Travel season calls for AT awareness By U.S. Army Europe Antiterrorism Division
W
ith the school year over, and summer break and the moving season getting into high gear, now is the time to remember to practice heightened anti-terrorism awareness as we travel. Many service members, civilians, contractors and family members will be traveling across Europe and around the world over the next two months. Any travel comes with potential danger, let alone travel involving foreign countries, especially during a time of heightened tensions and conflicts around the globe. The U.S. Army Europe Antiterrorism Division reminds members of the U.S. forces community that those risks include terrorist attacks. We must all be vigilant and use sound, risk-based decision

509th Signal adds no-alcohol incident streamer Story and photo by Laura Kreider USAG Vicenza PAO
T
he 509th Signal Battalion has been was awarded the No Alcohol Related Incidents for Three Year Streamer. Soldiers and civilians convened at the Del Din multipurpose facility June 6 for a ceremony to mark the streamer presentation to the 509th. “Three years without an alcohol related incident is the result of the discipline and professionalism of the Soldiers and civilians within our ranks,” said Capt. Nicholas Pantin, Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 509th Sig. Bn.
Discipline on and off duty “This achievement shows the discipline both on and off duty, and I am proud to be a part of this unit’s achievement. We are currently at 36 plus months without an alcohol related incident. I have never heard of this type of accomplishment anywhere else,” he said. Detachment sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class Damien Cunningham, said he was proud of the battalion’s accomplishment. “The current Army fiscal year has a focus on trust, honorable service and stewardship, all of which the Soldiers of 509th exhibit through their work days and the hours of rest and relaxation. Our Soldiers have done an exceptional job of listening to weekend and holiday safety briefs while taking responsibility for their actions and the actions of their battle buddies during travels within Italy and the members that venture outside of our locale. “We have outstanding leaders, sergeants and Soldiers and the drive to improve our current no alcohol related incident record is on everyone’s radar,” Cunningham said.

Summer heat safety By USAG Vicenza Safety Office
E
very summer many parts of the world, including Italy, experience periods of seriously hot weather. Working in the summer heat presents specific hazards, from cramping to heat stroke. Make sure you know how to avoid heat illness at work and off the job. All USAG Vicenza Soldiers, civilians and dependents should know the warning signs of potential injury and be familiar with the preventive steps to preserve their well-being listed here. Watch out for ~ Heat cramps: Heat cramps can affect several groups of muscles such as those in the arms, legs and abdomen —muscles that have been put under stress while working. Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is a serious medical condition requiring immediate attention. It may have any or all of these symptoms: a feeling of exhaustion, nausea, dizziness, pale and clammy skin, a quick pulse and low blood pressure. Heat stroke: Heat stroke is a serious matter and if untreated can be fatal. It occurs when the body’s heat control mechanism simply shuts down. Perspiration stops and body temperature rises. How to stay safe during the summer ~ Stay hydrated: People often wait until they are thirsty to drink water, but if you are doing physically demanding work and become dehydrated, you can’t catch up and are at risk for potentially fatal heat illness. Employees need to drink water (and be encouraged to drink water) continuously on hot days, and managers and supervisors must ensure that it is readily available. Take a break: Take frequent rest breaks when working in hot conditions. Suit up for the heat: Acclimate to working in hot conditions. Be sure to wear a hat and dress in lightcolored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Listen to the doctor: Don’t stop taking medication unless your doctor says you should. Take extra care to stay cool and ask your doctor or pharmacist for any special heat advice. Ventilate: Ensure that indoor areas are kept well ventilated and that fans or air conditioners are operating. Keep an eye out for your colleagues: Watch each other for signs of heat illness. Mild cases can be treated by moving the person to a cool area and supplying water to drink. Remember, heat stroke is a life-threatening condition that calls for an immediate medical response.

POV inspection adds hours, personnel By USAG Vicenza PAO The Vehicle Inspection Point on Caserma Ederle has increased personnel and expanded operating hours to try to meet the increased demand created by the summer PCS surge. To increase customer service, the Logistics Readiness Center Vicenza will begin vehicle inspections at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, continuing service until 5 p.m. A staff increase also makes it possible to continue processing vehicles during the lunch hour as well. The LRC is also contemplating opening the VIP for service on Saturdays and Sundays later this month or in early July. Demand remains high and there are a limited number of bays/pits suitable to meet mandatory Italian safety inspection criteria. Vehicle owners are highly encouraged NOT to wait until the final days of their registration to come for the renewal inspection: you may not make it through. Waiting to the last minute also runs the risk of personnel losing their fuel coupon privileges since a new registration cannot be registered without passing the inspection first. Keep in mind that owners of vehicles less than 4 years old are not required to have their vehicle inspected for renewal; however, vehicles being sold must pass inspection before transferring ownership. Finally, vehicle inspection customers are reminded to bring their current valid registration, SETAF driver license and proof of insurance to the VIP. License plates must be properly fastened and not bent, and safety vest, first aid kit and warning triangle must be clearly in view in the vehicle. Owners must also ensure that no installation access stickers from previous posts or other decals that readily identify the vehicle as belonging to a member of the military are affixed. Being prepared and not waiting to the last minute will help shorten your wait time.
Del Din Night Bus service Residents of Caserma Del Din now have a nighttime transportation alternative to paying cab fare. A new Del Din Night Bus service is available every evening from 8:30-11:30 p.m. and from 8:30 p.m. until 3 a.m. Saturdays. Patrons can purchase the â‚Ź2 ticket from the vending machine directly outside Del Din main gate. Maximum waiting time is 20 minutes. To check arrival times by SMS, send the following message to 342-411-2584: AIMS (space) 11150 (space) plus your ticket code number, which appears on your ticket. In a couple of minutes, you will receive an SMS with the bus arrival time. The Del Din bus stop code number is 11150.

T
raining together near the jump tower on Caserma Ederle last week, with temperatures reaching toward 105 degrees Fahrenheit, was a completely different experience for soldiers and Airmen of the U. S. Air Force Detachment 3, 7th Weather Squadron, and the Italian Alpini Comando Truppe Alpini-Servizio Meteomont than the landscape of their previous joint training. That time they met in the snow covered Alps at Passo Tonale in a world blanketed in snow with temperatures below freezing. What the two events do have in common is that they were both biannual partnership training and skills exchanges between the two units. “We call the training program Battlefield Weather Exchange, or BWX,” said Air Force Capt. Jason Scalzitti, commander of the 7th Weather Squadron’s Detachment 3, which is based on Caserma Ederle. From June 9-12 the two units focused on sharing skills and techniques in weather observation and forecasting, another iteration of a bilateral training program that dates back to 2001, he said.
Shared skills, joint mission Scalzitti explained that the primary goals of the partnership are theater security cooperation, host-nation relationship building and a skills exchange to enhance knowledge and proficiency in various meteorological, mountain hazard and weapons disciplines. The skills learned by U.S. personnel have an impact on current contingencies, including Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, where mountain weather forecasting requires specific knowledge of terrain impacts, avalanche threats and other mountain-induced environmental disasters, he said. “The Italians welcomed us in the winter to learn their processes for

We practice our Italian a little bit with them and they learn to practice their English with us. It’s a nice experience that everybody finds rewarding when the week is over,” he added. It was a first ever experience on Caserma Ederle for the eight Alpini troops, who came to Vicenza from Torino, Bolzano and Udine. As part
of their initial orientation, they had the chance to learn how the Air Force supports the Army in the battlefield. Staff Sgt. Marlowe Perry, an airborne weather forecaster attached to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, worked with the Alpini on methods of documenting and radio transmitting field-collected weather data. “The reason this training is so important is because they are our sister NATO forces, for them to be confident in what it is that we do, and for us, when we go and learn the avalanche training. So should we have to work together in the future we will all have a good 360-degree concept of what
each other does and that will help us better fight the mission as a team,” she said. The joint training concluded with an award ceremony at which the Alpini soldiers received certificates. “This strong relationship that we have with them is something that is unique among Air Force weather forces in the world,” said Scalzitti. “This is a program that we are proud of and a program we hope we’ll continue in the future. We also hope that the Alpini headquarters will continue to help us sustain this relationship so we learn from our host nation,” he said. June 20, 2014

Jason Lay 145th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment JONOVA, Lithuania – Joint forward observers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade and Lithuanian Iron Wolf Mechanized Infantry Brigade conducted combined training here June 11 alongside U.S. and Lithuanian joint terminal attack controllers to improve their ability to provide safe and lethal fire support. The Sky Soldiers and the Iron Wolf troops set up equipment on a rooftop in downtown Jonova to practice calling in air support from positions on urban terrain. Jonova is near the base where the paratroopers have been deployed alongside Lithuanian troops conducting unscheduled land-forces exercise since April. Soldiers took turn plotting accurate grids to various locations in the city from their vantage point, working to improve their accuracy in operating in densely urban environments. Responsibilities of a JFO involve scouting an area and locating enemy targets on the ground by accurately plotting each target on a map. Once the target is located, JFOs call in air support with the exact grid coordinates for the JTACs to ensure that no friendly forces are affected during an airstrike. “Our primary mission is to protect friendly forces,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jonathon Mosley, a JTAC assigned to the 2nd Air Support Operations, which supports the 173rd. “We’re here today in the inner city of Jonova with all of the landmarks and structures to challenge our JFOs and their skills in calling in correct air support locations.” Mosley, working with Pfc. Ignas Andziukevicius, a Lithuanian Land Forces JTAC, oversaw the day’s training and assisted the JFOs working on their skills. “We have paratroopers with us today who will be attending the JFO school soon,” said Mosley. “We want them to be ready and able to call in air support in any environment.” Approximately 600 paratroopers from the brigade are currently deployed to Estonia, Pfc. Brudstock 2014
A musical trip to the ‘60s

B
rudstock 2014, a weekend of music and nostalgia harking back to the 1969 Woodstock festival, will take place July 4-6 at the Agriturismo e Pesca Sportiva in Vigonovo di Fontafredda, near Pordenone, about 140 kilometers northeast of Vicenza. The event is an easy 10-km. drive from Aviano Air Base. For those who love or are interested in the classic rock era of the 1960s and 1970s, Brudstock offers a low cost trip back to the sounds and ambiance of the seminal gathering of rock’n’roll tribes at Max Yasgur’s farm near Bethel, New York, in 1969.
Free admission, camping, showers Long time organizer, Bruno, has been staging free concerts based on the Woodstock model — Three Days of Peace, Love and Music — for nearly a decade and a half. All performances are free as are overnight camping, showers and parking. In years past, Bruno has lined up musicians who were there in the heyday of the Woodstock era and are still rocking and rolling. Last year Ken Hensley, multi-instrumentalist and composer with Uriah Heep, was a main draw. In 2012 there was Clive Bunker, the original drummer with Jethro Tull. Among the “soul survivors” performing this year will be Ian Paice, original drummer with Deep Purple and the only band member who played on every album they produced. Paice will command the drummer’s throne when he takes to the stage with his cover band The Rain on the Fourth of July. Next day, July 5, Leo Lyons, original bass player with Ten Years After (who actually performed at the original Woodstock celebration) will take the stage with his band, Hundred Seventy Split. Arianna Antinori and her band, Turtle Blues, headline July 6, delivering the high energy electric blues of Janis Joplin. If you close your eyes it’s easy to believe you are within hearing distance of the great blues singer. There will be a dozen other bands performing that hark back to the classic music of the era, among them Pink Size, a Pink Floyd tribute band, and the Rory Gallagher inspired unit known as Big Guns. The nostalgia extends to other artefacts of the times as well, including displays of vintage automobiles, Vespas, motorcycles and vans. Fiaccolata di Solferino 2014 Torchlight Walk in Solferino The Italian Red Cross has invited national Red Cross societies around the world to join in Fiaccolata di Solferino, a celebration of the ideals of the Red Cross, by joining a 7-kilometer torchlight walk June 21 between the towns of Castiglione and Solferino. This year’s commemoration will take place June 21. The participation fee is €5 per person. Palio di Siena The Palio of Siena is one of the most famous horse races in the world. During the annual spectacle the city is divided into 17 districts (Contrade), which compete against each other. The rivalry is an integral part of the months before the event during which 10 districts are selected for each race. Each is assigned a horse, which will compete in the Piazza del Campo race. There are two races each summer: the first July 2 and the second Aug. 16. The festivities start three days prior to each Palio with parades, food booths, blessing of the horses, live music and four race trials.
NottiLucenti Gleaming nights June 27, 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., in San Gimignano (Siena). NottiLucenti literally means “gleaming at night,” but in geophysics it represents peculiar clouds that are visible only in summer after dusk, when the reflected light is enhanced by a silver light over the black sky. NottiLucenti gleams as well in celebrating art and culture with internationally known artists performing all around the streets and museums of San Gimignano from dusk to dawn. Features live music and performance, guided tours, food and wine tasting. It is free.

Gioco del Ponte Bridge Game This historical event is held in Pisa every year on June 29 from 7-11 p.m. in two distinct phases: first comes an historical procession along the Arno River, which is a sort of grand military parade with as many as 709 participants; and then the battle, which takes place on the Ponte di Mezzo, where neighborhood teams belonging to the two rival factions, Tramontana and Mezzogiorno, north and south of the river, demonstrate their physical power. The Ponte di Mezzo is prepared in advance with a machine like a shopping cart on rails to be pushed by the combatants, a tug-of-war in the opposite direction. Whichever team pushes the cart to the far end of the sliding rail is declared the winner.
