CHAPTER 1

THE LAND

Because of its shape, luab County is sometimes referred to as the "key" county. The county is located in west-central Utah and extends westward from the mountains of the Uinta National Forest, near the center of the state, to the desert lands of the Nevada border. It measures approximately 125 miles from east to west and twenty-five miles north to south. Juab's climate would be classified as semiarid, as is almost all of Utah. Temperatures range from a high of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to below zero in winter months. During the summer, flash floods are c o m m o n ; in winter, rapidly developing snowstorms can appear out of nowhere, especially in the western part of the county.

Geology In the study of history it is valuable to understand the physical characteristics of the land upon which people lived, because land can exert a definite impact upon the events that shape lives. The presentday visible geology of Juab C o u n t y includes surface exposures of Precambrian quartzites and agrillites that are some 560 million years
