Radical Thoughts about Nonprofit Boards “How many of your current board members are actually worth paying? If you had to pay your members, what board positions would you fund?” These questions caught our eye as we read a promotional piece for a book about philanthropy. The author, Jimmy LaRose poses provocative ideas in Re-Imagining Philanthropy. He promotes the idea that boards are not about governance, visioning, policy-making, volunteerism, or management. He believes these roles should be filled by a strong CEO. He advocates for a board of six experts who cover the areas of law, communications and marketing, entrepreneurship and accounting. They should be joined by an individual with expertise in your area of programming and a nonprofit expert. That’s it! Their role – in LaRose’s opinion – is to fulfill obligations related to IRS compliance. The remaining roles attributed to board members – he believes – can be filled be advisors.

What items would be on the agenda? How would the time be used during the meeting, and what type of follow-up would occur? Would you pay your board members to attend a board meeting? Would you pay them to participate in a teleconference? What would you expect in return? Are your expectations tied to compensating board members for their time? Are you uncomfortable asking board members to bring their expertise to the table without pay? If yes, why do you feel that way? If you are a board member, do you treat your board responsibilities differently from your professional obligations? Do you bring your “A game” to board meetings? Here are a few other questions. Do you believe the board should determine the vision, or should that be decided by the executive? In general terms, do you operate with a strong executive or a strong board? Who is setting direction for your organization? Does it make a difference? Finally, we know many small colleges and emerging nonprofits struggle with who is actually responsible for ensuring sustainability, responsiveness and innovation. Is it the board? The executive? What are your thoughts? What is the way forward?

“Their role...is to fulfill obligations related to IRS compliance. The remaining roles attributed to board members...can be filled be advisors.”

Reading the promo piece triggered a major question for us: How would an executive director and staff prepare for a board meeting knowing that board members were being paid $1,000/day plus travel expenses (LaRose’s idea)? How would the board chair and the board members prepare? Would the level of preparation required by all parties increase?

of Richmond Community High School

GPA: 3.7 College of Interest: Christopher Newport University Major Community Service: JohnstonWillis Hospital and church Strong Interests: Health and pediatrics Favorite Activities: Volunteering, singing in her church choir and spending time with friends

From watching “Animal Planet” and building an interest in science, to telling her relatives that she wanted to be a “baby doctor,” Jordan Oliver has always wanted to work in the health field. Her interests have evolved, and while she’s not sure about the specific type of doctor she will be, Jordan knows she wants to work in pediatrics. She has even gotten to experience first-hand what it’s like to work in the medical field as a volunteer at Johnston-Willis Hospital. “Shadowing doctors, gaining new information and experiences, further stimulates my drive for learning and my curiosity,” Jordan stated in an essay. “Equally satisfying is being able to care for patients alongside doctors and nurses.” Along with spending time with friends and volunteering at her church, Jordan’s time in the hospital is one of her favorite things to do.

working at the hospital. She was able to work in the motherinfant section, neonatal unit, nursery, cancer center and the neurology unit. This fall, to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor, Jordan will attend Christopher Newport University. She described the campus as not too big and not too small. She liked the school because of the small class sizes, the suite style bathrooms and dorms, and the overall atmosphere of the school. Jordan loved that during her campus visit, everyone was warm and welcoming. The main lesson she will take with her to college is to not procrastinate.

Scholar0

Along with volunteering, when she was in high school, Jordan also ™ participated in the National Society of High School Scholars, the Foreign Language Association of Virginia and FBLA. With all of her extracurricular work, Jordan worked hard to graduate with a 3.7 GPA.

During her time at the hospital, Jordan has been able to learn a lot about the field and also connect with patients on a personal level. This included a ninety-year-old woman who taught Jordan just how important hospital staff can be for patients. Not only do they care for them, but the staff sometimes just needs to show that they care. Jordan did just that by asking the woman to eat lunch with her. “Forgotten by her family and ignored by her friends, kindness was a stranger to her – even though I was only offering a chicken sandwich,” Jordan reflected. Sharing this moment made both of them happy. Jordan also enjoyed the variety of experiences she had

One of her inspirations is her mother, who received her doctorate in her own passion, counseling. Jordan’s mother constantly motivates her to further her education and receive her doctorate as well. “My number one goal would be helping people because I love to help people,” Jordan said. As she pursues her long-term goal of becoming a doctor, she hopes to do this and even more.

Seriously? The old adage “Do what I say not what I do” is more confusing than clear. It is more contradictory than well-defined and distinct. The statement sends mixed messages and leaves room for misinterpretation and obfuscation of the truth. We are standing historically at a “type” of crossroads where mixed messages, omission of facts, false equivalencies, and obfuscation of the truth are more damaging and destructive than they have been in quite some time.

openly, honestly and directly to what racism, white supremacy and antiSemitism is, we will be completely ineffective in extricating ourselves from its poisonous and cancerous effects. The very fabric of our national character and standing in the world is at stake. We cannot allow mixed messages and lukewarm responses that lack any moral character or authority to stir the cauldron of confusion and dissent. The longer the President refuses to address the horror of what happened in Charlottesville and the clear white nationalist ideology within the corridors of his White House for what they are, confusion will rein and the simmering pot of racial unrest will continue to boil and stew.

INSPIRING BL Whether it is money, fear of the unknown, or fear of racism, there are many Black people who haven’t experienced the joys of traveling. This is something people of all races may face, but traveling can be an exciting, memorable and educational experience. Yes, there are “horror” stories about how Black people are treated abroad, but there are also plenty of great stories. Over the years, there has been a rise in travel companies, websites and blogs that are all about promoting Black travel. You may get stared at, asked to take pictures or asked if people can touch your hair, but these dilemmas are matched by all of the positive experiences traveling, both internationally and domestically, can bring. Some websites and travel companies highlight these experiences and give advice on these topics.

BLACK & ABROAD:

Black & Abroad is one example of one such inspiration. In April 2015, Eric Martin and Kent Johnson combined their love for traveling and founded “Black & Abroad.” From South Africa, the Netherlands, Mexico to Australia, Iceland and Martinique, they have traveled all over and wanted to inspire others to do the same.

“We needed to see more of our community exploring the world with us and we wanted to tap into a sense of pride when doing so,” they 6

Urban Views Weekly | August 16, 2017

stated on their website. “We both agreed that although the collective black dollar spent close to $50 billion each year on travel, there was a severe lack of representation within the industry.” Their mission to “explore, embrace and empower” has encouraged many to join their movement. Their website features the stories of other Black people traveling. From personal experiences, to how to travel on a budget and travel suggestions, the site encourages others to take an adventure abroad. Through sites like Facebook and Instagram, they also share many aesthetic photos. Black & Abroad also looks at inspiring youth who they collaborate with to help take international journeys. To learn more about Black & Abroad, visit their website at www.weareblackandabroad.com.

TRAVEL NOIRE:

Another great resource to get inspired to travel is Travel Noire. The digital publishing platform provides resources to members of the African diaspora who want to travel. Its curators select people from all over the world to share their travel stories. Different articles on topics like food and style are included. For example, how natural hair is perceived in different areas of the world may be one topic discussed. To learn more about Travel Noire visit: www.travelnoire. com/category/style/

“Traveling is so important world is so much bigger TRAVELING DOMESTICALLY: International travel isn’t the only way to do it. Taking road trips without spending money on flights could be fun too. Places like the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C. are great excuses to get out of your hometown. If you’re from D.C., there are multiple other museums to

possible. National and school scholarships, offices dedicated to international relations, and even competitions can help students study abroad. In 2014 through 2015, the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA) reported that 5.6 percent of African American or Black students traveled abroad. American Indian/Alaska Native students made up 0.5%; Multiracial students made up 4.1%; Asian/Pacific Islander students made up 8.1%; Hispanic/Latino American students made up 8.8%; and Caucasian students made up 72.9%. Let’s raise the number of Black students and students of color who are exploring the world.

because it shows you the r than your state or city.” visit. From the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to exploring other cultural museums, there’s plenty to explore in the United States.

STUDYING ABROAD:

One easy way for college students and young adults to travel, is to study abroad. While this can also be expensive, there are many options to make this

Cydni Gordon is one person who has been able to travel extensively, starting with her study abroad experience to Mexico in college. “Traveling has shown me how much you can learn about yourself when you step out of your everyday world,” Cydni said. “It has brought out some of the qualities that I’m most proud of and some I didn’t know I had.” Cydni said the thrill of wandering around a new city never gets old, and she cherishes her first study abroad experience for influencing her to continue traveling. She enjoys the challenge of navigating new cultures, overcoming language barriers and pushing herself to try new things.

WOMEN OF COLOR ABROAD:

There are many different travel groups and websites specifically for

women of color. This includes Blue Zaria. “I hope to inspire Black girls and women to travel…dare to be different by living life unconventionally,” Tracy Hogarth, founder and director of Blue Zaria, said on the website. During her travels, Tracy also looks for cultural and girls’ movements around the world. Brown Girls Fly is “a melanin-infused perspective on travel.” This site not only shares the stories of brown women out exploring the world, it also provides help with trip planning and suggestions for different destinations. Nomadness Travel Tribe was founded in 2011 by Evita Turquoise Robinson. It is described as an online community for travelers all over. The group has over 15,000 international members, it has crowd funded over $40,000, and its docuseries, The NOMADNESS Project, has over 200,000 subscribers on Youtube.

OTHER REASONS TO TRAVEL, ACCORDING TO THOSE WHO LOVE IT:

Below, some people share why they enjoy traveling, both domestically and internationally.

Sita Miller is an independent travel agent who is a part of a travel group and travel bloggers. She gives people advice on travel dilemmas and also shares her own experiences. Not only does she enjoy helping other people travel, she enjoys the deals she gets on her own travel. “Traveling is so important because it shows Continues to Page 11 www.UrbanViewsWeekly.com

Are You Getting Enough Protein in Your Diet?

Fewer calories, more protein is a winning combo for weight loss and healthy aging! Do you pay attention to how much protein you eat at each meal? A new study suggests that when it comes to weight loss and healthy aging, getting enough protein at mealtimes is important. Duke University researchers found obese women who ate adequate or high amounts of protein, including nutrient-rich lean pork, as part of a six-month, weight-loss diet not only lost weight, they improved their ability to get around, too. “There’s no magic bullet when it comes to weight loss,” said Connie Bales, PhD, professor in medicine at Duke University. “But our research suggests a higher-protein, lower-calorie diet, including lean pork, could be a viable solution – especially for older women who are most at risk.”

While most Americans eat the majority of their protein at dinner, researchers suggest there could be benefits to spreading protein throughout the day. In this study, women ate 30 grams of protein at each meal with two of the meals including lean pork. Choices like tenderloin, lowsodium ham, chops and lean ground pork are among the seven cuts of pork that meet the USDA guidelines for “lean” by containing less than 10 grams of fat, 4.5 grams of saturated fat and 95 milligrams of cholesterol per 100 grams of meat. In fact, pork tenderloin has the same amount of fat as a skinless chicken breast. The next time you fire up your grill, try these lemon-basil pork chops. Serve up 30 grams of tasty protein for dinner, while tapping into the flavors of summer.

Grilled Lemon-Basil Pork Chops with Lemon-Basil Orzo - Serves: 4 4 bone-in ribeye (rib) pork chops, about 3/4-inch thick 3 small lemons 2 tablespoons olive oil 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped 8 ounces orzo salt, to taste pepper, to taste Zest and juice lemons. In small bowl, combine lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and basil. Set aside 3 tablespoons of mixture. Transfer remaining mixture to large resealable bag and add pork. Set aside for 30 minutes, turning occasionally. Meanwhile, prepare orzo according to package directions. Drain and return orzo to pot. Stir in reserved lemon-basil mixture and salt and pepper to taste. Set aside to cool to room temperature. www.UrbanViewsWeekly.com

“understand that the world is bigger than your city.” Miguel Almodovar described travel as an educational experience. He said “traveling is the least expensive education you can get for yourself.”

Travis Ellison said traveling does a lot for the mind, body and soul. He’s been able to travel more due to job opportunities, and spoke on his experience. “You see new places but you’re able to relate to places you’ve already been. It opens your eyes to all of the possibilities,” Travis said. ”It’s important to see new things, see new people, and communicate with people who grew up differently.”
