Steel windows and screens deliver style to enhance interior decor. Strong yet comparatively slim steel frame sections are well recognised amongst architects for offering excellent light transmission, while the slender sightlines are also ideal for allowing windows to “bring the outdoors in.” However, contemporary systems available from members of the Steel Window Association (SWA) can also play a pivotal role in influencing interior fitouts. The unexpected property boom from the pandemic included people adding extensions or improving their homes and saw SWA members responding to high demand for both classic and contemporary steel windows, doors and interior screens. In fact, the latter has proved ideal for creating home offices or subdividing living spaces without significantly cutting light reaching deep plan areas; while introducing an aesthetic often described as industrial but also sophisticated. Getting the best from these versatile, high-performance systems does, though, require careful consideration of both potential suppliers and between the multiple systems available which offer a choice of performance as well as appearance. Ethan Blackman, Contracts Coordinator for long-established SWA member, Cotswold Casements, comments, “In terms of the way projects are specified, normally we get clients (property 4

Home Designer & Architect

owners) being directed to visit our showroom by their design consultants once the decision to utilise steel frames has been made, so that they can decide on items like ironmongery or type of opening light.” “While a lot of our clients have already decided that they want the slim sections and large pane size that steel windows offer, they still want to view the past projects to help visualise how their own properties might turn out. There are a lot of nice-looking buildings on our website including commercial buildings! Normally they will send us their architects’ drawings detailing what they are trying to achieve. We will then respond with CAD drawings and a quote.” “We’ve also invested in a new CRM system which enables everyone involved in a contract, including the client and our production team, to keep track. Plus, we have new window making software – all of which helps improve the customer journey, and the turnaround time.” Interestingly, there is a perception in the market that the vast majority of steel doors and windows are produced in black, but while it is a popular colour, Cotswold Casements is one of the SWA members seeing a lot of interest in Anthracite and other shades of grey, as well as brighter colours, like Cotswold Green, white and even the stark ‘Industrial Patina’ finish. The latter is proving particularly popular for warehouse and barn conversions, along with heritage buildings generally. Property owners and professionals can use the “Find a member” facility on the SWA website to identify a manufacturer in their locality or offering the particular area

of speciality that their project requires, in order to obtain a steel window package produced to a high standard which will be correctly installed. The SWA offers UK wide coverage with member companies able to carry out the full range of contracts from the repair and restoration of heritage windows through to the installation of major fenestration packages in contemporary commercial, residential and other types of developments. Vogue Vibes from Keller Kitchens Keller has introduced Vogue Vibes; a modern kitchen where elegance and sophistication meet. The nude tones create a soft, calm atmosphere in one of the busiest areas in the home. The units, pictured here in the silk gloss lacquer shade latte, combine beautifully with the bronze handles. A focus point of this Keller kitchen is the island. With sleek lines and two levels, it is the perfect place for guests to gather around. The lower part of the island also lends itself for seasonal styling – such as flowers or decorations. Pictured behind the cooking area is a space created for cookbooks, chopping boards and other accessories. This was made in the same material as the worktop, with a back splashback in silk gloss lacquer shade, blush. Keller is well known for offering the widest range of colours (2,050 NCS) and finishes in the kitchen furniture market – along with a vast range of cabinet options, all produced by the most sustainable means possible. The company is proud to be a Carbon Neutral kitchen manufacturer since 2017 and is now on the way to becoming Carbon Negative. For further information, please visit www.kellerkitchens.com.

ILIV SELECTED TO CREATE THE ICONIC DINING AREA AT LUCKY CAT, GORDON RAMSAY’S NEW RESTAURANT IN MANCHESTER.

ILIV is proud to have been selected for the interior design scheme for Gordon Ramsay’s first major restaurant venture in Manchester the Lucky Cat. Located a 100 King Street in the iconic Art Deco Grade II listed building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and built in 1935; originally the Midland Bank, this castle-like building is sometimes known as the ‘King of King Street’. London based design agency Russell Sage Studio, specialists in commercial and hospitality interior design, were the creative brains behind this unique project. The restaurant spans three floors and includes distinctive and quirky elements such as offering private dining in the underground bank vault, there are two additional private dining rooms, a bar and mezzanine for drinks plus the main restaurant on the ground floor. 10

Home Designer & Architect

Leading British fabric manufacturer, ILIV were the ideal partner for this project. For this latest restaurant in the Gordon Ramsay Restaurants group the designers wanted to recreate the atmospheric and intimate style of Tokyo’s 1930’s drinking dens and “Kissa” jazz bars. For this they chose luxurious velvet fabrics from ILIV’s Hampton collection for the dining chairs, booths, and back seating in the main restaurant in the rich Blackberry colourway.

The design blends the building’s Art Deco architectural heritage with 1930s Japanese styling. Diners can enjoy Asian-inspired cuisine in luxuriously eclectic surroundings. The buildings soaring arched windows are echoed in the intricate Art Deco detailing and lighting of the bar and dining areas. In contrast to the high ceilings and airy feel of the interior, the use of lavish textiles and contemporary lighting bring a cosy, intimate feel to the banquettes, drinking areas and opulent dining vaults. Unveiled in June 2023, the stunning interior is the fusion of grand Art Deco style with intimate lighting and splendour that ensures an exciting experience for the diner. As the trend for Scandinavian design continues to dominate the interiors market, the kitchen is placing new emphasis on using complementary products that create a more natural look and feel. Our new Pronteau Scandi-X instant hot water tap has been designed to emulate the same characteristics found in a Scandinavian home so that UK customers can now experience filtered cold and steaming hot water from a tap, which is designed in the same style as their Scandi home décor.” Designed with 4 IN 1 functionality (hot, cold, filtered cold and 75-98º steaming hot) the new Pronteau Scandi-X by Abode offers the kitchen and utility room a complete solution for the contemporary wash zone: Scandi-X STYLE •

Minimalist design: Distinct monobloc tap design with organically inspired silhouette, which is minimalist by design, features natural materials and increases functionality.

3x Trend Finishes: Available in Matt White, Matt Black and Scandi Grey.

Original style: Dual lever handles made of FSC® Approved Beechwood, which are unique to Abode

High quality: Pronteau taps are made in Italy from the highest quality European Brass for greater longevity, product versatility and assurance.

Scandi-X SPEC •

2-stage safety handle: Filtered cold and steaming hot water is accessed using the 2-stage safety handle on the left. For steaming hot water, users push the lever down and then pull forwards, and to access the filtered water, simply push the lever backward - no safety lock required.

Refreshingly smart: the PROBOIL.2X is the next generation in intelligent hot water boilers, offering fast and trouble-free delivery of steaming hot filtered water at the touch of a handle. Fast and simple to install, this model offers a 2-litre stainless steel tank, toolless installation and is an insulated model with low running costs but with quick re-boil times and simple intuitive digital controls.

Cool touch technology: located inside the tap to create a barrier between the flow of steaming hot water and surface of the spout so it’s always cool to touch!

Flexible: 180° spout rotation for trouble-free cup filling, easy food prep and pot washing.

Scandi-X SAVINGS •

Flow limitation: Providing aerated hot and cold water with optional 5l/m flow limitation, which helps to minimise sink splash back and reduce overall water consumption. Pronteau Scandi-X can be purchased with or without a flow limiter and is designed to fit into the base of the spout and only limit the supply of domestic hot and cold water.

Cold start valve: Helping to reduce the home’s energy wastage, the right hand lever features cold start technology to provide two key benefits (1) Tap can be installed close to a wall or Splashback as the handle only needs to go forward to access domestic hot and cold water (2) Less chance of engaging the domestic hot water system as vertical lever position = cold, 45° angle = hot, and in the horizontal position = up to 98° steaming hot.

Laminar aerator: Save time and energy as Scandi-X features a Laminar Steaming Hot Water flow aerator, specially designed to deliver steaming hot water at a safe 2l/m for optimal cup filling.

Water optimisation: All Pronteau taps are supplied with the company’s premium water optimisation filter that offers supreme water filtration and scale control to give the best protection, flexibility and increased capacity. Offering a capacity of 1500L, end users can set the filter to match the hardness of water in their area and ensure peak performance and longevity.

Zero plastic: Designed with 4 IN 1 functionality, users can access filtered cold drinking water straight from the tap so they can ditch the plastic and support the environment by reducing single use plastic in the home!

Pronteau Scandi-X 4 IN 1 Matt White

The new Pronteau Scandi-X 4 IN 1 Instant Hot Water Tap designed by Abode is available now in Matt White PT1300, Matt Black PT1301 and Scandi Grey PT1302. Ben Buchele Elektromotorenwerke GmbH has delivered two electric motors to Reintjes for installation on a hybrid dredger, called Chicago, at the Port of Hamburg, Germany. The Nürnberg, Germany-based company manufactures standard and custombuilt motors for shipbuilders and other heavy-duty applications globally. Reintjes is a specialist in maritime gearboxes and powertrains; in this instance it was contracted to provide a hybrid powertrain consisting of two diesel engines and two electric motors, helping the ship operate at low emissions when close to port. The end user wanted an electric motor solution that enabled fully electric power at a speed of up to six knots, and offered the capacity to recharge the batteries, while using the diesel engines. Reintjes asked Ben Buchele for a weight-optimised, water-cooled engine that met certain criteria, such as 60 kW of power; frame size 200; rated speed of 2,130 rpm; inverter duty; and suitability for S1 continuous duty. Detlef Koslowsky, head of sales at Ben Buchele, said: “Special calibration is required to allow a hybrid system to easily switch between drive modes. One way to change from electric operation to diesel power is by using the control lever. Moving the lever by a small amount manoeuvres the ship using electric power. Once the lever reaches a set position, the diesel engine kicks in. However, a simple button is another method of switching between modes—and was the solution implemented for the Chicago. If the lever is in neutral, the captain can select electric mode by pressing the button and continue to steer the ship using the control lever. Drive modes can be changed at any time, even when the ship is in motion and the propeller is turning.”

Louis Zander, director of sales and service at Reintjes Hamburg, said: “In order to deliver the various operating modes, the motor has to allow such high speeds and be able to draw its rated power across a broad speed map. We designed the motor to produce almost two times the rated speed. In other words, the motor was designed to run at up to 4,300 rpm in PTO [power takeoff] mode, or when operating as a generator, but needed to supply 60 kW of power at as low as 2,000 rpm so that it could operate at full capacity at the required speed of six knots in electric mode. Only Ben Buchele motors can achieve this kind of map.” Continue reading the full article here >>>

Design and branding have been deployed synergistically. By balancing design, choice of materials and print finish, utilizing colour, form and texture contrast, in the context of well light, structure and space, the design team ensured that multiple brands coexist in concert while they maintain their own brand identity. ENA is much more than just a standard working place. Translating different cultures to modern design, each building is carefully designed to bring to life the architecture and life of the continent it represents and houses ‘local’ restaurants, canteens and recreational spaces that provide employees with a unique opportunity to discover different cultures, images, tastes, and traditions during a typical working day. ENA’s surrounding grounds and communal facilities (e.g. gym, outdoors entertaining area) are carefully designed and integrated with the entire space while they offer diverse opportunities to ENA’s workforce to exercise, socialize, interact, network and relax after work. So far, the newbuilt, metal buildings of Africa, Asia, America. Oceania and the totally renovated building of Antartica have been already delivered to the public, while the three historic, listed buildings for Europe are in the phase of design completion. ANTARCTICA Building Antarctica is one of the coldest and most desolate locations on earth, a dessert of ice, much of it still unexplored even today. Yet, Antarctica is a land of beauty and unanticipated delight that has inspired us to create a space where 22

fragments, transparencies, hue, light, reflection and reliefs coexist in an fresh and invigorating working environment. KN Group team has chosen a building that stands by itself at the end of the campus to host this continent. To boost the usage of the building by the campus visitors and employees, a break area was created at the rooftop, overlooking a breath-taking 360o view of Athens and the Emperor’s Choice ice cream and dessert corner in the ground floor. AFRICA Building The building is part of the ENA campus and consists of five floors that include offices for nine different brands. Each space contains a QA, a unique custom made construction, in which the front part is used by the managers ensuring a better overview while the back can be used as a conference desk or as a training department All interiors are inspired by several elements of the culture of different African countries. KN Group team combined and blended together patterns, colours and textures to emulate the colourful landscape of the African world. The building hosts the Afrobaba café. AMERICA Building Part of the ENA campus, the building consists of five floors.
