New/Revised Community Bus Services at USAG Grafenwoehr Now in effect: Due to financial constraints, resulting in budget reduction and serious cuts to the TMP fleet of nontactical vehicles (NTVs), a revision of the community bus services was required. A Main Post loop was designed and the frequency of the direct runs between Main Post and Rose Barracks was increased. These two routes should cover a good portion of the required official business travel inside the Grafenwoehr community and between the two communities of the garrison. Services to remote housing areas, except for the Netzaberg, will be limited to two runs per day. Services to Weiden and Parkstein will be added on a probationary basis for Tuesdays. The new bus schedules may also be found here. AKO account holders alternatively can log on and enter "bus schedules" in the AKO search cell. Lil' Mister and Miss Grafenwoehr Pageant on Rose Barracks Presented by the Vilseck and Grafenwoehr Community and Spouses’ Clubs 11 Feb: 10 a.m. at Bldg. 134. Categories are ages: 0-12 mos (Baby), 13 mos -3 yrs (Tiny), 4 yrs-6 yrs (Little), 7-9 years (Jr.). There will be two winners in every age group; a boy and a girl. There will be one Mister Grafenwoehr and one Miss Grafenwoehr chosen from the entire group. The Pageant will take place in the Vilseck High School MPR.

USAG Grafenwoehr Community Retirement ceremony 29 Feb: in the Main Post field House Bldg 547, 4 p.m. with a rehearsal at 1:30 p.m. Also, the uniform for the ceremony has changed to ACU's not ASU's like the memo had stated.
The Army Emergency Relief (AER) program, training AER will begin on March 1 and go to May 15. All Units within USAG Grafenwoehr geographic footprint are requested to provide an AER Representatives. The USAG Grafenwoehr BN S1 will be hosting a special training session for all AER unit representatives on Feb. 27, 9 a.m., hours in Main Post Bldg.533. Training will last approximately 1 hour. GCSC 2012-2013 Scholarship Program The Grafenwoehr Community and Spouses’ Club is offering academic scholarship awards for the 2012-2013 academic years to senior students and family members (spouses and dependents). A tremendous opportunity for eligible garrison family members from the Grafenwoehr, Netzaberg, Vilseck and surrounding military communities desiring to pursue a secondary education. GCSC has distributed $70,000 in scholarships to 40 applicants attending schools in the states and overseas the past two years. Applicants are scored based on academic performance, educational/career goals, extracurricular activities, citizenship, community involvement, employment and/or volunteer experience, an essay and through letters of recommendation. Vilseck High School/home schooled seniors will be interviewed. Applications now being accepted until 26 March at 5 p.m. Scholarships will be awarded during the weekend of 4-6 May. Army’s Qualitative Service Program The Army’s Qualitative Service Program here starts identifying noncommissioned officers for involuntary early separation from active duty April 1.
Records Management - Revolutionary Changes The Army Consolidated Records Schedule (ACRS) has been deployed and replaces the Records Retention ScheduleArmy (RRS-A) effective 6 Jan 12. ACRS consists of 112 record numbers with three retention periods (0-6 years, 6+ years, and permanent). Highlights of the major changes for the new ACRS and their impact on website functions can be found on the ARIMS website (https://www.arims.army.mil). In addition, a new ACRS Quick Reference Guide is available with more details and an explanation of how the new system works. Updates to the ARIMS User's Guide, BAT User's Guide,
and Online Video Tutorials are underway and will be announced as soon as they become available. The document "Records Series Crosswalk" will help you to find the new record numbers and subseries for your old record numbers. Overseas Service Photography Project Announced The Department of Defense announced today that it seeks donations of photographs of U.S. military service life overseas from current and former service members for use in a photo recognition exhibition planned in conjunction with the State Department. The project called “Serving Abroad…Through Their Eyes” will choose images that depict six specific categories: daily life, friendship, places, faces, loss or triumph. Selected images may be used for display in a special photography exhibition planned for the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Pentagon and other prominent venues, stateside and overseas. Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. Outdoor Recreation update An unanticipated loss of staff, has forced us to accelerate the consolidation of Outdoor Recreation Center (ODR) services to Rose Barracks. As we transition the service, this office will only be open on Mondays and Fridays, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. from January 23 - February 29. After March 1, full ODR services will be available on Rose Barracks, Bldg. 2236, and limited services will be available at the MWR Central Office, located in building 539, Main Post, until the Dickhaeuter Lake Outdoor Recreation Complex is complete. Country Music Fair 3 - 5 Feb: in 10243 Berlin, at the Postbahnhof (part of the Ostbahnhof = Train Station East), on Strasse der Pariser Kommune 8. Three days of Country Music Madness! The performers have not been announced online yet but you will find them listed here - in English! Of course you will also be able to buy all the clothes and accessories you need at the fair. Click here for some photos from previous events (in EN). They even provide a list of near-by hotels (in EN) but of course you're not obliged to use them, you can find your own. But if Berlin is too far away for you, maybe you want to wait for the one in Nürnberg. The dates haven't been released yet but it will probably take place in October. The program is now online on the website http://www.countrymusicmesse.de/berlin/english/programm_e.htm The next country music fair will take place in Bayreuth (instead of Nuremberg) and is scheduled for: 22 & 23 September. Country Singer Terri Clark is coming to Bavaria: 3 and 4 July at the Four Corners in Untermeitingen. Tickets are selling out fast, since it is a small Country Bar. Fasching Parties Fasching parades 5 Feb: 1 - 4 p.m., in 80333 München / Munich, from Brienner Straße via Stiglmaierplatz to Richard-Wagner-Straße. Again, please consider parking your car in a P+R car park, and using the public transport system (both links are in English), especially on days like these when traffic diversions will be in place. The Damische Ritter (Facebook, only GE) is the Carnival Club of Munich, and they're putting on a large parade with an expected 1,600 "Narren" and floats. This one will be big! Click here to see a maps of the actual route, and a list of the roads they will pass through. The link is only in GE but that will not matter for the map and the road names. Chinese Fasching 16 Feb: 2 p.m., in 92345 Dietfurt, city center (ca. 35 km / 22 miles SW of Hohenfels) “A Chinese Carnival??” you might ask. Here's an explanatory article that can be found on Dietfurt's homepage: "Did you know that there is a real "Chinese Empire" in Bavaria? Many of you have never heard of it and will probably wonder what it’s all about. Well, this "Chinese Empire" is in fact our little town, Dietfurt on the Altmühl river, the "Town of the Seven Valleys", as we call it. Our nickname "the Chinese" has a historic origin: Our ancestors used to hide behind their strong city wall (as did the Chinese behind their famous wall) not letting in any strangers, not even the Official Receiver of the Bishops. So in a complaint, the bishop’s assistant called the citizens of Dietfurt “Chinese”. As a result of this nickname, a traditional Fasching parade with lots of Chinese costumes is celebrated every year, always taking place on the last Thursday of the Fasching season, on the so-called "Mad Thursday". After the parade, people in colorful fancy dress enjoy a long night out extending into the early hours of next morning. In 1996, a delegation from Dietfurt had been invited by the Peking TV station BTV. The following year the Dietfurt carnival was visited by a high ranking delegation from Peking. Deng Xingzhou, the leader of the delegation and second chairman of the Board for International Culture Exchange, proposed a partnership between Peking and Dietfurt.

Facts about Fasching - Carnival And what, you might ask, is the history of Fasching, or Karneval as Germans further north (and the English-speaking world) call it? The word "Fasching" is thought to derive from the Middle High German "vaschanc" which means "Ausschenken des Fastentrunkes" (serving of the Lenting drink), while there are two versions of the origin of "Karneval": one theory traces the origins of the word back to the Italian "carni vale", which refers to the ban of eating meat during Lent.
The other theory also goes back to Italy: Every year in spring, when ships were allowed to move again, the citizens of Venice celebrated this fact with costumes and a parade. A "ship on wheels" ("Carrus Navalis") was at the center of this parade. From Venice, the idea of celebration made its way to the court of the Medici's in Florence, then from Italy the festivities (and the expression "carnival") traveled to France and then to Germany (and the rest of the world). Mythological background: In Pagan belief, the personified seasons Summer and Winter fought each other every beginning of the year as to who would reign for the rest of the year. During these fights, evil spirits, death, and the unsteady souls of the deceased would rise, and people tried to prevent this by imitating the looks and the behaviour of these dark apparitions. Wild jumps and loud noises as well as the scary costumes donned by the locals were meant to scare off evil spirits. The fight between Summer and Winter (and Life and Death) would always end on Ash Wednesday. Therefore Fasching/Karneval ends on Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday). Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. In the rituals of the Catholic Church, the ashes of the palm fronds from the Palm Sunday of the previous year are consecrated and applied to the churchgoers´ foreheads in the form of a cross as a sign of their mortality. France is the original source of the "Artists' Ash Wednesday", which has become popular through television broadcasts with its religious service with readings and musical performances (also taking place in Vienna and Innsbruck, Austria). Outside the church, Ash Wednesday is emphasized as the end of the Fasching season (if you open the link, you can find some more information about Fasching) and features individual traditions such as: - the "Heringsschmaus" meal (a herring and mayonnaise salad), the culinary refinement of which hardly reminds us of its original meaning (fish as a food for the Lenten Fast); - the "Faschingbegraben", a custom in which the carnival season is symbolically buried or drowned. - In some areas the Fasching is also burnt: a straw puppet that usually had been on display at a guesthouse is burnt in public. - Another custom is the "Geldbeutelwaschen", the washing of one's wallet on Ash Wednesday: The wallet has lost so much money during Fasching that people go down to a river or a pond or fountain. Then a "Gaudibursch" holds a speech saying that all money has been "guzzled away" and the wallet is empty now; therefore it should be "washed out" so that "better" money could replace the old money. The Geldbeutelwaschen can most famously be seen in Munich at the Fischbrunnen (at the Marktplatz): here the Lord Mayor of Munich washes his wallet every year to ask for more money for his city's empty treasury. A special day during the Fasching season is “Weiberfasching” (Women’s Carnival Day) on Thursday, 15 Feb. This is the day when from early in the morning on, the streets are alive with ladies in fancy dresses on their way to their place of work or to the shops, and from 10.00 a.m. they all usually head towards the town center or town hall to “take over the city”! It is also the day when traditionally, women cut off all men’s ties they can get a hold off. On this day women assume complete power for the day. Any man foolish enough to wear a tie on this day runs the risk of having it cut off just below the knot. In the evening countless parties and masked balls are held and men are, of course welcome to join the celebrations provided they foot the bill for all the women’s drinks. Musical: Blue Jeans 8 & 9 Feb: 7:30 p.m. both days, in 92224 Amberg, at the Stadttheater (city theater), Schrannenplatz 8, ph 0962-191-3191. A family in a small German city in the 1950s experiences the revolution that came with the daughter's love for Rock'n'Roll and blue jeans, and opens to a new way of thinking. Ticket prices vary, of course, depending on your seat. Best free parking lots are at "Auf der Wiesen", the car park behind the Kurfürstenbad (indoor swimming pool) and the Hotel Arcadia; the other one is the park block opposite Sulzbacher Straße 5. Both parking areas are only a tiny walking distance from Amberg's city center.

"Mother Africa - Circus of Senses" is a fascinating show for everyone who loves to experience a new, exciting, exotic circus - something for all senses. "Mother Africa" (in EN) is more than just a circus, it's a sensational show full of colour! Due to VERY restricted parking, it is highly recommended you park your car or motorcycle at the "Parkhaus P3" (parking block P3) at the nearby "Allianz Arena" (soccer stadium), and use the IMOT shuttle bus from there.
