreography by Zvi Gotheiner, whose work 30 years later was foreshadowed by these genrechanging Judson artists.

The School of Drama develops innovative and courageous artists and scholars poised to be the creative leaders of tomorrow. The School is home to nationally recognized graduate professional training programs offering M.F.A. degrees in acting, directing and design. The Ph.D. program is at the forefront of critical theater studies in America, with a highly respected national profile. The B.A. program fosters collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship as well as the critical thinking and organizational skills students need to succeed professionally. The School has exceptionally close ties to the Seattle theater community. Faculty and alumni have founded or currently hold leadership positions in many of the region’s (past and present) theaters, including ACT—A Contemporary Theatre, The Empty Space Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Washington Ensemble Theatre and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. During the School’s main stage season, patrons meet emerging M.F.A. and undergraduate artists on campus in the Meany Studio Theatre, the historic Glenn Hughes Penthouse Theatre and the Floyd and Delores Jones Playhouse.

November 30–December 11, 2016 Suzan-Lori Parks’ haunting adaptation of The Scarlet Letter turns Nathaniel Hawthorne’s tale of an exiled adulteress into the tragic story of Hester Smith — branded A for Abortionist — plying her trade in hopes of buying her son’s freedom from prison. Employing Parks’ singular mingling of theatrical language, music and dance, Fucking A is a scream of rage at the plight of those on the margins of society.

The College of Arts & Sciences offers a program of study in Musical Theater culminating in a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Individualized Studies. Through a collaborative and unique cross-departmental partnership with the School of Drama, the School of Music and the Dance Program, this course of study offers a dynamic range of coursework and practical application including robust training in acting, singing and dancing; performance-based projects; faculty and student directed productions; and special workshops with leading musical theater professionals. The program is designed to graduate well-rounded individuals equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to transition into the musical theater profession, and to approach their careers from an entrepreneurial perspective.

The Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) is an interdisciplinary degree-granting center designed to support the emergence of a new generation of hybrid artists. DXARTS fosters the invention of new forms of digital and experimental arts by synthesizing expanded studio research with pioneering advances in digital computing, information technologies, performance, science and engineering. Embracing an expansive range of arts practice, theory and research across multiple disciplines, DXARTS creates opportunities for artists to discover and document new knowledge and expertise in an evolving field of media arts. The focus of DXARTS is its Ph.D. program — the first of its kind in the country — enabling students to become the next generation of pioneers in the arts.
