Welcome to the 2025–26 Season of Events!

I am delighted to share with you the 2025–26 Season of Events brochure featuring some of the over 600 events presented by the Faculty of Music during this academic year. Our outstanding students and dedicated faculty will produce a vast range of events, enriched by the participation of guest artists, composers, and researchers made possible by the many individuals who provide generous support to the Faculty of Music.

Concerts include performances by our ensembles, including orchestral, choral, winds, historical performance, jazz, contemporary, and several global music ensembles and specialized instrumental ensembles. Major opera productions present the Canadian premiere of Donizetti’s comedy Le Convenienze ed Inconvenienze Teatrali and a powerful new interpretation of Britten’s chamber opera The Rape of Lucretia. Research events include colloquium lectures by music educators, musicologists, ethnomusicologists and music theorists, in addition to the week-long Music Research Festival. The 10-day New Music Festival showcases the works of Canadian composers, including students and alumni, performed by students, faculty, and guests. Throughout the year distinguished visitors join for short residencies, enriching the educational experiences of students across all degrees and programs. Some of these visitors— and many others—will work with our students in public masterclasses, and I encourage you to attend at least one of these to see instruction in action.

Owing to the temporary closure of the MacMillan Theatre for upgrades, our large ensemble and opera performances will take place off campus this academic year. Most of our other concerts and events will be presented on campus in Walter Hall. For those of you looking especially for daytime concerts, I draw your attention to the Thursdays at Noon Concert Series in Walter Hall.

I encourage you to visit music.utoronto.ca/events to learn about additional events and to obtain more information on those featured in the 2025–26 Season of Events brochure. Please do return to our website throughout the coming months as many events are added while the academic year is in progress. I look forward to seeing you at a Faculty of Music event soon!

Music Research Festival

February 23–27, 2026

The Music Research Festival (MRF) is an annual week-long series of free events in celebration of music research and creation at the Faculty of Music, hosted by the Research & Partnerships Office (RPO) in collaboration with the Music Library. The festival aims to showcase the innovative research and diverse creative practices happening within and beyond the Faculty of Music.

Festival events highlight researcher-creators at all stages: undergraduate and graduate students share emerging research through the Faculty of Music Library's Research Showcase poster sessions; and faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows offer lectures and sit on panels and roundtables. MRF concludes annually with a special capstone event.

The RPO provides research support services to faculty, staff, and graduate students seeking internal and external funding to pursue their research and creative goals. We are committed to promoting the research stories of our community; building capacity for research and creation; preparing emerging researchers and innovators for career success; and developing new local and global partnerships.
