Baher came to UWC Atlantic on a full scholarship that changed his life. The war in Syria changed everything for Baher. At the age of twelve, just as he was about to be sent to an orphanage, a cousin helped him cross the border to Lebanon where he began life as a refugee.
Baher’s talent and determination were spotted in Lebanon by former Danish prime minister, Helle Thorning Schmidt who suggested he apply for a UWC scholarship. Baher applied to the UWC via the Syrian national committee and was offered a place at UWC Atlantic, receiving a full scholarship from the Horizon Foundation.
“When I first arrived, I was awestruck to see the dining hall, the gardens… all the places I had been looking at in photos every day. I have done so much already and yet there is still so much for me to experience here. It has been completely life-changing.”
After leaving UWC Atlantic, Baher studied a Politics and International Relations degree at Bristol University, and has just been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford.
He envisions a future filled with peace and compassion, aspiring to become a global advocate for children living in war zones.
ONE DAY, I HOPE TO GIVE A VOICE TO THOSE WHO OFTEN GO UNHEARD ” “
An example of our community coming together to give back is the UWC Atlantic Seafront project launched by the Seafront Task Force, led by alumnus Pelham Allen (UWCA ‘69).
Having already received a generous donation from Willem de Vogel (UWCA ‘69) to enable the start of the work, the project will encompass a range of initiatives with the focus on bringing more activity back to the seafront. Willem de Vogel shares his journey supporting UWC Atlantic’s seafront project and his legacy gift.

There would never have been a UWC Atlantic without the generosity of private donors. UWC Atlantic gave me an unbelievable start in life. Leaving one’s home country at 16 is a big step. Living in a challenging environment, both intellectually and physically, prepared me to take on many other big steps. So I was able to embrace opportunities when they came my way, although it never was without risk.
Today I can afford to make a legacy gift without hurting my children. I doubt I could have given them any inheritance without my UWC Atlantic years. And I can make annual gifts. So I follow in a very modest way the examples of AC’s financial founders. I hope many of you had similar experiences to mine. If so, please consider making a legacy gift.
