HELLO Our April publication marks the first to be released in Stellenbosch. The decision to hit the Winelands town wasn’t that difficult, seeing as Stellies is packed with guys and girls who fit our desired readership. From now on we’ll be attempting to release a magazine that can balance relevant stories for both Cape Town and Stellenbosch. We apologise profusely if this debut, bi-town issue seems more weighted to one location than the other, but it is our first attempt, and we guarantee an issue of furthered equilibrium for May. Recapping March; a month that brought us monumental music festivals, the Stormers gracing Newlands pitch, the first semester of University/college, an appeal rejection for Julius Malema, a parliament march that rivaled crowds of Woodstock 69. It’s been a fast month, and a testing task to keep up with all the happenings. You might notice we have donned a green theme for our April issue. Earth Hour is coming up, and we figured we should promote a few green lifestyle trends to show our support for what we feel is a subject to be taken seriously. As the youth culture we should create positive trends to be followed throughout the decades to come, and global warming is something we need to tackle. Some of you will now have a little holiday. Enjoy it, and drive safe. For the rest of you, get back to work.

CLIMATE CHANGE

WHICH SIDE OF THE FENCE ARE YOU ON?

The great debate on climate change has raged on since Al Gore declared that unless people were willing to change and lower carbon emission, in the face of rising CO2 levels, the consequences would be dire and catastrophic, think world killer, not just natural disaster. WORDS // ANGELIQUE REDMOND IMAGE // MANDY JANSEN So which side of the fence are you on? There are some facts, which cannot be denied; as we moved from an agricultural based economy to an industrial one we have significantly increased our carbon emission. But has that increase in carbon emission led to climate change? Naturally occurring amounts of greenhouse gases have a mean warming effect of about 33 °C. The major greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36–70% of the greenhouse effect; carbon dioxide (CO2), which causes 9–26%; methane (CH4), which causes 4–9%; and ozone (O3), which causes 3–7%. Clouds also affect the radiation balance through cloud forcings similar to greenhouse gases. Human activity since the Industrial Revolution has increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, leading to increased temperatures and an increase in the gases, which are responsible for regulating the earth’s temperature, from CO2, methane, CFC’s to nitrous oxide. The concentrations of CO2 and methane have

increased by 36% and 148% respectively since 1750. The end result is a temperature rise. And are humans to blame? Well in practical terms think of the amount of cars on the road or per household today, compared to 1970. And while methane gas (primarily a gas expunged by livestock) is a contributor, which do we have more of, farting cows or cars? So the next time you get into your luxury 8 person vehicle alone to go and buy milk from the garage ten minutes walk away, picture a 900 pound polar bear trying to balance on a piece of ice the size of a mini vw golf. Is it really that hard to recycle? Unless you really hate the planet, wouldn’t you rather just recycle, treat the planet with a little bit of respect, (after all we only have one) and then if we’re all wrong about climate change you can laugh at us. Personally I would rather plan for the worst and expect the best, than stick my head in the sand until humans trigger an ice age, think about if what have you got to lose? If we’re right : the planet, and if we’re wrong : nothing.

Tribe Coffee means enjoying space together bound by disjointed movements that sit tumbledown askew and limbs all akimbo brought together in one motion in one space at a favorite cafe with one cup of memorable coffee. KONY 2012 THE FACTS By now, you’ve had to have heard something about Kony 2012, Invisable Children, or a man running around San Diego naked, punching the street pavement and touching himself in public. The Invisable Children campaign that went viral a few weeks ago has had worldwide viewage and, of course, much criticism. There’s so much information out there, and many people don’t really know what’s true or not. If you still don’t know what I’m talking about: Kony 2012 is a viral documentary made by Jason Russell (the naked man) on behalf of well known awareness organization Invisable Children, making a call for action and bringing awareness of Joseph Kony - a Ugandan Warlord who has abused thousands of women and children, and has enslaved child soldiers as his personal army. The campaign has brought awareness of who Kony is, and has inspired people to make action of the cause and participte in a Night Street March on 20th April 2012, plastering his face on the streets of the world. Great cause... BUT do you know all the facts? We suggest you research the documentary, reception and Invisable Children - the awareness organization - before deciding where you stand.

HISTORY

Back in 2006 Sydney took a plunge into darkness and shone the first light on climate change as a combatable issue. This WWF initiative ignited a global phenomena that has seen participation grow to 5,200 cities, in 135 countries worldwide and has ushered in a new era of self-action against climate change, which further conveys the powerful message that together we can make a difference.

In 2004, WWF Australia began to look at new ways to take climate change mainstream after being confronted with serious scientific data and a campaign based on hope not fear, and the idea that everyone can take personal responsibility for the future of the planet we live on, was envisioned in 2005, with the campaign working title ‘The Big Flick’, later confirmed ‘Earth Hour’. With the release of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth’ in 2006, the world started paying attention to the issue of climate change. On 31 March 2007, Sydney, Australia, held the first’Earth Hour’ with 2.2 million locals and 2 100 businesses participating. International interest in the campaign was high, and representatives from around the world wanted to be involved. 29 March 2008, 371 cities and towns in more than 35 countries globally took part in ‘Earth Hour’ 2008. In 2009,Hundreds of millions of people in more than 4,000 cities and towns across 88 countries switched off their lights for one hour, creating a visual mandate for action on climate change effectively kick-starting the world’s first global vote. 27 March 2010 a record 128 countries and territories take part and iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas stand in darkness. Last year, 26 March, ‘Earth Hour’ continues to break records for participation with 135 countries taking part. We’re quite excited to see the numbers for this year’s Earth Hour - 31 March: 8:30pm - 9:30pm

SO MUCH MORE: Earth Hour believes that the symbolism of the hour is incredibly important in bringing people and communities together across the globe. But their aspiration from the beginning was to go far beyond the hour itself. In 2012, Earth Hour launched ‘I Will If You Will’, a platform to incentivise and inspire individuals to share their commitment to the planet with their friends, colleagues, leaders and networks. Earth Hour also encourages and promotes many other initiatives around the world, including the ‘Earth Hour City Challenge’, the ‘Earth Hour People’s Projects’ and many national and local actions that take the campaign beyond the hour.

HOW TO

EDGE DIY

@Urban_Edge_Mag

START YOUR OWN FASHION LABEL

At some point, everyone thinks of being their own boss and starting their very own business. Few are brave enough to strike out and actually do it, fewer still are successful. Throw in a worldwide recession and a couple of unemployed twenty-something-year-olds and it’s virtually impossible. Oh, did we mention that the fashion industry’s cut-throat? WORDS // KIMBERLEIGH MULLER IMAGE // HESTER JANSE VAN RENSBURG Enter Lilla Clothing. First started in November last year by two flatmates with almost no formal business or fashion experience, the company has been making waves in virtual reality. The clothing line is still in its early stages and consists of vintage pieces that are sourced and advertised on Lilla’s Facebook page. People comment and ask for the clothes and they drop it off – and get paid in the process. Simple, right? “It takes a lot of organisation, a lot of time, and a lot of effort. It’s not that easy,” Camilla says. “It sounds straightforward, start a thing on Facebook and sell your clothes. But how do you get the clothes to your customers and collect your money? What if there are 30 different items to deliver?” And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s stock to source, petrol to worry about, and because there’s no central location or boutique, there are people who ‘browse’ their stock online with the intention to buy, but never do. If it’s that much effort, you say, why can’t they just take out a loan? “We’re learning to work with money while we’re small so that when it grows, we know how to work with more capital,” Camilla says. But they are excited, as anyone starting out should be. “When you start a business,” she says, “don’t expect to make a real profit in the first few years. You have to first establish yourself. People don’t realize how hard you work and it can get very depressing. Since we started this, it’s just been work and work and work. We also put a lot of our own money into it – apart from the profit we make from the business.” The fashion industry tends to be rather stuffy when it comes to dealing with environmental and green issues, but having a business that starts off as earth-friendly is most likely to stay that way in the future. Lilla’s vintage pieces are sourced from a range of places and are mainly secondhand, things that are beautiful and have only been worn once or twice. Although Camilla does make some of the items, it’s

only what they need. And it’s this mind-set that keeps them going. “We don’t actually use any of our capital for anything at the moment,” Michelle says. “Right now we’re making nothing. Everything we make goes straight back into the business because the wider the range, the more we do, the more we need.” Starting your own fashion label is not all glamour. But it is worth it, says Michelle. “It’s a lot of fun – like having a shoot, and having to get dressed in the street! In my little car, the doors would be open, we’d be covering models, and I’m out there, too, in my bra!” Working in a partnership’s not all that either. Michelle and Camilla have huge fights over

which clothes to buy and why. But in the end, it always works out. They have plans for the near future, including an open day on the 31st of March and a trip to Japan to check out international trends. Their final word of advice in how to start your own fashion label: hard work, don’t even bother!

TIPS >> It’s hard work, and unless you commit to it, your label will not succeed. >> Having an eye for fashion is not enough. You must be confident and bold with your clothing line – think Lady Gaga meets original hipster! >> If striking out as a group, make sure your partnership is strong as it will test your friendship >> Be prepared for anything and be ready to make quick decisions on a daily basis. Flexibility is important >> It’s all about who you know. Don’t be afraid of asking for help and keep business relationships healthy. You never know when you need someone! >> A great idea always needs a good foundation. Make sure your line has the basics (storage, manpower, stock, etc.) in place before striking out. APRIL 2012

WAYS TO DECREASE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

To be honest, there are so many different ways you can reduce your carbon footprint that we could have filled all 36 pages with one monumental list. Green awareness has been the rage for quite some time now, and the points we mention here could already be common knowledge to you, but this is our green issue, so take it in and give it another mulling over in your human computer. Who knows, maybe there’ll be something in here to give you the ‘green awakening’. IMAGES // EPSOS.DE WORDS // URBAN EDGE MAG

10

DISABLE YOUR SCREEN SAVER

We thought we’d start with an easy one. Apparently a screen saver is an energy waster. Today most computers have a sleep function, which means they’ll go into sleep mode when left idle for a period of time, and this is more energy efficient than a screen saver. If you’re going to go away from your computer you might as well turn it off, but if you’re not for that then ditch the screen saver. It doesn’t even perform the function that it’s named after.

09

USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

You might be asking yourself “what public transport?” You have a sound point, we won’t dispute this. South Africans in general have never had the highly accessible bus or train systems that many of the world’s nations enjoy. However, there is now the new MyCiti Bus, a clear indication that the city of Cape Town is attempting to rectify this problem. By taking your car, you are adding double the amount of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere, as the bus will always be circulating on its route which you could be using. If you live in Stellenbosch just use a bicycle, as nothings too far away in the tranquil town, unless you like dopping out at the wine farms.

08

KEEP YOUR FREEZER FULL

By this we don’t mean go out and stock up on County Fair chicken nuggets and garlic Kiev’s, but rather fill empty bottles with water and leave them in your freezer. An empty freezer apparently uses more energy than a full one, and yes, you know some people have really taken the green passion to a new level by figuring out this fact, but it’s a relatively easy initiative to undertake, and every little action counts.

02

07

There are people out there who do their shopping daily. Whether because they can only live with freshly baked bread, or they hate to freeze their meat, they are releasing 6 times the unnecessary motor gasses into the atmosphere by going daily, when they could be going weekly! We’re not saying you have to make your video rental night on the same day you scour Checkers, but try and limit the amount of excursions you make, unless you make the trip via public transport of course.

06

04

APRIL 2012

EAT LESS MEAT

Apparently it takes a considerable amount of energy in the process of getting livestock from their adorable state on a farm, to a lovely prime cut on your plate. A study was done in the UK that proved the livestock industry’s carbon emissions could be considerably cut, by at least 30%, if the nation reduced their consumption of meat. Although it really wouldn’t feel like you are doing much to help, you would indirectly be contributing to the green cure of the planet.

UNPLUG APPLIANCES

URBAN EDGE MAG

SET YOUR WASHING MACHINE ON A LOWER TEMPERATURE

Unless you have a white shirt with an epic red wine stain, you really don’t need to wash your clothes in hot water. It takes a vast amount of energy to heat water, and a washing machine uses a fair amount of warm H2O. If you are doing a normal weekly wash, and haven’t been food fighting or spilling Jager shots all down your shirt front, then wash your clothes on a lower temp. It’ll clean your clothes to the exact same effect, and assist in saving that precious energy.

When we aren’t using the TV/DVD player, how often would we unplug them to save energy? I guess never. It seems like a petty thing to do, but if you had to actively unplug all the appliances not in use you would decrease your electricity bill by 10%, meaning you would knock a month off electricity spending off your yearly costs. The chargers, toaster, TV, computer, hair dryer etc, all draw electricity. So try it out. Saves energy and money. 10

DO YOUR WEEKLY SHOP IN ONE TRIP

01

03

05

USE ENERGY SAVING LIGHT BULBS

If you think you’re the only one who dislikes these things then look no further, because we hate them too. They give off a light that belongs in a hallway of a gloomy outdated hospital, which could be used in a scene of The Walking Dead. However, before we get carried away, they are highly efficient at saving energy. In fact, they save 50% more energy than a regular bulb, and that goes some way to saving you on your electricity bill. Trust us, if there’s an easy way of saving energy then this is the place to start.

RECYCLE If you don’t keep a plastic bag in your house or flat for recyclable goods, then you’re seriously far behind in doing your part to help the Earth’s struggling atmosphere. Recycling stops the production of new products, and puts used items to use by making them reusable. Making new products, like plastic bottles, uses a considerable amount of energy, and a large amount of fossil fuels that Earth is running short on. If there isn’t a recycle bin in your work place then push for that too. It’s basically a requisite these days.

ONLY USE A LIGHT IF NEEDED

We’re all guilty of turning on a light for whatever reason, and then leaving the scene with the light still on. If you’re scared of the dark then we can relate, but it really does use quite a large amount of energy. The whole point of Earth Hour is for every person to turn off their lights for one hour. If this seems a big ask then remember how lucky you are to even have light bulbs. Your ancestors never had the choice of turning off their lights for contributing to Earth Hour, it was really a non-negotiable.

SPECIALISED KINESEOLOGY BALANCING YOUR BODY, MIND AND SOUL “Kinesiology clears stress and balances mental energy allowing greater awareness of what is happening in our life, so that we can make clear choices and be more present, effective and enjoy more what we are doing.” - Touch for Health Pocket Book WORDS // KIRSTIN GELDENHUYS We as individuals are products of our past experiences and current situations. Our sphere of understanding and knowledge has come from our personal reactions to life’s actions. We draw up our own fears, habits and beliefs and through this we are either able to cope or not with what life throws at us and come out of a situation victorious or go down in a negative spiral, sometimes unable to come out. We develop subconscious patterns of behaviour and at times our minds become too chaotic to function at our optimum level. Now, I am in no way an expert in the incredible science that is Specialised Kinesiology but what I can gather from the numerous “sessions” I have had, is this form of healing offers an extremely powerful non-intrusive mean of analysing our current state of being and finds the exact flaws in our systems, whether it be on a mental, physical, emotional, environmental or situational level. The word “Kinesiology” is derived from the Greek word “Kinesis” meaning motion. Specialised Kinesiology is really a fusion of several forms of remedy, these being psychology, chiropractics, acupressure, medicine, massage, and quantum physics. But more than most it is strongly rooted with traditional Chinese medicine, with the understanding that the energy that runs through us is by pathways called meridians. Each meridian is responsible for fostering a particular organ or system, so it is understood that we have an individual heart meridian, lung meridian, liver meridian etc. As far as Specialised Kinesiologists are concerned, each of these meridians also house mental, emotional and spiritual systems. Therefore each emotion we are able to experience is connected to separate

12

meridian structures. These meridians have energetic flows to each muscle in our bodies. Basically, the functioning of our muscles is directly influenced by the flow of energy through the meridian, thus, each individual muscle has a direct relationship with a particular energy flow.

muscle testing protocol is really testing the brain’s response to stressors rather than actual muscle strength. The Specialised Kinesiologist is then able to look into the cause of the imbalance, and determine the solution to correct the flaws. Every “session” is different as no person is the same and the way we have all programmed ourselves is completely individual. Therefore, the correction technique used is based on what the patient needs, but essentially the Kinesiologist reprograms the patient’s brain pathways to a “better neurological option”. Coming out of a session you are able to become aware of what your learned subconscious patterns are and can therefore release and reprogram the way your mind, body and soul function, feeling healthier, more balanced, more motivated, energetic and self-directing.

WANT TO KNOW MORE? Humans are essentially self-healing beings; however, sometimes we are incapable of understanding the full issue and therefore need to seek guidance from a practitioner. Specialised Kinesiologists locate blockages in a patient’s holistic system by means of ‘muscle testing’. This entails simply placing a limb (usually an arm) in a particular position in order to isolate and employ the performance of the particular muscle. The practitioner then applies gentle pressure to the limb in order to test its ability to remain engaged. Any changes to the strength of the muscle indicate an imbalance of central energy in the meridian system. All the cells in our bodies are electrically linked to the neurology in our brain via the spinal cord and the central nervous system, so the

REUSE

Make use of the many glorious vintage shops in Cape Town and create Clothes Swapping events with friends and family.

First thing’s first, let’s distinguish between second hand and vintage. Second hand, as self explanatory as it is, is previously used clothing, while vintage can be defined as clothing from a previous era and technically is 20 or more years old. Shopping under these two categories ultimately leads to less wastage and unnecessary over production in textiles and clothing harming the environment. Trends are constantly being reinvented, reused and recycled through the years. When an item of clothing has history a sense of nostalgia tends to come into play and that’s quite exciting. Never mind that feeling of exclusivity you get when you realise how unlikely it is that someone else has that piece. We lucky Capetonians have Long Street as an incredible hub of vintage and second hand stores but they are pretty much scattered around the entire city. Here are our favourites:

SECOND TIME AROUND - 169 LONG STREET This eclectic store has been around since the early seventies and houses some of Cape Town’s oldest items. Could very well be stop number one on your vintage shopping day, be sure to set a few hours aside though, this store has a whole lot on offer.

HELLO AGAIN - 219 LONG STREET Hello Again doesn’t sell exclusively vintage, you will find some of the finest young designer fashion and jewellery that Cape Town has to offer here too. Conveniently located across the road from Second Time Around they are a store not to be missed. They also have a blog, check it out at: http://helloagainshop.blogspot.com/

EURO CLOTHING - 87a STATION ROAD, OBSERVATORY A truly fabulous selection of leather jackets and second hand imported clothing at ridiculously cheap prices. Our favourite recent finds have been an amazing 80s black leather bomber jacket and tons of print button down’s.

RECYCLE Recycled and upcycled fashion is a great way to reinvent clothing that you would otherwise have to throw away. FREE-CYCLE Promoting waste reduction, another great idea society has come up with is a process called “freecycling” whereby unwanted items are exchanged or given away online instead of being thrown out. Visit www.freecycling.org for more information on how to get involved.

RAMFEST CPT 2012 THE ONE DAY WONDER

When I heard that Ramfest (the weekend fest that I look forward to more than my own birthday) had become a one-day-Sunday event I was gutted. This seemed to be the general consensus amongst fellow ramfestarians as the complaints amassed on Ramfest’s facebook page. However, as they announced the international acts people became more forgiving and, although still skeptical, the majority became open to the idea of a one day Ramfest. WORDS // NADINE VAN EEDEN

IMAGES // URBAN EDGE MAG

With my decision to embrace the one day experience I headed to Klein Libertas on Sunday morning to catch the bus to Ramfest armed with wet-wipes and plenty of sunscreen. The bus was pretty mellow until the Monster and vodka began to flow and the phone-speaker-megaphone contraption was pumping AC/DC. In no time we had reached Ramfest and spirits were high. People flocked to the beer tent to escape the sun and grab a cold one while waiting for the bands to begin. It seemed that the fact that it was a Sunday had been forgotten on arrival and the excitement for the afternoon and night to come was tangible. The crowd grew larger and larger with each band that played and as more and more people arrived I couldn’t help but note the relative normalcy of the people at the fest. There wasn’t one large drunk man in a speedo to be found while the regular one day underage drink spillers and bikini girls were abundant. Maybe absurdity is a symptom of weekend festivals? Sabretooth, Newtown Knife Gang and Hog Hoggidy Hog got the worst of the sun and 20

heat of the afternoon yet each of them played with just as much enthusiasm as they would had they been performing in the 6 o’clock slot. Sabretooth’s 80s inspired metal music and image gel perfectly and make for a very entertaining performance. Newtown Knife Gang is fairly new on the scene but their self-titled album has received rave reviews and their song ‘Listen’ has been play listed on 5fm. NKG’s performance was stellar, especially on ‘Read Between the Lies’ and ‘To be Honest’. They proved to the crowd that they can recreate the quality of sound that their album exudes. Fokofpolisiekar and Taxi Violence are veterans of the South African Music industry and have been setting the standard for bands since 2003 and 2004 respectively. Taxi Violence tried out some new tracks on the crowd, which are apparently from their upcoming ‘party-rock’ album, and the reaction was positive. In my opinion George is one of the top entertainers in SA music (especially after seeing him stage dive in Bohemia of all places) and his performance at Ramfest was as energetic and captivating as ever. Fokofpolisiekar really

needs no review and I have yet to hear a negative comment on any of their recent performances. Their sound becomes more and more polished at each performance without losing the rawness that gives Fokof their identity (which included a stage dive by Francois). I finally gave up my spot in the shade and headed closer to the stage to watch the first international act, AWOLNATION. When they came onto the stage everyone was bouncing with excitement (or maybe that was just me?). Pre-Ramfest I think that the majority of the spectators were ‘Sail’ fans more than AWOLNATION fans. However, post-Ramfest I don’t see how one could possibly not be a fan. Their live performance surpassed the awesomeness of their album by far. Frontman Aaron Bruno, who almost looks too much like a surfer to be a rock star, is a multitalented guy. Besides being able to sing, shout and scream with the most amazing tone, he also showed off his skills on the drums during their set. Highlights were ‘Not Your Fault’, where Aaron and the band had the crowd doing some extreme fist pumping, ‘Burn It Down’ and, of course, ‘Sail’. The band really displayed their musicality during their set with lead guitarist Christopher Thorn’s impressive solo on ‘Sail’ and the dynamic of the band, who are extremely tight despite the fact that AWOLNATION only came about as the brainchild of Aaron in 2009. At this point I have to admit to the electro fans that I spent minimal time at the electro stage. By that I mean I got a ride on the back of one of the Monster mini-dirt bikes around the fest, stopped for a minute to check Netsky out and then went back to the main stage for fear of missing any more of AWOLNATION’s set. As a solace to any fans that missed out on Ramfest there are some great articles and pictures of the electro stage floating around the internet.

stage the now massive crowd shouted and screamed in excitement. In Flames opened with the beautiful guitar intro of ‘Sounds of a Playground Fading’. The wait was well worth it as their performance was flawless. At some point security had to pull people over the barrier in front of the stage because the crowd behind them was getting so rough. ‘Deliver Us’, ‘Take this Life’ and ‘Where the Dead Ships Dwell’ were personal highlights of the show. The only complaints that the fans had was that they didn’t play ‘Come Clarity’ and that they didn’t play for longer. It was truly an experience that I wanted to relive as soon as it finished. After being spoilt with two international bands already, Infected Mushroom took to the stage. The Israeli psychedelic trance three-piece had the crowd going insane and I saw some dance moves that night that I think may have scarred me for life! The drummer and electric guitarist were incredible and put DJs that simply stand behind their equipment to shame. The fact that they produce the style of music

that they do using live instrumentation is something spectacular to watch even though I’m not really a fan of their style of music. A highlight was their remix of Foo Fighters ‘The Pretender’ which is apparently going to be on their newest album, Army of Mushroom, to be released in May this year. Special mention has to be given to the dancing mushrooms in the very 90s visualisations which kept me very entertained during the set. Well who doesn’t want to see a dancing mushroom? The night drew to a close far too early for my liking and this was the moment when reality struck that I was not headed back to my tent for a short night’s sleep, crepes in the morning and a second night of fun. So feeling a little down, but still satisfied after seeing the mind-blowing In Flames and more, we headed to the bus and home with university awaiting us in the morning. Congratulations to Ramfest for proving everyone wrong and pulling off an almost flawless day. Hopefully next year we’ll be seeing you for three days rather than one!

The Narrow was up last before In Flames. Although personally not a big fan I couldn’t help but join the crowd in singing ‘Lonely lonely lonely Sunday morning…’ Their sound was definitely more suited to the fest than when they played at Synergy and the crowd at Ramfest couldn’t get enough of them. Next up was the highlight of my year… In Flames! I’m not a fan of many metal bands, but In Flames had me sold from the moment that I heard ‘My Sweet Shadow’. After waiting for what seemed to be forever for In Flames to begin due to “Health and Safety checks” the moment had come. As the band members stepped onto the APRIL 2012

FRESHLYGROUND KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS

WORDS + IMAGE // JANINE OOSTHUIZEN

Of all the fun activities and outings Cape Town has to offer, the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts is definitely a must do. Beautiful surroundings, a picnic basket and great music all adds up to give you a wonderful, relaxing Sunday afternoon experience. On 18 March it was Freshlyground’s turn to entertain families and friends with their Jazzy Afro-pop sounds. A massive crowd, some of which were still stuck on the M3 by the time the concert started, made their way to this breathtaking venue to find a spot on the soft grass banks. Freshlyground delivered a great show which perhaps started off a little slow (or maybe it was just the peaceful atmosphere), but the moment they played the upbeat tunes of their well known song ‘Fire is low’, they had the crowd dancing in front of the stage. Before long Zolani Mahola (lead vocalist) kicked off her pink sneakers and all band members were shaking it to their folksy kwela beats. They also mellowed it down a bit with a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Living In The City’ and the ever so beautiful ‘I’d Like’ in which Zolani makes it seem so easy and natural to deliver vocals with such tenderness. Of course the crowd was very delighted when the first few notes of their hit song ‘Doo Bee Doo’ were played, but it was really the anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, ‘Waka Waka’, which had almost everybody on their feet and you could definitely sense a little football nostalgia going around. What makes it so great to watch Freshlyground perform is that it is really all good vibrations. Not just their music, but you can just sense a feeling of pure joy in the way they play together.

TWO DOOR M0A3R CINEMA CLUB WORDS // ANGELIQUE REDMOND

Either all band members are really good pretenders (which I doubt) or they just absolutely love every minute of making music together. After Zolani thanked the crowd they left the stage, but as expected came back for two encores. The last daylight was disappearing behind the green slopes of the spectacular botanical garden and soon it was time to go. There was, however, still enough time for one more glass of chardonnay to finish off a lovely Sunday!

Having never heard of 5 Gum SA before, I was alerted to their presence through the rather nifty idea of marketing an amazing band and exclusive event. I am of course referring to Two Door Cinema Club. I had never heard of them, but the competition prompted me to ‘you tube’ them; they blew my brains and eardrums. I spent the next week of anticipation blasting them to the entire office at loud volumes. The night of the event was an evening that will stand out in my music experiences forever. My best friend and I stood in the queue as giant pep buses filled up with eager scantily dressed girls and skinny jean clad guys, I was guessing massive recruitment at universities. Thankfully I was saved from feeling like a parent accompanying their kids to a school disco by the appearance of a few couples easily ten years older than me. I stopped shy of walking over and hugging them. And then off we went, the bus moved away from the airport amidst whispers of the venue, some swore the CTICC others thunder city, that is until the bus took a road a lot less traveled by anyone fearing crime, into the heart of an informal settlement. There were deep breaths taken by all and a hushed silence as people stopped speculating and waited with baited breath. Then the bus pulled up to the skeletal remains of a large industrial building, the bare bones of the structure and some walls intact. We had arrived, and even though I am sure there were some very angry crack addicts out there muttering about being displaced, the venue was amazing. The outside did little to prepare you for the mind-blowing interior and set up. Whoever’s brainchild this was deserves an Emmy award for pure artistic genius. Then the real entertainment began, the bands were nothing short of orgasmic, tight, and amazing sounds reverberated through an audience that were lapping it up. Had I not needed it, I would have thrown my bra onstage and risked poking someone’s eye out with my unfettered bosoms. Ashtray Electric and Two Door Cinema Club were both so stoked to be there and it showed in their performance, the entire crowd was high on music and the energy flowing that night. Lighting, venue and world class music, the night was a resounding success. So all I have to say is thank you 5 Gum, I am a convert, never shall another gum pass my lips, and thank you for introducing me to Two Door Cinema Club, one of the hottest acts and best live acts I have seen.

FIRE THROUGH THE WINDOW MAKING TRACKS AND EMBRACING THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION The Durban-based band Fire Through The Window popped onto our radar a fair while back while at a gig in Cape Town, and we knew they had something special to share! Recently nominated for an MK Award in the hipster category, we decided to chat to our favourite ‘hipster’ band! QUESTIONS // NADINE VAN EEDEN IMAGES // KEVIN GOSS-ROSS YOU’VE SPLIT THE RELEASE OF YOUR ALBUM INTO TWO EP’S - LIVE LONG AND PROSPER. WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR THIS DECISION? Twice the fun! We feel like we get to record twice, tour twice and promote two things instead of one. Also we won’t get bored of the tunes cos in 6mnths we’ll have a bunch of fresh ones with a new release! THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA IS MAINLY DIGITAL NOW, SO MORE AND MORE BANDS ARE RELEASING THEIR MUSIC ON DIGITIAL PLATFORMS... DO YO THINK THERE IS STILL SOME VALUE IN A CD WITH THE PRINTED BOOKLET AND ALL, OR IS THE BAND EMBRACING THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION? We’re definitely embracing digital. In todays oversaturated market it’s hard enough to get the public to listen to the music let alone buy it. Yeah, it’s still cool to have a physical product for real fans but unfortunately the reality is the vast majority just aren’t gonna buy it. They’ll pirate the shit outta it though! firethroughthewindow.com

//

HAVE YOU TRIED SOME NEW THINGS ON THIS ALBUM... IT SEEMS THAT YOU’VE GROWN LEAPS AND BOUNDS LYRICALLY AND MUSICALLY SINCE ALL THESE PEOPLE ARE GOLDEN WAS RELEASED? Thanks! We sure did try hard for this one I won’t lie. We spent a lot of time crafting the songs and lyrics. That’s another good thing about an EP. You whittle your songs down to the 6 best ones. We also recorded with a new producer (Jacques du Plessis) and in a new studio ( The Audio Cabin) and we mastered in the states which I think helped the overall sound a lot. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK ON LIVE LONG? Ummmm I guess it’s a song called BONES. It looks like it’ll be the third single. It’s just a different vibe for us and I’m keen to see what people think of that one. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH LOUIS MINAAR ON THE VIDEO FOR LONG GONE? Super super cool! He is such a talent (guy) it’s ridiculous. Also he’s incredibly professional and an all round nice guy. Shit, there was even catering. What more could you want? IF YOU COULD TRADE PLACES WITH ANY OTHER PERSON FOR A WEEK, FAMOUS OR NOT, LIVING OR DEAD, REAL OR FICTIONAL, WITH WHOM WOULD IT BE? Marty McFly, Back To The Future ll.Purely for the hoverboard.

YOU HAVE GAINED HUGE EXPOSURE THROUGH THE USE OF DO, DO, DO IN AN 8TA COMMERCIAL - HAS YOUR FAN BASE INCREASED DUE TO THIS AND DO YOU THINK THAT MORE LOCAL COMPANIES SHOULD USE LOCAL MUSIC IN THEIR ADVERTISEMENTS? Yes, it’s definitely helped get the name out there a bit more. I think for the most part people know the song and not the band though! But yeah, I think local companies are turning to the music in SA much more than they used to. It’s been a serious help to the band... IF SOMEONE WROTE A BIOGRAPHY ABOUT YOU, WHAT WOULD THE TITLE BE? ‘ You just wasted R150 on this book. Suck it, fool. ‘ WILL YOU BE TOURING A LOT AFTER THE RELEASE OF LIVE LONG? WHEN CAN WE EXPECT YOU IN THE CAPE TOWN AND STELLENBOSCH AREA? We’ll be doing launch shows in Stellies on the 26 and CT on the 27 April. We’ll certainly be trying to play as much as possible but we won’t be able to just hit the road for weeks at a time like we used to... //

EYES WIDE SHUT, EARS WIDE OPEN

a5-Jungala-2012-advert.pdf 1 2012/03/23 03:51:47 PM

There’s no doubt that one of the biggest local acts around is Headroom... we caught up with this DJ/ Producer to get an inside scoop into the party starter’s view of the scene... OVER THE PAST COUPLE YEARS, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PSYTRANCE SCENE BECOMING SATURATED AND COMMERCIAL. DO THEY HAVE A POINT? There is definitely some truth to that statement but people should remember it isn’t all bad. More people equals higher attendance, which means greater profits for promoters, who will then hopefully feed that capital back into making bigger better parties. This last season has boasted some of the best production & line-ups South Africa has seen in many years. As long as promoters manage to keep their events & lineups true to the ‘psy’ culture & spirit, then all will work out in my opinion. I say embrace it as our scene has solid foundations!

LET’S GET TECHNICAL... WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT STUDIO SET UP? AND IS THERE ONE PART, BE IT A CERTAIN PIECE OF SOFTWARE, THAT YOU CAN’T DO WITHOUT WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING TUNES? I have a Quad Core desktop PC at the heart of my studio, running Steinberg’s ‘Cubase 6’ as my main DAW. I also have Ableton ‘Live 8’ & Traktor ‘Pro 2’ on there for prepping my Live & DJ shows. I use a whole range of soft synths & effects from companies like Spectrasonics, U-HE, Native Instruments, Soundtoys, FabFilter to name a few. My monitors are ADAM P11 A’s with the ADAM ‘Sub 8’ & these are definitely something I cannot do without... I am also lucky enough to have a Minimoog Voyager ‘Electric Blue Edition’ at my disposal thanks to a kind friend. CM

YOU HAVE A SIDE PROJECT ENTITLED ARTELLIGENT. FILL US IN ON MORE ABOUT THIS AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THIS PROJECT IN 2012? The idea behind this project is to open up another avenue of music, namely techno. I have been Dj’ing a fair bit and am slowly writing some music under this alias but my Headroom project has been rather demanding of late, so I’m way behind where I wanted it to be by now. My hope is to have a handful of releases under this project by the end of the year and then tackle it full on. MORE AND MORE DJ’S ARE GOING DIGITAL WITH CONTROLLERS AND COMPUTERS. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS, AND WILL WE SEE HEADROOM FOLLOWING THIS TREND ANYTIME SOON? I am all for it to be honest & I am already a digital Dj. I use a Macbook Pro with Ableton ‘Live 8’ for my live shows & Traktor ‘Pro 2’ for DJ’ing. My controller is a Native Instruments ‘X1’ which works well with both programmes & performances. I will be expanding my controller department soon though. The reason I support this is that it allows you to so much more that just mix tracks. Looping features, effects and sampling are far more comprehensive with these programmes, allowing you to perform sets that are unique each time & more interesting from a listeners perspective. Plus the portability factor with the above mentioned gear is essential when travelling over seas. Most of my music is digital anyways so why fight it. One big negative of this digital revolution however has been Mp3, which sadly means most DJ’s are playing out below standard audio. IF YOU HAD THE OPTION OF REMIXING A JUSTIN BIEBER TRACK AND USING IT AS THE OPENING SONG OF A SET, OR BE TASKED WITH CLEANING THE TOILETS AT AN INDIAN FOOD EXPO, WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE? I’d take option C…. suicide ;) 5 TRACKS THAT ARE DOING IT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW? PIXEL & FREEDOM FIGHTERS – Trick & Treat; KILLAWATTS & WAIO – Wake Up; WAIO & S-RANGE – Macheen; AVALON & HEADROOM – Mind F**k; LOGICA – Pow Pow Deep

ALBUM REVIEWS

FIRE THROUGH THE WINDOW LIVE LONG

Fire Through the Window have outdone themselves and shown a lot of growth on their EP, Live Long, musically and lyrically. The band chose to release two EPs this year rather than a full album and the second EP, Prosper, will be released later this year. FTTW are known for their carefree music which is usually about the joys of love and life. However, on this EP they seem to give in to the fact that life and love is a little more complicated than picnics and polaroid photos with lyrics like “wearing thin we sink more than we swim”, while still managing to keep their feel good vibe. Their use of dynamics is extremely effective on ‘Give Take’, where the powerful bridge fades into a stripped down chorus, builds back up and explodes into the chorus again. Vocalists Sinead and Marcs voices complement each other on this album even more than on previous tracks and one can really hear that a lot of thought has been put into where each of their voices fits best and where to harmonise on each track. It was definitely a good idea for FTTW to work with producer Jacques de Plessis on this album and have it mastered in the states because, in my opinion, Live Long will be their defining moment as a band. Although I’ll have to revise that statement once Prosper is released. Key tracks are their first single ‘Long Gone’ as well as ‘Bones’ and ‘Give Take’.

BICYCLE THIEF AMMUNITION Bicycle Thief’s long awaited EP, Ammunition is hard not to enjoy and has already received a lot of positive feedback. A few of the tracks start off reminding you of other bands but as the songs progress they take on their own identity. The verses of ‘IO’ would fit perfectly on Arcade Fire’s ‘The Suburbs’ while ‘Anthem for a Miracle’ brings Mumford and Sons to mind. Also, a few of the guitar and drum parts of ‘Goodbye Ian Curtis’ are reminiscent of aKING’s ‘Against All Odds’ album. Vocalist Tim’s voice seems to easily adapt to suit the style of each of their songs perfectly. I suppose the question here is who wouldn’t want to listen to an album infused with the sounds of the bands mentioned as well as the original sound of Bicycle Thief. The best thing about this EP is that it’s available for free download on www.bicyclethief.co.za, although I do always miss a good physical album cover. APRIL 2012

SICK CINDY

INTERVIEW

Don’t let the name fool you; the only sick thing about this band is how fierce their music is. The band consists of Dave Hercules (yes it’s a real surname) on bass, Benni Sweet (Like chocolate?) on guitar, Joe Danger, (buy him a drink and ask him to explain..) on drums, and last but certainly not least Cat Coxon with fiery vocals. The band based in Johannesburg, started awing crowds with their unique and energetic rock n roll in 2010, I had the pleasure of asking them a few questions and I am not sure who enjoyed the answers more, me or them…So without further ado, see what they had to say. WORDS // ANGELIQUE REDMOND

Riot Squad, this is a name that will very soon be the talk of the town. If you haven’t heard this amazing DJ duo then where have you been hiding? Mike Kelly and Kyle Maclean started Riot Squad August 2010 and with their proud notion of minimal marketing, and the opinion of if you want them, you’ll book them – no selfselling, and they have made a name for themselves, and they’re spreading like wildfire throughout Cape Town. With their music, before you know it; your body is bouncing, blood boiling and hands in the air like a crazy person to the “hard, energetic” multigenre beats they produce. They are a team that prides themselves on being perfectionists with their music, taking their time to produce only the best. Which has clearly worked in their favour as they have played in huge venues such as The Assembly, Trinity, the new spot Dragon Room and the Ministry of Sound New Years’ Party for 2012, to name but a few. If that isn’t tempting you to show some dirty love for this amazing duo then the fact that they have recently been invited to headline at La Vida in Durban is sure to sway you. With Netsky and Neroas some of their many influences we are sure to see bigger parties and crazier tracks coming from the guys. But to a more realistic tune, the guys admit to the hard work and tons of effort they’ve needed to put in. Starting at the bottom like any beginners to any music scene, they have endured the “graveyard” shifts where only 2 people are left standing on the dance floor at a club and have risen to being the headline at parties such as Discotheque and Butterbox. What makes Riot Squad so special? They play for the crowd, not just themselves. They “feed off the crowd’s energy” and their “set is determined by what the crowd wants” which I can’t say for many DJ’s as they seem to only want to play what they want, which in our opinion, is just nonsense. Keep a look out for Riot Squad Tracks on beatport.com. Follow them on Facebook and find out where their latest and upcoming gigs are. The focus of their music for now; is electro, but they have plans to branch out into other things, and quite frankly have the want, need and passion for bigger things for themselves. It’s refreshing to interview a musical duo who despite being young, have ambition and know what it means to make a name in their industry. Working to achieve this, Riot Squad book between one to as many as four gigs in a week, currently are in studio working on new material, but a lot of their music is out on the web. A personal favourite song from them has to be ‘Call To Arms Vol 1’ and ‘Deep Filth - My City By Night Remix’ of theirs, one word – deepgrindingsexyfilthelectrolove. It’s pretty damn hard not to enjoy what they got. Our taste in music is diverse, but as close to perfect as they come. If you don’t like what they got, it’s very possible there is something wrong with you. Riot Squad will take over. Whether you like it or not. facebook.com/riotsquadsa // youtube.com/riot squad south africa @riotsquadsa // soundcloud.com/riotsquadsouthafrica 26

WHERE DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME FOR THE BAND? Joe – After an unfortunate event that lead to a bad music review, we had to change our name. Dave came up with ‘Sick Cindy’. The alliteration was catchy and it’s ‘chant-able’ so we all agreed to keep it. DID YOU RECEIVE MORE ATTENTION CAUSE YOU HAVE A GIRL IN THE BAND? Bennie – Yes, tits get you everywhere, everyone likes tits. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC SCENE? Dave – Rock n Roll isn’t dead! Bennie – It sucks. Cat – We need more venues. Joe - And support for local up and coming bands are also limited. We need a mindshift. WHAT ROLES (OUTSIDE OF INSTRUMENT/VOCALS) DOES EVERYONE PLAY IN THE BAND? Joe is the responsible one. Bennie is the manager/booking agent/ jailbird. Joe – that’s why we haven’t played many gigs recently! Dave’s only job is to play the bass and look like many deceasedrockstars. Cat is there for public relations and marketing Bennie – Yeah! Tits. WHAT HAS SICK CINDY GOT PLANNED THIS YEAR? We started recording our album in the middle of March and we’ll be doing a release tour. Cat – We want to play Oppikoppi! Dave – We’re going to be doing a lot of old school rock n roll! WAS IT HARD TO BREAK INTO THE MUSIC SCENE IN SA AND WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ASPIRING MUSICIANS Dave – The scene is still hard to break into! Joe – Don’t do it for the money. Do it for the chicks. I mean the music. Do it for the music. WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU? Bennie – I wake up and piss rock n roll. And if this is what they’re like in print, imagine them live… So get off your asses and go and check them out, they promise to be a band that will literally ROCK YOU off your feet, get you shaking some ass while their music makes sweet love to your ears.

PHOTOGRAPHER

A regular collaborator with Urban Edge Mag, Melissa’s all about taking every opportunity to photograph anything and everything - and has been impressing everyone with her mad skills. She makes up half the team of Gilmoregirlworks - along with writer Jackie Cockshott - and we thought we’d share her with you! WHAT IS GILMORGIRLWORKS ALL ABOUT? Cameras. Writing. Magazines. Art. Love. Fun. Bands. Music. Gigs. Parties. Events. Photos. Smiles. Life. Meeting new friends & constantly learning and being challenged with new projects.

WHAT WOULD YOUR FIRST THOUGHT BE, IF YOU LEARNT YOU WON THE LOTTERY? STUDIO! I’m one of those day dreamers, that not ‘if’ but ‘when’ I win the lotto, the first thing I’d do is set up my own independent studio – with all the best gadgets and set up in the most beautiful space I could find, to work from for the photography side and a creative space for the writing side of our work.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS. Creative. Workaholic. Lover-of-life. WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING FROM GILMOREGIRLWORKS IN THE FUTURE? Hopefully more photos, haha, more reviews, a job offer or two wouldn’t hurt. But seriously, just more, and getting better. And hopefully some more studio work in the near future.

IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO READERS ON HOW TO BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER, WHAT THREE TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE THEM? Personally, 3 things I try work on, to be unique, or things that I’ve come to realize as a starter, you don’t need the best camera - a camera only takes you so far, its WHAT IS YOUR FAVOUITE THING TO learning to use your eyes, see an angle, a PHOTOGRAPH AND REVIEW? light, a movement, a moment, an emotion To photograph, people, children mostly, they or something and catch that... Secondly, have such a raw beauty and innocence, the understand what you’re shooting, and why, child-like fun and emotion is real, simple and always have an idea of what message and honest. To review would be bands, gigs, or vibe you want to have come across n parties, events and such, it’s fun, I get to those pictures! Thirdly, Never stop learning. meet some amazing people, listen to some You may be good at something, but there is of the most musically talented people and do always someone better, and there is always what I love while my subject does what they something more you can learn and add too love – and you can see it in the pictures. or take away from your own work. melissacarmenkelly@gmail.com 28

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU HAD A TIME MACHINE? I’d travel throughout the ages, and go on the most epic shoot adventures imaginable! Trojan times in the town squares, the Coliseum in its glory with the warriors... But I’d go forward too, and see what was in store, probably cheat in the lottery too so I could win and build my studio. Haha. IF YOU COULD SPEAK TO ONE TYPE OF ANIMAL, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I haven’t got a clue, do babies count? Imagine being a baby whisperer... people everywhere would flock to my doorstep to ask me what’s wrong with their baby, and why it won’t stop crying, I’d be like “she doesn’t dig your perfume!” haha! If babies don’t count – then probably Turtles, they’re one of my favourite animals, and they always look so chilled – I’d want to know their vibe. IS THERE A PHOTOGRAPHER YOU ADMIRE WHO INSPIRES YOU? There have been plenty throughout the years and I love them for different reasons, but I must say a favourite is David Bailey. He is known to be a bit controversial... I love his angles... his portraitures are so simple in appearance but are so hard to achieve.

STELLENBOSCH REDISCOVERING THE WINELANDS TOWN

“Where is the information office?” I ask the confused looking woman behind the counter in broken Afrikaans. I know she is Afrikaans because she was cackling away in the language with one of her customers when I walked in - that and she works in a place called ‘Oom Samie se winkel’. I had wandered into the shop because of the intriguing smell of ancient newspapers and cheap imported syrup that wafted out of its doors. WORDS AND IMAGES // KATHERINE VERHOEVEN Now, regretting I had not paid more attention to Mev. Van Vuuren in Afrikaans class, I was stuck in this wonderland of a shop in a half conversation with a woman who looked as though she resented my existence.

of the five o’clock sun this view makes me dream of a simple life, sitting here every evening with the bowl of a wineglass resting in my palm, doing nothing. There are so many vineyards in Stellenbosch, all uniquely special, that it is impossible to take a wrong turn when deciding which ones to visit.

This curio stockpile, including antique typewriters and expired looking sweets, is a hoarder’s paradise and is one of many brilliant anomalies dotted around Stellenbosch. Strolling along Dorp Street you can dip into any one of the shops or just look around at the Victorian and Cape Dutch architecture and be transported back into the small town’s rich history. Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by Simon van der Stel, the governor of the Cape Colony. Here he built a small but abundant agricultural community. It is now home to over 100 000 residents. The student town is only a 40 minute drive outside of Cape Town along the N2. Once you arrive almost everything is within walking distance so you can park your car and just go exploring. Stellenbosch boasts the oldest and most well known wine route in South Africa. For me the first stop on this tour had to be Spier Wine Estate, which also homes The Cheetah

and Wild Bird Sanctuary. A mere R10 entrance fee will grant you a look at these regal animals and will go towards keeping them looked after and fed. Next I set off to Asara Wine Estate. The courtyard here overlooks plummeting fields of grape vines that blanket the earth until Simonsberg mountain breaks out of them as if coming up for air. Bathed in the yellow

Night time is when sleepy Stellenbosch really gets kicked out of bed. The student town is full of bars and clubs brimming with youth. Aandklas is great for a taste of how the locals live with oversized food, live South African music and cheap drinks. From there you can stumble down the road, as I did, to the Mystic Boer which, as its name suggests, is rather strange and extremely Afrikaans but oh so very friendly. After a few Mal Piet’s (the R11 box wine sold at this sophisticated establishment) you are easily welcomed into the Maties brotherhood. This tight knit but diverse town is the ideal getaway spot for a low maintenance day trip or relaxed weekend away. It is the town where you can do everything or you can do nothing and still be happy. It is where the only decisions to be made are “where to next” and “do I really need that bottle of blue sand”. All you need to bring along is a friend and perhaps a dictionary. APRIL 2012

SUPERFOODS

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Superfoods are foods that are extremely rich in essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals. They largely contribute to overall nutritional value. They are full of anti-oxidants and help to protect and fight against countless diseases. Superfoods also help to re-mineralise the body, which minimizes the craving unhealthy rich foods. This helps the body regulate back to a healthy lifestyle. WORDS // ROBYN JACKA

The idea of a “superfood” has been supported since the 1980s, but it remained relatively on the fringe of the health food community. It was in 2004, when Stephen Pratt, M.D. published the book Superfoods Rx, did the word superfood become a common phenonomen. Pratt’s definition of a superfood is a “nutritional powerhouse food that can help extend your life span and help prevent or reverse some diseases of aging such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, dementia, and certain cancers”.

OUR TOP TEN SUPERFOODS 1 QUINOA is known as the “Miracle Grain”, although it is

technically a seed. This is because it contains more nutrients than most seeds. It is a source of protein that contains a complete set of essential amino acids. This makes it a dynamite tissue and muscle-builder. 2 GARLIC is an excellent cancer fighter. It has abilities to prevent development of cancers of the breast, colon, skin, prostate, stomach and oesophagus. It does this by stimulating the immune system by encouraging the growth of natural killer cells. 3 OLIVE OIL (the extra-virgin variety) is rich in beneficial monounsaturated fats. Its fatty acids and polyphenols reduce inflammation in cells and joints. 4 CHILLIES not only stimulate the metabolism but also act as a natural blood thinner and help release endorphins. Chilis also have lots of beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin-A in the blood and fights infections 5 GOJIBERRY is a Himalayan berry. They are known for their use in treating diabetes, hypertension, malaria, fever, cancer and other illnesses. Goji berries have more vitamin C than some oranges and more beta-carotene than carrots. 6 YOGHURT provides protein to the muscles. It also has probiotics that boost your immune system as well as keeping your digestive tract healthy. 7 BEANS are full of protein and assist in feeding your muscles. They are also energy-boosting carbs that contain lots of fiber and cancer-fighting antioxidants. 8 CHIA SEEDS contain high amounts of antioxidants. They re high in fiber which can regulate bowl movements. They also reduce the risks of cardiovascular disease, colon cancer, and diabetes. 9 AVOVADO contains all the fats that are good for your body. They also fuel production of anti-wrinkle collagen. 10 TOMATOES have a high lycopene content can help protect against degenerative diseases. 30

Some foods in this category are pumpkin seeds, blueberries and raspberries.

BEE SUPERFOODS This category includes by-products made by bees. These include honey and bee pollen which are known to assist in fighting stress, fatigue and insomnia. They also contain vital nutrients for healthy skin and hair.

DHL STORMERS DANCERS QUESTIONS // URBAN EDGE MAG

IMAGE // JEAN-PIERRE MARITZ

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT BEING A CHEERLEADER? It’s pretty amazing to perform in front of a crowd of about 40 – 60 000 people and also such a privilege for us to be so close to the action every game supporting the DHL Stormers. We love it! WHO IS THE FRIENDLIEST PLAYER IN THE DHL STORMERS TEAM? Siya Kolisa is by far the friendliest, always giving us a nod or smile hello. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CHEERING, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? We are all professional dancers and performers working in the industry, so we are mostly kept busy with dancing, musical theatre, TV commercials and various other corporate performances. We all take class and gym regularly in order to keep up our technique and physique. A few of us also teach dancing and in our spare time we love surfing, yoga and playing guitar hero. (If anyone’s up for a challenge let us know?) WHICH GAME HAVE YOU HAD THE MOST FUN AT AND WHY? We have such fun at all the games, but we think that the first game of the season is always pretty special. Mostly because of all the hype and excitement surrounding it! This year the game was completely sold-out and DHL went all out and had planes fly over the stadium too! WHAT IS THE BEST DESTINATION YOU’VE TRAVELLED TO (LOCALLY) AND WHY? We had a lot of fun on our trip to Jozi last year when the Lions Dancers challenged us to a dance-off! We won, of course, but there were no hard feelings! (Check out a video clip of the dance-off challenge on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/pages/DHL-Stormers-Dancers) WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE... Famous! Jokes… Most of us dreamt of being professional dancers so we’re all pretty lucky! Also, our very own dance captain (former SA Latin Dance Champion) recalls a time when she would go watch the rugby and think how much fun it would be to be one of the cheerleaders…

STOP HUNGER NOW SA HOPE AGAINST HUNGER

When we discuss hunger in South Africa, most of the talk is around statistics like the fact that over 3.3 million children face food insecurity daily, yet few of us know where to start in combating the problem. Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa hopes to change that. WORDS // THEO MASELOANYANE/ STOP HUNGER NOW “The Stop Hunger Now SA Meal Packaging programme aims to create a fun and engaging event experience for people looking to play their part in ending hunger,” explains Nathan van Niekerk, local Branch Manager for Stop Hunger Now SA. “Through an assembly line process, a team of 40 volunteers can package 10 000 meals in just two hours. Meal packaging events are conducted by volunteer groups of all ages from businesses, churches, schools and other community organisations.” The charity hosts a public packaging event every second Saturday at venues across the peninsula, Second Saturday against Hunger, where more than 100 volunteers congregate each month to package meals for its Early Childhood Development Connect (ECD Connect) programme. National Strategic Projects Manager, David Jacobs describes the programme: “ECD Connect aims to distribute food to underresourced preschools in the neediest

areas of our city in a way that promotes development and empowerment rather than dependency and entitlement. For each box of food (worth about R400) that we give, the preschool has to put R100 out of the money that would have spent on food into some development activity in their preschool, for example, improving safety by buying a fire extinguisher, or putting the carers through proper ECD courses approved by the National Qualification Framework. Volunteer field officers visit the preschools each month to deliver the food and check up on the progress to ensure regular progress. In this way, we aim to give a hand up, not a hand out.” Stop Hunger Now SA is especially appealing to local business. If 100 companies this year each sponsor and host a packaging event of 10 000 meals or more this year, which could be done over an extended lunch-time or at the end of the day as a team building event, the organisation will be able to supply 1 000 000 meals through the ECD Connect

programme, enough to reach the neediest 10% of preschools in our city. Companies like Old Mutual, Pick n Pay, Pioneer Foods and Foschini are already active supporters, as well as local radio stations KFM and CapeTalk. Life is a collection of opportunities and Stop Hunger Now SA’s volunteers and sponsors play a pivotal role in offering a vital opportunity to children in our City in the form of a daily meal and education, which can open up the possibilities to an abundant life. We all need people in different degrees throughout our lives, so take up the challenge and become the person who gives a needy child the opportunity to have a full tummy to concentrate, learn and ultimately create a better life of endless opportunities. Join Stop Hunger Now SA and other volunteers at their next event: Saturday, 14 April - shifts start at 11am and 12:30pm, at Lions Community Centre, Alexandra Street, Parow.
