Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2nd Annual CAAS Conference at the University of Texas at Arlington. The theme, Critical Issues in the Black Community, focuses on profiling progressive solutions to social problems and identifying strategies that will drive social change within the Black community specifically and the broader society generally. The conference will also provide students with opportunities to examine their development and role in the community. Established August 2012, CAAS serves as a vital intellectual and social resource for the community, on and off campus. This year’s conference highlights include new opportunities for knowledge along with the innovative sessions that attendees have come to expect: 

Assistant Professor of Sociology UT Arlington

Krystal Beamon is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Faculty Fellow with the Center of African American Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington. She received her Bachelors (Summa Cum Laude), Masters, and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University, where she was an All-American Track and Field athlete. Her research interests are race and ethnicity, the sociology of sport, and the contemporary African-American experience. Recent publications found in the Journal of Black Studies and the Journal of AfricanAmerican Studies, explore the intersection of race and sport while examining the experience of African-American male elite athletes. Her book entitled The Enduring Color Line in U.S. Athletics (2014) explores sports as a social construction, and more significantly, the large role race and ethnicity play in sports and consequently sports’ influence on modern race relations.

Dr. Beamon was awarded the UTA Service Learning Faculty Member of the Year in 2012 for her outstanding use of service learning as a tool for transformative learning in her Inequalities in Public Education course. Over three semesters, her students have contributed more than 1100 hours at various agencies in DFW as tutors and mentors for at risk and underserved elementary, middle, and high school students. It is one of her passions to instill civic minded thinking and action in her students as she herself is actively engaged in community service. Additionally, she was nominated for the University of Texas system wide Regents Outstanding Teaching Award in 2013. She remains actively engaged in the sporting world as a runner, triathlete, and fitness instructor, but mostly as the biggest sports fan of her son and daughter.

Named by GQ magazine as the First Gentleman of Hip Hop, Fonzworth Bentley, born Derek Watkins, is an artist and pop culture style icon. As producer and host of the international hit MTV show, From Gs to Gents, and author of New York Times best-selling Self Help book Advance Your Swagger How to use Manners, Confidence and Style to Get Ahead, Fonzworth Bentley has achieved worldwide acclaim. By age 2, this Atlanta native, was studying the Suzuki method in violin and became the concertmaster at his performing arts high school before going on to major in Biology at Morehouse College. After working in the Genetics lab following graduation, he was recruited to New York by Ralph Lauren and began pursuing his entertainment dream. He caught the attention of top luminaries and began learning Founder, Fonzworth Bentley alongside Russell Simmons, Sean Combs, and Andre Harrell. After Leadership Institute Kanye West called desiring to produce music for him, Bentley began CoolOutrageousLoversOfUniquelyRawStyle (C.O.L.O.U.R.S.), which was Author and Artist released online too much praise. His debut live performance was at Radio City Music Hall for CBS Fashion Rocks and he has since headlined on the BET College Tour and performed on Celebration of Gospel. Bentley has acted in the films Honey and Fat Albert, and has been a guest on talk shows Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan O’Brien, Wendy Williams, Chelsea Handler, The Today Show and The Late Show with David Letterman. Bentley also served as a surrogate for President Barack Obama during the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. Bentley is the spokesperson and headliner for the Empower Me Tour and currently the host of BET’s Lift Every Voice. Bentley will be featured in upcoming sequel Think Like a Man Too and is credited with arranging multiple songs on Kanye West critically acclaimed Yeezus album. He is a mainstay on the speaking circuit at churches, high schools, colleges, and universities and created a curriculum piloted at Spelman College and Mississippi Valley State College, The Competitive Advantage, giving students necessary tools to empower them to stand out in today's global economy. This artist, author, actor, producer and entrepreneur, will continue to shape the world with his mission to educate and entertain others through Kingdom inspired projects in film, television and stage.

Molefi Kete Asante, MA, Ph.D., is Professor of African American Studies at Temple University where he teaches Afrocentric theories and research and African American institution and movements. Asante created the first doctoral program in African American Studies at Temple University in 1987. An award-winning teacher and writer, Asante has lectured on five continents and has held research and visiting positions in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, China, and South Africa.

He currently holds two Honorary Professorships, one at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, & the other, Professor Extraordinarius, at the University of South Africa, Tshwane. Molefi Kete Asante is the author or editor of ninety-five (95) books, among them An Afrocentric Manifesto (2007), which won the Cheikh Anta Diop Award, Erasing Racism (2009) cited by Text and Academic Books, The Afrocentric Idea. (1998) which received the Diop Award for Best Book.

His most recent published books include The History of Africa, As I run Toward Africa, Maulana Karenga: An Intellectual Portrait, The African America People: A Global History, and Rooming in the Master’s House. His more than 400 articles and essays have appeared in numerous national and international journals and his works have been translated into French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, and Mandarin. Asante is co-editor with Ama Mazama of the Encyclopedia of African Religion and the Encyclopedia of Black Studies. He co-edited with Maulana Karenga, The Handbook of Black Studies. He also co-edits the Journal of Black Studies.

Dr. Pamela Hill is a life student and professor of Black Studies. Dr. Hill is also a student development practitioner and has worked in higher education for over twenty years. Since 2008 she has taught Black Studies courses, including Introduction to Black Studies, Black Families, and Black Women in Society, in the Dallas County Community College District, Mountain View College, and Cedar Valley College. Dr. Hill also teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington, where a minor in African American Studies was recently created through the newly formed Center for African American Studies. Dr. Hill received her BA in Broadcast Journalism from Langston University in Oklahoma, MS in College Teaching/Student Personnel Services from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma, and a doctorate in Higher and Adult Education with emphasis in Student Development and minor in Black Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has served as a Director with the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education and as a Board Member of the Association of Black Cultural Centers. Dr. Hill is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. ……

Baba Kwasi is the co-founder of the Ayubu Kamau Kings and Queens, founded in 1996. The company provides cultural enrichment programing focused on character building and cultural awareness through education and preservation of universal principles found in African centered arts, history and legacy of the Diaspora of African culture and its contribution to world cultures. Baba Kwasi leads by example through teaching, consulting, performing and providing motivational lectures and storytelling dealing with history, heritage, culture, life skills and the science of communication through music, language, body language, sounds and vibrations. Communication with the drum was extended to the pursuit of a masters degree in Computer Science and Project Management. Baba Kwasi serves as a folklorist with the Northeast Texas Library System and as an arts partner with Bigthought Thriving Minds, board member of the DFW International Community Alliance and the DFW International African Leadership Council. Baba also conducts public speaking, diversity, world day and cultural enrichment programs for corporations, churches, organizations and schools throughout the city, state and country.

Dr. Ifeoma Amah is an Assistant Professor in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. She received a B.A. in Psychology with a Minor in Education at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2002. She also received her Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Urban Schooling, again , at the University of California, Los Angeles. As an educator, her areas of specialization include academic achievement, African American education, college success, critical race theory, diverse learning in schools and non-school contexts, P-16 educational policy, qualitative research methods, and urban education. Dr. Amah is a CAAS Faculty Fellow.

Holding two graduate degrees (Masters in both Education and Theology) and working toward the PhD (ABD), focusing in Public Policy and Social Change with an emphasis in Martin Luther King Studies, Ray Jordan has worked in both the public and private sectors as a public school teacher, college professor, clergy person, journalist, non-profit administrator and consultant. Currently Ray serves as adjunct professor at UT Arlington School of Urban and Public Affairs. He is also a consultant to Southern Methodist University (his alma mater) where for 7 years he has lead SMU's annual Civil Rights Pilgrimage. Ray continues to engage all communities through a variety of volunteer experiences and community service. This service has included the board of GLSEN-Dallas, as well as the North Texas Executive Leadership Council for the United Negro College Fund. However, his greatest achievement remains his three children: Trey, 14, Alley, 13 and Joshua Caleb, 9. Professor Jordan is a CAAS Adjunct Faculty Member.

Dr. Small joined UTA in the fall of 2011. He received his graduate degree in Social Work at Columbia University in New York and a Ph.D. at the University of Houston. Additionally, Dr. Small was a National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) post-doctoral fellow. His research interests are on reducing incidents of sexually transmitted infections among vulnerable populations. Dr. Small's recent work has focused on addressing the intersection of gender, violence and HIV, HIV disclosures and prevalence, and the impact of cultural inequality and HIV/AIDS among women in sub-Sahara Africa. He currently works in projects that address immigrant and refugee issues; particularly issues related to the mental health of newly arrived refugees who often experience serious mental health symptoms due to past trauma. In addition to his academic scholarship, Dr. Small is also the founder and Executive Director of the Collective for Orphan Care Education (COCE). COCE leverages local resources to improve the health, education and wellbeing of vulnerable youth living in rural western Kenya. Dr. Small is a CAAS Affiliate Faculty Member. ……………

Dorothea is a graduate student at the University of Texas at Arlington and will earn two Master Degrees in Social Work and Public Administration in May 2014. She wrote a Masters’ thesis titled, Stressors and Social Support Among African American Grandparents Raising Grandchildren which serves as an initiative for an upcoming support program for grandparent caregivers in South Dallas County, TX. In addition to being a full time student and intern, she currently serves as a Consultant to Lancaster Outreach Center and a Board Member for Divinely Purposed nonprofit organization. As a passionate educator, she will extend her research and teaching endeavors by pursuing a Ph.D. Dorothea is a proud wife to Joe Ivey for 18 years and mother of two children, Kenya, 15 and Joe III, 13. Mrs. Ivey is CAAS Graduate Intern.

Froswa' Booker-Drew has an extensive background in nonprofit management, partnership development, training and education. She is currently National Community Engagement Director for World Vision, serving as a catalyst, partnership broker, and builder of the capacity of local partners, facilitating the emergence and strengthening of community-led initiatives to improve and sustain the well-being of children and their families. Froswa' is in her dissertation phase as a PhD candidate at Antioch University in Leadership and Change with a focus on relational leadership and social capital. She is the author of the book, Rules of Engagement: Making Connections Last. The workbook helps women build identity and psychological capital that can result in stronger social capital. She is collaborating on the upcoming book as a coauthor, Women's leadership: A contemporary and collective approach for the 21st century.

Rockell is the Executive Director and Co-Producer of the Contradictions of Fair Hope. He currently serves as the Vice President and Chief Counsel at Amerprise Financial, Inc., where he concentrates on broker- dealer, marketing and banking law, Mr. Metcalf received his LL.M from Columbia Law School and his J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law, where he was Executive Editor of the Law Review. Mr. Metcalf served as federal clerk to Chief Judge U.W. Clemons in the Northern District of Alabama. He received his B.A., with distinction, from Talladega College. He is co-author of the "Practical Guide to Broker-Dealer Regulation", and he obtained a 2008 U.S. Patent for a "System and Method for Dividing a Remittance and Distributing a Portion of the Funds to Multiple Investment Products." Mr. Metcalf serves on the boards of Bird, Bonnette & Stauderman Worldwide, Inc. and Complexions Contemporary Ballet.

Ya’Ke Smith, known for his unflinching and veracious style of storytelling, is a rising voice in independent cinema. His films have received world-wide acclaim, screening and winning awards at over 80 film festivals. His films have also screened on HBO, Showtime, BET and PBS. He is the recipient of a Director’s Guild of America Student Film Award, a regional Student Academy Award and an HBO Short Film Award. His short, Katrina’s Son, screened at over 40-film festivals and won 14 awards. The film was also eligible for the 2012 Academy Award in short filmmaking. His debut feature, WOLF, which NPR called "an impressive piece by a young director," has screened at festivals across North America and has won several awards. Ya’Ke graduated with his B.A. from the Communication Arts Department at the University of The Incarnate Word and his M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin’s film program. He is currently a film professor in the Art Department of the University of Texas at Arlington. ……………

Devan Allen has spent seven years studying, experiencing and building a successful career in the elusive field of politics. She works with some of the most dynamic political minds and civic giants of our current time. Known for her diplomacy and keen ability to get to the root of complex problems and resolve them; her goal oriented approach to creating wins for the community has afforded her a wide range of relationships and involvement in successful and sustaining projects. Devan has served on several boards and commissions and with a host of non- profit organizations, but is most happy when sharing her message, “A Stone of Hope”, to youth and young adults. She is an alumnus of the University of Colorado at Denver and the University of Texas at Arlington. She resides in Arlington with her husband Mark Allen, and their Neapolitan Mastiff, O’Neal. Though she maintains a productive schedule, Devan can always be contacted and endeavors to meet the needs of her community with every resource available.

The CAAS Emerging Scholars Mission is to develop and provide educational, cultural, and social models of support that strengthen the foundation of exploration and learning for UT Arlington first year male and female students interested in Black studies and/or volunteering in the Black community. Our purpose is to create a formal framework for supporting students by implementing meaningful academic and life-enhancing programs and activities. Program Dimensions: Programming for the CAAS Emerging Scholars Program will encompass the following dimensions:

   

Academic and Professional Development Civic Engagement and Global Awareness Personal Enrichment and Growth Mentoring and Social Relationships

Program Goals: The CAAS Emerging Scholars Program aims to accomplish the following for the student participants:

 

Develop foundational support to assist in persistence from 1st to 2nd year at UT Arlington.

  

Enhance and expand enrichment opportunities regarding leadership in all spheres.

Coordinate services with new and existing campus and community efforts that provide a foundation for academic excellence. Develop community engagement activities that promote civic responsibility and personal enrichment.

Create healthy mentoring/social relationships between Black faculty/staff/alumni and students outside of the classroom.

Increase knowledge of societal, cultural, psychological, spiritual, economic, and historic challenges of Black students both inside and outside of the classroom.

Provide financial support for first year full-time students.

Program Structure/Activities: CAAS focuses on its program dimensions and meets objectives through the following:

The CAAS Emerging Leaders Mission is to develop and provide educational, cultural, and social models of support that strengthen the foundation of learning and leadership for UT Arlington upperclassmen. The Emerging Leaders Initiative (ELI) allows students the opportunity to continue to build on their own leadership skills through unique opportunities with CAAS, while also interacting with CAAS Emerging Scholars and other students. ELI participants are sophomore, junior, and senior level students that have shown exemplary campus and community leadership, communication skills, and a commitment to address social problems in the Black community. Our purpose is to create a formal framework for supporting students by implementing meaningful academic and life-enhancing programs and activities. Program Dimensions: Programming for the CAAS Emerging Leaders Initiative will encompass the following dimensions:
