EMPLOYMENT/ EDUCATION SURVEY OF RECENT USU GRADUATES EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During May and June, 2006, USU’s Office of Analysis, Assessment, and Accreditation worked with academic departments in conducting a telephone survey of employment and graduate study by recent recipients of USU degrees. Each department was given a list of students who received bachelor’s degrees from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005. Telephone numbers and other contact information were also provided to assist the departments in locating their students. To facilitate uniformity in the data generated, a survey instrument was developed that specified dialogue to be used and the manner of recording responses. To make the task manageable, departments who awarded more than 50 degrees during the period were asked to survey a random sample of at least 50 students, while smaller departments were expected to contact as many of their students as possible. The response rate for a telephone survey was extremely high. A total of 1,612 alumni provided the requested information, which represents 84% of the individuals who were selected to be surveyed and over 50% of all those who received degrees during the period. Because of the sampling procedure used, college and university totals are based on weighted averages of departmental data. Among the important findings of the study are the following: • • • • • • • • •

About 30% of recent USU graduates are continuing their education as a full- or part-time student and 25% are enrolled in graduate degree programs. 69% of those continuing their educations are in masters programs and about 10% are in professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, and law. About 40% of the students in graduate degree programs are enrolled at USU. Business is the most popular field of study for those in graduate degree programs. About 14% of alumni who are not full-time students do not have a full- or parttime job, but many of these individuals are not seeking employment. The unemployment rate of recent alumni looking for jobs is estimated at 2.5%, which is slightly below the nationwide rate of 3.0% for college graduates. Of those with full-time jobs, about 20% indicated that their job is unrelated to their USU degree. Nearly two-thirds of those with full-time jobs are working in Utah. About 60% of those with full-time jobs are working in the private sector and 20% are employed in public or private education. Fifty-one percent of respondents with full-time jobs provided salary information and department median starting salaries range from $21,711 to $51,672

For many of the questions, there is substantial variation in the responses between colleges and between the departments in a college. College and departmental breakdowns are provided in Appendix C of this report.

Legislators, regents, and especially accreditation bodies are focusing more and more on assessment of university activities. Institutions are expected to be accountable for the resources they are provided and the students they have been entrusted to educate. One imperfect, but highly visible assessment measure is the experience of students after they have finished their studies. Questions to be answered include the following: What proportion of students go on to graduate school and where? Are recent alumni able to find employment and are their jobs related to their educational preparation? What proportion of students find jobs in Utah? What are starting salaries for the new graduates? These are important questions that a university should be able to answer. This document reports the findings of a survey that focused on these and related issues. SURVEY METHODOLOGY To assure uniformity in the questions posed to graduates, a standardized telephone survey instrument was used by all academic departments as they contacted their recent graduates. This instrument provided specific dialogue to be used and a logical structure for the questions asked. In addition to categorical questions (such as whether or not the person is employed or going to graduate school), it also requested descriptive information, such as what school is being attended, what subject is being studied, and who is the person’s employer. When completed, the survey instrument was designed so that it could be scanned and, after verification, the data inputted for analysis. A copy of the telephone questionnaire, showing the dialogue, is included as Appendix A. Recent graduates are highly mobile and it can be very difficult to locate them. A concerted effort was made to collect as much contact information as possible. The starting point was to obtain all of the information available on the recent graduates from the Alumni Association’s database. This included the Association’s most recent

information on street and email addresses, telephone numbers, and employers. The advantage of starting with Alumni Association data is that the unit’s mission is to maintain contact with former graduates, so the information should be current. The alumni data were supplemented by using USU’s BANNER Information System to obtain all the other contact information maintained by the university. In most cases this included several other addresses and telephone numbers, such as those for next-of-kin. All of this information was provided to the departments to assist them in making contact with their recent graduates. SAMPLE SELECTION The survey focused on students who received a bachelor’s degree from USU between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005. More than three thousand students received bachelor’s degrees over this twelve month period. The reason for the time lag between graduation and survey was to assure that students would have had a reasonable amount of time to find employment or to establish themselves in a graduate program. The amount of effort needed to conduct the surveys varied greatly among departments. Secondary Education had only five graduates (because prospective teachers obtain their degrees through another department, such as history or biology), while the department of Business Administration had 281. To make the task more manageable, those departments with more than 50 graduates were asked to complete survey forms for a random sample of at least 50 of their students. Those units with less than 50 graduates were asked to survey as many of their students as possible. In reporting aggregated results for individual colleges and for the university, the responses were weighted to reflect this sampling approach. COMPLETION RATES Survey information was distributed to departments in April, 2006 and completed forms were to be returned by early June. A review of the data indicated that the intended survey approach had been followed in the vast majority of cases. The number of bachelor’s degree recipients, the number of completed surveys, and the completion rates for each department are shown below. For departments with 50 or more degree recipients, the percent is based on the goal of 50 completed surveys that was established for the departments. Note that some of these departments completed more than 50 surveys because they wanted more complete information about their graduates. For example, Accounting collected information on 110 of its 129 graduates— 220% of the goal of 50 students. (For an explanation of the abbreviations used below, see Appendix B.)

The percentage of completed surveys was quite high. Of 23 departments with 50 or more degree recipients, 18 returned at least 90% of their goal of 50 forms. The mean completion rate for the 18 departments with less than 50 degree recipients was 70%. Because the large departments were only asked to contact 50 students, the target number of completed surveys for this project was 1,674. University-wide, the survey information was obtained for a total of 1,612 recent graduates. Adjusting for the fact that several of the large departments contacted more than 50 students (the aggregate “oversurvey” was 213 which was subtracted from the total of 1,612 ), it was determined that 84% of the targeted students were surveyed. This proportion is almost exactly the same as the percent for the previous year’s Employment/Education Survey. This is a high response rate for a telephone survey and reflects (1) a conscientious effort on the part of most departments to contact students and (2) the high level of trust and interest that recent alumni have in USU. RESULTS Selected aggregate results for the colleges and USU are presented and discussed in this section. The percentages shown for colleges are weighted averages of department data, with the weights being the proportion of total college degrees awarded by the 4


department. The USU percentages are also weighted averages, with the weights being the proportion of total USU degrees awarded by each college. For convenience, the Department of Economics, which is jointly administered by the colleges of Agriculture and Business, is included in the Business totals. Data for the individual academic departments are found in Appendix C. Sources of Information As part of the process, those conducting the survey were asked to indicate how they obtained the information reported on the form. The preferred respondent was the graduate, but she/he could not always be contacted. In some cases, surveyors may have spoken with a spouse or knowledgeable relative. In other cases, the source may have been a person in the student’s department who had maintained close contact with the recent graduate. Following is a breakdown of sources from which information was obtained. Sources of Information

More than half of the data was collected by direct telephone contact with the student. In most cases, “Other” means that a faculty or staff member in the department provided the information. “Unknown” indicates that the source of information was not recorded by the person filling out the form. Note that there are substantial variations in how the information was obtained. Some colleges were much more successful in making direct contact with their graduates than were others. Continued Education Continuing Their Education. Recent graduates were asked if they are currently continuing their schooling and, if so, whether they are full- or part-time students.

Nearly 30% of recent USU graduates are continuing their education as a full- or part-time student. There is substantial variation among the seven collegesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;more than 60% of the respondents from the College of Science are in school either full- or part-time, but the proportions in the other colleges are much less. The numbers in the table above include students in graduate degree programs as well as those getting second bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees and those in non-degree programs. Using data from the tables above and below, it was calculated that about 25% of all the survey respondents are enrolled in graduate degree programs. Degree Sought. Those graduates continuing their educations were asked to indicate the degree they are seeking. Results are as follows:

About 70% of students continuing their education are in masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programs and about 10% are pursuing professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, and law. Most of those seeking professional degrees are from the College of Science. Only about 5% of those continuing their education are in doctoral programs. Institution and Subject. Graduates continuing their educations were asked to name the school they are attending and the subject being studied. As expected, USU was the most frequently reported choice. The portion of students continuing their education who are enrolled at USU is shown below. Appendix C lists schools where at least two members of a department are attending and also provides a breakdown of subjects studied.

USU is, by far, the most frequent choice for continued study by recent graduates, with about 40% of all respondents who are enrolled in graduate study indicating they are at USU. Students from the Colleges of HASS, Natural Resources, and Science are least likely to be at USU. With USU providing a broad spectrum of undergraduate degrees to choose from, it would be expected that the choice of subject in graduate school would also be varied. For those students pursuing a masters or a doctoral degree at USU or elsewhere, the most common subjects being studied by recent graduates are as follows:

In evaluating the table on the previous page, it is important not to use the data to estimate the total number of recent graduates studying in each field because the information comes from a sample, not the entire population. However, the percentages, should be representative of the most popular subject areas being pursued by recent USU graduates. Current Employment Currently Employed. Respondents were asked whether they are currently employed and, if so, if their employment is full-time or part-time and whether their job is related to their USU degree. In analyzing these data, it is important to distinguish between those who are continuing their educations full-time and those who are not students or who are studying part-time. For all respondents, (including students) results by college are shown below. Current Employment (all respondents)

Almost one-fourth of graduates indicated they did not have a full- or part-time job; however, this proportion includes those going to school. Note that nearly 50% from the College of Science said they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a job. This may reflect the high percentage of students from that college who are continuing their education. In evaluating employment, it is probably better to focus on those recent graduates who are not full-time students. About 14% of recent graduates who are not full-time students reported that they did not have a full-time or part-time job. The rates are much lower for the graduates from Engineering and Natural Resources than those from the other colleges. The percentages in the table should not be interpreted as unemployment rates. To be counted as unemployed by the federal government, a person must be looking for a job. It is likely that some of the respondents without jobs are those rearing children or students who have taken time off after school to pursue some other type of activity. For example, several recent graduates are now serving LDS missions or are engaged with other service organizations. Survey respondents were asked if they are currently looking for a full-time or part-time job. Focusing on those who are not full-time students and who do not already have a full-time job, the portions of respondents who said that they are currently looking for employment are shown below. Note that, university-wide, more than three-fourths of those not employed and who were not students, were not seeking employment. Looking for Job

It is possible to compute an estimated unemployment rate from the data. If about 18% of the respondents without a job and who are not in school are looking for work (full- or part-time) and if about 14% of those who are not students do not have a job (as reported above), then 18% x 14% = 2.5% of the recent graduates would roughly meet the

governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s criteria for being unemployed. This rate is comparable to the nation-wide unemployment rate for college graduates, which is about 3.0%. Degree-Related Employment. A salient question is whether the jobs of the recent graduates are related to their USU degrees. Although some students may choose to work in areas outside of their discipline, as a general rule, students pick a major because they expect to work in that field. The respondents with full-time jobs were asked if their job is related or somewhat related to their USU degree. About one-fifth of the respondents said that their jobs were not related to their degree. The rate was 6% for Engineering graduates, but about 30% for HASS and Natural Resources graduates. Job Location. In evaluating the effect of state resources used for higher education, the issue of where graduates take full-time jobs is relevant. Students who remain in the State of Utah add human capital to the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work force and contribute to the tax base of the state. For those with full-time jobs, the table below shows where they were employed. Job Location

Nearly two-thirds of survey respondents with full-time jobs reported that they are working in Utah. College of Education and College of Business graduates are most likely to have remained in the state, while those from Agriculture, Engineering and Natural Resources are more likely to have located elsewhere. Type of Employer. Graduates were asked to identify their employer. As would be expected, a large number of organizations were reported and the lists varied greatly by discipline. For convenience, employers are categorized as private sector, education (public or private), and other public sector employers. For those graduates with full-time jobs, the breakdown is as follows:

Nearly sixty percent of respondents are working in the private sector. Variations among the colleges are predictable with College of Business graduates most likely to be in the private sector and Natural Resources graduates in the public sector. Starting Salary. Obtaining numbers on starting salaries for recent graduates is a difficult task. Students or their spouses are often reluctant to provide this information and relatives who may have been contacted as part of the survey may not know. It was anticipated that this part of the survey data would be less complete than other information collected and the forecast proved to be generally correct. However, a substantial proportion of the survey contacts were willing and able to provide salary data. The table below shows the percentage of respondents with full-time jobs who provided starting salary information and also the range of median salaries for the departments in each college. Appendix C provides detail on starting salaries by department.

Salary data were obtained for about half of those surveyed who had full-time jobs. The highest medians were reported in the departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and, surprisingly, Art. However, care should be used in comparing the median salaries because they represent small numbers of observations in some departments. This was the third year of using a new survey instrument designed to standardize collection of data regarding employment and continued education of recent USU graduates.
