REPORT

WE ARE PLEASED TO SHARE THE RESULTS OF THE 56TH ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN during an interesting time. After quickly shifting to an entirely online spring and summer experience, the University reopened its doors in the fall of 2020. Student and faculty experiences took place in creative new ways, with roughly half of the Law School’s classes conducted in person or through a hybrid model combining in person and virtual teaching. The 2020–2021 Annual Giving Campaign finished with 8,369 alumni donors, a 47.11% participation rate, and the third-highest gift total in the school’s history, with $21.87 million. These results are a testament to the dedication of alumni, friends, volunteers, and staff. Alumni engagement was also transformed. To stay in touch with our alumni, the school turned to Zoom. Dean Risa Goluboff attended virtual receptions in Atlanta, the Bay Area, Birmingham, Los Angeles, New York City, Northern New Jersey, and Northern Virginia. In December, the Law School hosted an alumnae panel in honor of the centennial of coeducation. And in March, the Dean and Blair Wimbush ’80, Chair of the Board of Trustees, hosted a Washington, D.C., Black Law Alumni reception. While we had planned to host reunions in Charlottesville, it was not to be. For the first time in the school’s history, Law Alumni Weekend took place onlineβ€”giving alumni everywhere the opportunity to participate. The weekend included a Black Law Alumni Reception, CLE offerings, and the Dean’s State of the Law School address. A diverse group of faculty engaged virtually through an interactive panel titled β€œIn the Classroom-UVA Law, Then and Now.” The Class of 2020, from locations near and far, celebrated with an online reception hosted by Rachel Staub ’20 and Tim Sensenig ’20, and featuring a toast from Elizabeth Finn Johnson ’87, vice president of the Alumni Council. With renewed optimism, we are planning for reunions to take place in person May 13-15, 2022. All alumni, as always, are welcome to attend the weekend events. This year’s Annual Report highlights alumni support for today’s UVA Law students: β€’ A public service scholarship in memory and honor of former Professor Bill Stuntz ’84 funded by Ted ’92 and Keryn Mathas.
