His sage advice was to always wear closed-toed shoes when wearing a long gown, because they don’t interrupt the line of the dress as they peak out in the walk down the aisle. He also had strong convictions that without a veil, you are just wearing a white dress. The veil, he said, makes you look like a bride. For information address The Wedding Guys, Inc.

CULTURES Every year we look to the zeitgeist to survey the nuances of how couples are choosing to tie the knot. With each new season we see trends that coincide with the ever-evolving concept of what a wedding means for the couple, their family and their guests. This year as we dive into the underlying currents, one thing truly stands out as the next big influencer of weddings; family heritage.

Weddings aren’t just a celebration of love, they are a celebration of personal history and family heritage. Couples are choosing to celebrate their heritage in the best kind of ways, and we love how personalized wedding ceremonies are becoming. By injecting elements of heritage, couples can show guests more about their cultural backgrounds. The celebrations are becoming experiences for the couple and their families because of it. We see this in many forms including adapting traditional heritage elements like adding a Chinese tea ceremony before the cocktail hour, or incorporating the Nigerian Yoruba tradition of tasting four flavors (sour, bitter, hot and sweet) which symbolizes how the couple can get through hard times together before stepping down the aisle.

One of our favorite wedding trends is a return to tradition. Couples are embracing time-

Saba Wedding Photography

honored customs, often choosing to don the ceremonial attire of their ancestors, like this traditional ghoonghat, at left, placed on the bride as a veil to cover her face for a Hindu, Jain and Sikh wedding ceremony.

Some couples are taking it even a step further. One of the top initiators of destination weddings today is what is known as heritage return. Couples are looking to celebrate their heritage with a wedding that will include a return to the land of origin or the land of ancestry of one of the partners. This is why we’ve seen Ireland, Scandinavia and Italy become increasingly popular for destination weddings.

Couples are also hiring entertainers to keep guests engaged. From bellydancers to celebrate Egyptian, Lebanese or Turkish ancestry to henna parties celebrating Middle Eastern and North African cultures. The Dhol drum, at right, is a traditional double-headed drum that originated in South Asia, now it’s been adapted in various forms for celebrations in many cultures.

We are seeing the trend for couples choosing to ‘adopt’ other cultures as our world becomes more culturally aware. One popular adaptation is Mehndi, at

right, otherwise known as henna – a paste associated with positive spirits and good luck. Indian Wedding tradition calls for a Mehndi ceremony to be held the night before the wedding as a way of wishing the bride good health and prosperity as she makes her journey on to marriage. The Mehndi Ceremony is organized by the Bride’s family bringing together the female components of each side. While Mehndi is mainly for females, male relatives are invited to join in on the party that comes after the Bride has completed her henna.

Creating new traditions can also honor tradition. The dreamcatchers, at left, sometimes referred to as “Sacred Hoops,” make a beautiful altar while paying homage to the Ojibwe and Sioux cultures. They traditionally used dreamcatchers as a talisman to protect sleeping people, usually children, from bad dreams and nightmares.

Honoring our cities, regions, or family heritage also blends into the menu creation. Whether you are celebrating Chinese traditions or southern customs,

POP CULTURE Incredible design ideas are everywhere, and using them in your wedding will ensure that it is a signature experience for everyone attending. Everything you see in the world around you is fair game for your wedding inspiration. That’s why we explore what’s popular in interior design, food and lifestyle to bring you the very best ideas. Pop culture plays such an important role in shaping our vision, so we’ve spent the last year trend spotting; throughout our travels and scouting the globe for new wedding inspiration we’ve put together a list of the elements you can fast-track into your wedding. The Wedding Trends Look Book is here to help keep your wedding ahead of the trend curve.

It’s surprisingly easy to take pop culture trends and implement them into various parts of your wedding. Spotting these trends and incorporating them into your wedding story will surely impress your guests. Watch their delight as they recognize the trends that they have been experiencing in their surrounding world. By incorporating pop culture trends, guests can identify your wedding elements from the hottest fashions, new culinary cues, or even the latest graphic patterns they’ve seen in home furnishings. Guests will appreciate the thought you put into their experience.

Taking a snapshot from the fashion world, we see a renewed focus on handcrafted pieces with designers working in artisanal motifs including fabric mixing, lace embroidery and

intricate knitwear. Crochet knits and Mexican handicraft will be the ‘it’ look of 2020.

Neutral, muted colors will play an important part in our aesthetic lens for 2020. Neutrals come in classic and serene shades and will blend beautifully in your wedding design. We’re primarily seeing shades of gray and beige. These will blend beautifully with the feminine tones interior design firms are pushing into 2020. Watch for variations of pink. These tones are all about different shades of pink, but they’re more subtle. Blush, millennial pink, bronze, taupe, and other light pink shades will work well in a neutral room. Watch as fabrics become more tactile. Rich velvets and fine woolen fabrics provide the perfect blend of luxury and comfort; and we’re already seeing this trend pop up in wedding fashions.

Geometric patterns continue to play an important role in design. 2020 is all about finding a balance with geometrics. Designers are making a statement with bold and vibrant geometric patterns in signature pieces. This year extending to elements like the graphic lighting, at left. It’s easy to be on-trend by picking an area of your wedding where you want a geometric pattern to make a bold statement.

We’re seeing that mixed metals are going to be all over the place in 2020. Think bright silvers, brushed golds, dull tins, and warm coppers. Silver and brown metals will pair well together, like iron and gold or cooper and tin. Layer these metal elements in your reception decor and you will be right on-trend in 2020.

COLOR STORY As you begin discussing your wedding plans with family and friends, we promise one of the first questions you’ll hear is, “what are your wedding colors?”. This question might come right away from your bridal party since ‘wedding colors’ are usually directly associated with what color the bridesmaid dresses will be. However, wedding colors are so much more than simply the color selection for the bridesmaid gowns. Today, wedding color schemes are incorporated with every single part of the wedding design from your tabletop choices to styled floral and even the invitations guests will see weeks before your big day.

Don’t let one specific color guide your design. Instead of selecting a color first, we suggest you determine what you want your wedding experience to feel like, then focus on the colors that evoke that feeling. Get inspired by looking at home interior trends and how these color palettes can be incorporated into the perfect wedding day look. Need more inspiration? Take a look in your closet and see what tones you naturally gravitate towards. We love to turn to the fashion runways to see what fresh palettes of color best align with each wedding design and you will see all the 2020 fashion colors throughout this edition.

Just as everything else in weddings is evolving, so are wedding colors. A decade or two

Galina Pavelchak

ago couples would stick to one or two wedding colors and leave it at that. Rather than choosing a single color, today couples are opting for comprehensive wedding pallets and color schemes that can truly evoke a certain mood or ambience for your event.

Having a variety of shades of color looks great throughout your wedding. If you repeat the same color everywhere, it’s not as visually pleasing. Creating a strong color palette will combine four to five colors, including the tones of design elements. It can seem overwhelming to decide what colors to put together. In your selection, choose a variety of colors that include neutral, dominant and accent colors. Discover creative tricks to see different colors that pair naturally together, like looking to different shades of lipstick or inspiration from nature.

Colors change with each season, requiring our focus to shift to relevant trend forward palettes each year. PantoneÂŽ is one of the best color resources for your wedding design. Their forecasters select palettes for fashion and home interiors each season.

Each December they also announce the Color of the Year, which is the hue they feel most impacts the industry. They’re great at sharing the upcoming color trends that can help you choose the best colors for your wedding.

For 2020, Classic Blue is Pantone’s Color of the Year; A timeless and enduring blue hue, which is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of Classic Blue highlight the desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.

Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, Classic Blue is a reflective blue tone fostering resilience.

STYLED FLORAL Florals can make a big statement whether you are hoping to achieve a minimalist look or a glamorous focal point; flowers can truly transform the look of your wedding day. Since flowers have been an integral part of weddings since the beginning of time, it’s no surprise that flowers continue to play such a key part in weddings today, but wedding flowers in 2020 will continue to evolve.

This year, we will continue to see the popularity of organic pieces with open blooms. Mixed textures are also going to be popular as couples shift away from the one flower look. Couples will embrace varied blossoms this year, but watch as leafy foliage becomes less prevalent as florists replace it with other textures in varied shades. The hand-tied bouquet, at left, features the textures of peonies, carnations and astilbe combined with roses and tulips.

Watch as hanging florals and floral structures transform venues. Whether it’s a centerpiece cascading from the ceiling over the head table, floral garland draped around doorways or faux chandeliers created by bloom adorned hoops, florists and couples are getting creative, not only with the types of flowers used but how they are designed and placed to make an even bigger statement. We continue to see the use of unique foliage, blossoms and even vegetables that can add interesting texture, shape and color that you wouldn’t

Sergiokat

find in traditional arrangements.

Don’t be afraid to use natural garden produce to provide interest and texture. Berries and root vegetables can add great unexpected shapes. Foliage, like ferns can add feather-like texture. At right, the use of chocolate cosmos, white lisianthus, brunia berries, seedumgreen, white trichelium, chocolate Queen Ann’s Lace, globe thistle, scabiosa pods, smoketree and brown ornamental grass add an unexpected statement and stunning texture to this floral centerpiece. The end result was a unique arrangement with a woodland feel.

Florists are masters of design, not only when it comes to crafting beautiful bouquets and arrangements, but also when it comes to envisioning how everything will come together in your space. Don’t be afraid to ask your florist for advice when it comes to mixing colors, sizes and heights in your process.

USE NATURAL GARDEN PRODUCE AND TEXTURE

TO PROVIDE INTEREST

When you are selecting styled floral, look for thoughtfully designed placements that blend natural elements harmoniously. Often, the smallest floral arrangements can also have the greatest impact and watch as petite bouquets start to pack a punch. At left, the use of a variety of shapes and textures of flower blossoms combine to make a big statement even when the bouquet isn’t so big.

Sometimes floral design is not so much about the volume, as it is about strategic placement throughout your space. Especially as the popularity of unconventional wedding venues, like barns, warehouses and outdoor spaces continue to grow, it can be difficult to make a large space feel “full”. We love over-the-top arrangements and they do have their place at a wedding, but you don’t always need large arrangements to fill a space if you are strategic with your placement.

FASHION The two eagerly awaited months of the year in the bridal industry are April and October. Designers, press, bloggers, influencers and salon owners, aka the powers of the bridal fashion industry, converge on New York City eager to preview the new Spring and Fall bridal collections and then critique the runways during New York Bridal Fashion Week. Historically in the world of fashion, “bridal” has always had its own signature looks and there has never been crossover between traditional bridal style and current fashions. That is until lately. Designers seemed to have this in mind for their Spring and Fall 2020 collections. Yes, there are still ball gowns, A-lines, Mermaid and Fit & Flare silhouettes. Add in a cathedral veil, and custom embellishments and voila you have all the makings for a moment worthy of saying”Yes to the Dress” with complete confidence.

Today’s 2020 collections are a far cry from the strapless satin ball gowns introduced in the late 1980’s, even though today we do see fashion influence stemming from that decade. For those who remember, those strapless silhouettes were radical and for some considered too risqué for brides at the time. Today we wouldn’t even blink an eye with plunging necklines and backs, illusion fabrics with unlined bodices and skirts and the new sophisticated and sexy thigh-high-slits. Modern traditional styles are evident for 2020. Retro-revisited inspiration continues to evolve into voluminous ball gowns, silhouettes with

sleeves, hints of color, 3-D flowers, bows and the jumper.

With modern traditional style, sleeves are now available in many varieties as the bishop sleeve modernized by the “garter” technique allows them to be removed after the ceremony, creating a strapless silhouette. Dramatic long sleeves with a flowing effect can also be detached showing a very dramatic elegant style. Embellishments such as feathers can enhance an illusion fabric jacket creating quite the wow moment.

Say “puffy sleeves” when it comes to bridal and one automatically thinks back to the gown Princess Diana wore to her wedding in 1981 or by some considered the gown that wore her. For a more urban chic vision you may want to consider a removable jacket or long cape which will allow you to deliver the drama it will bring to the ensemble. Trying to envision this style for your day, place yourself in these images and imagine the look from your guests upon your entrance.

When romance encompasses the day, puffy sleeves can just be the beginning. The use of 3-D flowers continues this season allowing for a very romantic and sweet style. The interesting thing about the flowers is how the designers intertwine the 3-D flowers and their

inspirational vision to their silhouettes.

Utilizing the full extent of their talent, designers are intermingling with lace as if the floral lace is the canvas and the flower is evolving from the painting. Some of the silhouettes are almost completely designed as a bed of flowers

Bows are not just for the “girly” bride. Today’s designers are also relying on bows for enhancing some of the most sophisticated and elegant gowns for the daringly stylish bride. Yes, backof-the-waist bows are the main point of placement for designers; the difference today is the different forms of bows.

Beautifully draped shoulder bows and even bust line cover-ups allow for a bold traditional-style bow in the back which is a perfect look for ceremony images. The “untied” bow is a favorite giving an artistic presentation and a bit of an Asian flare cascading with graceful eloquence in a long removable train. No matter what bow is chosen, the fabrics can make all the difference in the look, such as ridged dupioni, rich voluminous satins and wispy ethereal chiffon and organza giving a very flowing appearance.

When determining the most interesting developments for 2020 fashion, the most amazing leap in design is the jumper or pantsuit. When you think of a pantsuit today it’s more than just slacks and a blazer, we are seeing styles from a more traditional approach to Marilyn Monroe-inspired bodices from the 1955 hit movies, including The Seven Year Itch. We also love the idea of brides wearing bridal jumpsuits for other weddingrelated events like bridal showers, rehearsal dinners or even the second look for your reception.

Our favorite aspect of these trending silhouettes is how you can style them with leather racing gloves and yes even hats. From the traditional men’s Fedora and Trilby hats to over-scale embellished hats, regardless of your choice heads will turn.

Formal tuxedos will always be in-style and yet something so unexpected and yet predictable has occurred. The occasion for men’s formal wear at weddings is redefining itself. With weddings becoming more relaxed and less formal, tuxedos are slow to move off the hangers as men in the wedding party are opting for suits, but just what suits are in style?

The slim look introduced last year may be in style but not for all body types. In 2020 we are welcoming the double breasted suit in solids and plaids, bolder pinstripes and a return to vintage European styling with the three-piece suit on the horizon.

SPACE When it comes to your wedding environment, think about the gathering place you want to create for your guests. The best memories are always made when friends and family gather. It seems as if every family or friendship has a favorite gathering place. In some families it might be the kitchen, for your favorite friendship it might be the cozy corner coffee shop. No matter where or what your gathering place is, it is an important piece of creating those special moments and memories that last a lifetime.

Think of your venue as the ultimate gathering place where your closest friends and family will come together to celebrate you and your love. Your guest list is unique to you and your fiancé, so your space for celebration should be unique as well! It is important to think about how you can best utilize your reception space to create an interactive gathering place for each of your guests to create their own memories. “Gather” won’t mean the same thing for all your guests. For your grandparents it might mean a relaxed lounge in a quiet area of the room, while your younger guests might gravitate towards a collection of high tops near the dance floor. Creating several lounge options in various locations allows your guests to choose the kind of environment they prefer.

Since weddings have become so diverse, there really is no such thing as a “traditional” wedding. Creating a space that allows for more socializing and activity transforms the wedding reception into something so much more than dinner and dancing. This has also Paper Antler

changed the required elements of what was considered ‘the standard’ reception.

Creating a sense of place at your wedding will set the tone for your reception. This is a crucial factor in taking your reception from bland to brilliant. Your personal style can finally be expressed with the range of furniture rental options now available; from the mid-century modern furnishings, to French Baroque, industrial, bohemian and even vintage looks.

Now elements like soft seating and rental furniture are more often incorporated into wedding designs. People naturally like to form conversation groups; combining furnishings in clusters and pods of seating allows them to do this effortlessly. It’s also important to think about practicality. At right, a cluster of metal tables provides guests a convenient place to set their drink while lounging on over-stuffed linen tufted sofas.

Seating groupings can be enhanced with accessories which also give you the chance to make the design your own. At right, the use of the perfect mix of pillows and throws along with distressed area rugs help to combine modern luxury with rustic elements.

SIPS The mixology craze has infiltrated the wedding scene and a range of full-service bartenders are now offering a beverage experience unlike anything we have tasted before. Cocktails have never been so diverse and for 2020 get ready to taste flavors you might not have considered. It seems there is something for everyone now and the signature cocktail may have just taken a back seat to each person having their own favorite.

One big change we are seeing this year is in mocktails — non-alcoholic options where off-the-shelf fruit juices and grenadine will be replaced with house-made syrups and tonics, fermented ingredients and non-alcoholic spirits, making festive beverages that are boozefree but are more sophisticated than seltzer or soda. Check out Töst, a dry, effervescent drink made of white tea, cranberry and ginger, which comes in a wine bottle, so it will feel appropriately celebratory. O. Vine“wine water”, a sparkling water made with grape skins, mimics wine. Dona, a company known for its chai concentrates offers spiced sodas, including pink peppercorn lemon and turmeric honeybush; and Mingle makes sparkling mocktails in flavors such as melon mojito and cranberry cosmo. If you are looking for a simple zero-proof highball, mixologists are changing it up by pairing tonics with spices, herbs and fruits. This crafted beverage, at left is not only beautiful, it’s tasty too, combining grapefruit and rosemary. Add a festive stripped straw and you’ve got an insta-worthy

mocktail.

The mixology craze also has bartenders looking for new flavor profiles, and the world of vegetables and mushrooms provides an interesting array of options. Move over Blood Mary, bartenders will take vegetable cocktails one step further in 2020 and mix in more obscure choices such as tomatillo, chayote, fiddleheads, jicama and sunchoke.

As the line between food and drink grows thinner and savory cocktails grow more popular, watch for strange concoctions with funky flavors including mushrooms such as fungi Irish coffee, mushroom and thyme-infused vodka, and mushroom tea mixed with sparkling wine. Kombucha, a sweet-and-sour drink made with tea and fermented yeast is a naturally fizzy drink expected to rival craft beer. At right, a fresh organic summer cocktail is made with kombucha tea, cucumber and lemon.

The mixology movement is about taking a drink many people already know, and finding new ways to highlight flavors. Referred to as the ‘mixologist’ at the wedding, the bartender can take center stage at the reception and become an entertainment piece for guests. With many standards looking for a deviation, mixologists tend to provide cutting-edge options.

TABLETOP We believe the tabletop design is an element that allows unlimited opportunities to make a bold, impactful statement. For many couples, when they think ‘tabletop design’ their thought process begins and ends with the linen and centerpiece selection. But, tabletop design has so much potential when you think of all the pieces that will be placed on the table and how they can work together to make a truly spectacular environment. Combining various design elements (linens, plates, glasses, centerpieces, chairs, light fixtures, etc.), will help to style each place setting. When designed thoughtfully, your tables can be an immersive and tactile experience for your guests as they sit down for the seated dinner.

When it comes to your tabletop, making a statement does not simply mean adding more pieces to the table. If you like a clean look, juxtaposing styles and textures is a simple way to make your design stand out without it feeling crowded or overwhelming. At left, the decision to place clean and modern gold flatware next to classic light-colored china looks amazing when placed atop the rustic tabletop. Finishing the place setting with a handcrafted place card and floral sprig creates an interesting and eye-catching design.

Just as color is coming back in florals, it’s now playing a big role in tablescapes. From more saturated color options on china, to vintage stemware in vibrant colors, you can now paint with an entirely new palette. Consistently repeating a bold color selection in different

Sergiokat

shades and hues throughout various tabletop elements makes a big statement.

At right, a collection of vintage gold containers blend harmoniously through the china, stemware, flatware and candles. Let the use of a pop of black highlight those elements and opt for an understated yet impactful selection in florals. We love how the just-picked look in florals, pairs with the tabletop elements to create a statement without an over-thetop feel.

Whether you are using a specialty rental flatware set or the standard set provided by your caterer, think about how you can place flatware in an unexpected way on the table. Get creative with the placement and style of your utensils. Flip your flatware face down and lean them onto another element or place them at angles for more visual appeal. Or just switch sides, to keep your guests guessing.

The tabletop design, at left, makes a big statement, but when you look closer, there are just a few enhancements from a standard table setting that make this design so beautiful. Simply swapping out the traditional chair with something special for the couple, like these cowhide high-back chairs, draws attention. Memorable tabletop design is all in the details. Every item should be chosen, placed and coordinated thoughtfully. Select one or two items that will serve as statements within each setting.

STATEMENTS WITHIN EACH SETTING

Rental companies offer a whole range of specialty chair options including these multi-colored velvet chairs at right. This is a relatively simple addition to the table that is sure to make a statement and can be easily coordinated with other elements in your tabletop design.

Think about making the most of your budget and select simple, yet spectacular tabletop elements to make a big statement. A few unique and thoughtful choices can enhance a bland tabletop design into something memorable. Two of our favorite small statement options are the creative use of flatware and non-traditional place cards. These are just two options out of hundreds that will make your tabletops something your guests will be raving about.

BITES Ready to embrace your inner foodie with a culinary journey? Wedding menus have been forever changed thanks to popular TV shows like Top Chef and Chopped. This appetite for something different has changed the wedding culinary scene and now the guest experience includes endless menu options. The desire to have a wedding that is both unique and memorable has also increased the experimentation and creativity with wedding menus.

Couples are fortunate because caterers continue to evolve, taking their cues from the influence of trendy restaurants. Many caterers now offer an expanded range of options; from farm-to-table, vegan and even gluten-free options. Creative culinary design will give your chef an opportunity to play with presentation making your wedding an incredible visual experience. As you are planning your wedding menu, observe and take note while you and your fiancé are dining out. This can be a great source of inspiration!

One of the hottest restaurant crazes for 2020 is seafood. We all love a good charcuterie board, but watch as this year we will see the rise of ‘seacuterie’ instead - using seafood instead of the traditional cured meats and cheeses. This seacuterie platter at left features oysters, mussels and tiger prawns. Consider freshwater options like maple-smoked wild

salmon, smoked rainbow trout or smoked mussels.

The industry continues to evolve in 2020 with global fusion, presentation and serving styles. In the culinary world things move fast, this year global infusion will urge couples to showcase the traditional dishes of each family’s heritage, telling the couple’s story. Whether it’s Italian, French, Asian or Indian, the chef can design the plate and select the right complementing flavor combinations. This trend has catering teams crafting a cultural mosaic from all over the globe.

But let’s face it, now your menu not only needs to taste amazing, it also needs to be instagramable. Chefs are thinking of unique ways to present each course. These verrine appetizers with salmon pate, red caviar, cucumber and capers look amazing on a rustic wooden serving board.

SIMPLE FOODS WITH QUALITY INGREDIENTS COME AMAZING FLAVORS

TOGETHER TO CREATE

The combination of simple foods, with quality ingredients come together to create amazing flavors. If you are a more relaxed and casual couple, watch as the trend also moves towards less fussy foods or clean eating options. Ready for the best newcomer in a range of recipes? Cauliflower has become the most-used carb substitute. A simple course of Cauliflower baked with spices will easily satisfy. Your menu will do the talking when you create a conversation piece by serving something spectacular and unique.

The goal is to spark conversation through food. The fun and interactive aspect of food stations will allow your guests to create their own dishes made from unique ingredients. Think about how you can enhance simple items by making them interactive like a Pad Thai station, live action quesadilla or flatbread station.

ILLUMINATION Lighting has a huge impact on our mood, perception and the overall ambiance of any given environment. Think about the difference in lighting between your favorite restaurant, bar or spa and that of a club or concert. We associate different lighting tones with different feelings and attitudes. You can control the ‘mood’ of your wedding by taking advantage of the variety of lighting options available today. These options can transform any space and make your venue completely customized. Evaluate the space you have to work with, then decide the ambiance you want to create.

For decades the intense flicker of candle light has signified the sophisticated, warm and romantic feel that most couples desire for their wedding reception. But even the selection of light bulbs can have a significant impact on the overall effect. To create the warm glow of amber, similar to the effect of hundreds of glowing candles, you can use Edison bulbs. These vintage inspired filament bulbs are now widely available and come in a series of shapes and wattage. Their tone pairs well with candlelight and has a warmer glow than florescent bulbs. Lighting can take on graphic forms, drawing attention to important elements of the evening like marquee style letters constructed of rusted metal and Italian lights. The ‘Whiskey’ letters at left bring attention to this luxe whiskey bar.

Lauren B Photography

Something as easy as a directional sign doesn’t just assist guests, but also allows for the element to be an architecturally designed accent piece. The soft glow of Italian lights conjures up memories of summer nights and the casual ambiance of a great cafe.

Chandeliers continue to gain popularity and with the immense variety in lighting inventory from rental companies there are unlimited options. Whether you’re going for a classic, rustic, urban or glamorous look, there is a chandelier for you! If you have high ceilings, adding a series of chandeliers can really help to bring the space in and make it feel more intimate.

If you are aiming to achieve an edgy effect that emulates the atmosphere of a trendy club, think about other unique illumination options aside from chandeliers. We love transforming everyday pieces into memorable light fixtures. At right, the use of blue LED lights creates a statement when combined with balloons to emulate the feel of an upscale club or lounge.

EVERYDAY PIECES

Illumination is a great way to call attention to other decor and design choices. Think about the flowers, furnishings, and structural elements at your venue and why you fell in love with all of these individual elements. Once you have designated these elements as focal points, think about how you can make these pieces even more memorable and eye-catching through illumination.

One effective way to call attention to specific design elements is to uplight walls. Make a bigger impact by having your decor and lighting work together. By dimming the lighting and spotlighting your tables, the details of the tabletop

Our properties provide warm and elegant backdrops to love stories - love stories as unique as the couple at the center of it. TRAVEL There is almost no limit on destinations, types of experiences and ways to travel; from cultural tourism to culinary excursions, but the one common thread is travelers are seeking new and authentic experiences. Let’s face it, of all the wedding details, the honeymoon is probably the most exciting part to plan. Where is the best place to celebrate your marriage and wind-down after all the activity leading up to the big day? Right now, almost everyone is talking about cultural tourism and adventure travel, so why not incorporate this trend into your honeymoon plans.

This year, travels took us to UNICO 20˚N 87˚W, where we shared our experiences in real time with those that follow us on social media. Our adventures in Riviera Maya were over the top! Our team enjoyed a week of both fun and relaxation at UNICO, an all-inclusive luxury resort and we wanted to share our favorite parts of the stay with you.

We have to admit the arrival was one of the most memorable experiences. The check in was very personable. Standing at the registration desk? Oh, no. Not at Unico! After arriving you are asked to be seated in their lobby lounge while your personal valet greets you and checks you into the hotel. Not only is it a personal touch but it gets even better when a nice cold beverage and cool towel is given to you at arrival. And, just when you thought this was amazing, you are asked to select one of the six aromatherapy candle

scents you would like for freshening your room throughout your stay.

But as foodies, the culinary adventure was important to us. Seriously, hands down UNICO provides the most amazing culinary experiences. Their series of à la carte restaurants are top notch. It was like enjoying five-star dining each day. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but we loved the ambiance of Mi Carisa, with cuisine that features an Italian costal flair.

We loved that every space throughout the property, including the restaurants, incorporate well thought-out design. The interiors of each are unique and inspiring, each feel like a mini-excursion on a week of adventures. The lobby, at right, featured a casual but high-end aesthetic that was repeated throughout the resort.

WHAT CAN YOU DREAM OF?

At UNICO, the spa is one of the best features! From the amazing hydrotherapy experience to beautiful suites overlooking the jungle for the perfect massage, we don’t know what could be more relaxing. Our team started the trip off with manicures and pedicures, so we’d also recommend the salon which is adjacent to the spa when you arrive.

The rooms were beautiful with lots of custom touches and the ability to personalize. There is the option to go to the Spa and custom select products you would like to use during your stay for your room – how cool is that?!? Another service that they offer is a pillow menu to find the best fit. Each room had either a deck with a jetted soaker tub or a swim up patio. One of the final great features in the room were cozy hooded robes and slippers just waiting for you.

INSPIRATION:VICTORIAN DREAM Destination weddings can take you to distant locals, but they can also transcend time, taking you and your guests to a bye-gone era. Inspired by the grand living at the turn of the 20th century? Consider a wedding at the Rippon Lea House and Garden, one of Australia’s grand suburban estates complete with a pleasure garden of sweeping lawns, magnificent trees and a tranquil lake. Located just outside Melbourne, this venue offers a dream-like ambiance with classic gardens, an orchard and fernery. Rippon Lea Estate is a heritage-listed estate built in 1868 by Frederick Sargood. The venue is Australia’s last suburban 19th century estate.

Elegance and magnificence combine in this awe-inspiring estate set on 14 acres, creating the perfect surroundings for a Victorian-styled wedding. Imagine guests mingling around the grand piano in the Drawing Room or sipping champagne in the Conservatory, then relaxing in the afternoon splendor around the pool. Tranquillity and blissfulness followed by a romantic picnic by the lake.

Select a color palette that is light, classic and timeless with soft tones of ivory, blush, daisy, beige, green and burgundy. A color theme which remains very soft throughout, balances the introduction of a bolder, yet classic and preppy color, burgundy found in the heritage Sephory Photography

bricks and repeated in the groom’s suit.

Setting the table with unbleached linens, unadorned flatware and speckled pottery, luxurious crockery and fine china will give the look a romantic yet updated feel. Add in the look of unpressed linen napkins for a relaxed and casual vibe. The mix of metals will also keep a trend-forward look while playing with the eclecticism of the Victorian era. To complete this look, keep the florals simple and understated. The small arrangement included soft sun-kissed spar roses, grasses and dainty baby’s breath.

A traditional English wedding takes place in the morning, followed by the wedding breakfast. Plan a menu that includes all the quintessential Victorian and British-influenced dishes including classic scones, jam and cream, tea, biscuits, tarts, strawberries and other fine desserts.

START WITH THE HEAD TABLE AS A WORK OUTWARD FROM THERE

FOCAL POINT AND

Invitations used for this theme could include timeless blind-embossing. Consider a delicate monogram crest motif or combination of a classic serif font combined with a script font printed in black on plush cotton stock. A great look, at right, when tied together with a black ribbon. Consider ceremony cards created using a handheld fan design, holding all the stationery cards within the one fan, and tied together with a tassel tieback. Gold embossed menus tied with a classic gold tassel and name card will finish off the reception tables.

Old-world romance can be styled into the wedding day using vintage stemware and silver champagne buckets on silver trays, at left, to create the feel of days gone bye. Classic elements of Chippendale tables and mix-matched finery are indicative of this romantic

Victorian aesthetic.

To complete the look, think romantic sheer and flowy gowns with high necks and bishop sleeves, like this flowy angel wing gown by L’ETO Bridal, at left. Vintage style drop-pearl earrings, signature crystal bridal heels, and a black velvet bow in the hair or a fishtail updo, with baby’s breath weaved in create a romantic feel. Make up should mimic the natural and soft style, with rose and peach tones. A preppy vintage suit with pinstriped jacket, at left, is reminiscent of the Victorian era.

Escaping from the crowd after the celebration, set up a romantic picnic surprise. Write love letters to remember the perfect day, then relax in the shadows of the over arching trees.

YOUR DESIGN

INSPIRATION: NOIR Taking a cue from fashion, a modern look can often incorporate a touch of black. But threading black as the dominate palate can create a sleek and clean wedding design. Adaptation of other cultures continues to bring new ideas for weddings and borrowed customs help to create signature style. Each step of this wedding day was infused with natural and earthy environments. Centered on the Zen principles of design with signature Asian-inspired elements, this wedding design reflects the states of active calm, solitude and tranquillity with a color palette of blacks, purples, pinks and ivories.

Black calla lilies can make a bold statement when hand-tied for the bridal bouquet, at left. While called Zantedeschia Black, these gorgeous trumpet-shaped flowers feature striking, dark, almost-black purple blooms rising elegantly on sturdy stems. Blending with a bridal gown with back embroidery accents, you have a modern interpretation that is insta-fabulous. The textures of orchids, blend perfectly with the thick petal of the black calla lilies. Covering surfaces with rich, dark floral arrangements and burning candles will create a sophisticated and romantic mood.

Sephory Photography

Black finishes tie in with the trend we have been scouting in home interiors and fashion; both in the tone and materials we used. For reception design, we suggest you start with the head table as a focal point. A luxe marble dining table becomes a show-stopper.

For this design, the harvest-style head table creates a large focal point featuring a sophisticated gloss finish. Each place setting was dressed with precision. The Zen principle, Kanso, dictates that beauty and utility need not be overstated, overly decorative or fanciful. The overall effect is clean, fresh and neat. It incorporates naturally occurring patterns and rhythms.

Each meticulously set place setting, at left, features a trio of sparkling glassware with a stemless glass pairing perfectly with two additional stemmed glasses. Asian-inspired china in matte black make the perfect accompaniment to the black metal flatware.

A petite wedding cake, at right, in deep purple with dripping chocolate ganache makes a modern statement when placed upon a black cake pedestal. Repeating

Sephory Photography

themes throughout your design creates effortless drama. The cake mimicked the clean design of the tabletop.

To soften the look of the table, lush florals dance down the length of the long table. Bulbus glass vases are combined with concrete containers featuring a stylized floral that included a combination of clustered Phalaenopsis orchids, burgundy rubber plant leaves, black Baccara roses and hypericum berries. The clean shapes paired with the natural element of orchids in concrete containers, lined in unison down the center of the long table, create a striking statement.

To add some sparkle and lighten the tablescape, scattered pillar candles dance down the length of the table. Each place setting is accented with a place card tied to a delicious bonbon in a sleek clear acrylic box.

In a beautifully luxe unification, black on black menus featured the rich foiling of the text on the thick black stock.

CAN MAKE THE PERFECT PAIRING

BLACK ON BLACK

Upon arrival of guests, consider serving pomegranate ginger palomas delivered by waiters in tuxedos and black velvet bow ties. Consider Asian-inspired canapĂŠs of black rice crisp, ocean trout, salmon pearls, celery cress; seared Port Phillip Bay scallop with coconut and sweet pumpkin, salsify and shiso; and camomile tea smoked quail taro chip, quince relish on smoke mirrored trays.

A menu of multiple courses served on striking black plates can entertain guests throughout the evening. A mix of beautiful colors is presented as the first course – a beetroot cured Huon salmon, at right, is paired with charred leek, snowcrab celeriac, green apple remoulade, compressed cucumbers, fresh horseradish and basil oil. Violet blossoms add a touch of purple color to the artistically designed plating.

This striking design melds a beautifully minimalist aesthetic with a modern look for a contemporary wedding

INSPIRATION: NOSTALGIA Hues of blushing pink, pure white and rich greenery create a wistful, soft and romantic, classic French-inspired feel. Envision old aged rooms, washed out decor, light coral walls, baby blue windows and the antique gold details of a dreamy local. When paired with blooming peonies, lush greenery, soft silk fabrics, ripped edge papers and an opulent atmosphere you create the dreamy melancholy romanticism of a classic European-inspired wedding design.

These details come together in a mixture of materials from glimmering china plates with delicate gold filigree and classic gold edging to ornate sterling silver trays with baroque stylings. Fine white cotton linens with fringe tassel trim create the perfect milieu for this rich classic look.

Choosing the right setting will help with your design. Think of incorporating ancient gold details with rich textures of wood and cobblestone. The elegant style of handwritten notes

Sephory Photography

like the one at left, make for a romantic staging when penned in robin-egg blue ink.

A pale blue font on thick cotton cards, at left, create a beautiful and classic wedding invitation. The pieces are tied together with gold string and fastened with a gold wax seal. A series of postage stamps in various denominations continues the vintage effect on the mailing envelope.

The menu, at right, also in blue ink on a torn edge cotton paper looks smart when tied with sheer pink ribbon and a sprig of greenery. Set upon a classic set of white china with decorative trim, the menu becomes framed by the ornate filigree of the stacked plates. A luxurious bengaline linen in mint creates an elegant background for the guest tables. Simple starters of artisan crackers and breads look stunning on natural wood

breadboards.

By using a vibrant palette of blush pink, pure white, gentle pastel hues and natural greenery, a perfect French-European romantic look was achieved. The mesmerizing flower arrangements including Calamondin orange branches create a botanical feel to the arrangement that also features hydrangea, spray roses and mixed greens.

Weathered metal arm chairs make a beautiful duet table for the couple. Sprigs of green elm branches and Amaranthus create a show-stopping chair back. A white-washed wooden table, at left, is set with fine china and tiered dessert plates. These feature a series of pastel macaroons, fruit tartlets and French pastries while wire birdcages hold bright colored citrus fruits, creating a beautiful backdrop.
