2017 – 2018

From the

UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT Dear Friends, I am inspired daily by the unwavering loyalty and commitment to this University by our amazing alumni and friends like yourself who give of their time, talents and treasures to ensure the ongoing success of this University. In the following pages of the 2017-18 Annual Report, you will see how these efforts have helped make the past academic year one of the greatest in the 184-year history of University of the Ozarks. Â Â It has been especially satisfying to witness the continued generosity of our alumni and friends through the current $55 million Climb Higher Campaign. In July we passed the $40 million mark in the campaign to upgrade and enhance our science and athletic facilities and provide more scholarships and opportunities for our students. As of early November, more than 3,300 members of our incredible University family have donated nearly $43 million in gifts ranging from $1 to $10 million. One of the notable aspects of the Campaign so far is that our supporters have given more than $28 million for student scholarships, an extraordinary testimony to the magnanimity of our constituents. Generations of future students will have access to a high-quality, Christian, liberal arts education because of these gifts.

Together we can work to expand and enhance opportunities for our students and realize the ambitious vision and mission of this remarkable institution of higher education. Richard L. Dunsworth, University President

1 ///

With the close of the Campaign approximately two years away, there is still plenty of work to be done, especially in the areas of science and athletics. As our enrollment continues to reach record highs, I ask for your help as we remain committed to making higher education possible for all students, no matter their religious, cultural, educational or economic background. Together we can work to expand and enhance opportunities for our students and realize the ambitious vision and mission of this remarkable institution of higher education. Fondly,

Rich

Campus

HIGHLIGHTS

Campus Welcomes Largest Enrollment In University History

• • • • • • •

The University welcomed 755 students during the 2017 Fall Semester, the college’s largest in its 183-year history, a 10 percent increase over 2016 and the fifth consecutive year of growth. A total of 99 degrees were awarded to graduates during the 2018 Spring Commencement ceremony. The University surpassed the $40 million mark in July in its $55 million CLIMB HIGHER: A Campaign for Students. The five-year campaign places an emphasis on student scholarships as well as science and athletic facilities. The campaign will run through 2020. In a $1.26 million investment, the University acquired 14 residential properties adjacent to or near campus in 2017-18 and completed major renovations to the properties. The initiative yielded 40 additional beds for students and five homes for employees. Among the properties acquired was the historic Rogers House (pictured) that serves as the Provost Home. Built in the 1880s, it is one of the oldest residences in the county. Voorhees Hall, completed in 1941, was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built as a practice teaching school for the education program, Voorhees has housed numerous programs over the last eight decades, including the pharmacy school. It is being leased and will open as a restaurant in January. In the 2018 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges,” Ozarks was ranked 3rd overall among more than 70 Regional Colleges in the South Region. Ozarks entered into an articulation agreement with Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) in Bentonville, Ark., in March. Under the new partnership, a number of NWACC degrees are now acceptable for transfer articulation to bachelor degrees at Ozarks. /// 4

COMPASS Initiative Enhances Teaching and Learning

• • • • • •

The University introduced COMPASS during the Spring of 2018. The campus-wide digital learning initiative is one of the first of its kind in the country and provided universal access to a common set of learning technologies. Through the program, all students, faculty and staff were provided Apple iPad devices through an initiative that administrators believe will create an environment of innovation, creativity and collaboration. For the first time in almost 30 years, students have the opportunity to enroll in the U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. The University re-established the program during the Spring 2018 Semester to provide students an opportunity to serve as commissioned officers in the active or reserve U.S. Army. The University’s Pat Walker Teacher Education Program partnered with the Guy Fenter Teacher Education Service Cooperative in a new program to improve new teacher retention rates in Arkansas. The Early Career Professional Educators program will provide training and support to novice teachers in an effort to reverse a state trend that sees three out of every ten new teachers leaving the profession within five years. Hailey Hardgrave, a biology and pre-medicine major from Hartman, Ark., was presented with the 2018 Hurie Award, which goes to the outstanding member of the senior class as voted on by the faculty. A total of 40 student presenters and 35 projects highlighted the sixth-annual Advanced Research and Creative Highlights (ARCH) Symposium. Ariana Lujan, Shelby Morales and Ana Sofia Camargo Montenegro took top honors in the annual event that allows students to showcase academic and research projects. The University’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) team won 20 top-five finishes at the 2018 PBL State Leadership Conference in April. /// 6

Among the faculty-led trips were a 10-day excursion to Bolivia and Peru to study language, culture and agriculture, and a trip to London to study the evolution of healthcare. Eight-time Grammy-nominated contemporary Christian singer Matt Maher performed a concert on the campus mall that was attended by more than 1,200 students, parents, faculty, staff and community members as part of Family Weekend during the Fall 2017 Semester. The concert was sponsored by the Walton Arts & Ideas Series and the Student Affairs Office. A survey by the Career Services Office of 2017 graduates showed a 98 percent success rate in employment or graduate school placement. The office hosted its annual Career Fair in November that drew more than 120 students and 30 businesses and organizations.

than 140 students took part in outings presented by Ozarks Outdoors. The excursions included a • More new wilderness pre-orientation program for incoming freshmen as well as activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, film festivals and even a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains for spring break. Ozarks Outdoors also hosted its first annual Outdoor and Adventure Film Festival.

Valeria “Vale” Robleto, a senior biology and chemistry major from Nicaragua, was elected by her peers to serve as the Student Government Association president for 2017-18. She served as SGA vice president the previous year and was a member of the University’s intercollegiate swim program.

Athletic

HIGHLIGHTS 317 Student-Athletes Represent 19 Sports

• • • • • • •

An all-time high of 317 student-athletes — or 42 percent of the campus body — participated in one or more of the 19 intercollegiate sports programs at the University. Five teams qualified for the American Southwest Conference (ASC) postseason tournament play in 2017-18: men’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball and softball. It was the first postseason appearance in program history for the softball team and the first postseason tournament for baseball since 2009. Ozarks had the ASC cross country champion (Nathan Rankin) and the ASC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year (Hannah Smith) as well as the wrestling program’s first two NCAA Division III Championship qualifiers (Devon Jackson and Rankin). Smith and Rankin were named U of O athletes of the year. The men’s and women’s clay target shooting program once again excelled at the ACUI Collegiate National Tournament in March. Senior Grace Brown won her second national championship, this time in international trap, and senior Jeff Proctor won a national title in international bunker trap. The athletic department, in partnership with Arvest Bank, launched a new app to give fans the ability to more conveniently check schedules and scores, view rosters, receive notifications and watch live events. The athletic department opened the new Alexander-Boreham Tennis Center for its men’s and women’s intercollegiate tennis program. The multi-million dollar center includes eight LED-lighted courts and PlaySight smart court technology. Four alumni were inducted into the U of O Sports Hall of Fame: baseball player Steve Higgins (1977-79), athletic trainer Don Kessler (1966-70), high school coaching legend George Loss (1950-54) and soccer standout Lindy (Swatzell) Mantooth (2001-2005). /// 10

At the heart of the week, members of the University of the Ozarks community stop in a spirit of worship, of jubilee, and of rest and discernment. The importance of this Sabbath is to replenish our souls so that we can finish the race ahead of us mindful of our callings to service, justice, growth, hospitality, and honesty.

We are committed to the personal development of all members of the University of the Ozarks community, as well as the communal development of our University and its spirit. We seek to assist one another in identifying our academic, spiritual, personal, and institutional vocations and pathways.

13 ///

University of the Ozarks is a place of communal living – we learn as a community in our academics, we live together in the residence halls, we work together in our offices and conference rooms. In order for our community to flourish, we are called to participate in truth-telling. Owning up to our own mistakes and gently reminding others of ways in which they can do better are essential to building and maintaining our community.

Having been blessed with a beautiful campus, surrounded by ample opportunities to experience the natural environment, we are called to welcome all who visit us, especially those who one might consider an outsider. Our campus and our lives are enriched by guests who enrich our community with new life and new possibilities.

ANNUAL REPORT /// 2 0 1 7 - 1 8

Members of the University of the Ozarks community are called to right injustice. We are committed to engaging with the diversity in our local areas and in the larger world and speaking out when we find mistreatment of any living individual or group. To this end, we seek the courage to look around ourselves, ahead of where we are, and beyond our nearest horizons.

We call one another to offer sustainable, lifeaffirming service to all we contact. We strive, as well, to offer our service with generosity and joy so that it can be received as a gift. We strive to ensure our energies are spent wisely in the service of all of creation.

MISSION STATEMENT

True to our Christian heritage, we prepare students from diverse religious, cultural, educational and economic backgrounds to live life fully.

EXPERIENTIAL Learning Ariana

Lujan Experiential learning is the process in which students develop knowledge and skills from direct experiences outside the Ozarks classroom. Like all of her teacher education classmates, Ariana Lujan, a 2018 elementary education major from Little Elm, Texas, spent an entire academic year serving an internship in a local school classroom in preparation for a teaching career.

15 ///

“I feel like my classes prepared me very well for my internship and then having a full year in the classroom before even graduating was an incredible benefit. I left Ozarks eager and extremely prepared to lead my first classroom.

GLOBAL Discovery Kole

Smith Kole Smith, a 2018 biology wildlife major from Laramie, Wyoming, had limited international travel experience before embarking on a faculty-led 12day Ozarks study abroad trip to the South American countries of Bolivia and Peru in January with a dozen of his classmates. The students had opportunities throughout the trip to meet and interact with the indigenous people in those countries.

“Seeing and meeting the people of Bolivia and Peru really opened my eyes to the struggles that people are forced to endure just because of where they were born. I realized how fortunate I am for the opportunities that I have. /// 16

Personal GROWTH

Hailey

Hardgrave When Hailey Hardgrave of Hartman, Arkansas, graduated from Ozarks in May of 2018, she became the first person in her family to earn a college degree. The biology major earned the highest academic honors possible and was selected by the faculty as the Hurie Award recipient for the outstanding senior in her graduating class. She was accepted into medical school and is pursuing a career as a physician.

“The personal relationships that I developed with my professors made all the difference for me ... It wasn’t easy being the first in my family to attend college, but Ozarks provided everything I needed to succeed.” 17 ///

Teaching EXCELLENCE

Dr. Allison

Freed Dr. Allison Freed, assistant professor of education, and several U of O education majors developed and implemented the Rockin’ Rebels After School Program in the spring at nearby Westside Elementary School. Under the direction of Dr. Freed, the Ozarks students developed a number of literacy strategies and activities for the K-6 students and their families during the family literacy night. The initiative has evolved into a weekly after-school program led by education majors.

“Participating in these enriching, community based programs for low income students is one way Ozarks students begin to grapple with equity and social justice issues that exist in education.”
