Bachelor of Engineering
A message from Director John Runciman
Welcome to Engineering at Guelph! We are a highly ranked, mid-sized Canadian engineering school with a long history of innovation and graduate success. Located on the boundary of Toronto’s high-tech industrial zone and the rural environments of Southern Ontario, we draw students from across Canada and beyond into our interdisciplinary, design-focused structure.
Dr. John Runciman
Director, School of Engineering University of Guelph
Engineering at Guelph is different from the programs offered through other institutions. We are built on a common, design-focused spine, that runs through all of our programs, from the first semester of first year, to the last semester of your final year. At Guelph engineering you will be able to work with engineering students from other programs, and just like in the “real world,” optimize the team you build to tackle design problems. Innovative solutions require innovative ideas, and what better way to develop the best ideas but through combining your talents with students who compliment your own skills, rather than echo them? We have spent decades honing this approach to learning how to excel at being an engineer. Every year we graduate hundreds of engineers into outstanding jobs across a range of diverse engineering fields.
Come to Guelph, experience our beautiful campus, eat the great food, immerse yourself in an innovative engineering program while being supported through our tight-knit student community, perhaps join a club to build a racecar, or apply your engineering talents to a needed project in an under supported global region. There is so much to offer, your biggest challenge will be where to start.

Bachelor of Engineering
Improve sustainability through innovation
Since 1874, engineering at the University of Guelph has focused on improving life for humans, animals, and plants through innovative engineering techniques. All of our engineering majors are developed with design engineering as a foundation; design is fundamental to all U of G Engineering disciplines.
As a student, your hands-on design projects will have you transform the theoretical into reality. Those hands-on design projects begin in your first year. Every year, you’ll work alongside students from other engineering disciplines on a different design project, leading to your final capstone design course in your final year.
As an engineering student at U of G, you have seven majors to choose from, each offered in co-op. You have the opportunity to take elective courses outside of engineering, such as arts, social sciences and business. You can also pursue a minor after 2nd year, and expand your knowledge outside of engineering!

• All seven engineering majors have Regular and Co-op Stream options.
• Co-op work terms begin in the summer of your second year and give you paid work experience; you will complete one 4-month work term and two 8-month work terms, for a total of 20 months of work experience! The 8-month work terms are a hit among employers - there’s so much more opportunity for breadth of learning and contribution to the company.
• Co-op work terms are not restricted to local companies. Work internationally in Australia or Europe, for example!
• If co-op is something that interests you, be sure to apply directly for your major of choice with co-op for your best chances of securing a placement. (Students who apply for the Undeclared entry do not have the co-op option and can only apply after their first year, however spaces are extremely limited).

in first year only, only available in regular stream
What is Undeclared Entry?
This option is designed for students who know they want to study engineering, but are not yet sure what major they’re interested in. Selecting undeclared, you’ll take many of the same courses in first semester as all other engineering students in your cohort.
Before the start of your third semester, you’ll declare your major in any of the seven majors, and you are guaranteed a regular stream spot in your major of choice.
Co-op
If you wish to pursue co-op, it is recommended you apply to the co-op stream of the major you are most interested in directly from high school, rather than selecting the Undeclared Entry, as placements in the co-op stream are limited. Obtaining a co-op position through in-course application is challenging due to competitiveness and high demand for the co-op stream.
