Our Summer School is aimed at advanced master students and starting PhD students with the goal to teach them on recent advances in neural circuit development and plasticity from an interdisciplinary perspective. This will be achieved in three ways: first, lectures on basic neurobiological principles by the organisers, second, a series of lectures by renowned international speakers and third, participants work on assignments that require extensive discussion between lecturers, organizers and participants.

Diagnostic Avian and Exotic Animals Pathology Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UU)
In this course the student is trained to perform post-mortem diagnostics based on protocols, and to formulate, based on this diagnosis, the pathogenesis, the etiology and significance of the pathological conclusion for contact animals. The necropsied animals are made available by zoos and private owners. After the necropsy and discussion with the pathologist the student will contact the referring veterinarian. The veterinarian will be informed about the results and conclusion of the necropsy. The student writes a report and sends it to the pathology resident. The student will present selected cases and attend the resident histology seminars.

This course has a threefold aim. The first aim is to make you as a (future)professional in the field of animal care and management aware of the ethical dimensions of your dealing with animal (welfare) issues. The further aims are to offer knowledge and tools that enable you to deal with ethical questions on both a theoretical and a practical level.

Older adults are facing several major challenges regarding how to age-in-place, deal with dementia or other chronic disorders or how to retrofit their homes our adjust their environment aligned with the functional and/or cognitive decline. These aspects will be addressed in the Gerontechnology course. Furthermore, the latest developments trends and innovations in the field of gerontechnology will be addressed in this course.

Healthy Aging

This course will inform you, from different perspectives, about the factors that keep older people healthy and enable them to continue to participate in society. We will focus on a better understanding of the aging process, the prevention of functional decline and preservation of autonomy. Different excursions will let you experience getting older. Prior to the course, you will be given an assignment to conduct a life review with an elderly person (65+) which will be presented during the course.
