MHFA is skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge. Similar to physical First Aid and CPR, MHFA helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• Describe the purpose of Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Mental Health First Aider.

• Identify the impact of mental health and substance use challenges on the wellbeing of American adults.

• Explain that recovery from a mental health or substance use challenge is possible.

• Describe the principles of safety and privacy for both the Mental Health First Aider and the person receiving first aid.

• Explain the 5 steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).

• Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact adults.

• Evaluate the impact of early intervention on mental health and substance use challenges.

• Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario where a person shows early signs of a mental health or substance use challenge.

• Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a non-crisis scenario where a person shows worsening signs of a mental health or substance use challenge.

• Apply the appropriate steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE) to a crisis scenario where a person shows signs of a mental health or substance use crisis.

• Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.

ACCREDITATION

The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Pharmacists can earn 8.0 contact hours for the Mental Health First Aid training (6.0 contact hours live and 2.0 contact hours home study)

Two hours of self-paced learning is required prior to in-person meeting. The following process will be followed:

 Participants will be invited to register for the MHFA Online Learning Portal (MHFA Connect) by the URI MHFA instructor, Hannah Fish.

 Once participants register for the training, the instructor will formally enroll them into the course.

 Once enrolled, participants will have access to the self-paced learning, which they are required to complete prior to the in-person training on March 13.

EVALUATION: All participants will have the opportunity to review the educational sessions and speakers and identify future educational needs. Program attendees can earn Continuing Education (CE) credits for this program by electronically logging onto the website: https://www.uripharmacycpd.org/, inserting the activity-specific access codes, and completing the activity learning assessment and program evaluation form. Participant names will be checked against program registrations for verification of attendance. Participants have 60 days to complete evaluations. You will be notified of any problems transmitting your participant data via email. Most transmission problems are related to errors in transcribing date of birth and or NABP ID number. It is strongly recommended that you check your CPE Monitor profile to verify your participation in this program has been reported. CPE Monitor will reject CE data submitted after 60 days. *Your license number, date of birth, and NABP ID number are required to create an account in the URI CPD online registration and evaluation system to report participant data to the CPE Monitor. Pharmacy license numbers will not be used for any other purpose.
