At USC Builds, putting people first isn't just part of our mission it's the driving force behind everything we do. Through our workforce development program, USC Academy, we not only enhance the technical abilities of our team, but also foster a culture of continuous learning, leadership and personal development. By equipping our workforce with the skills they need to succeed, we ensure that every individual has the tools to thrive, contributing to both their personal success and the collective success of the communities we serve.

NEW-HIRE TOOL KITS

We believe in empowering our employees from day one, which is why every new field crew hire is equipped with a personalized tool kit both a literal and symbolic gesture of our commitment to their growth. Launched in 2024, our initiative reflects our unwavering belief that people are our greatest asset and that investing in their development fuels our collective success. More than just practical resources, these tool kits represent the start of a journey where talent is nurtured, skills are sharpened and every individual is given the opportunity to thrive in the skilled trades. This year, we distributed 41 tool kits to support 33 new hires and several late 2023 additions to our team.

EXCELLENCE & EMPOWERMENT SERIES

Our Excellence & Empowerment Series is an 18-month training program dedicated to nurturing our emerging leaders, who are nominated by their peers. This comprehensive curriculum

provides essential skills in conflict resolution, practical application and project management, aligning with our core values of Unity, Social impact and Craftsmanship.

Our current cohort of seven individuals is being equipped with the skills needed to make a lasting impact within our organization. This investment in their growth reflects our unwavering commitment to empowering our people, knowing that by doing so, we strengthen the communities we serve. Together, we’re building a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and we’re excited to continue this journey of shared learning and collaboration.

OTHER USC ACADEMY TRAINING PROVIDED

At USC Academy, our diverse classes, including financial literacy and a first-time homebuyers program, empower employees with valuable knowledge that can transform their lives. Many participants have confidently managed their finances, purchased their first vehicles and homes, and have begun building generational wealth for their families. Our programs also enhance personal development, helping individuals improve their confidence and communication skills both in and out of the workplace. We’re honored to support our team's growth and remain committed to creating lasting opportunities that inspire meaningful change in their lives and the communities we serve.

USC Builds sponsored the event in support of the legion’s mission to raise awareness of veteran suicide and funds to provide service dogs to heroes in need.

ST. PETER’S KITCHEN

USC Builds provided a monthly rotation of employee volunteers from June through December, helping serve 3,648 meals to lunch program participants.

PAYCHEX JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT DISCOVERY CENTER

We're excited to have partnered with Junior Achievement of Central Upstate NY and LeChase Construction on the creation of the Paychex JA Discovery Center. The center introduces students to in-demand careers, including the skilled trades aligning with our commitment to support future generations. MARKETPLACE SENIOR APARTMENTS

Located in Henrietta, Marketplace Senior Apartments features 150 supportive housing units, empowering seniors 55+ to age in place with dignity. Residents have access to community space and numerous amenities, such as a fitness center, storage, laundry facilities, outdoor patio, lounges and sitting areas. By investing in these resources, we create a more resilient community where seniors can stay connected, engaged and valued strengthening our social fabric and promoting a higher quality of life for all residents.

TEEN EMPOWERMENT

We are so proud to have partnered with Christa Construction on Teen Empowerment’s new building, which provides offices and meeting spaces for current and additional staff, as well as areas to accommodate youth events for up to 150 people. This community hub features a music recording studio, meditation room, library and conference room, along with a balcony and outdoor space. These additions will enable more creative programming and foster greater collaboration.

GREENTOPIA

Greentopia is a Rochester-based nonprofit dedicated to creating and maintaining urban green spaces that inspire positive change. Their new headquarters, a recently renovated house, will serve as the hub for their work fostering social, economic and environmental equity. Through partnerships, volunteers and donors, they empower the community to build a more sustainable and vibrant future.

HOUSE OF ALPHA [IN PROGRESS]

Our team was tapped to transform an 11,000-SF, 15-bedroom historic structure into a permanent residence and program house for current and future leaders of the founding chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, the nation’s first Black intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity. Once complete, the nearly 100-year-old restored facility will become the location of the Alpha Light Fund Institute, a cultural destination site for support, rejuvenation, growth and development. The Institute’s programs and services are designed to strengthen and reimagine social impact to create a more just and equitable society.

Marcus joined USC Builds in 2017 as a drywall finisher, bringing with him a commitment to craftsmanship and community impact. His natural leadership qualities, honed while serving in the U.S. Army, helped advance him to a foreman role, where he broadened his skills and expanded his influence as part of USC Builds’ Culture Club. In November, he was promoted to field manager and appointed to the executive leadership team, reflecting his hard work and USC Builds’ dedication to liberating the promise of its employees. Marcus’ achievements have been shaped by his growth mindset and USC Academy, beginning with his 2021 graduation from the Leadership in Training program, where his peers voted him “Most Likely to Be a Superhero” a testament to his unwavering positivity and ability to inspire those around him. Through these experiences, Marcus learned the importance of confidence, clear communication and setting short- and long-term goals skills that define his leadership style. He further strengthened his capabilities by completing the LeaderBuild Institute’s six-month Emerging Leadership program in 2022 and USC Academy’s 18-month Excellence & Empowerment series in 2023 As a USC Academy trainer, Marcus pays his success forward by helping shape the next generation of construction leaders. Now, as field manager, Marcus leads field operations with skill and integrity prioritizing efficiency, quality and an environment of trust and teamwork. His ability to connect with both clients and colleagues is indispensable to USC Builds’ mission ensuring each project upholds our standards of excellence and community impact.

RAUL

Foreman

Raul began his journey with USC Builds in 2022 as a painter and eagerly expanded his skills by taking on various roles, including drywall finisher, framer, site coordinator, forklift operator and lull operator. His commitment to growth, DEIB principles and teamwork has driven his success and enabled him to excel in every challenge. Raul’s dedication is evident through his completion of USC Academy’s 18month Excellence & Empowerment series in 2023 and Leaders in Training program this year, as well as his OSHA 10-hour and CPR certifications through Builders Exchange of Rochester. Additionally, Raul is a key USC Builds’ Culture Club ambassador and Spanish translator, lending his voice to help foster a collaborative and equitable work environment. His passion for learning about the world of construction and genuine concern for others gives him a unique understanding of how each individual and each trade comes together to successfully transform a project into a finished product. Raul’s intuition, combined with his inclusive leadership style and deep appreciation of the skilled trades, recently earned him a promotion to foreman. In his new role, Raul continues to inspire our team by leading with integrity, driving unity and positioning our team to deliver exceptional results on every project we touch.

Demetries joined USC Builds in 2022 as a site coordinator, quickly showcasing his versatility through roles in drywall finishing, insulation, carpentry and demolition. His strong problemsolving skills, clear communication and discernment established him as a trusted backup for our foremen—revealing his readiness for greater responsibility. In March of this year, Demetries was tapped to enroll in USC Builds’ 18-month Excellence & Empowerment series to enhance his professional development and leadership capabilities. By August, he earned certification to operate Aeroseal’s AeroBarrier technology, enabling him to manage computer-controlled equipment, master the air sealing process and effectively seal structures to meet rigorous energy-efficiency standards and building codes. As a dedicated member of USC Builds’ Culture Club, Demetries fosters a positive work environment and serves as an ambassador for our site coordinator crew, ensuring their ideas are voiced and valued. Recently promoted to technology specialist, Demetries brings a fresh perspective to our team leveraging his techsavviness to drive innovation, efficiency and engagement. Reflecting on his journey from a quiet newcomer to a confident leader, Demetries treasures the meaningful connections he’s built and the opportunities he’s embraced, all of which fuel his passion for community, collaboration and empowering the next generation.
