FRÉDÉRIC BIERRY

President of the European Collectivity of Alsace

Last year, Alsace cemented its place in the UTMB legend, joining the global circuit beloved by all trail enthusiasts. This year, we are thrilled to once again host thousands of runners for an extraordinary race, weaving through castles, vineyards, and both architectural and natural wonders. It’s an event that transcends time, embodying a blend of tradition and excitement, and this year, it’s infused with the spirited atmosphere of a grand popular celebration. Adding to the excitement, just a few weeks later on June 26, we will proudly welcome the Olympic Flame to Alsace, on the initiative of the European Collectivity of Alsace, just one month before the grand opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Following the success of the inaugural edition, which saw over 4,600 participants in 2023, we are thrilled to present the second edition of Trail Alsace Grand Est.

As part of the UTMB World Series, including 42 international events in 2024, we are dedicated to delivering exceptional international experiences while promoting sustainable sports practices in harmony with the values of the territories involved and their local stakeholders.

After months of meticulous preparation, we are looking forward to welcoming 6,000 participants to this year’s event, offering them an unforgettable experience throughout the entire weekend. Isabelle Viseux-Poletti, UTMB France Director.

ISABELLE VISEUX-POLETTI

UTMB France Director

Dear Runners,

The 2023 edition was an extraordinary journey, and this upcoming edition is going to be even more incredible.

Organizing an event of this magnitude mirrors the challenges of an ultramarathon: it requires patience, perseverance, humility, and an unyielding passion.

Through our efforts, we’ve discovered that every obstacle serves as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Like any race, each mile guides us through varying terrain, testing our resilience with both smooth stretches and rugged paths.

Amidst the challenges, it’s our collective ability to confront them head-on that makes the ultimate triumph so rewarding.

Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB is more than just a race; it’s a shared journey where every participant - runner, volunteer, partner, and organizer - contributes to the adventure.

May this second edition reflect your courage, determination, and strenght. We cannot wait to meet you at the start line, to help you leave your dreams.

ENVIRONMENTAL AMBASSADORS

A team of environmental guides will be out there during the event. Their main goal is to promote good environmental practices and keep an eye on the entire route before, during, and after the runners pass through. In 2023, 25 environmental guides helped clean up the trails before the race, collecting 15 kg of trash, and afterward, picking up 2.5 kg of litter. They’re also authorized to disqualify any runners caught deliberately littering the trails, whether by themselves or by their support crew.

13

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND AID STATIONS

Runners, crews, volunteers, and staffwe urge everyone to embrace environmental responsibility.

Our “0 plastic” policy:

According to our BYOU policy, no disposable utensils are distributed during the event. Runners are required to bring their own eating utensils (in addition to the cup included in the mandatory equipment), especially if they intend to consume hot food.

Our aid stations adhere to a “0 disposable plastic bottles” policy. We prioritize the conservation of water resources and produce our own cola and sparkling water. This effort will result in substantial savings for the 2024 edition:

- 3,360 bottles of still water

- 2,280 bottles of cola

- 2,418 bottles of sparkling water

This practice also reduces transportation needs.

Waste management:

Runners are provided small garbage bags at race kit pick-up. These are intended for waste such as gel or food wrappers. We request that all participants carry their waste, including fruit peels, between aid stations. Each aid station is equipped with designated trash cans for

waste separation. The final trash can is located approximately 100 meters past the aid station (clearly marked).

We encourage runners to use rechargeable batteries whenever possible. If not, please hold onto used batteries until they can be disposed of properly in designated containers provided at aid stations or at the finish line.

SOLIDARITY

New this year: charity bibs!

The UTMB Wolrd Series and Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB are more than just trail running races: the organization aims to merge sports and solidarity, creating an atmosphere where athletic achievement goes hand in hand with support for others. In the heart of the Vosges mountains, we are driven by the desire to help everyone achieve their own victories.

30 charity bibs are available for the second edition of the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB. Runniers opting for these bibs make a donation to the UTMB Cares endowment fund, which channels the funds to two local associations engaged in projects related to solidarity, health, inclusion, or the environment. This opportunity allows runners to become ambassadors for the causes they support.

For 2024, the following projects have been selected: - Chateaux Forts d’Alsace association - ELA

Note: donations will be divided equally between these two associations.

SAFETY

ENVIRONMENT AND WEATHER

The races of the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB take place in open countryside with remote sections (certain road network areas, telecommunications...).

Advice on the course:

- If you can’t find the next markers, turn around to find the last marker

- Stay on the paths

KIT

Some common sense appeals to deal with difficult weather:

- Anticipate both cold and extreme heat

- Don’t wait until you are shivering to cover yourself

- Don’t change clothes in the wind: plan ahead or wait until you are under cover

- Protect yourself from the sun

Poles: Be careful with your poles, especially in the first part of the race when the pack is dense. Do not use the straps on the downhill: in case of a sudden fall, they prevent you from catching yourself properly on your hands (injuries to the shoulders, wrists, forearms... or head).

FOOD & HYDRATION

Fluid and food intake should be adapted to weather conditions and fortified with salt throughout the duration of the event. Maintain a good balance between slow and fast sugars.

FATIGUE AND ATTENTION

Places are provided at aid station points to rest and sleep for a while. It is dangerous to sleep alone in the wild. Fatigue and lack of alertness can be the cause of an accident. Run below your capacity (especially in the first part) to save energy for difficult situations such as a sudden change of weather.

MANDATORY PERSONAL INSURANCE

In order to take the start of your race with peace of mind, we remind you that you must have personal accident insurance to cover any search and rescue costs in France. Every year there are runners who do not have sufficient provision. Such insurance can be taken out with the insurance company of your choice.

Since 2022, the UTMB Group has offered its own repatriation insurance, which you can take out at the following link:

LIVETRAIL

The app is the main tool for ensuring your safety as well as providing you with valuable race information (real-time tracking of your race and that of your friends). In case of an emergency, the application allows you to send directly to the organization an SOS via text message giving your GPS position. This helps you to save precious time. It does not however mean that you do not make a call to the Race HQ. It is mandatory to have a working and charged mobile telephone that works in France. Do not set your mobile phone to airplane mode under any circumstances, as we need to be able to contact you before, during and after the race. We strongly recommended installing and using the LiveTrail® application on smartphones, which is essential for your safety. For runners who will

spend more than 15 hours in the race, are advised to bring an external battery. Make sure that the emergency number you provide is the number of the person you want to be alerted in case of a problem.

Very important: To improve your support, check that you have filled in your phone number in your account during the race. You can update it right up to the start of your race. IT IS MANDATORY

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT

Choosing suitable equipment is a key factor to the success of your race. Be sure to test your kit and your equipment before the big day to avoid unwanted surprises.

Why is mandatory equipment required ?

During the month of May in the Alsace Grand Est area, the weather can change very quickly from very hot (more than 30°C), to very cold, with rain, hail or even snow. Your equipment must be suitable for confronting all types of conditions and allow you to spend one or two nights outdoor, on the race route, depending on your speed of progress. In case of an incident, your equipment must also allow you to wait for the rescue team in sufficiently safe conditions.

You must carry the mandatory equipment with you during the whole race - from start to finish - or you will be penalized. Race stewards may check your equipment at any time during the race.

Don’t forget that the equipment we request includes an essential list of basic items that each trail runner must adapt according to their own abilities. We highly recommend you to test it during training sessions under different conditions and to carry everything you need with you.

42
MANDATORY EQUIPMENT

Additional kits required depending on weather conditions

The “hot weather” and “cold weather” kits are an essential part of the mandatory equipment. Depending on the weather conditions, the organization may ask participants to carry some additional mandatory equipment items. In this case, runners will be informed before the opening of the race pack collection for their race. Each participant must then present their mandatory equipment - including the additional kit activated by the organization - to get their race bib.

Choose clothes that allow good protection in the mountains against cold, wind and snow, and therefore provide greater safety and ensure a better performance. All clothing must be the runner’s size and must not be altered after leaving the factory.

You must carry your equipment in a bag that we will tag when you receive your bib and you cannot change it during the race.
