HUMANS, FIRST AND FOREMOST UTMB® Mont-Blanc is a story of men and women. A great adventure driven by strong values and a common vision, that of harmony and diversity among people. The valleys that surround Mont Blanc are one of those rare regions where there is still a strong connection between people who live there and the great outdoors. It’s this rapport with nature that unites the inhabitants of the Mont-Blanc region around a common project, that of sharing, beyond the borders, their know-how and their relation with the mountain and its landscapes. AN EVENT OPEN TO THE WORLD

The UTMB® Mont-Blanc is undeniably a large family composed of women and men, volunteers and service providers, partners and local officials, tourism and mountain professionals, hut owners... They all gather together around a common goal: to share those values and heritage of which they are proud. They share all of this with runners from all over the world, men and women from 5 continents. The last week of August American, Chinese, Japanese, Brazilian, Argentinean, Omani, Spanish, South African and Australian runners meet at the feet of the Mont-Blanc... This is the opportunity for runners and Friends of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc to meet and experience a great adventure together.

THE EXPERIENCE OF EACH PARTICIPANT AT THE HEART OF THE ORGANIZATION’S CONCERNS

To ensure that this adventure continues throughout the years, UTMB® MontBlanc works to guarantee that each participant’s experience is authentic and complete. High-quality organization, race monitoring, discovery of the territory, beauty of the races... All these features contribute to improve the quality of the experience. UTMB® Mont-Blanc is definitely a story of women and men united around a common vision: that of diversity, of sharing, excellence and passion.

THANK YOU ! Based on centuries of friendship, exchange and sharing

around the common heritage of the Mont-Blanc, UTMB® Mont-Blanc has forged strong links with the region. For 18 years, these men and women have been putting their know-how and expertise at the service of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc event. Thanks to this excellence and knowledge of the territory, UTMB® Mont-Blanc is a logistical success that both entertains and shines brightly to the international community, as it passes through 3 countries, 18 municipalities, 7 valleys and 800 km of trails in one week. In each valley, the hospitality and efficiency of these men and women, who the organizing team calls Friends of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, participate in the smooth running of the event. With them, it is possible to welcome the entire communities of both trail runners and outdoors enthusiasts under the best conditions every year. Strong bonds were forged around simple and authentic moments: the energy on the starting line, the friendliness of an aid station, the beauty of running at night, the adventures after the race.... The event is an opportunity to gather all this positive energy around a common adventure. UTMB® Mont-Blanc has been a link between the territories and its inhabitants for 18 editions. Thanks to you all. UTMB® 2021

THE EVENT

ECO-RESPONSIBILITY With an event around Mont Blanc and on a territory unique in the world, it is essential to remain committed to our values and to develop all the necessary actions to preserve this extraordinary nature.

G.E.S.I.

WWF® FRANCE

RAISING AWARENESS

The achievements of the partnership

The UTMB Mont-Blanc is one of first signatories of the Charter for Eco- Responsibility in Big International Sporting Events (GESI). By doing this the organization reaffirms its engagement in favor of sustainable development. This charter is supported by the Minister for Sport, WWF® France and 46 signatories (organizers of sporting events and equipment managers). ®

On the ground, you are going to meet the ambassadors for the environment who have the mission of accompanying you in the protection of the environment. In order to better understand the natural environment in which you evolve, we have created a specific sign- posting system. Feel free to ask the ambassadors!

UTMB® Mont-Blanc continues its commitment to the environment by partnering with WWF® France. Beyond the work to reduce the environmental impact of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc, the partnership aims to prove that an internationally-known event can promote respect for the environment and participate in the sustainable development of the region it calls home.

The 100% sustainable refreshment stand: a test was carried out at the Contamines TDS aid station with a 100% sustainable refreshment stand! Food came from WWF recommended brands, produced locally and free of singleuse packaging. The testing was successful and in 2021, we will launch phase 2 of the test (the ultimate goal is to expand to all refreshment stands on the UTMB® Mont-Blanc races).

The activities and children’s races together with the lynx programme: activities are carried out by the WWF during the children’s races in Chamonix and on the small square in Mont-Blanc during the Ultra-Trail show.

59 WWF bibs to support the Lynx protection programme and the actions carried out by the WWF between 2019 and 2021.

CARRY YOUR TRASH

Supporters leave no trash along the race-route. Like the runners, think about carrying your trash in a designated bag.

BYOU

As from this year, the organization will not distribute any disposable cutlery, beakers/cups or bowls at the life bases and refreshment posts. Runners and volunteers are asked to carry their own utensils if they wish to eat hot food (soup, pasta). Why not do the same for your picnics?

PROTECTED NATURAL AREAS

The UTMB® Mont-Blanc races go through protected nature zones in France, Italy and Switzerland. On the ground, please refer to the signaling system with the current rules. In any case, camping and campfires are forbidden, as is all use of drones. Respect the rules of the nature reserves!

« Two years after the signing by the UTMB® Mont-Blanc of the charter of 15 eco-responsible commitments of WWF® France and the French Ministry of Sports, we are proud to announce today a partnership to further support the UTMB® Mont-Blanc in its environmental stewardship. Together, we will demonstrate that it is possible for sporting excellence and exemplary environmental stewardship to coexist. Protecting our planet is a long-term race and we need the big players in the sport to take up this challenge! » Isabelle Autissier, President of WWF® France

RACES

ELITES

Each new edition of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc is its own epic sporting event, complete with twists and turns, powerful emotions, flashes of brilliance, and no shortage of suspense. Which runners will be attempting to crush the courses this year? Here’s our overview of the favorites for 2021!

UTMB

®

THE FAVOURITES - WOMEN Courtney Dauwalter

It is rumoured that the Englishwoman Beth Pascall is the athlete to follow this season, and her victory in the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run definitely confirms this. The title holder, Courtney Dauwalter, has been more discreet this season but has already shown the extent of her talent in 2019. If she is at the level she was two years ago, she is certainly one to watch. Americans Katie Schide and Kaytlyn Gerbin are also serious contenders for the victory, and their progression and desire to do well is undeniable. The French participants Audrey Tanguy and Camille Bruyas, the Swedish Mimmi Kokta and the Dutch Ragna Debats are also among the athletes to watch closely, given their experience and high-level performances.

THE FAVOURITES - MEN Ekaterina Mityaeva

Among the favourites for the men’s is American Jim Walmsley, the Frenchmen François D’Haene and Xavier Thévenard, as well as the Spaniard Pau Capell with 7 victories between them. Tim Tollefson, who finished 3rd in the UTMB® in 2016 and 2017 will be keen to perform well after two consecutive failures in 2018 and 2019. A potential ‘surprise’ favourite is the Russian Dimitry Mityaev and the Spaniard Pablo Villa, who have shown promise to deliver strong performances. That being said, nothing is set in stone in ultra-racing and the suspense remains.

TDS

®

THE FAVOURITES - WOMEN

Stian Angermund

After a successful 2019 season (2nd in the 90km Mont Blanc Marathon and 1st in the Dolimiti Extreme Trail), the Italian Martina Valmassoi will be a key contestant in the upcoming TDS®. She should also be able to count on the Englishwoman Holly Page as a close contender, who is never far from winning when she starts a race. The American Rory Bosio will be making her comeback to the event after her second place in 2018. She knows the course and the event very well and has already finished 2nd in the TDS® in 2018. Russia’s Ekaterina Mityaeva and Nepalese star Mira Rai are also great champions capable of making a difference.

THE FAVOURITES - MEN Luis Alberto Hernando

After his attempt to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, British runner Thomas Evans will compete in the TDS®, which will be held in the Beaufortain for the second year. He should find in his wake an armada of Frenchmen including Benoit Girondel, Arthur Joyeux-Bouillon, Antoine Guillon and Martin Kern, all of which are strong contenders. They will also have to deal with the Spaniards who love ultra-running, are keen to perform well and train intensively. Others to watch out for are Borja Fernandez Fernandez, Clemente Cristofer Mora, Tofol Casterner Bernat and Marcos Ramos Gonzales.

UTMB® 2021

10

CCC

®

THE FAVOURITES - WOMEN

In the women’s race, Ruth Croft seems to be untouchable this season after her victory in New Zealand, followed by the Ultra-Trail Australia and her second place in California last month. She will still have to deal with more than 20 elite athletes such as Megan McKenzie, Emily Schmitz and Yiou Wang. They may be looking to break the CCC® record, which is held by Chinese athlete Miao Yao in her outstanding performance of 11:57 in 2018.

MADE FOR OUTSIDE

THE FAVOURITES - MEN

On the CCC®, Luis Alberto Hernando will defend his title against Stian Angermund, who will try his hand at the distance and who has already won the OCC in 2019, or the American Jared Hazen, who is among the best runners on the other side of the Atlantic and who trains with a certain Jim Walsmley. Among the French, Nicolas Martin, Thibaut Garrivier (2nd in the CCC in 2019) and Thibaut Baronian will be the three French favourites for victory. The Chinese Shen Jiasheng, second in the Ultra-Trail® World Tour in 2019, is returning to the race after his aborted attempt in 2019 and should also have a great card to play.

OCC

THE FAVOURITES - WOMEN

What an incredible entry this year! Perhaps one of the strongest in the history of the race. With no less than 39 top athletes entered in the Franco-Swiss race, the reigning world champion Frenchwoman Blandine L’Hirondelle will have her work cut out for her. She will be up against China’s Miao Yao, who is very fast and has already shown the full extent of her talent in 2018 on the CCC®. They will probably be challenged by the Spaniards Sheila Avilez Castano and Anna Comet, who always perform well in this type of race. The Americans also covet this race, with the presence of Anna Mae Flynn and Taylor Nowlin. However, watch out for the Norwegian Yngvild Kaspersen who will be coming to the event for the first time and who has a solid track record and a good pace.

THE FAVOURITES - MEN

Here too, a dream line-up awaits the spectators with more than 130 elite runners registered for the event! An amount never reached before in 6 editions of the OCC. Among the favourites include the Vertical Kilometre specialist Rémi Bonnet (CH), the explosive Hayden Hawks (USA), the very efficient Elhousine Elazzaou (MO), the fast-improving Frenchman Thomas Cardin (FR), the Skyrunning specialists Jonathan Albon (UK), Ruy Ueda (JP) and Oriol Cardona Col (ES); the list of contenders for victory is incredible. With such a high calibre of participants, the record of the event, which is held by Stian Angermund could fall. See you at the end of August to find out.

TRANSPORTS

AN AMBITIOUS TRANSPORT POLICY FOR AN ECO-RESPONSIBLE EVENT In an effort to encourage a shift away from individual vehicle use, the UTMB® Mont-Blanc has put in place an extensive public transport system in collaboration with transportation companies in France (Transdev), Italy (ATR) and Switzerland (TMR). The visiting public will now have easy access to the existing network of public transportation, supplemented by special UTMB®BUS lines. This unique network is available for use by runners, accompanying guests and also for the general public who wish to follow the race all around MontBlanc in France, Italy and Switzerland. TRANSPORTS FOR RUNNERS

This system enables the runners to be transported to the start of the 4 races in Italy and Switzerland, namely the MCC, the TDS®, the OCC and the CCC®. The organisation offer a solution for all runners who wish to get to the start of their race without using a personal vehicle. This system operates throughout the valley, from Servoz to Vallorcine, and stops at all public stops to pick up runners and take them to the start of their race, in this way they massively reduce the use of personal vehicles.

TRANSPORT NETWORK

The UTMB® Mont-Blanc organisation team, in collaboration with the three cross-border operators (Transdev, ATR, TMR), has set up an exceptional service for following the race open to all supporters in order to get to all the points where the runners pass around Mont Blanc. This transport (UTMB®BUS) operates according to each race and allows people to arrive in time at each aid station point in order to follow their runner or simply to enjoy the atmosphere of the race as the runners pass through. The organisation is also working with the Communauté de communes de la vallée de Chamonix-MontBlanc to promote the use of the existing public transport network. The UTMB® is communicating on the free access to the network for all those who have a guest card and this year is renewing the introduction of a special Chamonix Valley transport coupon for all supporters.

THE 12TH EDITION OF THE TDS® IS GOING TO BE MEMORABLE

More beautiful, more technical and more adventurous, the route features a longer course that passes through the Beaufortain mountains. The Cormet de Roselend life base will be relocated to Beaufort village. Supporters will be able to benefit from the town’s infrastructure and facilities. The route will also pass through Hauteluce, with its many hamlets, its alpine chalets and its breathtaking view of Mont-Blanc. All supporters can count on the warmth and enthusiasm of the Beaufortain locals who enjoy showing off their alpine village, renowned for its authenticity and friendliness.

Prologue Tuesday at 18:00 in Chamonix Race Wednesday at 09:00 in Courmayeur 15km - 1000 mt elevation | 1999 - 2001 8km - 600 mt elevation | 2002 - 2003 4km - 200 mt elevation | 2004 - 2005 A challenge dedicated to young runners from 14 to 22 years old The YCC (Youth Chamonix Courmayeur) is a race organized in collaboration with the UCPA of Argentière and the commune of Courmayeur. It is composed of a prologue in the form of a fast race in Chamonix at the place du Triangle de l’Amitié and a trail in total autonomy, starting from Courmayeur

The UTMB® Mont-Blanc has joined together with 3 other organisers to create «The Young Trail Challenge», the 1st trail-running challenge reserved for junior runners in the categories of 1 Juniors and Espoirs. A true spotlight on the young of the Trail-Running World!

ACCOMPANYING PERSONS

SUPPORTING THE RUNNERS ALONG THE RACE ROUTE AND IN THE VILLAGES Between 2003 and today, what a long way we have come! From one single race in 2003 with 700 runners, to the event today which gathers 10 000 runners and 7 events which each have their reason for existing. If the event has gained in notoriety, its values haven’t changed: fair-play, respect for others and the majestic outdoors, conviviality... For each person who participates in the UTMB® Mont-Blanc to have an unforgettable experience, a certain number of rules of the game are to be respected along the race itinerary. ACCOMPANYING ZONE

The runners, upon registering, have committed to respecting the regulations. Those accompanying them must do likewise to avoid putting them in the wrong with regard to their commitments. Reminder: running beside a participant outside of the zones, which are labelled as such in the proximity of the refreshment posts, is strictly forbidden and exposes the runner to a penalty of between 15 and 10 minutes. Concretely this penalty engenders a regression in the ranking and for certain runners it is the risk of not being within the time limit. Be careful not to confuse the zone of accompaniment (several hundred meters before and after each refreshment post, limits of which are clearly marked) with the zone of assistance (the area of the refreshment post reserved for this use). One could state that in the accompaniment zone you may only be accompanied not assisted!

YOU ALSO !

A short reminder of the rules of good manners to be applied in all the municipalities crossed by the UTMB® Mont-Blanc (but not only)! Set a good example and make the celebration even more beautiful: • I collect my waste and use bins and selective sorting stations • I respect private properties and their surroundings • I prefer public transportation and I use official car parking areas (wild parking is strictly forbidden in all municipalities) • In the evening and early morning, I respect the inhabitants by controlling the noise I make • At all times, I respect the instructions given by the organization and the police. Enjoy your UTMB® Mont-Blanc, everyone!

SUPPORT AREA

Personal assistance is tolerated only at certain refreshment posts, in the zone specifically reserved for this use, upon the presentation of an «Assistance» ticket (see below) and upon the agreement of the chief of post. This assistance can only be assured by one single person, without specific equipment other than one bag of a volume of 30 litres maximum. Assistance given by a team professional, or any other professional person, medical or paramedical – even if they are a parent - is strictly forbidden. 1 ticket per assistance post 1 ticket = 1 person

Be aware of the fact that some Support Areas may be outdoors. Gear up accordingly. 31
