Financial Aid and Cashier’s Office
The Financial Aid Office assists students in financing their educational expenses through state, federal, and institutional programs. When administering these programs, our dedicated staff works with all prospective and current students, families, and members of the campus community.
Tuition and fees can be paid with cash or check at the Cashier’s Office. Credit or debit payments can be made online through PASS. The Cashier’s Office also processes refunds, scholarships, and online payments. Students may grant a third party (for example, a parent) access to certain features within PASS.
WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID?
Financial aid consists of grants, loans, employment, and scholarships. These resources may assist you with meeting your educational expenses at UW-Whitewater. Visit our website under “Types of Aid” for additional information and eligibility requirements.
HOW DO I RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID?
You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to be considered for grants, federal loans, and employment (work-study). The application is available online at https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.UW-Platteville’s FAFSA school code is 003921.
Use this code for both the Richland Center Campuses and The Baraboo campuses as well. You will report your prior-prior year federal income tax information - on the 2022-23 FAFSA, Include 2020 income. You must be admitted to the university before your aid application can be processed.
The aid you receive will depend on your eligibility as determined through the FAFSA, state and federal regulations, and the availability of funds for specie programs with limited funding. The FAFSA is available on October 1st of each year to fill out for the upcoming school year.
WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY AID?
Grants, loans, and scholarships in PASS (where UW-Platteville has awarded them or has received the funding for the scholarship if from an outside source) are applied directly to a student’s UW-Whitewater account at the beginning of each term. Once students complete all requirements, the aid will be released. Note that there are additional application steps for loans, you will receive information on these if a loan award is accepted. If your aid for the semester exceeds your charges, you will receive a refund check, or the refund may be directly credited to your bank account. We recommend you arrange for the direct deposit of refunds with the Cashier’s Office.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Complete a new FAFSA every academic year to receive aid for that year. It does not roll over. • Dropping a class or withdrawing from all classes may affect your aid, which means you may owe funds back to UW-Platteville. • In order to continue receiving aid, you must maintain satisfactory academic progress. • At the start of each semester, enrollment is reviewed to determine the student’s enrollment status compared to the level at which financial aid was awarded. If different, aid may have to be adjustedat that time. • Visit our website under “Policies” for more details on the above and other important items. Fall tuition bills will be generated in late July or early August by the UW-Platteville Cashier’s Office and an email notification is sent to the student with their bill for the Fall 2023 semester. Please understand that when the initial bill is sent out, there has not been any aid deducted from the bill, the disbursement happens on the first day of classes for the semester.

Student employment
UW-Platteville offers many different types of employment opportunities across all departments, including Dining Services, Pioneer Farm and Greenhouse positions, academic assistants who support our instructors, and office assistants who support university functions.
REASONS TO WORK ON CAMPUS
Working on campus allows students to gain work experience with the benefit of flexible hours and scheduling to match class requirements. Working on campus gives students a convenient way to earn money without having to leave campus.
HOW TO GET A JOB
On-campus jobs are posted to an online job board called Handshake. Browse Handshake for the latest job openings.
NEW HIRE PROCESS
If a student is hired for an on-campus position, the student must provide documentation and complete the required forms to verify eligibility to work. The Student Employment Office will directly communicate with the student regarding what paperwork needs to be completed.
WORK STUDY
Some students may be awarded Work Study as part of their financial aid package. Work Study gives students a bank of funds that can only be paid to them through on-campus employment. The Financial Aid Office will send communication directly to students who have been awarded Work Study. Work Study awards are not applied directly to tuition.
NOTE: Work Study is NOT a requirement to work on campus. Students who do not qualify for Work Study are encouraged to apply for on-campus employment as well.

TRIO Student Support Services is a program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. We provide a variety of free support services to help our participants become successful college graduates. TRIO-SSS offers:

The Wright Center’s goal is to provide access to resources and programming that assist non-traditional and veteran students in making a successful transition to UW-Platteville and support their needs while pursuing their education. The Wright Center provides guidance and resources for using military or veteran education benefits, information to help students prepare for mobilization, as well as returning to the university after mobilization.

Services for Students with Disabilities
Services for Students with Disabilities’ mission is to assist students with disabilities in obtaining reasonable academic and nonacademic accommodations as well as auxiliary aids. We work with students, faculty, and staff to ensure assessment of students’ abilities, not their disabilities.
We review documentation and meet with students to determine appropriate accommodations. We also work closely with various departments and offices across campus to ensure accessibility. The purpose of academic accommodations is not to ensure success, but provide access and equal opportunity.
Some of the accommodations provided at UW-Platteville are:

Pioneer Access Orientation is a multi-day pre-orientation program for new students with disabilities that are registered with SSWD. University Counseling Services
University Counseling Services is the primary source of mental health counseling for students on the UW-Platteville campus. Confidential, short-term counseling is provided to assist students with personal, social, developmental, academic, or career concerns related to their education progress, personal growth, and general well-being. We offer a variety of groups and workshops throughout the semester. Counseling services are funded through segregated fees, so you have already paid for the services. WELLNESS WALK
Wellness stations have been placed along several interlocking trails on campus. It is a self-paced activity that emphasizes emotional wellness as an element of overall health. When physical activities are offered in outdoor environments they can facilitate physical and emotional relaxation as well as provide benefit to one’s mood and thoughts. Through the placement of eight stations, the Wellness Walk provides the campus community an activity to strengthen the health of individuals by improving emotional wellness and providing a permanent, structured way to engage in these practices on a regular basis.

Campus Recreation on the UW-Platteville campus—which includes the Pioneer Activity Center, Outdoor Recreation, and Intramurals—helps students, faculty, staff, and community members be more active and achieve a healthier lifestyle.
PIONEER ACTIVITY CENTER
The Pioneer Activity Center is the athletics, recreation, and health and human performance hub of campus. Students, faculty, staff, and community members can come to enhance their level of health and fitness to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
The facility has a multitude of activity spaces throughout the on-campus complex for open recreation, varsity sports, intramurals, and classes. The swimming pool, walking track, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and racquetball courts create opportunities for social engagement and physical well-being. An 18,000 square foot strength facility, cardio loft, and exercise studio space allows patrons to participate in our wellness initiatives and achieve their fitness goals.
Enrolled students who have paid segregated fees may use the PAC at no additional charge.

Parking
Parking on the UW-Platteville campus is regulated through the entire calendar year. A parking permit is required in all university parking lots. Signs are located by each parking lot entrance designating the type of permit required. UW-Platteville parking permits will be available mid-July. Permits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not wait until school starts to purchase your permit.
Your license plate is your parking permit on campus. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the correct license plate is registered with the permit. Student parking permits allow students to register up to two license plates on their permit; however, only one vehicle can be parked on campus at a time.

Transportation
Public transportation, walking, and bicycling are great ways to get around Platteville and UW-Platteville. You can do your part to help the environment, while using convenient and reliable ways to get around.
UW-Platteville partners with the city of Platteville to provide affordable, sustainable transportation options in our community that allow our students to come to campus without needing a personal vehicle. The Platteville Public Bus operates six days per week on a fixed schedule, and all UW-Platteville students ride free with their Campus Card. Shared-ride taxi service is available seven days per week. Students with disabilities may contact Services for Students with Disabilities to obtain a voucher for the taxi.

Campus Card
The Campus Card is your official UW-Platteville identification. Your Campus Card grants you access to many things on campus. You’ll always want to keep it handy and take good care of it. If you lose it, there is a replacement fee for a new one.
Taking your picture and receiving your Campus Card will be part of your On-Campus Orientation experience. If you are not attending an On-Campus Orientation experience, you will be able to take your photo and receive your Campus Card when you arrive to campus for Welcome Weekend.

Textbook Center
The textbook rental program is a unique and important way that we make a degree affordable to you. The Textbook Center provides books and other formats of course materials that you are required to have for your classes. Students pay a semester rental fee for the use of textbooks. The semester fee is the same whether you require four or 24 books. If you are a part-time student, or attending a shorter session, the fee is prorated per course credit.
BOOK PICKUP
• Electronically sign the Textbook Rental Agreement in your PASS account, which is available beginning early August. • Print or screenshot your textbook list. • Bring your textbook list and Campus Card to the Textbook Center during pickup hours.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
• Returning books works just the opposite. To avoid late fees or being charged for a book, materials must be returned by the last day of the semester. To avoid additional charges your textbooks must be returned in good condition. • The Textbook Center will use your campus email to communicate with you. Please make sure to check for email notices weekly before and after the semester begins or ends. This is when notices go out about unreturned books or changes in our procedures.

When you activated your UW-Platteville account, you agreed to the Acceptable Use Policy. The Acceptable Use Policy includes topics such as copyright laws, spamming/hacking, and other criminal offenses. Review the policy here.
SOFTWARE AND COMPUTER RECOMMENDATIONS
UW-Platteville students are eligible for free software downloads for Microsoft Office applications.
ITS does not provide a computer buying or leasing program at this time. Students interested in purchasing a computer will need to purchase them directly from a vendor; however, many manufacturers offer discounts to students. Students also have access to multiple computer labs with printers on campus.
Choosing a computer involves many factors, including personal preference, budget, and needs. ITS cannot recommend one particular product over another. We do, however, provide useful links to help you in your decision-making for computers and other hardware. The ITS FAQ provides general guidelines for purchasing computers and other equipment, as well as information on cell phone service.

University Police
The mission of UW-Platteville University Police is to maintain a safe and secure environment for learning, working, and personal growth, while providing assistance to a culturally enriched and diverse population. The safety and well-being of students, employees, and the public is at the top of our priorities.
Our police officers are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These officers are sworn in State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officers with the same training and certifications as your local police or sheriff’s department.
UW-Platteville prioritizes sending notifications quickly to students and staff when there is an emergency or crime alert. Currently, the university utilizes the following methods to reach students and staff:

There are also many tools provided to maintain a safe environment.
PIONEER ALERTS
Pioneer Alerts is our text and email notification system. All students are automatically enrolled in this program unless they opt out. Parents and guardians can also receive these notifications via text and email. The student will have to enroll the parent or guardian under their Pioneer Alert account.
EMERGENCY CALL BOXES
Emergency call boxes are radios that operate on the University Police radio frequency. When the “Push for Help” button is pressed, all on-duty police officers monitoring the University Police frequency, including the Platteville Police and Grant County Sheriff’s Department, receive the announcement providing the location of the activated call box alarm. Police response to the alarm does not rely on the caller’s ability to provide information on their location or ability to speak.
NIGHTLOCK LOCKDOWN
University Police and Facilities have collaborated to install barricade devices in classrooms and labs throughout campus. There is a wall-mounted clear box with a piece that can be removed and inserted into the floor, allowing anyone inside a classroom to quickly and easily barricade the door from within.

ITS safety and security
Your campus username and password is the key to all your personal information including your grades, financial information, Canvas, email, and more. Treat your password like your toothbrush – never share your campus password with anyone, even your parents. You can grant your parents or family members guest access to your PASS account so they can support you and access relevant information without knowing your password.
ITS will never ask for your username and password – not in an email, form, or link. If you are having trouble logging into a system, ITS will ask you to log in first. Stay sharp and be thoughtful about emails that might be suspicious. If you’re not sure, forward any suspicious messages to helpdesk@uwplatt.edu.
The password you set up for your UW-Platteville account is good for 180 days before you will be asked to update it. You will receive three plain text email reminders prior to the password expiring.
To keep your physical devices safe on campus, ITS recommends using locks for your laptop and never leave your belongings unattended. In case your devices are stolen, make sure you have information like the make, model, serial number, and MAC address recorded somewhere safe. We recommend installing antivirus software on your devices.

Academic Support Programs
The mission of Academic Support Programs is to equip students for academic success by providing innovative learning strategies and connections to campus resources. ASP offers a comprehensive range of services for UW-Platteville students supported through your tuition.
These no-cost services include:
• Academic advising and academic coaching – students work with professional staff to discuss degree planning, course selection, and overall strategies to be successful in college. • First Year Experience – the transition to college can be overwhelming for any student. Our First Year Experience program offers opportunities for students to develop new skills and strategies to be successful, both personally and academically. • Tutoring and writing assistance – our trained peer tutors can help students in many courses to increase content understanding and academic confidence. Successful students are hired as peer tutors every semester in a wide variety of subject areas. • Testing Center – the Testing Center supports UW-Platteville students and instructors by offering testing accommodations and other related services. • Peer Mentor Program – our friendly Peer Mentors support first year and transfer students in their transition to college life and the campus community.
Our services can help all students. Whether you are a student who was successful in high school but are struggling with the transition to college level courses, or a student who is doing well and wants to increase confidence, we are here to support your academic success. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important skills you’ll need to develop in order to be successful in college.
Navigate Student
Navigate Student is a success tool available on desktop or mobile app. Using Navigate Student, you can make appointments with tutoring services, the writing center, and many academic advisors and coaches. You can access information about campus resources, opt into the Study Buddies list, and view your course schedule. We will send you timely and relevant information based on your interests.

Karrmann Library
The Karrmann Library is a hub for information on the UW-Platteville campus. Books, government publications, periodicals, newspapers, and other serial titles can be found in the library’s collections. In addition, the library offers electronic books, ejournals, and extensive databases. Patrons who cannot find what they need within the UW System may use Interlibrary loan, which provides access to materials around the world.
The librarians at Karrmann Library are skilled in helping sort through countless electronic and printed resources to find just what you need, within library walls and around the world. Librarians can help you choose topics for research, narrow your focus according to your needs, and find and critically evaluate electronic and printed materials.

Math Learning Center
The Mathematics Learning Center is a walk-in tutoring service where all tutors are capable math students in their third or fourth year of study. They can assist you with questions on homework and provide clarification on concepts. We provide a comfortable, quiet space for individual and group study where technology and resource textbooks are available to support work. Mathematics faculty offices are located near the MLC for easy access for asking questions of your professors.

EMS Student Success Programs
The College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science provides academic resources to students within the College of EMS. Student Success Programs has a center in Sesquicentennial Hall that is a welcoming, inclusive space designed to foster a positive, collaborative learning environment. The College of EMS Center for Projects, Opportunities, Instruction, Networking and Teamwork, or CenterPOINT, is a space designed to support your academic success. It’s a great place to meet your classmates for group project meetings, study between classes, meet with a tutor or professor, use a computer, or find out about college-specific events and programs, and more. Stop in and take advantage of the great resources CenterPOINT has to offer. There are also campus job opportunities where you can be a tour guide for the College or work in CenterPOINT and help support the programming for the College of EMS students and pre-college students.

Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program
The Women in STEM Program is vibrant and engaging STEM community for women in all STEM majors on campus. The WiSTEM Program is here to provide a supportive community with mentoring, friendships, and role-modeling from STEM faculty and industry members. You can get involved in our many events through the WiSTEM Living Learning Community, Peer Mentor Program, Professional Mentor Program or attend the annual Women in STEM Banquet. The program also offers volunteer opportunities through pre-college programs to get more young girls interested in STEM. Looking for a campus job? Consider working for our programs as student assistant, mentor or tour guide.
You can also hang out in the Women in STEM Mentor Center in Sesquicentennial Hall to meet other women in STEM majors. The center is a great place to study and is equipped with dual monitor computers, printers, a collaboration station and more. Getting involved through student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, and student governance is a great way to meet people who share similar interests as you. 80% of students are involved with at least one organization on campus. Involvement leads to impressive leadership experiences, connects you with the community, adds to your resume, and enriches your life. In addition to making friends, getting involved on campus can build lifelong skills. Join two clubs to see if they are for you. We recommend one career- or major-focused organization and one just for fun.
Information about the 200+ student organizations and campus events can be found on PioneerLink, an online engagement tool. If you can’t find something that interests you, contact the Pioneer Involvement Center to start your own organization. After classes get started, members of student organizations will be excited to connect with potential new members at the Involvement Fair on The Markee West Lawn.
Fraternity and sorority life
Joining a fraternity or sorority is a great way to enhance the collegiate experience by providing opportunities to develop important academic and leadership skills, as well as a strong sense of belonging. Members cultivate lifelong friendships and are involved with both the campus and community. These students serve the community by volunteering their time and energy. All fraternity and sorority organizations were founded on the principles of brotherhood and sisterhood and nurturing positive personal development.
