Welcome
Congratulations to the University of Washington Tacoma Class of 2014! When you march across the stage today, you step into the vanguard of more than 15,000 UW Tacoma graduates, a diverse group united by a common experience with a special responsibility as University of Washington alumni. UW Tacoma is proud to be part of the trio of outstanding University of Washington campuses. Our distinct mission as an urban serving university drives our engagement with the community in which we are embedded, and to whom we owe our very existence. I know that each of you, having in some way been transformed by your experience at UW Tacoma, will in turn serve as engines of change for your families and communities wherever you go. Knowing that will happen, and seeing it happen, is what is so gratifying to the faculty and staff that have walked with you, challenged you and helped you accomplish more than you ever imagined would be possible. You come here today as students; you leave as alumni. We who applaud you have been changed by your journey, and we thank you for that.
Kenyon S. Chan Interim Chancellor

ABOUT THE MACE University of Washington ceremonial occasions begin with the entrance of the University Mace, carried by the faculty marshal, Professor Jill Purdy of the Milgard School of Business. A mace was originally a weapon used by mounted knights for protection. It since has become a symbol of authority indicating that the proceedings to follow have official sanction. The current mace was presented to the University by the Alumni Association in 1961.
ACADEMIC REGALIA The academic dress worn by scholars originated in the Middle Ages. When European universities were taking form in the 12th and 13th centuries, the scholars usually were clerics as well, and they adopted dress similar to that of their monastic orders. Buildings were cold and drafty, so caps and warm, floor-length capes with hoods were necessities. As control of education passed from the churches, the dress was modified in various ways, and there was great diversity in the color and style of cap, gown and hood worn at different institutions. In 1895 a standardized code of academic dress was established that is followed by most colleges and universities in the United States. At the University of Washington, the bachelor’s and master’s gowns are black. The matching cap or mortarboard has a long tassel fastened to the middle of the top. The tassel is worn pendant over the left side of the cap. The colors of tassels or hoods are distinctive of the candidate’s academic program (in most cases). COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
Chancellor’s Medal
Bob Ferguson is the state of Washington’s 18th Attorney General. As the state’s chief legal officer, he provides legal advice to state agencies and the legislature, and he serves as the “people’s lawyer” for the citizens of the state. Prior to his election to statewide office, he served on the King County Council and worked as a litigator in the law firm now known as K&L Gates.
The Chancellor’s Medal recognizes academic excellence by an undergraduate student. All finalists have earned a 4.0 GPA.
He is a fourth-generation Washingtonian, a graduate of the University of Washington and New York University Law School and a serious Husky fan, having served as ASUW President in 1988-89. He and his wife Colleen are the proud parents of 6-year-old twins, Jack and Katie.
Student speaker Ka Yung Ursula Cheung graduates today from UW Tacoma’s Urban Studies Program. She comes from Hong Kong, and she herself says that she was a “bad girl” in high school, skipping classes and all but kicked out. Despite all that, she set her sights on college, and from the beginning aimed at a degree from UW Tacoma that would get her a career in urban planning. Faculty member Linda Ishem secured for Ursula an internship at Tacoma Housing Authority, opening her eyes to the rewards of community development. Today, Ursula has a message for international students: “Just be yourself. Trust yourself.” She is especially grateful to her professors, advisors and student friends. “They did so much for me, never knowing they turned a ‘bad’ Ursula into a critical thinker and a catalyst.”

“I’ve been called stupid, but I didn’t let that stop me,” says Sharon Ellen Hunter, this year’s Chancellor’s Medal recipient. Hunter grew up on five rural acres in south Kitsap County. From an early age she imagined being a scientist doing research, and she held that image in her mind through the years that intervened. As an adult, when she began to work on her college degree, Sharon’s immediate thought was that she would never be able to deal with the hardcore math and science requirements. But with the support of her mother and her academic mentors, Sharon gave it a try—and she aced it. She graduates today with a B.S. in environmental science. Now, after three years at UW Tacoma, Sharon raves about the importance of small classes, hands-on involvement with research, outstanding professors—“there are just tons of opportunities!” She has an undying love for the campus, and a newly-indestructible sense that she can make it as a woman in science.
chancellor’s medal finalists Chris Scott Lower, Environmental Studies and Sustainable Urban Development A first-generation student, Chris cites the importance of interactions and experiences beyond the classroom as a critical part of his college education. Erin Kirtley Sataloff, Psychology A military veteran with plans to get a Ph.D. in criminology, Erin stresses the value of role models and making a plan with the “big picture” in mind.
community engagement AWARD
DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD
Boards of directors are the heart and soul of Pierce County’s nonprofit agencies – but many struggle to find young, diverse, informed volunteers to keep their missions alive. Now a pair of UW Tacoma colleagues is trying to change that.
Donald Chinn, associate professor at the Institute of Technology since 2002, is the 2014 recipient of the UW Tacoma Distinguished Teaching Award. He is known as a fair teacher who uses humor and real-life examples to help students understand difficult concepts in computer science. An organized, prepared and tough teacher, Chinn draws on his own experience as a software developer at Microsoft to relate computer science to real-world applications and works closely with students to help launch their careers in the field. Students and colleagues alike say Chinn is humble, funny and easy to work with. He recently took on new teaching challenges by adding computer ethics and philosophy of science to his slate of courses.
Joe Lawless, executive director of the Milgard School of Business’ Center for Leadership and Social Responsibility, and Jill Purdy, associate professor at the Milgard School, teach a series of two classes that introduces UW Tacoma students to local nonprofit boards and teaches them the ins and outs of being responsible board members. Since the classes were launched in 2009, more than 100 UW Tacoma students have interned with 70 local nonprofit boards, and moved on with the knowledge and drive to help lead charitable agencies in their communities. UW Tacoma is the only university in the country to offer courses combining board internship experience with classroom studies. Lawless is a 2007 alumnus of the Milgard School’s MBA program. He has been executive director of the Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation and director of corporate partnerships for Tacoma Goodwill Industries. Purdy’s scholarly interests include organization theory, negotiation and conflict resolution, and higher education. She earned her doctorate from The Pennsylvania State University and served on the faculty of Bucknell University prior to coming to UW Tacoma in 1994. For their extraordinary efforts to connect young people with nonprofits, Purdy and Lawless were awarded the 2014 Community Engagement Award.
DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH AWARD Yonn Dierwechter, associate professor in Urban Studies, is the 2014 recipient of the UW Tacoma Distinguished Research Award. A member of the Urban Studies faculty since 2001, Dierwechter’s research examines geopolitics, urban development and sustainable growth. He has done groundbreaking research into how urban metropolitan areas like Puget Sound develop more efficiently when they work together as an entire region instead of as individual cities and counties. Colleagues say Dierwechter’s work has helped launch an exciting new subfield of urban studies, and his 2008 book, Urban Growth Management and its Discontents: Promises, Practices and Geopolitics in U.S. City-Regions, helped set the agenda for further study in the field.
