The undergraduate and graduate programs at UTC’s College of Business, in both business and accounting, are accredited by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

The beginning of a new academic year is always an exciting time for faculty, staff and students. That excitement is heightened by the addition of new programs, new events and new faculty in the College of Business. The College is so fortunate to have such dedicated faculty and staff. They are the people who work every day to ensure that our students are given the academic grounding and the real-world business skills they need to achieve meaningful careers and have a positive impact on our community. This issue of “Venture” highlights some of those faculty members: Dr. J.R. Clark, who holds the Scott L. Probasco, Jr. Chair of Free Enterprise; Dr. Lisa Burke-Smalley, a UC Foundation Professor in our Management Department; and the six new faculty who joined us over the summer. This issue also highlights a variety of programs and events hosted by the College of Business, including our Scholarship Awards Banquet. Scholarships are critical to the college and it was wonderful to honor both the student recipients and the donors who make our scholarship program possible. The students we honored represented some of the best and the brightest that UTC has to offer. The donors who provided the support for those scholarships had the opportunity to meet those individuals who will benefit from the legacy their donations have established. Your support of the College of Business is part of that legacy as well. As alumni, donors, mentors, ambassadors and community partners, you help us as we educate students and as we serve businesses and organizations in the Chattanooga region. Thank you so much for all that you do. Robert Dooley Dean

J.R. Clark, holder of the Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise Elected Treasurer of Mont Pelerin Society The Mont Pelerin Society elected Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise, J.R. Clark to the office of Treasurer at its 2014 biannual congress in Hong Kong. Membership in the Mont Pelerin Society is highly selective, international in scope, limited to approximately 500 members, and includes Nobel laureates, heads of state, nobility, and internationally recognized scholars. Since its founding in 1947, the Society has emerged as one of the most prestigious and influential organizations of academics operating in the world today. The global professional organization is dedicated to facilitating an exchange of research and ideas between scholars to strengthen the principles and practice of a free society. Clark was elected to MPS membership in 1996, was key organizer of the Society’s 2003 international conference in Chattanooga, elected to the Board of Directors in 2006, and Vice President in 2010. Clark’s election as Treasurer will move the international headquarters of the Mont Pelerin Society to The University

of Tennessee at Chattanooga and contributes significantly to the academic prestige of the university. “The responsibility of managing a global organization of highly independent, world class scholars, across the spectrum of their languages, cultures, and time zones is going to be challenging, but also likely to provide significant recognition and opportunities for UTC,” Clark said. “It is a challenge we are fortunate to have.” J.R. Clark earned the Ph.D. in Economics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute under the Nobel Laureate James Buchanan. He holds the Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and is the author of six books and numerous academic articles published in the United States, Austria, Japan, Italy, Canada, France, India and Russia. The mission of the Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise is to develop, through the educational field, that type of political, social, and economic environment which will permit private enterprise to achieve its proper perspective in American economic life.

Prior to coming to UTC, Clark was with the Joint Council on Economic Education in New York, chaired a large economics department in New Jersey, held the Hendrix Chair at UT Martin, and was a research fellow at Princeton University. Currently, he serves as Secretary/Treasurer for both the Southern Economic Association and The Association of Private Enterprise Education. His consulting experience includes Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, universities, and publishing firms as well as performing litigation support for law firms in personal injury, wrongful death, business evaluations and matrimonial cases. He has received significant grants in entrepreneurship from the J. Howard Pew Freedom Foundation Trust, is Past President of The Association of Private Enterprise, and held seats on the boards of the Palmer R. Chitester Fund, The William B. Cockroft Foundation, and Kenco Corp. Clark holds an Airline Transport Pilot’s rating and currently flies light jet aircraft.

“In addition to the course work, I try to pass along life lessons as well,” she said. “I encourage students to play to their passions and to remember that attitude is largely a choice.”

Students who have taken a class from Lisa Burke-Smalley, Professor of Management in the UTC College of Business, use words like “engaged,” “energetic,” “enthusiastic” and even “entertaining” to describe her teaching style. Speak to her for just a few minutes and that enthusiasm for students and for her subject matter becomes evident.

Burke-Smalley holds a Ph.D. in human resources/organizational behavior from Indiana University Kelley School of Business. She is a UC Foundation Professor and 2007 recipient of the UTC Professor of the Year award. She has published numerous academic journal articles and book chapters and edited her own book on management training, “High Impact Training Solutions.” A former student also anonymously created a recurring national scholarship in her name through the National Society for Human Resource Management Foundation.

Veterans Entrepreneurship Program 2014 Training and mentoring program celebrates third year of success For the third consecutive year, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Veterans Entrepreneurship Program offered free training and mentoring in entrepreneurship and small business management to a group of disabled and service distinguished veterans. Participants in this year’s VEP attended boot camp on the UTC campus July 19-26. In addition to entrepreneurship courses taught by College of Business faculty and guest speakers, the 19 delegates met with community leaders, top military officials, visited businesses and attended a graduation ceremony featuring a keynote address Courtney R. Lewis by former U.S. Representative Zach Wamp. Courtney Lewis, who served in the U.S. Army, described the VEP experience as “tough, but rewarding.”

“Through the VEP, I’ve gained insights and skills that will allow me to grow my production company successfully,” she said. “It’s been amazing being a part of this team.” The program is hosted in partnership with Oklahoma State and the University of Florida. “The VEP builds on the skills that veterans learn from their military careers and helps them focus those skills toward the creation of new ventures,” said Dr. Robert Dooley, Dean of the College of Business. “Our goal is to help veterans create businesses as a means to their own financial wellbeing. We are honored to provide this program to those that have done so much for our country.” Participants in the VEP begin by completing a five-week, online self-study to help develop their business concepts and prepare for the boot camp at UTC. The boot camp exposes VEP participants to the “nuts and bolts” of business ownership through workshops and lessons from faculty as well as guest speakers.

“I came in thinking I knew a lot, but working with the faculty in the VEP taught me how to start and run a business with emphasis on marketing, sales, how to pitch a project, the market... Everything needed for a successful business,” said U.S. Army veteran Glen Shackley of Angels Camp, California. “I believe I’ve gained the leadership and ability to move forward.”

Glen Shackley

Following graduation, delegates receive 10 months of ongoing support from experts in the College of Business. The VEP is free to eligible veterans. The costs of the VEP are underwritten by sponsors, including Walden Security, and private donors, with operations and program development provided by the UTC College of Business.
