This is USC Aiken
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview Coming off the best season in school history, head coach Ike Ofoje has the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s soccer team primed and ready to make a run in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Despite losing leading scorer Noel Mais to graduation and a pair of outstanding goalkeepers, the Pacers have an abundance of talent returning to the fold in 2015. Additionally, USC Aiken returns added talent that missed the 2014 campaign and a wealth of incoming talent, which will serve the squad well while it battles for a Peach Belt Conference Championship and a second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament. USC Aiken has 15 matches during the regular season, including seven home dates. The squad opens the season with a pair of contests in Morrow, Ga., against Anderson (Sept. 3) and Erskine (Sept. 5). The team begins its home slate on Wednesday, Sept. 9, against Lenoir-Rhyne.
FORWARD Ofoje has to replace one of the top producers in the league and in school history in Mais, but returns a solid core of strikers. Sajih Daychoum, Jarrel Smalls and Donavan Smith will all carry the load for the Pacers and each has proven that he can find the back of the net. However, Ofoje has options as several of the midfielders could find themselves in position to not only assist on plays, but have goal scoring opportunities. Each saw valuable playing time and have a wealth of starting experience. The midfielders are led by senior Dean Smith, who ahs started every contest during his illustrious career. Blezin and Locher are the only other seniors in the group while the rest of the talented squad has at least one more year. Misiri was the PBC Freshman of the Year while Simmond picked up all-conference accolades.

USC Aiken has one of the deepest and most experienced back lines in the region. This year, Ofoje gets to add redshirt-senior Edmund Eastick back into the mix after he missed all of 2014 with an injury. All-conference performer Sandre Duncan returns as well as talented studentathletes Ryan Dwyer and Rodrigo Goncalves, who each played significant roles during the 2014 campaign.
After losing Brandon Jarosz and Joshua Poissant to graduation, Ofoje had to reload between the pipes. Despite a big challenge that awaits any of the potential studentathletes to fill the void, all should be up for the task.
Also returning to the mix is redshirt-junior Daane Mallek and fellow junior Chris Perez. Mallek saw time in 10 matches last season, earning a pair of starts. Perez played in 17 contests, garnering eight starts during the banner season a year ago.
Ofoje has four student-athletes vying for the coveted starting spot, but only one has collegiate experience. Chase Boulton is a transfer from Phoenix College and is a junior. Andre Bernardini and Alessandro Gentile are all over 6-0 and could be a force in goal. Returning to the mix is Miles Maynard, who redshirted a season ago. However, Ofoje believes that his offense can possess the ball and the back line can do a solid job with allowing the keepers time to adjust to the PBC.

The Archives 2014 Season Review It was a season to remember for the USC Aiken men’s soccer team. The 2014 season is one that will be discussed for years to come and will be pointed to as the year that everything changed under the direction of head coach Ike Ofoje and for his program.
found a way to push through and record a 3-1 home win over Queens. Trailing 1-0 just 5:35 into the match, Noel Mais rattled off a pair of goals and Misiri notched his third goal of the season with an insurance goal late in the contest.
The Pacers concluded the 2014 season with a 14-6-1 record. It not only marked the most wins in the program’s history, but 2014 was the first time in school history that the squad reached the NCAA Tournament.
The victory kept the momentum going as the Pacers went on the road and earned a hard-fought 3-2 win at Pfeiffer before shutting out Belmont Abbey. Against the Falcons, Andre Simmond showcased his skills of finding open teammates as he totaled a pair of assists with rookie Brett Smith notching the game-winners. Rodrigo Goncalves and Simmond netted scores in the road win against the Crusaders on Sept. 19. The win set up a match against what turned out to be the league’s top two programs.
After opening the season with a neutral-site loss, USC Aiken got things going despite having an extremely young squad. The team reeled off back-to-back wins and went unbeaten in six straight contests. The Pacers earned their first victory of the year with a shutout of King in another neutral-site match that took place in Morrow, Ga. During the win, Jordan Misiri and Nathan Shanko each earned goals, with Misiri notching the match-winner. The scores were just a preview of things to come for Ofoje’s team. In a tough road match on Sept. 10, the Pacers upended Lenoir-Rhyne by a 2-1 count. Shanko scored the gamewinning goal off a pass from Dean Smith in the 80th minute of work. Despite the momentum the team had, having to play in a rain-soaked match against Mount Olive on Sept. 13 proved difficult. In swirling winds and driving rain, the teams battled to a 1-1 draw. Due to lightning, the squads agreed not to play overtime. With the weather still bad on Monday, Sept. 15, USC Aiken

USC Aiken was primed for the match at Young Harris as the squads battled to a 3-2 contest in Aiken in 2013, but YHC managed to register a 5-0 victory. Ofoje’s team, however, did not get down on itself. The squad found a way to play together and win its next five matches. Against Lander on Oct. 1, USC Aiken upended the Bearcats for the first time in eight seasons thanks in part to Misiri and Mais. Ryan Dwyer tied the match at 2-2 and Mais took a pass from Gabriel Locher for the game-winner in the 67th minute. The outstanding defense of the Pacers did not allow Lander to get the equalizer in the 3-2 win. USC Aiken hit the road for a pair of tough matches at Georgia Southwestern and at Flagler. After dispatching Georgia Southwestern 2-0, the Pacers had to put together
a pair of second-half goals for the win against the Saints. Mais tied the match at the 52:27 mark and Sandre Duncan netted his first score, which was the game-winner, at the 53:59 mark. Ofoje’s team stepped out of conference and downed a physical Coker squad 3-2 before returning to league play. Against Montevallo, the Pacers scored early and often in the 3-0 win. Mais took a pass from Jan Wester for the game-winner just 22 seconds into action. Wester netted the team’s second goal off a pass from Simmond at the 5:02 mark and Simmond completed the scoring in the 36th minute. After an overtime loss to Francis Marion, USC Aiken closed out the regular season by winning two of its final three matches. The Pacers earned a road win at Clayton State and defeated UNC Pembroke 1-0. Ofoje’s team lost its regular-season finale at North Georgia and the team had to square off against the Braves in the first round of the PBC Tournament. As the No. 2 seed, the Pacers hosted UNC Pembroke and overcame an early deficit for a 2-1 win. Simmond notched both goals for the Pacers – and both came in the first half. USC Aiken scored first against the Patriots in the league semifinals, but the designated visitors tied the match at 1-1. After a solid halftime discussion by Ofoje, Wester scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute. Five minutes later, Simmond connected with Misiri for an insurance goal
that sent the Pacers to the PBC Championship match for the second time in three seasons. Ofoje’s team pushed top-seeded Young Harris to overtime before falling. However, USC Aiken was one of just two teams that pushed the team to overtime. The solid body of work allowed the Pacers to earn an NCAA Tournament berth as the squad headed to Young Harris for the first round. USC Aiken squared off against Pfeiffer but was unable to come out on top. Due to their accomplishments, the Pacers garnered a wealth of accolades. Misiri was named PBC Freshman of the Year while Ofoje picked up Coach of the Year honors. Duncan, Mais and Misiri were named to first-team PBC while Simmond and Joshua Poissant garnered second-team honors. During the regular season, Poissant was named PBC Goalkeeper of the Week while Shanko and Mais were tabbed PBC Players of the Week. Duncan earned PBC Defensive Player of the Week as well. From tough seasons to playing in two PBC Championship matches and one NCAA Tournament match, the graduating seniors were definitely a huge part of building the program. With an abundance of talent returning and a solid influx of student-athletes, Ofoje will have his team looking for its second straight NCAA Tournament berth.
