A Message from the Office for Advancement

Dear alumni:

After a delay in our anticipated production schedule, I am excited to be sending you the ninth edition of the SVM Alumni Class Notes. Thank you to all who took the time to send in your news – it is wonderful to hear about everything our UW School of Veterinary Medicine alumni have been doing. The content in this edition reflect updates submitted from November 2021 through January 2022.

I have enjoyed catching up with many of you at in person events in the last year – our alumni receptions and our “Alumni Palooza” event last fall. I look forward to the return of our regularly scheduled alumni events in the year ahead. Please join me for those!

If all continues to go well, in addition to our Alumni Reunion (June 25) and tailgate (TBD) events at the SVM, we’ll be at AVMA and AAEP this year and VMX and WVC in 2023.

Another way to stay connected is through LinkedIn. We recently established a school page (linkedin.com/school/uwvetmed) and are phasing out our group due to how LinkedIn’s features have evolved. With the page you can connect to the school in our profile and be listed as an alum. This will allow us to do a better job of communicating professionally-focused news with you and support networking among not only alumni but with our students, as well.

You can also stay connected to the school and your fellow graduates by visiting the alumni section of the SVM website (www.vetmed.wisc.edu/alumni) and reading the bi-monthly Alumni e-news to keep up with the latest news, alumni events, and ways to get involved. And we have email lists set up by graduation year to help you to stay in touch with your classmates. To use, email YEARdvm@g-groups.wisc.edu (e.g., 1999dvm@g-groups.wisc.edu).

If you have any questions about that or can’t use it, please let me know.

Finally, please be on the lookout for some exciting news from the school’s Alumni Advisory Board about changes to their structure and their latest ways for alumni to stay connected with the school. More to come soon!

Again, thank you for staying in touch. Please take care.

[1987] In Memoriam

Linda Sullivan DVM’87

Longtime UW School of Veterinary Medicine professor, mentor, and philanthropist, Linda Sullivan, whose impact extended far beyond the walls of the SVM, passed away on February 1, 2022, following a long battle with ovarian cancer.

Sandy Curran

After over 30 years of practicing dairy reproductive ultrasound, I closed my business. Ron and I left Wisconsin, relocating to Austin, Texas so we could be closer to our kids and three grandkids.

Deciding I wasn’t quite ready for retirement, I started working in a companion animal practice and found things have changed quite a bit since I last practiced small animal medicine! We enjoy the family time and the warmer weather. If you’re ever down this way, stop in! I’d love to share my new city with you.

Dr. Sullivan graduated with the SVM’s charter class of 1987. Three years later, she joined the school as a clinical instructor in the Department of Pathobiolog ical Sciences. Her storied career at the SVM was characterized by decades of leadership, service, and philanthropy. She was an exceptional teacher who shaped the careers of future veterinarians in the laboratory sections of a range of courses including bacteriology, parasitology, and clinical pathology. Through her service on several SVM committees and as an advisor for the Companion Animal Club, her voice was consistently a driving force for positive change across the school. The Wisconsin Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Leadership and the Walter F. Renk Distinguished Professor Award are two prominent honors Linda received for her outstanding contributions across teaching, academic service and community service.

Outside the classroom, Linda understood the ways the SVM could positively affect our community – an inspiring example for all of us. In 1992, she created the Dog Jog, an annual fundraiser that raised more than $500,000 in 30 years for local humane societies and the SVM’s spay/neuter program with animal shelters. Linda also helped launch the Pet Pals program at American Family Children’s Hospital, where volunteers and their dogs provided comfort to thousands of hospitalized children and their families. Pet Pals set the stage for the recently established Canine Health and Medical Pals (CHAMPs) program, which provides full-time, trained facility dogs to American Family Children’s Hospital patients as part of their treatment plan.

Rodney Kuenzi

This past July the Honorable Mayor and First Lady of Oconomowoc hosted visiting dignitaries at their farm.

Bob DVM’87 and Gina Magnus DVM’87, Jeffrey Zuba DVM’87, Peter Gaveras DVM’87, and their much younger chauffeur enjoyed a few libations in the mayor’s corn crib.

Linda’s further commitment to improving the lives of animals and people on their own cancer journeys is evidenced through her involvement with PuppyUp Madison and Czar’s Promise, a local non-profit dedicated to funding companion animal cancer research at the School of Veterinary Medicine, and pediatric cancer research at American Family Children’s Hospital and UW Carbone Cancer Center.

Linda’s exemplary life defines the Wisconsin Idea. Her impact on the SVM and campus communities, the veterinary medical profession and the countless animals and people whose lives she changed along the way is a testament to her life dedicated to teaching and service.

The Class of 1990 started a Zoom group as a substitute for our COVID-cancelled 30 year reunion that was sched uled for June, 2020. We decided to keep it going and it’s been a great way to keep in contact as we continue to deal with COVID challenges along with the usual challenges of life and practice. We have had several book discussions but most importantly, we share laughs and support each other as only old friends can do. If you have not received the Zoom invitations and occasional emails and would like to join us, please contact Kristi Thorson, and give her per mission to share your email address with me. We usually meet one Sunday evening per month at 7 PM CST and are always open to suggestions. Join us for an hour or just drop in to say Hi. It’s always great to see our friends!

John Hallett

I’m thrilled to be working on the new bronze sculpture “Forward Together” for the courtyard between the current and new SVM buildings. Check out Hallett Iron Works on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube for updates and a link to donate!

Heidi and I are still owners at Hallett Veterinary Hospital in Oconomowoc. Heidi is active painting and writing poetry. Our oldest son, Torrin, is a graduate student in horn performance at Yale (hoping to land a symphony job) and our youngest son, Tanner, is a mechanical engineer working on the Starship at SpaceX in California. Both boys are still log rolling with Coach Dad.

Kristine Hoyt

Greetings, classmates! I was thrilled to make it back to school last summer for the first time since graduation.

I am very excited about John Hallett’s sculpture for the expansion. I encourage you all to donate!

I am still practicing feline medicine and surgery at my practice in Maine. I am planning to retire soon so that I can follow my desire to teach and travel. I am honored to be the Alternate Delegate to AVMA for Maine.

My daughter is heading off to the London School of Economics for a master’s program, so I am filling the empty nest with an Afghani refuge. There are thousands of them now in our country who need some kindness. I encourage you to open your homes and hearts. Take care!

The Class of 1990 has been having zoom reunions for the past year. It has been a great way to catch up with everyone.

Ann Sherwood Zieser is a partner of the Turks and Caicos Veterinary Associates. I was lucky enough to join Ann and her family to Turks and Caicos in January. The TCVA works with clients as well as the rescues on the island.

[1991]

Jeff Lohmiller

Last year brought big changes for us. In mid-summer 2021, we decided it was time to downsize from the house we raised the kids in to something smaller. So we spent the next six weeks going through 20 years of stuff — not much fun. The house went on the market and was sold within 12 hours with three offers. We moved out five weeks later from our four-bedroom house into a 900 square foot apartment in Green Island, New York.

I learned 2 weeks later that my position was being elim inated as of October 1, ending my almost 22 years at Taconic. I was fortunate to have been able to travel the world and grow personally and professionally during my time there. I have been spending most of my time since then helping family members, which has been quite rewarding. We’ll be in the apartment until Sue finishes her internship (March) and her master’s (May). We’ll then find out where she’ll get a job. We’re looking at perhaps New Hampshire as a central point to where all our kids are. At that point, I’ll reevaluate what my next steps may be. Wishing a blessed 2022 for all!

Ron Biese

Our family has expanded over this past year. My son, Kevin, and his wife, Nikki, had their fifth child. Isabel was born on July 11, 2021. Kevin will be graduating from UW-Madison this May with a PhD in Kinesiology. My daughter, Kayla, had her second girl, Nora, on November 30, 2021. She is a PICU nurse at a Children’s Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. Our seven grandchildren really keep us hopping...it is so much fun!

Our practice, Kaukauna Veterinary Clinic, is as busy as ever, which I don’t have to tell all of you! You are living it too, I suspect. Hang in there and do the best you can to help people with their furry friends and stay positive.

Douglas Gensel

(Photo 4, Page 5)

Owning a veterinary practice in a quaint, rural area in North Carolina reminds me in many ways of the great Dr. James Herriot. My greatest partners have been my wife and daughter who are there when I need to destress. Besides loving the NC weather, this practice has grown physically and monetarily. My passion of helping animals is best suited with our spay neuter and rabies clinics, as well as having a position on the Health Department and Animal Control boards. Believe it or not, there is time for coaching travel volleyball, which is my second passion. My family and staff have embraced and loved numerous horses, felines and canines. My daughter decided not to become a veterinarian, but to become a surgeon in the Airforce. Being a Christian

family, we set our goals high so our voices can be heard not only in veterinary medicine, but in today’s world.

Jeff Hookstead

Greetings to all ‘92 classmates! A lot has happened in the last 30 years... My oldest daughter currently owns four Culver’s restaurants, the first at age 25. She also has two beautiful boys, which obviously makes me a grandpa. That’s a title I didn’t think about 30 years ago.

My son is out east working for an internet news company. He loves his work, and it has opened doors I could only dream about. It’s very possible some of you follow his work. Our youngest is a nurse and has weathered the COVID-19 pandemic as best as anyone could.

After 26 years in an ownership position, the last 15 as the

sole owner of a busy practice, I have sold my business and have decided to work part time. I’m not exactly sure what the future holds, but I can say that the last 30 years have been interesting. Ultimately, I wanted to have a James Herriot type of career, and that’s what I got.

I hope this finds all of you happy and healthy. Like Kenny Chesney said in the song “Knowing You,” 30 years ago, we were kids on a carnival ride. Good luck to all and God bless

Carol McLaughlin

(Photo 1, Page 7)

Hey everyone! Not sure there’s anything much new here...I’m still working from home for Nationwide (Pet Insurance), doing a little relief work, and having fun with the dogs competing in herding, agility, frisbee, dock diving, scent work and occasional rally/obedience. They keep me busy! I’m also still fostering for Leashes of Love rescue. I find it rewarding helping these lost souls find their happily ever after. I hope you are all well and I’ll see you at the reunion this year!!!

Emily Leuthner

In 2019, my husband Mike (DVM‘95) and I partnered our three AAHA hospitals with Encore Vet Group. Since that time, I stepped away from practice management and began working at the Encore home office, looking for other great practices to join our family! Encore is working to better the future of Veterinary Medicine by putting the health and well being of our doctors and teams at the forefront of everything we do. Our practices are doing great. Mike cut back to two days per week and is loving his semi-retirement. Logan (20) is a sophomore at my alma mater, Skidmore College in New York, and Silas (18) is finishing up his high school career and swimming for Edgewood. Having a home office, I love being surrounded by my four-legged coworkers and it’s given me the chance to get back into riding horses again. Despite undergoing cancer treatment right as COVID unfolded, I have to say that life is good!

I worked at the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics in summer 2021. I was part of the FEI (International Equestri an Federation) team of 20 veterinarians from 11 countries that ran the on-site veterinary clinic and monitored the health and welfare of the 300 equine athletes. I am an FEI veterinarian and have been working at international competitions since 1999, including the World Equestrian Games and the Olympics.

Laurie Brignolo

I am the executive director of the UC Davis Research and Teaching Animal Care Program and was recently appointed to the AAALAC, International Council on Accreditation. AAALAC is a private, nonprofit organiza tion that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. More than 1,000 companies, universities, hospi tals, government agencies and other research institutions in 49 countries have earned AAALAC accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to responsible animal care and use. AAALAC’s Council on Accreditation is comprised of animal care and use professionals and researchers from around the globe. I will be joining a team of 45 council members and will represent AAALAC as lead on accreditation site visits throughout North America.

Since March 13, 2020, Joe (attorney) and I (Labcorp anatomic veterinary pathologist) have been working at home. My parents elected to ‘cancel Christmas’ for the 2nd year in a row due to Omicron. I haven’t seen my side of the family (in the D.C. area) since December 2019, so I was tempted to wallow in Pandemic blues, but an unexpected storm in Iowa diverted Joe’s sister’s flight to Indy (where we live) so we enjoyed a visit by them for two nights. I’m getting to know the neighbors who walk. Joe and I also joined a new, gorgeous fitness club at the start of the New Year that is pricey enough to keep us going, so we’re swimming or jogging at 6:30 a.m. four days a week and lounging in the jacuzzi after the swim on Sundays. That should help me lose the five pounds I gained baking just for fun. :) Other than that, all’s well. Here’s hoping for flu-like endemicity and a return to a social life soon!

Phil Wentz

Hello from Kentucky. Last year, after 33 years of Army Reserve and Active Duty from Medical and Veterinary Services, I retired. A medical lab technician before veterinary school, to hospital patient administrator during veterinary school, to caring for military animals, performing food defense and training military veterinarians, medical profes sionals and Soldiers after. key to Afghanistan were unique experiences. I cannot thank my wonderful wife, Candy enough for her efforts caring for me and our family while I was away. She married into my Army career and served with me for 15 years. Currently, we enjoy a little more time together watching our son Liam grow up as I work in small animal practice. I appreciate serving my community, locally and globally as we all look forward to a return to normality post COVID.

Not to be outdone by her dam, Tonks is already proving herself a judges’ favorite by earning her UKC Championship (in a single weekend), two puppy Best in Show distinctions, multiple Total Dog awards, and several performance titles. I was also honored to see my mini Appa loosa, Swayze, win AMHR National Championships in Stock Horse Halter and Multicolor in Tulsa, OK this year. We are both new to the miniature horse scene and looking forward to many more adventures.

Kristen Weiss-Reiter

This January, I became the sole owner of Useless Bay Animal Clinic, a two-and-a-half doctor, small animal practice on Whidbey Island, Washington. In addition to running a busy practice, my year has been jam-packed with dog and horse show events. My Labrador, Brach, earned her eleventh overall Best in Show award and returned home from the UKC Premier National dog show with the coveted Best of Breed distinction and Total Dog recognition. My husband (Gary Wiegel DVM’97) and I mourned the loss of our son, Jonah, who passed away on January 12, 2022. He was born June 2, 2006 with Canavans disease, which limited him both physically and cognitively, but he was a very happy boy. Jonah had a great smile. He will be missed.

In November 2021, I started a new position as attending veterinarian at Joliet Junior College in the Veterinary Medical Technology program. I also work as an adjunct professor in the program.

I do not know if this has already been brought to the school’s attention already but we lost a 2001 classmate (Dr. Dane Jesperson) on 9/24/21 to battle with colon cancer.

The pandemic has brought much change to the Walter household, as it has for everyone. We have a new addi tion to our family, a beautiful Golden Retriever named Hudson. He is full of puppy energy and playful antics. He will be a year old in February, and he keeps us all on our toes!

I have also recently decided to pursue a different path in my veterinary career. I accepted a position as a parttime instructor at Madison College. I started teaching this semester, and I must say, it is quite the change from private practice! But I am finding the work challenging and rewarding. The students are so excited to learn, and it’s refreshing to see such enthusiasm.

All Points Equine LLC has continued to grow and change in the face of an ongoing pandemic. All Points Equine formed an on-call co-op with another practice and dropped all the doctors’ on-call to 25 percent (insert the happy dance!) Both practices are actively looking for associates to join our practices so if you know anyone wanting to come east and practice equine medicine, send them my way! Personally, the family has settled into the new farm and bought a new horse, much to my husband’s dismay!

My veterinary clinic in Zimmerman, Minnesota, ZimmVet, was honored to be named the 2021 AAHA-Accredited Practice of the Year by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). The award recognizes the out standing achievements of accredited practice teams and celebrates ongoing advancements in veterinary medicine. The ZimmVet team, which includes fellow SVM graduate Abby Soderberg DVM’18, has worked collaboratively to solve challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, in cluding product shortages, staffing shortages and personal safety concerns. ZimmVet is looking forward to a building expansion in 2022, as well as continuing to grow their team, develop an on-the-job technician training program and explore new technologies to remain an exemplary provider of veterinary care for their clients.

Rebecca Banks

I’ve been working successfully full time as a veterinarian since 2008 and just started to chip away at the principle of my student loans.

Last May, I was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army. I was thankful my parents were able to travel to perform the change of rank at my ceremony. Nothing like face masks in your promotion pictures to remind one of the times we are currently living in.

I spent my last year at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research helping evaluate the SARS-CoV-2 SpFN vaccine they have developed. Its efficacy as a pancoro navirus vaccine will hopefully be a welcome addition to the arsenal to fight this and future pandemics.

This summer I did a Permanent Change of Station to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, where I am the Chief of Comparative Pathology at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense.

In November 2021, my organization, Madison Cat Project, moved into our new building. The new location is four times the size of the previous one and has nearly three times the housing capacity. Our spay/neuter capacity also increased from 40 surgeries per week to over 100. Perhaps most importantly, for the first time in my career I no longer have to share an office with other people, an exam room, or a surgery table. Swanky!

I took a giant leap and purchased a veterinary clinic in Greendale, Wisconsin in March 2021, renamed Greendale Village Vet. It has been a really crazy year of learning how to be a business owner and veterinarian but it has been very exciting. I have a great team to help me along in my journey and wonderful support from my family.

In the end, it takes a village (pun intended) and I have been feeling that this year more than ever. My hope is that I am creating a private practice atmosphere that treats clients like family and rewards my employees with important work-life balance. I am excited to see where my journey will take me.

In 2021, I was named the Director of Animal Health at the Houston Zoo, Houston, Texas. I eagerly took on this leadership role and the opportunity to oversee the medical care and well-being of the animals living at the zoo, as well as in the organization’s conservation programs. I had previously been a staff veterinarian at the Houston Zoo since 2015 and am a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine.

Rachel Loesch

Although 2021 was a tough year, it was also really exciting for me. I helped to open a brand new hospital (from the ground up) and became the medical director for that hospital! It’s been an amazing experience and adventure and pretty cool to see my hospital thrive so far. On the homefront, my husband (Greg) and I still have our two wonderful pups, and we are still loving life in the beautiful PNW!

Elisa Lovejoy

(Photo 4, Page 11)

For a big portion of 2020 and 2021, my family hunkered down at home to help protect our high-risk daughter during the relentless and ongoing pandemic. My hus band, Jason, worked from home and I transitioned to telehealth and temporary stay-at-home-mom life. We made the incredibly difficult decision to transition my husband’s heart dog to a more suitable kid-free home after an incident with our daughter. In the spring, we welcomed the sweetest Labrador pup, Tank, into our home. In that time of change and reflection, life forced me to reassess my priorities and develop a more sustain able work-life balance. In fall 2021, I officially became an independent contractor, and now work to provide relief ER & GP veterinary services to Southern Wisconsin. It is proving to be a very satisfying way to enjoy the career we all worked so hard for, while simultaneously enjoying and prioritizing family life!

A few big things have happened since graduation. After finishing my internship, I moved back to Madison for a year while my partner, Andrew Eitzer completed his radiology residency at the SVM in 2021. We then got engaged and moved down to Atlanta, Georgia shortly after to start the next chapter in our lives with our two cats, Mosa and Zin. We do miss Wisconsin but are loving it down here (especially the warmer weather) and looking forward to our wedding this fall.
