What Date is Optimum?
Four cultivars ‘Athena,’ ‘Baldur,’ ‘Amanda’ and ‘Salut’. Sites: Moscow and Lewiston ID, Pendleton OR, and Kalispell MT. Planting dates: June 15, July 15 and August 15. Seeding rate: 6 lb per acre. Soil moisture recorded at each planting date and in October. Second trial in 2013 and 2014 had three seeding rates.

Recommendations for Growers Chose an adapted variety. Plant into moisture. Plant as late as practical.
Monitor soil moisture in fallow. Check weather forecasts. Balance work load. Don’t plant too late (300 GGD).
Control insects.
Use a seed treatment. Monitor and spray if needed. Don’t panic. Buy crop insurance.
