In N.E.W.S. you can find updated events around your campus and community, different cultures around the world, and most importantly the people around you. We have six constant sections in N.E.W.S.: Featured Star, Event Highlight, International Issues, Fun Facts, World Food, and a 2-week Calendar. UOiSA is the University of Oregon International Student Association. We represent international students from all around the world. UOiSA assists international students with the transition to U.S. culture and society as well as the classroom environment. UOiSA also assists domestic students to learn about the international community on campus.
Tony: iSA is a big family to me. As one of the parents in this family, I would like to take care of everyone in my family and see them grow. I really wish everyone in our family this year can try their best and make iSA the best year ever! Go iSA!
Hung: iSA is a home for international students on the campus. It’s a legacy that has a 50year history. I, along with the other members, carry on not only the tradition, but also a mission to make this place more welcoming and heart-warming for everybody.

The History of Halloween Halloween is a holiday that we all have celebrated since we were very young. When we were small, we would dress up in our favorite costumes and go out with our friends and compete on who had more candy by the end of the night. Halloween, wasn’t always celebrated this way though, before it used to be much different. The word Halloween comes from “All Hallows’ evening” originated from Celtic tradition. During those times, there was a fire festival called Samhein (Sah-ween) and it marked the beginning of winter. During this time, it was believed that the door between the world of the dead and the living would open. The Celts believed that the undead would roam around the world of the living, so in order to keep the spirits at peace, they would prepare by leaving food out for them, they would sacrifice animals on their behalf and they would light bonfires in order to guide the spirits back to the underworld and keep them away from the living. In order to hide their identity, the Celts would then dress up in scary, ghostly costumes. By doing this, the spirits wouldn’t recognize them as “living” and they wouldn’t harm them, which allowed the Celts to go from one house to house to eat food. It was their version of trick-or-treating. Instead of getting candy, they would dress up and go eat food at different houses throughout the night.

• The recipe for candy corn hasn’t changed since the 1900’s. • Halloween is the second largest (commercial) holiday in the U.S • Halloween is celebrated all around the world. • If you are over 12 years old and want to go trick or treating in Illinois you get fined. • In Alabama it’s illegal to dress up as a priest for Halloween. • “Thriller” is the most played song during October 31st. • To meet a witch, put your clothes inside out and walk backwards on Halloween night. • Before pumpkins, people used to carve turnips. • Halloween is a national holiday. • The birthplace of Halloween is in Ireland. • In the UK, white cats are supposed to bring bad luck. • There is always a full moon on October 31st. • Snickers, Kitkats, M&M’s and Reeses are the number 1 candy of choice. • More candy is consumed during October than in any other month. • If you see a spider during Halloween, it means that a dead relative is watching you. • Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween. • The scariest haunted house in the world is located in a cave in Eugene, OR. • Pumpkins are actually a fruit.

hat is Halloween? What does it represent? Each answer varies as each country has their own distinct tradition. Explaining Halloween would be like reading the dictionary. Many different interpretations, ideas and traditions are being added. Join me on this international trip to discover what Halloween means to everyone! First, we will take a look at the United States of America. Originally, Halloween was celebrated by the Celts, but it didn’t take long for traditions and ideas to spread. Halloween is celebrated in the United States every October 31. Every year, on this day, children and adults dress up in costumes and go from door to door getting as much candy as their bags can carry. Pumpkins are carved and turned into glowing Jack-o-lanterns. Many people have been celebrating Halloween at costume parties! Can you think of a better way to celebrate Halloween than with your friends? Now, we head south to Mexico and Central America where Halloween is celebrated in a different, yet interesting way. Día de los Muertos, also known as ‘The Day of the Dead’ is a festival that is a celebration of the dead. The Day of the Dead would be celebrated on November 1 and 2. The celebration would start out with families visiting the graves of their loved ones and decorating them with flowers, candles, etc. This celebration marks

existence of life and death. The memories of loved ones are shared and this helps bring people together by celebrating the role that their ancestors played in the larger community. Food and beverages would be exchanged and placed by the altar or gravesite. This was to provide the departed souls with the fundamental necessities when they returned to earth. A popular food is bread of the dead (pan de muerto). Who would have thought that Halloween would have a deeper meaning than this?
C
ontinuing to South America, we come across the celebration known as the Feast of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls. This is a well-known holiday as it is celebrated in the Philippines, Singapore and Mexico as well. Feast of All Saints or All Souls Day is celebrated on November 1, respectively on the same day as the Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico. This celebrates all of the Saints that remained independent of any pagan influence. The Feast of All Souls was the offering of prayers to the departed souls. Most of these souls were not cleansed or have not atoned for their past sins and these prayers would help them with their atonement.
Are you tired yet? I hope not, there is still so much to learn! Next, in India, there is a tradition that is called Pitru Paksha and this is a time in which our ancestors are honored.

imilar to Mexico and Latin American countries, China shares the tradition of All Souls Day, which is also known as QingMing Festival. The Qingming festival is celebrated from April 4 to April 6 yearly. The Qingming festival is seen as a combination of happiness and sadness. During these festivals, all of the cemeteries would be filled with people who came to clean the tombstones and offer sacrifices. These sacrifices would be various things, food, and flowers, likeable things that belonged to the deceased person. Incense would be burned and they would bow before the tombstone. Lanterns would be lit at night so that they would look like “god’s lanterns”. However, there is a festival that is called Yu Lan and this is when ghosts and spirits, including the spirits of deceased ancestors, come from their resting place. This is different from the QingMing Festival because the deceased are believed to visit the living. Yu is celebrated on the 15th night of the 7th Chinese month.
Halloween Treats This is also celebrated in Taiwan.

nother festival that is celebrated is the Obon Festival, which is similar to the Ghost Festival that is celebrated. The Obon Festival is also known as the Festival of Lanterns. Folk dances, also known as the Bon Odori are done. The Bon Odori signifies the setting aside of one’s ego to do a unselfconscious dance. The Bon Festival is when spirits of the dead are said to return home to their families and so similarly to Latin American traditions, incense is burned and graves are visited. Lanterns are sent to help the spirits find their way back to the other world. This celebration is also seen in Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia, and Korea and in the United States and Canada. There are still so many more traditions to talk about, but there’s only so much paper! Can you believe that everyone has their own unique way of celebrating Halloween? Halloween is a way of establishing new connections within the community. It is a time where you can let go and have fun with friends and family. How do you celebrate Halloween? Send us your story! This seasonal latte is the perfect remedy for a rainy or cold day. Stop by the bakery to get your latte!
Pumpkin Cupcakes & Pie If you are craving for the taste of pumpkin within a pie or cupcake that simply melts in your mouth, you must stop by Sweet Life Patisserie. They have the most exquisite desserts you could ever wish for. This is a mandatory stop for you whenever you are in Eugene, especially during pumpkin season!
