Hoops for Troops

SINCE LAUNCHING ITS HOOPS FOR TROOPS PROGRAM IN 2006, USA BASKETBALL TEAMS HAVE CONNECTED WITH THOUSANDS OF AMERICAN MILITARY MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGH A COMPREHENSIVE SERIES OF ACTIVITIES DURING THE USA MEN’S AND WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAMS TRAINING AND EXHIBITION SCHEDULES OVER THE PAST EIGHT YEARS. 2014 WAS NO DIFFERENT AS USA BASKETBALL PARTICIPATED IN SOME EXCITING NEW HOOPS FOR TROOPS ACTIVITIES SURROUNDING THE 2014 USA BASKETBALL MEN'S AND WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAMS, AS WELL AS THE 2014 USA MEN’S U17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM. LAST SUMMER THE 2014 USA U17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM PARTICIPATED IN THE HOOPS FOR TROOPS PROGRAM AT TWO BASES IN DOHA, QATAR. USA TEAM MEMBERS TOOK ON U.S. SERVICE MEMBERS IN A SHOOTING CONTEST, DINED WITH THEM IN THE MESS HALL AND CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LIVE OVERSEAS ON DEPLOYMENT.

“I just remember the bond that we created at such a young age,” said André Drummod, who won golds in 2009 and 2010 and is a member of the 2014-16 USA Men’s National Team. “Even to this day, we’re all out here on the same floor again. It’s definitely a blessing that we started so early and got to know each other well. We ended up going to big-time colleges and played against each other. Mike (Kidd-Gilchrist) got the best of all of us and won the championship (laughs). It’s just great we’re all here in the NBA together.”

“You have to realize that this is a big sacrifice,” said 2014-16 USA Men’s National Team member and 2010 U17 World Championship MVP Bradley Beal. “Everybody plays pretty good defense. So, you have to sacrifice for the good of everybody else. That’s what I loved about the team I was on. Everybody sacrificed and we all played together. We had one mission in mind and that was to win the gold medal and we were able to do that. My only advice to them is to focus on the task at hand.”

“It’s completely different from playing high school basketball or AAU, or a camp, because it’s really all about the name on the front of your chest – USA Basketball,” said Jahlil Okafor, who played on his fourth USA team in the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit. “When you travel to those countries, when you walk into the gym or your walking around the streets, wherever you are at, all the eyes are on you, and that’s because you have USA across your chest. So, you have to forget the name that’s on the back of your jersey and just go all out and try to represent USA Basketball in the best way possible.”

"It was more difficult, just because we were playing teams from all across the world,” said three-time USA Basketball gold medalist Tyus Jones, who dished out a USA-high 5.4 assists at the 2012 U17s and will play for Duke University next year. “It’s not the Americas. Teams like Australia and Lithuania, those teams were really tough. Our competition had another year to develop, so they were bigger and stronger and more skilled. The difficulty in the level of play was definitely increased going to the U17s from the U16s.”
