Junior School Guide 5
College facilities UWCSEA East - Ang Mo Kio
UWCSEA East - Tampines
The campus at Ang Mo Kio is an ideal size and layout for a Primary School - self-contained and spacious, with the three-level classroom building set around a single courtyard. Year-group classrooms are clustered to facilitate interaction between classes, with ageappropriate facilities incorporated into the classrooms and other campus amenities.
A purpose-built facility, integrating fullyplanned educational functionality into every aspect, the new Tampines Campus provides what we believe is a benchmark in design and innovation in international schools around the world. Best-practise design has been integrated across every aspect of the new campus, incorporating environmental standards into every element of the school. We have challenged traditional notions of school design and created a distinctive concept entirely suited to the unique UWCSEA ethos and educational style.
Specialist teaching facilities include a 9,000-volume library with a full-time teacher librarian, leading edge IT infrastructure including a computer lab, projectors and interactive whiteboards, and specialist music, art and science rooms. There is also a fully-resourced Learning Support Centre. Shared communal facilities include: • courtyard - a key social space with all classrooms located around its perimeter • common play areas - football field, basketball court, outdoor playground and access to other nearby high- quality recreational facilities including a swimming pool • multi-purpose main hall which can accommodate the whole school for assemblies and performances • specialist teaching spaces - IT lab, music room, PE facilities, art room, library • canteen - with on-site catering, it can accommodate the entire school in one sitting
Set on 5.5 hectares (13.5 acres), the Tampines site is an L-shaped parcel of land, with excellent road access. The campus has been planned with core teaching areas situated in the middle, whilst green zones, sports fields and assembly halls are located around the perimeter. The vision in the design is the provision of shared learning and social spaces, enabling all students to interact, creating a ‘UWCSEA village.’ The campus design is layered in order to maximise the use of available space, with car and bus transit areas, parking, and indoor sport spaces located below ground. The boarding house will be located in a 16-storey building in a peaceful corner of the grounds. Specialist facilities planned include: • theatres (tiered, black box) • multi-purpose halls • sports facilities - Olympic-sized and learn-to-swim pools, full-size football pitch, three sports halls, tennis courts, gymnasium • science, IT and computer, and language labs • fully equipped design technology workshops • specialist music studios and teaching facilities • art rooms, dark room, ceramics studio • home economics facilities • two libraries equipped as state-ofthe-art resource centres
Junior School The Junior School at Tampines will be housed in one of the two educational block buildings in the central part of the campus. The building itself will be six storeys high, with lateral connections to the sports fields. The Primary Library will be on the first floor, ‘plaza level’. Below the main buildings will be a selfcontained parking and drop off points for parents and direct bus access. The Junior School will be housed on the lower levels, using specifically-designed classrooms with age-appropriate facilities. Each grade will have dedicated classrooms, leading to a central ‘pod’ area containing grade-specific resources. The class rooms will provide a flexible environment to support the curriculum and yet allow easy access to appropriate shared teaching facilities such as learning support and play areas. Junior students will have specialist lessons in Music, Art, Physical Education, Information Technology and Additional Languages, with teaching facilities for these subjects contained within the block.
