THE MISSION OF UP2US SPORTS IS TO ADVANCE SPORTS AS A SOLUTION TO THE CRITICAL CHALLENGES FACING OUR NATION’S YOUTH
2
3
HOW DO YOU SUMMARIZE A YEAR? By the young woman so concerned about Native American girls that she signed up to be a coach and launched a girls lacrosse program to inspire their self-confidence? By the young man who so respects his father’s lifetime of service as a police officer that he signed up as a coach to run a football program that reduces violence in the neighborhood where his father works? By the returning veterans who were so eager to prove that young people can be leaders in their communities that they signed up to coach them in soccer and life skills development? Every year, Up2Us Sports produces hundreds of stories of change that are made possible through sports. Behind every one of these stories are coaches who have dedicated a year of their life to be role models for the young people in their communities. Our national movement is redefining the field of mentoring to include millions of adults who use 4
coaching to teach children valuable lessons that they will take with them throughout their lives. Our call to action in the future is to expand our Coach Across America program to every major U.S. city and to train coaches in every community to be responsible mentors who inspire kids not just in athletics, but in life. How do I summarize a year? I summarize it in dance, soccer, baseball, football, squash, rugby and lacrosse. I summarize it in healthier children, better performing schools, and safer communities. I summarize it in the connection that sports has to each one of those outcomes. Thank you for your support in helping us provide underserved youth with a coach who cares about them and who reminds them that their decisions and actions matter.

MONITORING & EVALUATION
High Impact Attributes WE TRAIN OUR COACHES TO USE SPORT TO HELP KIDS DEVELOP INTERNAL
SELF-AWARENESS The ability to recognize one’s own feelings, use self-talk, and recognize personal boundaries, comfort zones, and triggers.
SITUATIONAL AWARENESS The ability to read surroundings, assess risk, and interpret circumstances as they unfold.
88% OF THE 1,535 YOUTH SURVEYED FROM THE COACH ACROSS AMERICA PROGRAM IMPROVED IN AT LEAST ONE HIGH IMPACT ATTRIBUTE
POSITIVE IDENTITY Confidence from how a person sees him/herself as an individual and as a member of groups. Showing strong self-esteem, selfidentity, and self-worth.
DISCIPLINE Having self-control, being able to delay gratification, and following rules.
Research in the fields of youth development, education, and risk prevention has revealed that one of the most important things we can do to help youth be successful is to assist in the development of certain characteristics or life skills that will help them to navigate future challenges. Together with
ATTRIBUTES THAT ARE KEY TO THEIR SUCCESS OUTSIDE OF SPORT.
PLAN B THINKING
SOCIAL CONFIDENCE
The ability to consider multiple options and have a backup plan. Being able to ask, “If X happens what are my options?
The ability to speak and act the way you want to in front of peers, to negotiate for yourself, to take a stand/intervene for what you believe, and to ask for help.
FUTURE FOCUS
PRO-SOCIAL CONNECTIONS
Identifying priorities, setting goals based on those priorities, and developing a specific plan of action to achieve them.
Having a support system of people (peers and adults) who model positive behavior and support you.
Edgework Consulting, Up2Us Sports identified a group of attributes through research in healthy decisionmaking, called the High Impact Attributes (HIAs). Research connects this group of attributes to sport participation and also to positive decision-making in youth and positive outcomes related to health,
education, and risk prevention. Youth who develop these attributes are equipped with the skills they need to resist peer pressure, resolve conflicts in a productive way, avoid risky situations, reach out to their networks for support, and choose long-term benefits over short-term rewards. 11

VETERAN OPPORTUNITY
Operation Coach Originally launched in 2014 in Miami, Operation Coach continued to grow in 2015. The initiative hires and trains returning military veterans to coach youth sports and inspire kids to stay in school, say no to violence, and make better life choices. The groundbreaking program puts veterans in the fast lane immediately upon their return home. Veterans are able to draw on their teamwork, leadership, and discipline skills as well as their physical training to make a difference as role models in their hometown communities. Operation Coach provides these veterans a meaningful experience to help them in their transition to civilian life and support their path toward a future career, while offering a chance to serve as everyday heroes to at-risk youth across the country. Thanks to additional support from new partners, Operation Coach will expand to both Los Angeles and Philadelphia starting in 2016.
