Dear Prospective Student: Thank you for your interest in the College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Our college is an extraordinary place to pursue an education in architecture, landscape architecture or interior design. It is an intense learning community with gifted students and faculty who are passionate about what they do. They truly take pride in the daily life of a flourishing educational environment. We are honored by the fact that the college’s undergraduate architecture program was highly ranked in the 2011 edition of America’s Best Architecture and Design Schools published by DesignIntelligence. Without doubt, an education in architecture and design at UT is one of the best values in higher education. The Princeton Review recently named UT both a “Best Value” College and one of “The Best 377 Colleges.” The 2012 Fiske Guide to Colleges also cited UT’s strong architecture program as support to UT being one of the “Best and Most Interesting” colleges in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain. Our students have a broad range of opportunities to engage the profession. Companies and firms interface with the college to establish short and long-term relationships that generate sponsored studios, design/build projects, immersive urban design opportunities, and outreach activities. Through the Robert B. Church Endowment, the world is brought to Knoxville in the form of lectures, seminars, critiques, workshops, and teaching by visiting practicing professionals. Additionally, Knoxville is extended to the world through our exceptional study abroad programs, the work of its students, our internationally and nationally recognized faculty and our 3,000+ alumni. Each of the college’s programs begin with a mastery of basics, advancing to in-depth exposure to the knowledge, skills and aesthetic judgment expected of a professional. The college is a recognized leader, nationwide, for its innovative approach to professional education, with our New Norris House winning national honors in 2011 for the Creative Integration of Practice in the Academy by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). The New Norris House also recently earned the top green building classification, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. In addition to focused study within each of the college’s disciplines, opportunities exist for discovery within a rich educational community fostering integration across programs. This past fall, the UT Solar House, an experimental structure built by a team of faculty members and students in partnership with industry, placed eighth in the world at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon and went on to be seen by one-million people as a exhibit of the Smithsonian on the National Mall. As the demands of practice change at an unprecedented pace it is crucial to have an educational environment that supports innovative learning. Our college is keenly aware that we are preparing students for a workplace that will be unlike the past. To meet the challenges of the future––to be ready for the world––our students need to have access to state of the art design and fabrication technologies, to faculty members and visitors with specialized expertise, and additional opportunities for collaboration and international exchange. THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN History and Rankings
Founded in 1965, the College of Architecture and Design houses the only accredited undergraduate architecture, graduate architecture, and landscape architecture programs in Tennessee. Its three disciplines – interior design, architecture and landscape architecture – are the top-ranked programs in the state. UT Undergraduate Architecture has placed on national lists several times, including its citation as a top 20 program in 2011 by DesignIntelligence, a benchmark for architecture and design school rankings.
Financial Aid + Tuition
Nearly all students of the college receive financial aid throughout their course of study. UT grants financial aid to more than 75 percent of all students, and was named a “Best Value College” by the 2013 Edition of Princeton Review. For the 2012-13 academic year, the college’s graduate programs in architecture and landscape architecture gave the equivalent of more than $1,000,000 in the form of assistantships, chancellor’s fellowships, college scholarships, grants and other competitive financial awards. UT’s graduate and undergraduate tuitions rates are consistently below the national average.

With a mission to educate future design professionals, the college is committed to the development of individuals with creative imagination, intellectual curiosity, and technical knowledge. Students often see their work realized through realworld projects including urban planning through the college’s multidisciplinary collaboration with the Nashville Civic Design Center and Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission; rural and international design through the Haiti Project, an effort that has already designed and built a school and housing for teachers in Fonddes-Blancs, Haiti; and the New Norris House, a national, award-winning model for sustainable design.

Experience + Mission
UNDERGRADUATE INTERIOR DESIGN Interior designers create new environments for people by shaping space, light, and materials on the inside of architectural settings. From interiors such as offices, hospitals, museum exhibitions, retail stores, merchandise displays, hotels, restaurants, schools and traditional home environments, interior designers apply their design thinking skills to solve complex real-world problems that result in improved and enriched human experiences. An education in Interior Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, provides a foundation in design fundamentals, discipline knowledge and studio practice essential for a professional career and critical thinking skills valuable for a lifetime of learning. The primary mode of study for the interior design student occurs every semester in a design studio. The design studio is a rich educational setting where students practice interior design by working on projects. The creation of interior design projects at the University of Tennessee results in student generated proposals that are culturally significant, innovative, logical, and provide beauty, meaning, and utility to communities and the world. It is the goal of the UT Interior Design Program to educate students to formulate, propose and develop realistic yet creative interior design solutions for a breadth of career opportunities. Supporting design studio are a series of rich professional, historical, and theoretical courses applicable to the creation of projects in the studio setting. Students are also required to complete either a summer internship program in a professional design office or participate in an international travel program. The award-winning Art + Architecture Building houses the interior design program where students share space and collaborate with the architecture and landscape architecture students in the College of Architecture and Design.
Curriculum + Degree
The UT College of Architecture and Design offers a comprehensive interior design curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. All aspects of interior planning are included in the educational background for students whose goal is to qualify as practitioners in professional interior design. The curriculum consists of an orderly sequence, which normally requires four years and a summer internship or international program to complete. The UT Interior Design Program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
Admissions
In order to maintain a successful learning culture, admission to the UT Bachelor of Science in Interior Design Program has become increasingly selective. Students are evaluated based on grades and test scores, as well as the submission of a portfolio of visual works. Please refer to the website, http://www.arch.utk.edu/InteriorDesign/, for the most up-to-date information on the admissions requirements. Applications are due by December 1. 7
Central to UT Undergraduate Architecture is the program’s commitment to study abroad. Every student, during their course of study, will travel to one of our many programs, which include opportunities to Finland, Poland, Japan, Germany and more.

The Bachelor of Architecture Program has been the leading architecture program in Tennessee for nearly fifty years. We continually seek the best and brightest minds, full of wonder and the desire to realize dreams. We value students with a range of life experiences who believe that the opportunity to build a place - a piece of the world - is to have the capacity and responsibility to change for the better.
Design Culture
The focus of architectural education is the design studio, where one-to-one facultystudent interaction and peer-to-peer learning provide an intertwining of the core values found in our studio culture. Our student:faculty ratio is 15:1, which provides ideal conditions for both critique and conversation. In this community the purpose of study is both individual and collaborative explorations of critical issues and fundamental ideas through model, drawing and constructed reality in a high-energy, technically advanced learning environment. These activities provide a distinctive foundation for the pursuit of a successful career in architecture, or indeed, in a range of related fields of endeavor.
Degree Experience
UT is proud to provide a diverse and multidisciplinary approach to design education, incorporating issues from a variety of perspectives, including our in-college disciplines of interior design and landscape architecture. We begin in the design studio in the first semester of the first year, and we integrate experiences from the realms of drawing and making, the structure and nature of building and construction. Students often focus their studio course work outside of the classroom through real-world projects. Opportunities to study and apply design to action, locally outside of the classroom, occur through numerous project types. The Knoxville Downtown Studio, the Burlington Studio, the Nashville Civic Design Center, and various partnerships with institutions abroad all offer unique environments for learning. In the these, as in the design studio, students imagine and create, use multiple techniques of critical thinking and making, and ultimately test original ideas by a repeated process of constructing and evaluating prototypes in settings that range from the wood shop, technology-rich studios, and the well-crafted, well-constructed outcomes in furniture and building design.
Degree Experience
Admission to the Bachelor of Architecture Program at Tennessee is highly competitive, but the rewards of a successful application are great. The program is a studiocentered, five-year undergraduate, first-professional degree accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Applications to the program, which are evaluated upon a portfolio, formal application, tests scores and grades, are due by November 1 for consideration for university-wide scholarships and awards. The final deadline for all applications is December 1.

Through research partnerships with the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Tennessee Valley Authority and others, graduate students were able to bring the Living Light House to life. The project competed in the international, collegiate design-build competition, the Solar Decathlon and transformed into a mobile exhibition that traveled to five cities.

Overview + Degrees
GRADUATE ARCHITECTURE The core values of the UT Graduate Architecture Program are based on a designcentered curriculum that promotes personal development, ethical imperatives, critical thinking and ecologically sustainable practices. Our program offers professional and post-professional degrees leading to the Master of Architecture, distinguished by their length of study and curricula. Each curriculum (1.5, 2, and 3.5 years) offers certificates/concentrations in Urban Design, Conservation and Stewardship, High Performance Buildings, and Sustainable Design. Among the new degree programs being developed are: a Master in Urban Design and Development, a Master in Construction Management in collaboration with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and joint degree programs with the College of Business Administration.
Assistantships + Aid
More than two-thirds of students in the three curricular tracks of the UT Master of Architecture Program receive some form of financial assistance during their tenure in our program. For the 2012-13 Academic Year, the Graduate Architecture Program awarded approximately $1,000,000 in the form of graduate assistantships, Chancellor’s Distinguished Fellowships, School of Architecture scholarships, grants and other competitive financial awards; an average of over $15,000 for each student in our program.
Faculty + Scholarship
With an average 10:1 student/faculty ratio in studios and seminars (one of the lowest in the country), our program maintains high levels of teaching excellence. During the past decade, our internationally recognized faculty have published more than a dozen critically acclaimed books and hundreds of articles and presentations in scholarly and professional journals, conference proceedings, and at scholarly or professional meetings. Many of our faculty maintain award-winning architectural practices, their work published in Dwell, Architectural Record, the Journal of Architectural Education, and other topical journals.
Research + Design Practice
The College of Architecture and Design has substantial offerings in research-oriented design/build projects. They include initiatives in Haiti, Columbia, and two nationally recognized award winning projects: the UT Solar House, Living Light, and the LEED Platinum New Norris House. Design/build work is supported by the FabLab, a large-scale industrial facility for full-size construction projects. A summer intern program with a research component is new to our program. We are working to place our students, strategically, in some of the finest firms in New York, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Houston, and Dallas. Further, we are developing graduate level full-semester offcampus studies options to include programs in Helsinki, Rome, Florence, and short duration summer studies in a changing array of international locales such as Japan, Italy, Switzerland, Eastern Europe, and Nordic countries.

Service learning projects like the Haiti Project, The Knoxville MSA Low Impact Development Application Guide, and the New Norris House provide opportunities for hands-on learning, outreach, and community engagement.

Landscape Architeccture
UT Degrees: Landscape Architectural Studies
GRADUATE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE The profession of landscape architecture integrates both applied arts and applied sciences. It is a profession that plans, designs, and manages our environments. Today, landscape architects deal with the increasingly complex relationships between the built and natural environments. Landscape architects plan and design: • traditional places such as parks, residential developments, campuses, and gardens • institutional centers, and waterfront developments • the restoration of natural places disturbed by humans such as wetlands, stream corridors, brownfields and grayfileds, mined areas, and forested land • preservation planning projects for national, regional, and local historic sites Most states require that those seeking or holding licensure as a landscape architect hold an accredited professional degree. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, offers an accredited professional Master of Landscape Architecture degree in addition to post-professional MLA, MSLA, and MALA degrees: • Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA_1) This degree is for individuals holding an undergraduate degree in a field other than landscape architecture, and intend to become landscape architecture professionals. The MLA_1 can usually be earned in three years of full-time study. Students with undergraduate degrees in landscape design, architecture, or other design fields can apply for advanced standing, which may reduce the time of study by up to one year. • Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA_2) is a second professional degree for persons who hold an undergraduate professional degree in landscape architecture and wish to pursue specialized studies. It normally requires about 18 months to complete. • MA/MS in Landscape Architecture is a degree for persons who want to conduct research in landscape architecture, but do not seek to be registered professional practitioners. These degrees in landscape architecture studies are useful for those who wish to have a foundation in the field of landscape architecture, or to support employment options in related fields. The UT Landscape Architecture Program is the only landscape architecture program in the state of Tennessee approved by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board (LAAB). Applications are due February 1.
Intercollegiate + Interdisciplinary Education
At UT, you have the opportunity to study landscape architecture design in an innovative and exciting interdisciplinary degree program that utilizes the strengths and expertise of the College of Architecture and Design, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and related colleges and disciplines. This enables students to build an educational experience that critically addresses design, sustainable practices and ethical stewardship of conserved, rural, and urbanized landscapes. The program fosters community partnerships while providing educational, technical, and cultural support to increase the livability of communities. These partnerships with local and regional industries and governments include the Tennessee Valley Authority, National Park System, Department of Energy, Tennessee Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Scholarships + Fellowships
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND FINANCIAL AID Scholarships at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, are available from many sources to undergraduate and graduate students. Over $23,000,000 in scholarship funds are awarded annually, with four-year, one-year, and renewable scholarships available. The College of Architecture and Design, too, is fortunate to have many local alumni and members of the professional community who have funded a variety of scholarships and student financial assistance packages. Undergraduate applicants should apply for scholarships by November 1 through the UT Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Graduate students will apply through the college by February 1. Nominations by the graduate programs will be made to the UT Graduate School for the university’s larger fellowships.
Graduate Assistantships
Graduate assistantships are awarded on the basis of academic accomplishment, financial need, and needs of the program. A tuition waiver and monthly stipend is awarded to students who receive assistantships. Graduate assistants support the college in numerous ways, including helping faculty members with course work, special projects, research, publications etc. Those receiving these awards are expected to work for approximately ten (10) hours a week. Typical graduate assistant appointments include: •
Teaching assistant in various courses.
•
Research assistant on faculty teams: sustainable design, urban analysis, etc. as related to the academic mission.
Students should contact the college’s graduate programs directly for information on graduate assistantship positions. Other departments and programs on campus, including our partner colleges, may also have graduate assistantship positions available. Inquiries for positions outside of the program should be directed through the UT Graduate School. Internships
Internships may be available with programs on and off campus. In the past, these have included internships or assistantships at local and national private firms, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE), Tennessee Water Resources Research Center, Nashville Civic Design Center, and at the East Tennessee Community Design Center, which provides non-profit institutions and communities with professional design services that they could not otherwise afford.
