UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES The UP was established on 18 June 1908 by Act No. 1870 “to provide advanced instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences and arts, and to give professional and technical training to every qualified student regardless of age, sex, nationality, religious belief, or political affiliation.” The first three academic units organized were the Colleges of Fine Arts, Medicine and Surgery, and Agriculture. Throughout its history, UP played a leading role in responding to the needs of the nation, stressing academic excellence and quality learning. This role finds expression in the University’s principal functions, namely, instruction, research and community (extension) service. UP has seven (7) constituent universities (CU) and one (1) autonomous college based in the cities of Quezon, Manila. Davao, Baguio, Cebu and in the provinces of Laguna and Iloilo. 1. UP Diliman is the University’s flagship campus. It offers arts and sciences programs as well as professional programs such as engineering, law and accounting. It also has a campus in San Fernando, Pampanga. On 23 April 1982, UP Diliman was declared as a CU and started its operation as a CU on April 26 of the same year. 2. UP Los Baños started out as the College of Agriculture in 1909. It is one of the first units to be organized after UP’s founding in 1908. In 1972, the College of Agriculture evolved into a CU. 3. UP Manila is the country’s center of excellence in the health sciences, including health professional education, training and research. Originally established in 1 December 1905 as the Philippine Medical School and later called as the UP College of Medicine and Surgery in 10 June 1907. Again, it was renamed as the Health Sciences Center in 17 June 1967 and declared as autonomous member on 24 January 1979. In 23 March 1983, UP Manila was created as the 2nd CU of the UP System. a) In 1976, the University established the Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) in Tacloban, Leyte which was transferred in Palo, Leyte and renamed as the School of Health Sciences (SHS) in 1989. It aims to develop communityoriented health workers who would return to render service in the underserved places of origin from where they were recruited.
