David Kempe

Aristides Requicha

George Bekey

Bart Kosko

The Computer Science Department’s David Kempe added an Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator award to his earlier CAREER award. The ONR award has similar criteria and standing to the NSF award. Aristides Requicha, holder of the Viterbi School’s Gordon Marshall Chair, has just been named a co-recipient of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Robotics and Automation Society’s Pioneer Award. This honor recognizes “individuals who by virtue of initiating new areas of research, development or engineering have had a significant impact on development of the robotics and/or automation fields.” George Bekey, a computer science emeritus professor, has won the USC Faculty Lifetime Achievement Award. Bart Kosko of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering was named one of three recipients of an excellence award from the USC Faculty Senate. He was recognized for his exceptional

contributions to faculty governance and for his advocacy of intellectual-property rights for faculty and students. Alan Willner of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering has been named editor-in-chief of a prestigious journal, Optics Letters, published by the Optical Society of America. James E. Moore II, chair of the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, was elected vice president and presidentelect of the Transportation Science and Logistics Society. He also won the Pioneer Educator Award from the Orange County Engineering Council.

paper award from the Institute For Operations Research and Management Science’s Transportation Science and Logistics Society. He also won the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Excellence in Teaching award, and was named a fellow of the IIE.

Ramesh Govindan, outgoing chair of the Computer Science Department, and fifth-year doctoral student Nupur Kothari have won the Best Paper award at the IEEE Symposium on Information Processing in Sensor Networks.

Daniel Lidar was named a fellow of the American Physical Society, and Aristides Requicha and Viktor Prasanna were named fellows of the Association for Computing Machinery. Prasanna also received the first-ever Outstanding Service Award from the IEEE’s Computer Society Technical Committee on Parallel Processing, presented at the International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, where he also won a best paper award.

Konstantinos Psounis of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering won the “Bestand Most Compelling Presentation and Demonstration Award” at a networking workshop on the design of a future Internet held at Stanford University.

Hossein Hashemi won a best paper award at the IEEE International Solid State Circuits Symposium. Ellis Horowitz, professor of computer science and electrical engineering, has been appointed chair of the Computer Science Department for an interim period. He succeeds Ramesh Govindan, who had served as interim chair since July 2007. Horowitz was chair of the department from 1990 to 1999.

Terence G. Langdon has received the 2008 Blaise Pascal Medal for Material Science from the European Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Lee Hsun Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Maged Dessouky of the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering won a best

Professor Emeritus George V. Chilingar has been named an honorary professor of the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas in Moscow for his significant contributions in the area of oil and gas field development. Just a few months before, he had been the guest of honor at a campus celebration to honor his 55 years of teaching at USC. Chilingar received a plaque from Viterbi School Dean Yannis C. Yortsos and many kudos from colleagues and friends in the school’s civil and chemical engineering departments. Michael Safonov of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering was elected a Fellow of the International Federation of

Automatic Control (IFAC). Safonov, a leader in the field of robust control, has worked extensively with flight control systems for aircraft.

Prize in technology,” and awarded for innovation that has significantly improved the quality of life throughout the world.

Yannis C. Yortsos, the Viterbi School’s dean, earned the 2008 Western North America Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award from the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Yortsos was also recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Michael Neely, Tait S. Pottebaum and Amy Rechenmacher are the latest Viterbi faculty to win coveted National Science Foundation (NSF) Early CAREER awards. NSF CAREER awards are among the highest honors for young faculty.

Tom Katsouleas

Andrew J. Viterbi

On July 1, 2008, Tom Katsouleas, professor of electrical engineering and an innovative researcher in plasma physics, became dean of Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering. The selection of the School’s patron and namesake, Andrew J. Viterbi, as a finalist for the 2008 Millennium Prize of the Finnish Academy topped our list of recent honors for Viterbi School faculty. Viterbi, a USC presidential chair in the Viterbi School’s electrical engineering faculty, was one of four nominees for the prestigious Millennium Prize, considered the “Nobel

Michael Neely

Tait Pottebaum

Amy Rechenmacher

Neely’s grant will support his work in network modeling and analysis for the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering. Pottebaum, a member of the aerospace and mechanical engineering faculty, earned a grant for his work in fluid dynamics and the development of new microfluidic devices. Rechenmacher’s grant in civil and environmental engineering will address specific issues related to granular behavior and improving infrastructure and earthquake predictability.
