TASTE OF BODEN BODEN IS A WELCOMING CITY WITH A CULTURAL BREADTH. THIS IS ESPECIALLY NOTICED IN OUR WIDE SUPPLY OF RESTAURANTS; WITH FLAVORS FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

A LUNCH IN THE SUN During a nice and sunny shopping day in the city, we highly recommend a break for lunch at Centrumtorget. On different terraces you can enjoy flavors from the Mediterranean, China and Sweden. If we look beyond the center square you’ll find even more flavors that tickles nicely on the tongue. Whether you’re looking for freshness or spicy heat; you’ll find French, Japanese, American and Thai flavors, to name just a few. If you rather enjoy a lunch in the park, we recommend that you order takeaway and enjoy your meal at Kvarnängen; beautifully located by the lake Bodträsket. A DINNER WITH LAKE VIEW When the evening sun shines over Boden and reflecting in the water, it is the beachside restaurants that tempts both tourists and locals the most. With or without lake view; it’s the downtowns meat restaurants that attract. Here you can, among other things, dine in Boden’s oldest house or in true spirit of the 50’s. If you’d rather have a freshly baked pizza you’re never luckless in Boden; the city is full of pizzerias. TASTE OF SWEDISH LAPLAND Some of the city restaurants offers our exotic flavors, but if you’re looking for the genuine, holistic experience you should visit the countryside restaurants. A few miles north of the city center you have the idyllic communities Sörbyn and Harads; with ingredients and flavors from the local area.

The regulated Lule River and its valley offer a range of cultural experiences. The forest, the river, the iron ore and the salmon have been important to the valley for a long time. Here you will find several archaeological remains from the early Stone Age. The regulation of the river has changed the nature but despite this, it is a majestic river valley.

TIPS!

Fortress of secrets In a bygone era, when Sweden was one of the most militarized countries in the world, the Boden Fortress was built. One of the ten largest military construction projects ever built. The fortress was intended, and even became to be so powerful that it deterred both the Soviet Union, Russia and Germany during the two world wars. BEFORE THE MAIN LINE THROUGH NORTHERN

northern Sweden wasn’t considered as a great value. Once the fortress was finished in 1894, Sweden suddenly had access to the huge amount of natural resources found here. A great value for our country - a great value to defend. To protect our wealth the construction of Boden Fortress began in 1901 and was completed in time for the First World War. SWEDISH LAPLAND WAS BUILT,

A LAVISH MILITARY SECRET

The fortress forms a belt around Boden and consists of five heavy mountain forts, three smaller fortifications and some artillery batteries. If we include all buildings of importance to the fortress, it totals them to 1200 pcs. This majestic work is so secret that it is barely noticeable, but if you look carefully out of the mountains that surrounds Boden, you can glimpse the forts watching over our city. Back then the whole city was a military area. At all entry points, there were large signs that told foreign citizens that they

weren’t welcome here. At night time the forts were guarded by guard dogs that ran loose in the moats. Nobody were meant to have access to the secrets and treasures that were stored here. One of them was a part of Sweden’s gold reserve and it was preserved in Degerbergsfortet 1941-1982. A SPY EXPOSES THE SECRETS

The secrets came to be invaded by one of the biggest spy scandals; the Stig Bergling affair. Stig worked as a spy for the Soviet Union and revealed the room positions of the mountain. This led to high costs for reconstructions and changing of the defense plans. 1979, Stig Bergling was sentenced to life in prison for aggravated espionage. OPENING OF BORDERS

Mjösjöfortet ended in 1978 because of cracks in the mountain and between 1992 and 1998 the other forts was phased out. The city of Boden was opened again to the public and the military history is now a major tourist attraction in Boden.

RÖDBERGSFORTET Was the final fort that was taken out of service 1998. All equipment and furnishings remain, showing how the fort was used in everyday life and how it was meant to serve in combat. Follow the guide deep into the mountain and listen to many exciting stories. rodbergsfortet.com BODEN’S FORTRESS SECRET PLACES A guided bus tour that takes you to previous defense secrets such as the Balloon Hall, the Radio bunker and the fort Degerbergsfortet. rodbergsfortet.com DEFENCE MUSEUM At Defence Museum you get to know more about the role that Sweden had in world politics both in peace and times of unrest. And here are the Swedish armed forces added into a larger perspective. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions and lectures. forsvarsmuseum.se HAVREMAGASINET The Oat Warehouse is one of the largest art galleries in Sweden and shows exhibitions of contemporary art that deals with current international themes. In this impressive and historic building, there is also the opportunity to see the exhibition about how The Oat Warehouse served as grain storage to that time’s vehicles, the horses. havremagasinet.se

SUMMERS THAT COUNTS

THE CAMPSITE’S OPPORTUNITIES

Together, both old and new, guests creates summers worth remembering; summers they want to relive. Therefore, many are quick to book and secure their camping spot for the next summer.

The area is like a separate city within the city. At the shop during the summer you will find freshly baked bread every morning, a basic selection of food, camping equipment and of course - ice cream in big loads. The days you let the grill rest, you can always enjoy a nice meal in the restaurant. The main attraction, and the family’s favorite, at the campsite is the outdoor swimming facility. Here children can play in the water while the parents are sunbathing.

THE CENTRAL SUMMER HOME

The campsite is one of Sweden’s largest central campsites. Only a short walk from the campsite you can feel the pulse of Boden. As close as you are to the city; as close to the nature you are. Around the corner the country side with scenic walking paths along the water awaits. At Boden Camping & Pool, you can stay in cottages, caravans or tents.
