SEASON OUTLOOK The 2011 Utah baseball team will look to combine youth with experience to have a strong final season in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes return a solid core of players, including 2010 first-team junior AllAmerica catcher C.J. Cron, three-year senior starter Michael Beltran, and all-conference senior pitcher Rick Anton. Utah is also excited about a solid class of newcomers that will be expected to make an immediate impact. “Our team naturally revolves around C.J., and the ability that he brings to us offensively and defensively,” Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. “No matter if he is playing catcher or first base, he is one of the better players in the country and that is going to help us win a lot of games this year. Utah has a difficult schedule ahead with series against Cal, Arkansas, TCU and UAB. The Utes will also play in the prestigious Houston College Classic against powerhouses Texas A&M, Baylor and Kentucky. Also on the schedule is an exhibition game against the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees.

At third base, freshman Trey Nielsen has quickly made an impact and looks to take over the starting role. The all-state selection out of Skyline High School hit .444 his senior season with 10 home runs. Another freshman, Cory Hunt, will be looking to earn playing time in his first season as a backup in the infield. Hunt hit .453 with 11 doubles his senior year at Jordan High School, earning all-state honors. Senior Trent Johnson, who pitched in three games last year for Utah, will also play a role in the infield.

America accolades. Cron was also the NCBWA’s District VIII Player of the Year, the MWC Player of the Year and named as a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, awarded to the top player in collegiate baseball. Cron led the nation last year with 1.65 RBI per game. He also ranked in the top 10 nationally in slugging percentage (fifth, .817) and home runs per game (eighth, 0.41). Jo Jo Sharrar rotated in the catcher position with Cron last year, starting 30 games for the Utes along with nine CATCHERS at designated hitter. He hit .316 on the Catcher will be one of the strongest and season. most experienced positions on the field for Returning to the team after a twoUtah this year. year LDS mission is 2008 all-conference Cron will lead things behind the plate designated hitter Cody Guymon. INFIELD In the infield, the Utes return a solid core in Beltran, Cron, and Mark Moorman but have a tough task in replacing allconference third-baseman Nick Kuroczko as well as two-year starter Tyler Yagi, who is on an LDS mission. Beltran has started all three seasons at shortstop, but will look to move to second base for his senior season. He finished second on the team last year with a .338 batting average and led the MWC in stolen bases (16). Cron and Moorman switched off regularly at first base last year, and will continue that rotation again this season. Moorman hit .241 in 37 games for Utah last year. Newcomer James Brooks will move into the shortstop position. At Cochise College last season, Brooks was an all-region selection after leading the conference in runs scored and finishing second in hits.

C.J. Cron earned several All-America honors last season.

SEASON OUTLOOK OUTFIELD The Utes lose all three starting outfielders from last season. Six different players will be fighting for time in the outfield. All six of them will see playing time as the season begins. The most experienced returning player is junior Gavin Green, who started 15 games last year in the outfield during times when other players were injured. He hit .317 in 20 games for Utah. A pair of newcomers who have been impressive early on are freshman Josh Alexander and junior transfer Shaun Cooper. Alexander, a 19th-round draft pick from last season, was an All-American in high school after hitting .518 with 14 home runs and 45 RBI as a senior. Cooper attended Arizona as a freshman in 2009 before spending last year at Pima College. He was an all-region player at Pima with a .330 batting average, 18 stolen bases and 44 RBI.

Junior Tyson Gonzalez sat out last season after an injury, but has been praised for his defensive ability. Gonzalez played at Salt Lake CC from 2006-07 before an LDS mission. He hit .286 with 18 stolen bases in 2007 for SLCC. Senior Austin Shackelford also has experience, starting six games in the outfield last year. Another player who returns from a mission is sophomore Tyler Relf, who started 24 games his freshman year in 2008.

Rick Anton had a team-high seven wins last year, earning all-MWC honors.

Cody Guymon returns from an LDS mission. He led the MWC in batting average in 2008.

PITCHERS The Utes lose significant experience on the mound with the graduations of starting pitchers Jordan Whatcott, Bryn Card and Andrew Wilding, but a group of younger pitchers will look to build on their experience from last season to step into their shoes. Anton led Utah with seven wins last year, earning second-team all-conference honors. He had a 5.13 ERA with 64 strikeouts. The senior only allowed three home runs, which led the league.

“Anton has been through the battles in the league along with Zach Adams, Brock Duke and Stephen Streich,” Kinneberg said. “We have some maturity and depth on the mound that we probably haven’t had in the past. A healthy Joe Pond will make a big difference in the pitching staff. Tyler Wagner will just be pitching this year which has made a big difference in his approach to the game and his ability on the mound.” Duke, Adams and Wagner, all freshman last year, gained valuable experience last season and the Utes will look for them to step into bigger roles. Duke led Utah with four saves and a team-high 21 appearances. He had 32 strikeouts. Adams was 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA, including two saves and 41 strikeouts. Wagner made a strong impact late in the year. He had three saves and a 2.11 ERA, striking out 23. He also played some in the infield, getting hits on five of his 12 at-bats. Pond sat out last season following Tommy John surgery after playing in 15 games as a freshman. He had a 1-1 record with 20 strikeouts in 2009. Streich enters his senior year as one of Utah’s most consistent relievers. He closed out 13 games for the Utes last year, finishing with a 4-3 record, one save and a 5.45 ERA. Senior Tyler Andersen (14 appearances, 3.71 ERA) will also be relied on in relief. Incoming pitchers who Kinneberg hopes can contribute immediately are freshmen Luke West, Josh Chapman and Ben Mordini as well as junior transfer Kesley Kondo. West led Juan Diego to the 2010 Utah state championship. He was 7-2 with a 2.00 ERA as a senior. Chapman earned all-region honors at Saguaro (Ariz.), leading the team to a state championship. Mordini had a 6-1 record his senior season at Cherry Creek High School (Colo.) with 80 strikeouts. He was drafted in the 41st round last year. Kondo is an all-conference player out of West Los Angeles College. “Mordini, West and Chapman are all really good freshmen pitchers who will see a lot of action in key roles for us,” Kinneberg said. “All three have done a great job in the fall and are progressing nicely. Kondo also adds some depth and variety to our staff.”

The dedicated and personable Bill Kinneberg is in his eighth season at the helm of the University of Utah baseball team. He was named head coach of the program on Sept. 15, 2004, marking his second stint in the Utes’ dugout. Kinneberg led Utah back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1960 in 2009, as the Utes won their first Mountain West Conference tournament with a 9-3 win over San Diego State in the championship game. Utah won two games at NCAA’s, defeating Gonzaga and Georgia Southern in the Fullerton Regional. Since his return to Utah, Kinneberg has infused a winning mentality in the clubhouse. Ryan Khoury (2006) and C.J. Cron (2010) each earned first-team All-America honors and were selected as MWC Player of the Year. Kinneberg has had several players drafted, including Khoury and three-time All-MWC selection Jay Brossman. All-conference pitcher Stephen Fife was Utah’s highest draft pick ever in 2008, going in the third round. Pitchers Brian Budrow and Jordan Whatcott were both drafted in 2009. Kinneberg’s teams have steadily moved up in the conference standings each year and several have rewritten the record books. Brossman holds records for hits, doubles, RBI and total bases. Khoury holds the school record for career runs scored and Corey Shimada ranks first in the record books for triples, stolen bases, runs scored and walks. In 15 seasons as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level, Kinneberg has a record of 423387. He earned his 400th victory in the 2009 NCAA tournament with a win over Gonzaga. Kinneberg has coached collegiate baseball for 26 years. His teams established school records for victories in a season at UTEP in 1985, Wyoming in 1990 and Utah in 1996. Kinneberg’s first stint as the head coach was in 1996, leading the Utes to a 30-22 record. His squad tied for third place in the Western Athletic Conference’s Northern Division. Kinneberg has also made his mark on the national scene. In 2010 he served as the head coach of the US National Team that won a silver medal at the FISU World University Championships in Japan.

Kinneberg has done several stints with USA Baseball. He served as the pitching coach in 2007 and 1999. The 2007 pitching staff turned in a 25-12 mark in international competition, and finished with a scant 1.93 earned-run average. Kinneberg also spent several years as director of the organization’s athlete development program. Prior to joining the Utah staff, Kinneberg was working for the Chicago White Sox organization as a minor league pitching coach. From 1996 through 2001, Kinneberg was the associate head baseball coach at the University of Arizona. The Wildcats were 124-102 and advanced to an NCAA Regional Tournament during Kinneberg’s tenure with the Wildcats. Kinneberg was the head coach at Utah from May 1995 through July 1996. Kinneberg coached three All-Western Athletic Conference athletes during the 1996 season at Utah. The Utes also set four school records, which are still intact today, during Kinneberg’s first stint with the Utes. Prior to his time with the Utes, Kinneberg was an assistant baseball coach at Arizona State from 1992 through 1994. During the 1993 and 1994 seasons, Kinneberg helped lead the Sun Devils to back-to-back appearances in the College World Series. Kinneberg was the head baseball coach at Wyoming from 1986 through 1992. While in charge of the Cowboys’ program, Kinneberg guided his team to the WAC playoffs in five of his seven seasons. In 1990, he earned Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors, leading Wyoming to a 37-18 record. Kinneberg coached 16 AllWestern Athletic Conference players during his seven seasons in Laramie. Kinneberg served as head coach at UTEP in 1985. Kinneberg’s coaching career began in 1980, when he became an assistant coach at UTEP. He served in that capacity for four seasons. In addition to his duties with USA Baseball, Kinneberg worked with the Italian Olympic team in 1984, serving as pitching coach. Kinneberg is a 1980 graduate of the University of Arizona. He attended graduate school at UTEP from 1980-1982. Kinneberg and his wife Janet reside in Sandy, Utah. They have two children, Joe (10) and David (8).

MIKE CRAWFORD

BRYAN KINNEBERG

Pitching Coach 3rd Season

Hitting Coach 4th Season

Mike Crawford is in his third year as the pitching coach for the University of Utah. Last season, Utah led the conference in fewest walks, hits and home runs allowed. The team finished second in opposing batting average and saves, behind only College World Series participant TCU. In his first year in 2009, Crawford coached MLB draft picks Brian Budrow and Jordan Whatcott. Utah also set a school record for strikeouts en route to winning the MWC Tournament. Crawford came to Utah after spending two seasons as associate head coach at Yavapai College where the Roughriders were 41-16-1 in 2008. They climbed to as high as No. 9 in the national polls, and won their league title with a 30-8 mark. Crawford’s pitching staff was one of six schools in the 13-team league with an earned-run average below 4.00 (3.81). It was fourth in the conference strikeouts (393). From 2002-2005, Crawford was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz. He helped the Apaches to a pair of second-place league finishes (2004, 2005), and the 2005 pitching staff had the lowest earned-run average in the conference (2.66). As CC recruiting coordinator, he saw three of his four recruiting classes play for a regional championship. Before that he worked two seasons at Pima College in Tucson, Ariz. Crawford played at the University of Arizona from 1999-2000. He was a starting pitcher for the Wildcats both years and was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of Week in May, 1999. He graduated from UA in 2001 with a bachelor’s of science in communication and went on to get his master’s from the United States Sports Academy in June, 2008. The Tucson native’s playing career began at Yavapai College as a starting pitcher in 1997-98. In 1998, he was named as the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Pitcher of the Year. Crawford and his wife, Sarah, have a five-year-old son, Kolby.

Assistant coach Bryan Kinneberg is in his fourth season on the University of Utah coaching staff. He serves as hitting coach and is the third base coach. Over the past two seasons, Kinneberg has coached All-American C.J. Cron into one of the best hitters in the country. Cron led the nation in RBI per game in 2010. In 2008, Utah led the conference with a .323 batting average. Kinneberg came to the Utes after a two-year stint at Oklahoma State as its volunteer assistant coach. At OSU, he assisted with the hitters and infielders, and coached first base. The Cowboys led the Big 12 in nearly every offensive statistical category in 2007, including batting average (.319), doubles (144), home runs (86) and slugging (.518). In addition, the team fielded at a .971 clip. While on staff at OSU, Kinneberg saw the team make two postseason appearances. In 2007, the Cowboys were one win away from the College World Series, falling to Louisville in the third game of the Super Regional. OSU went 83-41 while Kinneberg was on staff, and had a school record 11 players taken in the MLB draft in 2007. Kinneberg played at North Carolina State where he was part of two NCAA Regional teams. Kinneberg also played for Phoenix College in Peoria, Ariz. He was an all-district player there, ranking among the league’s best hitters. Phoenix played in the NJCAA national title game in 2001. He graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in philosophy. Kinneberg and his wife Stephanie have a toddler son Gavin and infant daughter Ella Grace.

Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the May 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine selected Salt Lake City as “The Best City for Jobs” in both 2007 and 2008. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. The lowest point within city boundaries is 4,210 feet near the Great Salt Lake, and the highest is Grandview Peak at 9,410 feet. The Great Salt Lake (48 miles wide and 90 miles long) is the world’s second largest saltwater lake and the largest lake in the western United States. The city is the cultural, financial, educational, technological, commercial, and communications hub of the

Intermountain West. Utah was named the most technologically advanced state in the 2008 Digital States Survey. Salt Lake is also home to world-renowned medical and technology industries. Cultural and ethnic activities flourish in Salt Lake City and its vibrant downtown features dining, shopping, music and ethnic festivals, art galleries, professional symphony, opera, theater and dance. The annual Sundance Film Festival, which is the largest independent film festival in the U.S., attracts movie stars, celebrities, and thousands of film buffs to the area every year. According to P3/Production Update Magazine, Utah is one of the “10 Best States in the Nation for Film.” Professional sports franchises in Salt Lake City include the Utah Jazz (NBA), Real Salt Lake (Major League Soccer), the Salt Lake Bees (AAA baseball) and the Utah Grizzlies (East Coast Hockey League).

SPRING MOBILE BALLPARK The University of Utah plays in perhaps one of the most beautiful settings in the nation. Nestled in downtown Salt Lake City, but with sprawling views of the 11,000-foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountain range, is Spring Mobile Ballpark. Spring Mobile features seating that curves towards the playing field to enhance sight lines for every seat. The suite level is one of the closest upper decks in the nation, offering fans the amenities of comfort without sacrificing proximity to the field of play. The outfield is asymmetrical (345 feet down the left-field foul line, 386 to the left-center alley, 420 feet to center field, 373 feet to the right-center alley and a 315 feet down the right field line). Right field has a short home run porch; bullpens are on the field, directly in front of the fans. Not only is Spring Mobile field home to the Utes baseball program, but it’s also home to the Salt Lake Bees. The Bees are the Triple-A farm club of the California Angels.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Principles of the Program Strength Training

The idea is centered on accelerating quicker than our opponent. We will do this by concentrating on quick and explosive lifts, combined with quick and explosive agility, sprint and plyometric drills.

Speed Development

Each running session will include acceleration drills more than any other drills. The most important aspect of speed development is the athlete must work at maximal effort in each and every drill.

Flexibility

It is a traditional part of every strength and conditioning program. When the athlete is not able to put a body joint through the proper range of motion, it can affect performance in various ways.

Mental Toughness

These weight training or conditioning sessions push the body way beyond comfort levels, and in some cases, to utter exhaustion.

This allows the student-athlete to develop capacity to push through barriers created by pain and fatigue.

Conditioning

Conditioning is best obtained by working the energy system with volume. Conditioning should be cycled with light, medium and heavy days to avoid over-training. Recovery is often better than work.

Injury Prevention

The Utah athlete will be expected to work harder than anyone else when he/she is injured. We will work with the athletic training staff to coordinate efforts to bring the athlete back to the playing field as quickly as possible.

Motivating

We will coach in a very positive manner, always reinforcing our belief in an athlete as a champion in the making. No one out-works, out-hustles or has more ability than a Utah student-athlete.
