THE LOOK OF A SERENE BEDROOM

Tom Holley, owner of Crazy Jane’s, designed the interiors in this modern masterpiece by Pfahl Architects for a much-loved, longtime client couple on a large corner lot in Elizabeth. Warmth, coziness, and drama were brought into the home through the use of organic materials in the furnishings (something of a design signature for Holley), soft fabrics/hides/leathers, and bursts of color throughout. New art was added to the already substantial owners’ collection that greets guests from the front door to the back. Bold accent wallpapers were used to dramatic effect, like the one from Jill Seale in the primary bedroom, which was

custom colored for the clients. Motorized shades and drapes in black to match the windows and doors make for subtle light blocking and offer no distraction to the art-filled spaces. The covered and uncovered outdoor areas, as well as the large pool and sundeck, make the house feel like a resort a mere ten minutes from Uptown.

Holley has been in business almost twenty-eight years and works with clients from the beginning of the design process to the end, on projects large or small. He works with clients not only in the Charlotte area but also on lots of coastal projects in North Carolina and South Carolina, Florida, New York, and California. We also thought it a perfect time to harness that power and transform HD&D. After more than twenty years, it was time for a facelift, and playing with palettes seemed like a fun way to start. We haven’t changed our mission to be Charlotte’s premier publication for aspirational design and on-trend features, we just look even better while doing it. We’ve amplified our upscale voice while remaining steadfast in our passion for discovering the newest and best interior design talent and resources in the Carolinas.

Throwing on a color that you know complements your unique sensibilities never feels like a risk. With bold new lines and a bold new showroom, Schumacher opens its doors in Charlotte.

“IT WAS A NATURAL CHOICE to have Barrie Benson design our new space in Charlotte, a city I have come to know and love,” says Dara Caponigro, Schumacher’s creative director. And so it went: Schumacher chose Charlotte as their newest location for a showroom because of its rapidly growing art and design community and how it has established itself as a new hub for interior designers and like-minded individuals.

“Plus, Barrie is one of our collaborators at Schumacher,” Caponigro continues. “She and Chandra Johnson of SOCO Gallery have brought so many interesting artist collaborations to Schumacher under their Peg Norriss brand, all of which have been successes.”

Naturally, the newest collaboration between Peg Norriss and multidisciplinary artist Clare Rojas, released in March, is yet another collection that Schumacher foresees as

an instant classic. Rojas has two shows set to open in Charlotte this fall, one at SOCO Gallery and the other at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. “My work is inspired by the fusion of nature and feminism, and this collection is an extension of that,” says Rojas.

“We always have so many great designs to choose from that it’s often hard to pick our favorites,” says Caponigro. “It frequently takes a couple of meetings to whittle down the ideas.” The result is a line of fabrics and wallpapers that is clean and contemporary, graphic and uplifting.

The East Boulevard showroom boasts 3,500-squarefeet of loft-like space with compelling juxtapositions of old and new. Featuring luxurious terrazzo floors, custom oak cabinetry, antique mirrored walls, and more than seven-thousand Schumacher fabrics, wallpapers, and rugs throughout, the building will house both a to-the-trade design lab and a retail boutique with antiques, home accessories, and more.

Monthly educational and inspirational events will be held to bring together Charlotte-area design lovers, along with fun activities including flower-arranging classes, trunk shows, book signings, and workshops for interior designers. And, of course, Schumacher’s impeccable taste in the newest collaborations and collections, just like this colorful Peg Norriss and Clare Rojas line, can be expected at every turn.

Praj Hagargi was climbing the corporate ladder in the IT world when she had an aha moment. “I had to follow my calling for interior design, and I’ve never looked back,” she says. Since 2016, the designer behind Revira Interiors has put her natural eye for design to work, and nowhere is that more apparent than in her own home.

When she and her husband purchased their Waxhaw home, it was head-to-toe beige—and Hagargi is anything but neutral. “I was drawn to the vaulted ceilings and a beautiful view of nature off the back of the home,” she explains. Using the outside as her inspiration, Hagargi set her design in motion, incorporating subtle colorways of blues and greens against a neutral backdrop. “When you bring in many bold colors, sometimes they spar,” she explains. “I didn’t want that. I wanted it to be less overwhelming. We are surrounded with lush greens, so I wanted to keep the interiors subdued and subtle.”

The home is a lesson in ‘less is more,’ with small but impactful doses of color coupled with midcentury modern and transitional elements—“a fresh take on modern silhouettes,” as she puts it. The result: an inviting and sophisticated aesthetic that will last.

“We are surrounded with lush greens, so I wanted to keep the interiors subdued and subtle.”



Beyond the Horizon

Jones and David Goldhagen use their respective mediums in immersive, inviting ways: Jones with her expansive oil painting and Goldhagen with his hypnotic glass work. Designer Kit Kemp unveils Firmdale Hotels’ newest addition to the New York collection, redefining the meaning of design-forward.

 Bold fabrics, bright walls, and a hand-drawn picture of the hotel dot the elevator wing of the lobby.

 For a special family getaway, consider adjoining suites, complete with one dedicated entrance to separate rooms, making it feel just a little more like home. Or treat yourself to one of the suites with a private terrace, adorned with a wooden trellis and fairy lights.

AMONG THE FAMILIAR silvery steel buildings and red-brick warehouses that dot lower Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood stands a bold blue beacon beckoning travelers to experience accommodations in a riot of color.

The Warren Street Hotel’s windowed-front facade is drenched in bright blue and capped with a yellow roof— merely an amuse-bouche to the delights that are inside.

Designed by renowned interior designer and Firmdale Hotels’ founder and creative director Kit Kemp, Warren Street combines instinctive guest comforts with a highly designed yet comfortable feel, and rounds out the experience with specially commissioned art, a modern restaurant, and cozy pockets at every turn.

Each of the hotel’s sixty-nine rooms and suites feature Kemp’s interpretation of the city’s nineteenth-century textile roots, swathed from wall to headboard in her own designed fabrics, including her latest collaborations with Christopher Farr Cloth, GP&J Baker, and Spode. The kaleidoscope of colors and patterns play together in a way that never ceases merriment and feels like coming home to a comfy jewel box after a long day walking the city. Luxe bathrooms feature TVs in front of the soaking tubs, ample showers, and even bidets for the European leaning.

The Warren Street Bar & Restaurant is a Technicolor dream in extreme detail, from patterned chairs to the mural wallcoverings and sculpted light fixtures to illuminated handmade ceramic pots in the Orangery.

THIS EXTENSIVE RENOVATION YIELDS

A BLANK CANVAS PRIMED FOR HEAVY DOSES OF COLOR—AND loads of pink

DESIGNER FRANCES STILL IS NO STRANGER TO color

In fact, one might say that the designer’s calling card is color. So when she was approached by her client to design a home bursting with bold hues and patterns, she was more than eager to dive in. Except this time, she was also tasked with incorporating pink, and all of its glorious, saturated hues therein. “I’m often asked to add pops of color to my clients’ homes, but pink was not what I was expecting,” laughs Still of Kinloch Interiors.

The home, located in Greenville, South Carolina, could certainly handle the bold color choice. The traditional colonial house boasted clean architectural features and strong bones, but it needed major TLC. With the help of Croft Architecture and Coln Construction, a renovation down to the studs resulted in a more open floor plan today.

It also left a blank canvas for Still to color-fy, which is where the real transformation began. “I could tell the moment I met the homeowner that her style was colorful and fun,” says Still. Adds the homeowner, “I knew right away that Frances was the designer I wanted to work with on this remodel. I am a colorful girl, and she knows how to do color. The spaces she creates are colorful and unique while still having a style that will stand the test of time.”

With her client’s personal style as inspiration, Still started in the dining room, easily one of the most color saturated—and dramatic—spaces in the home. Custom lattice millwork in aqua blue complements the graphic Brunschwig & Fils bird-and-floral wallpaper in a similar colorway, while pink cut velvet fabrics add that special note to the space. But not all rooms are awash in color. The family room features strong strokes of thoughtful pattern and saturated hues, but the walls were kept neutral “to give all this color some room to shine.” Even the client’s home office toes the line with color; the designer utilized a neutral grasscloth on the walls to offset the playful gold Dana Gibson for Stroheim wallcovering on the ceiling.

For Still, the project was a joyful challenge, as her client not only tasked her with injecting pink throughout, but also requested an aesthetic sans black. “That was hard,” laughs Still. “In my other designs, I like to put black and white in everything.” Instead, she used navy in places like the molding detail in the home office and metallics such as brass to accent and provide a neutral edge.

“We wanted to give the L-shaped hallway personality, but it had to flow with all of the rooms attached to it," says Still. "The House of Harris ceiling wallpaper had all the perfect colors.” Lighting: Visual Comfort. Console table: Villa & House. Mirror: Villa & House.

The constraints, though, only spurred the designer, forcing her to dive deep into her design arsenal to create a one-of-a-kind interior for her client. “One thing that’s really important to me is that my designs reflect my clients and their personalities, not mine,” says Still. “I had to channel my inner ‘extra’ to get this home where my client wanted it to be.” For the homeowner, the design exceeded her expectations. “I can honestly say that every room in the house makes me so happy to walk into,” she says. “What I love so much about the design of this house is that it is unlike anyone else’s.”

To give the home office a masculine touch, Still added a neutral grasscloth by Phillip Jeffries to the walls.

More than a decade ago, Stefano and Joya Pavesi fell in love with historic Dilworth. When they found a century-old single-story home with a full walk-up attic, they knew that with time and a keen sense of direction, they could soften and enhance the flow of the house into a warm, welcoming home for their growing family.

“We needed an interior designer with an eye for architectural details, and when I saw Susan’s work featured in a magazine, I knew she was the one to bring our vision to life,” Joya says.

For Susan Hill, owner of Susan Hill Interior Design, the home was a blank slate of possibilities that needed TLC and a vision. “There was a tremendous amount of potential in the center hallway to make a first impression impact as you enter the home,” Hill says. “We also reclaimed space by taking the roof off, and while we stuck with most of the structure on the first floor, we did implement some additional framing plans there to increase functionality and ease of traffic flow. It all worked together to make this older home feel more expansive and livable.”

To embrace the European-inspired ambiance of a French villa, the Pavesis requested that all doorways be raised to arches and softened with the removal of the casings. They also wanted a specialty treatment on the walls in the center hallway to add texture and interest, so Hill designed a reeded wall with hidden doors for maximum impact upon entry.

Joya wanted her love of gardening to be a central theme in the home’s design. As such, much of the home’s lighting was inspired by nature, from the flush-mount floral fixture from Anthropologie in the home’s drop zone to the dining room’s chandelier, evocative of weathered flowers and foliage. Even the butterfly sconces installed upstairs evoke nature. The main powder room is a celebration of all things gardening, featuring bold botanical wallpaper, brass bird knobs on the vanity, and a chandelier that Joya describes as an “ode to a bird’s nest.”

Color is another common motif threaded throughout the design. “Joya loves blue, so we implemented a varying palette of muted blue hues in the home,” says Hill. “I think of blue as a neutral color, and it built a great foundation on which to pull in pops of more vibrant colors without becoming too busy.” From the richer, saturated shade in the kids’ drop zone to the barely-there pale hue of the entertainment center, Joya’s love of blue is apparent and is echoed and built upon in other design aspects. The hand-painted tiles in the laundry room pull on rich blue tones while the home’s vibrant bouquet of rugs, pillows, accessories, and art impart dramatic pops of color. The watercolor wallpaper in the kids’ space creates a fun play environment.

The final design is a study in classic-meets-modern with a touch of posh. The powder room’s fresh botanical wallpaper pairs with a classic vanity and marble countertop. Cleaved-face limestone tiles turn the traditional dining room fireplace into a soft, modern focal point. Bi-hinge doors at the top of the staircase, intricate millwork, and statement lighting create impact.

“We preserved the historical elements of the home but also introduced classic architectural features that gave a nod to the influences of European homes while also increasing storage and functionality for a busy family of four,” Hill says.

“This renovation was a labor of love and time, and we are so proud of the result,” Joya says. “I wake up happy every day in this home.”

A multi-renovation project spans the lengthy relationship between designer Gray Walker and her clients.

’ve worked with these clients ever since I opened my doors in 1998,” says designer Gray Walker, as she lists out the number of homes she’s worked on for them, including two beach homes, a mountain home, and three primary residences.

The homeowners originally purchased this house, a Georgian colonial with a slate roof, because they loved the traditional layout and its location on a quiet street close to Uptown. The couple didn’t make any changes initially— “We didn’t even paint,” says the homeowner—but once they had a child, they knew they needed to expand the home’s smaller footprint.

Walker worked with the homeowners during the first renovation in 1999, which saw the addition of a breakfast room to the existing kitchen, and, above it, an owner’s bathroom on the second floor. “We basically connected the back of the house to the detached garage,” says the homeowner.

Nearly two years later, the couple gave birth to twins, which prompted yet another renovation—this time, the addition of a playroom. “As we had children and they grew, the space needs changed,” says the homeowner. “We added on to make it suit our family.” Another room that needed renovating was the kitchen, which was small and outdated. The homeowners wanted more than just extra space, though. “They wanted the kitchen to feel like a living area, because it’s where they live as a family,” says the designer. To that end, Walker designed the kitchen island to resemble a Louis XVI antique table and added a Kentucky cypress ceiling that runs through the kitchen, breakfast

nook, and formal breakfast room. Across from the island, a mirrored door leads into the pantry; in the breakfast nook, built-in cabinetry displays the homeowner’s heirloom silver and china. “We were very purposeful when we planned the kitchen,” says the homeowner.

The home underwent its most recent transformation in 2023. After the twins went to college, Walker and the homeowners freshened up the downstairs rooms with bold new colors and textures, like the pair of tropical print panels from Paul Montgomery that hang in the living room and the rainbow-hued runner from Stark in the entryway. They also moved around existing pieces such as the paintings the homeowners collected from galleries over the past thirty years and some of the antiques, many of which have been sourced from New Orleans. “I like for things to feel glamorous,” says Walker. “I believe you should pull out your great things every day—your silver, your china, your beautiful flower vases. You can create your own little fantasy island in your home.”

Throughout the years, Walker and the homeowner have bonded over a shared appreciation of beautiful art and antiques—one of the many reasons they’ve worked so successfully together over the past three decades. “Gray is immensely talented and creative,” says the homeowner. “She loves antiques and what they bring to a home, but she also loves the juxtaposition of modern elements. And she listens to my voice. She wants me to find something that I love, something that I look at for a number of years, and be happy that I made that choice.” With this latest transformation, the homeowners have done just that.

The creation of friends Karol Ann Kreshon and Tracy Holman, The Designers Marketplace is a creative space where designers collaborate, share ideas, and work on projects.

WHEN KAROL ANN Kreshon and Tracy Holman combined their love of design with a penchant for entrepreneurial endeavors, they created a hub of creative sources and tools to streamline and foster efficient interior design project sourcing. As a venture born of a shared dream between friends, The Designers Marketplace builds upon that sense of collaboration, focusing on sharing ideas and resources within the Charlotte design community.

“The Designers Marketplace is the culmination of a long-held dream to provide a collaborative environment of resources for Charlotte’s interior designers,” Kreshon says. “Our one-stop showroom enables designers to access high-end product lines at optimum pricing while also acting as a space to share ideas and friendly conversation, surrounded by tools and services to streamline their creative process. Our designers truly want to help one another.”

In its seven years, The Designers Marketplace has more than quadrupled its footprint to a 12,000-square-foot showroom and receiving warehouse while also adding a comprehensive website. Expanded offerings include products from more than seventy-five manufacturers in upholstery, case goods, rugs, window treatments, and accessories, as well as three lines of cabinetry for kitchen, bath, and built-ins. Top lines include Arteriors, Four Hands, Sherrill Furniture, Regina Andrew, and Vanguard.

Charlotte-area designers champion The Designers Marketplace’s business model and tout them as a valuable partner, noting inventory and product selection, designer pricing with no minimums, and a collaborative spirit as key components in their successful projects.

Additionally, they host a variety of interior design meetings and vendor days, measure and install custom window treatments, oversee cabinetry in kitchen renovations or new builds, and provide CAD work while offering their own trusted installers.

The Mighty Field Pea

THIS VEGGIE is a wonder. As the field pea grows from late spring through summer, its roots add nitrogen to the soil to replenish what other crops have depleted. Isn’t that a perfect metaphor for life? Leave it better than you found it. Take care of those around you.

That’s just one of the many reasons the field pea is my favorite of all the vegetables.

In addition to its nutritional value, the tiny field pea packs big flavor. I grew up eating field peas (and plates full of other veggies) out of my granddaddy’s garden on warm summer nights. Then, when I lived in High Point, I grew them in my own garden that provided produce to my first restaurant. I love them so much that we buy them in bulk so that we can freeze them and serve them year-round at Noble Smoke. I also named a catering company after them.

SCULLERIES AND FANCY PANTRIES are a big deal as of late. I have designed a few that are so pretty they don’t even need a door. The more exposed, the better. Typically, they are a mix of closed storage and open shelving used to display “the pretty things.” In many cases, these spaces contain a small bar with wine storage and beautiful brass shelves for storing glasses and other items. My one-hundred-yearold house doesn’t have such a thing, so I live vicariously through my clients, creating gorgeous designs in smaller spaces to house growing wine collections.

When the owners of this home, the Lucianis, asked me to design an entire wine room, I jumped at the opportunity. The climate-controlled, glassed-in wine space was designed with love by the couple, with help from Steve Shonts of Shonts Wine Cellars. His expertise with walnut shelving and racks gave the family the wine-storage space they had always imagined. When it comes to gorgeous wine-room storage, he is the guy.

So why did they need me? Because just outside of those glass doors was the perfect room for entertaining, and we wanted to create a comfortable and moody ambiance that was bright enough for lounging during date nights and evenings with friends. The room is subterranean, so I kept things on the lighter side, although a darker vibe would have worked beautifully, as well.

Four large chairs, perfect for curling up and relaxing, sit atop a square rug. We mixed in smaller cigar tables and one center table with a drop pendant for a little drama. For added style, an open shelf was included to house a few accessories and books, making this an ideal space for reading and relaxation.

I admit, I am jealous of this designated grown-up escape (and this wine collection). Not only do the Lucianis know their wine, but they cook, as well. Entertaining is the name of the game for this family, and they now can do that, and relax, in their elegant new space.

The kitchen is the hub of the house, and its design should make life easier, comfier, and, in our opinion, more chic. At J Peach Interiors, we believe it is of the utmost importance to have a kitchen design you will love for years to come.

This project involved the complete makeover of a dated kitchen. The client wanted to lighten the space, rearrange the appliances, and add more counter space and storage. We also set out to lower the peninsula island so that it was level with the other counters, thus increasing surface space to accommodate eating.

Our client worked with Queen City Audio Video & Appliances to select new Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances for the kitchen. The panel-ready Sub-Zero French Door Refrigerator includes an internal water dispenser. We ensured there was plenty of space for cooking with a Wolf Professional Gas Cooktop, a Transitional Double Oven, and even a Warming Drawer.

The cabinets, countertops, and backsplash were completely replaced. We chose a polished quartzite for the countertops, champagne bronze for the plumbing fixtures, and a honey bronze for the hardware.
