NETWORKING GUIDE Network with Purpose

In order to maximise your time in networking events, it is critical to identify your purpose. For first year students, this may function as an invaluable opportunity to discover and consolidate the myriad of career options available to you. It is a chance to discover what your degree is capable of and how to maximise your potential through the studies and activities that you can get involved in. For later year students, the luncheon offers a window into applying for internships or graduate level positions at the sponsors’ firms. Your purpose may be as simple as getting your foot in the door; getting to know representatives on the “inside” will bolster your application process through discussing the skills and qualities desired. Likewise, this is also an opportunity to question whether or not a particular field is suitable to your tastes.

Research – Be Informed

Being informed about the sponsors allows you to initiate discussions which go beyond what is considered “public knowledge”. Whilst information is available from sources such as their website to formulate a basic understanding of the firm, view this event as an opportunity to ask questions which are more specific in nature. As such, it is highly advisable to take time and research the sponsors that are coming to an event, with particular attention those who you are interested in. Topics of interest may include: n n n

Graduate and Internship positions Organisational culture and aims Global/Domestic programs and opportunities

From here, you should be able to formulate questions and/or topics of discussion for the representatives that are tailored to both your interests and theirs. Make note of the qualities which you have; identifying your own strengths and talents goes a long way in finding yourself. Remember that solid preparation is akin to having an infallible plan – it provides you with confidence when conversing with sponsor representatives and allows you to be well-versed and memorable.

Track Your Contacts

Make sure you have a simple method in keeping track of the people you meet! Continue your newfound connections through email, LinkedIn, etc so that you can contact people which sparked your interest. Finally, remember to talk to everybody! Making new friends and new contacts is an integral part of any networking event. Make the most of any networking event and GOOD LUCK!

Every company and even teams within a company will have their own expectations and culture when it comes to dress. Most firms do have the tradition of having smart casual Fridays. It’s important that you are comfortable in your outfit and everything fits to show your best side. There is nothing worse than fidgeting with your attire or accessories when you are in a professional environment and you’re dressed to impress!

The Recruitment Process As with every step towards the future comes an inevitable ambivalence. But the hike through the recruitment process should be one where you are knowledgeable of the terrain, well equipped with the right materials, and most importantly, driven by a motivated and perceptive mind set. 1. Online Application

cultural fit. Your cover letter should display:

The online application usually includes the CV and Cover Letter as well as a series of a series of questions for you to answer.

Your motivation to work for the particular firm and division Your capability for the role shown through your skills and experience Your cultural fit for the organisation through an understanding of its values Common pitfalls:

Curriculum Vitae: An effective CV is one that is relevant and specific to the job. When preparing your CV, make sure you research and understand the position (how you match the requirements) and showcase your achievements (why you are a strong candidate). Top tips: n Be succinct - use no more than 2 A4 pages n Use assertive and positive language n Ask someone else to read over your CV Sample CV Structure: n Heading n Personal Profile n Experience n Achievements n Career History n Personal Details n Education and Qualifications Cover letter: A strong cover letter is an employer’s segway into understanding your suitability for a role as well as your

10

BUSINESS CAREERS GUIDE 2016 UNSWBSOC.COM

n Spelling and grammatical errors n Poor balance between claiming responsibility and identifying achievement n Excessive personal information (such as race, religion, marital status and nationality) n Convoluted formatting

2. Aptitude, Personality and Psychometric Testing There are three main aptitude and psychometric tests: n Numerical - measures your ability to interpret, analyse and draw logical conclusions from numerical information in graphs and tables

n Verbal - measures your ability to use the English language, understand verbal information and convey information to others in a clear and logical manner. n Logical - measures your ability to draw logical conclusions based on statements or arguments and to identify relevant strengths and weaknesses of those arguments

n Have a pen and paper ready for note taking n Have prepared a quiet place where you can take the call n If you are called at an inconvenient time, ask if you can talk at another time and suggest alternatives

Assessment Centre

n If you wish to get some practice or get an idea of what the tests are like, hop on to http:// www.shldirect.com/en/practice-tests

Assessment centres are a collection of tests and exercises designed to emulate a firm’s business environment. They aim to generate objective information about candidates in regards to attributes such as problem solving, team work and also fit within an organisation’s structure and culture. During each activity, a group of trained observers will rate individual candidates on a range of competencies using a prescribed performance scale. An assessment centre generally runs from ½ to 2 days.

Available Resources:

Key tips

n UNSW Library has books that contain practice psychometric tests

n Show your enthusiasm! n Don’t just do it - show the assessors you’re doing it (remember to contribute to discussions but avoid being domineering) n If any group presentation is involved, spend the last 5 minutes of planning time to allocate talking points n Know your assessment criteria n Relax and be yourself

Personality tests: Personality tests are designed to assess how you operate and are becoming increasingly prevalent as part of the hiring process. They are designed to measure your behavioural style, opinions and motivators.

n UNSW Careers and Employment also holds regular psychometric tests workshops which give some guidance on how to go about answering questions.

Phone/Video Interview

Interviews

Phone Interview: Generally conducted by the HR team, phone interviews can be both scheduled and unscheduled. The questions asked may vary from behavioural and motivational ones to questions about the relevant industry. Potential questions include: n Why do you want this role and what differentiates you from other candidates? n What is your greatest achievement? n What are your greatest weaknesses? n What is the most important thing you’re looking for in a job/company? Video Interview: An OAI is a video interview completed at a time and date of your own choosing. Using a webcam or a device with a front-facing camera, you will be required to answer questions set by the interviewer. Top Tips n Keep your resume in clear view

Top tip: when answering situation based questions remember to use the STAR technique. Situation: Provide context Task: what was required of you Action: what you actually did Result: how the situation turned out (remember to quantify any successes where possible) Competency Interview Competency interviews are used to evaluate a candidate’s key competencies, especially where it is difficult to select based on technical merit. Questions may delve into a particular skill or competency or knowledge of the firm and the industry as opposed to questions about industry experience. Partner Interview An interview run by a partner of the respective firm. Generally these interviews are used to assess a candidate’s personality fit for a firm.

Individual Assessments

BUSINESS CAREERS GUIDE 2016 UNSWBSOC.COM

11

Guides | Majors | Industry | Interviews In-Tray/Written Exercise Assesses: Ability to organise and prioritise work, analytical skills, communication with team members, written communication and delegation. This simulation exercise is designed for a candidate to emulate the role of an employee. The candidate will be asked to solve problems and make decisions based on a number of letters and memos. Verification Test You will simply be asked to retake one of the online tests you did in the earlier stage of the recruitment process to ensure that you did not cheat. The test calculates the similarity rate of your results, as opposed to how well you do.

Group Assessments

Group Activity Assesses: Leadership, teamwork, negotiation and problem solving. Group activities involve candidates working together to resolve a presented issue. This generally involves formulating a strategy based on given information and analysing its merits and weaknesses. Example: Tower Building Exercise A group may be asked to design and build a tower in accordance with a construction brief which may stipulate minimum height, time period the completed tower must stand unsupported, time limit and budget. Case Studies Assesses: Ability to analyse complex data and issues, seek solutions, project plan, find solutions and general commercial awareness. In case studies, candidates are generally provided with information about a work-related scenario. The task may involve examining the information before presenting the findings and solutions. Example: The scenario:A publisher of scientific journals and books is looking to make a significant acquisition. It has identified a target company and approached a number of investment banks for their views on the merits of a potential deal and a target price. Based on these presentations, the publisher will decide whether to proceed with

12

BUSINESS CAREERS GUIDE 2016 UNSWBSOC.COM

a bid and, if so, select one bank to act as their adviser. The task: Your team is one of the investment banks bidding to win the mandate. You need to analyse the figures provided; to review the marketplace, your potential client (the publisher) and the target company; and to prepare a five-minute presentation giving your recommendations, eg whether to go ahead, go ahead under specific conditions, etc.

Further Interviews/Networking Sessions For more competitive industries there can be up to 8 rounds of interviews. A lot of companies are now incorporating networking sessions into their recruitment process to see how students interact with other students and professionals. If you’re not comfortable with talking to industry professionals (especially those in very senior positions), it helps to go to networking events held by firms to get in some practice and become accustomed to networking etiquette. n

ACCOUNTING What is Accounting? Accounting can be defined as the systematic, recording, reporting and analysis of financial transactions of a business. It’s concerned with the provision of information for the management of economic resources by means of measurement, communication and interpretation of financial data; with the development of information systems; and with the

financial accountability and governance of enterprises. Accounting information is increasingly used to manage intangible resources such as an organisations knowledge base, its supplier/customer relationships and its brands. Accounting concepts lie at the heart of economic exchange, whether

conducted in physical or electronic markets. It enables students to comprehend fundamental principles, processes and outcomes of business, thereby equipping students for a wide range of career such as chartered accounting, management consulting, and provision of financial services to general management.

Professional Accreditation: The Path To Becoming An Accountant CPA Australia has accepted specific UNSW undergraduate courses for the purpose of its membership qualifications. Associate membership of CPA Australia requires the minimum qualification of an accredited undergraduate degree with a major in accounting, and completion of accredited courses in accounting, finance and business areas to satisfy the minimum core knowledge requirements. Students may confirm academic entry requirements for the CPA Program with CPA Australia at https:// www.cpaaustralia.com.au/ManageApplications/AccreditedCourse.mvc/

SearchAccreditedCourses There are two pathways into the Chartered Accountants Program. Graduates who have completed an accredited and approved university degree that covers prerequisite subjects in ten knowledge areas can apply for the Program. A non-accounting degree graduate or a graduate requiring further study in one or more of the knowledge areas can enter the Program after completing the CA Foundations Program. Candidates will need to be employed for at least 17.5 hours per week in a relevant

accounting role. Two modules may be completed while not employed, but this does lengthen the time taken to complete the CA Program. The Mentored Practical Experience Program should ideally run in parallel to candidate study, to provide executive coaching and support. For more details on the Chartered Accountants Program, please see www.charteredaccountants.com.au/ Candidates/The-Chartered-Accountants-Program/Entry-requirements/ Accredited-courses

ACTUARIAL STUDIES What is Actuarial Studies? Best known for its disposition for data, this discipline serves as a foundation for the deep analytical skills that shape the business world. It is a major whereby your talents are continuously stimulated in high pressure roles and situations to solve real world problems through evidencebased decision making. As such, Actuarial Studies is innately driven by one’s ability to evaluate risk and opportunity through the application of mathematical and financial analysis to a spectrum of social, business

valued analytical capabilities.

An actuary’s skills are most commonly applied in evaluating the likelihood of future events and utilising financial analysis and risk models within the traditional fields of superannuation, consultancy, general and life insurance. A career as an actuary is one of the most rigorous fields in business as a result of the time and persistence required to attain accreditation from the Actuaries Institute. BUSINESS LAW What is Business Law? Business Law focuses on the legal requirements underpinning and regulating all forms of commercial activity. It explores the concept of business morality and the responsibility of company directors and boards to make ethical business decisions. The purpose of business law is to protect consumers by providing legal guidelines for fairtrading, franchising, e-business, commercial contracts and business transactions. With the increase of globalisation and deregulation, the laws governing business are becoming more complex. Therefore, it is important for all those in business to understand the implications of their actions in a legal context. Business Law is only offered as a major by the Australian School of Business for students enrolled in Commerce or Economics degrees. The Business Law major is designed for students who are interested in commercial law rather than entering legal practice. It provides students with an understanding of an organization’s legal obligations. This major only requires one compulsory subject TABL1710 and students are able to choose 7 electives where at least 3 of the electives are level 3 courses.

Professional Accreditation: Business Law Majors Professional institutions require prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level in order to enrol in the professional accreditation courses. Professional Institutions • CPA Australia (CPA) • Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ)

Prerequisite courses: • TABL1710 – Business and the Law • TABL2741 – Business Entities • TABL2751 – Business Taxation

ECONOMICS What is Economics? Unlike other Commerce graduates who are mostly demanded within the private sector, positions for Economics graduates are readily available both in the private and public sector. Being an economist requires good research and analytical skills along with being able to communicate effectively. Economists provide advisory services and forecasts for governments and businesses on economic issues such as the level of inflation and unemployment, interest rates, exchange rates, etc. More recently, there has been an increasing emphasis on the sustainable development of our natural resources. Increasing

16

awareness of the impact of climate change has increased opportunities to work in this area, which involves policy analysis, cost benefit analysis as well as socioeconomic research. Within the private sector, economists observe the impact of domestic and international market movements on businesses. An economics degree is highly synergistic with a variety of other degrees, providing useful supplementaryAn economics degree is highly synergistic with a variety of other degrees, providing useful supplementary information. and analysis techniques such as regression. Some financial firms also hire economists as consultants, the techniques covered in an econometrics degree allowing you to analyse market statistics and determine trends. It can also provide the basis for specialisations in the career paths of other degrees, such as public policy for a financial firm, and or as an economics teacher at a university.

FINANCE

Guides | Majors | Industry | Interviews

What is Finance? Finance is the management and acquisition of money and other financial assets in domestic and international financial markets. It is concerned with investment decisions, valuing financial assets, managing funds and developing strategies to minimize financial risk. Because individuals, businesses and government entities all need funding to operate, the field is often separated into three subcategories: personal finance, corporate finance and public finance. Personal finance involves individual financing such as paying for education, financing durable goods such as real estate and cars as well as buying insurance (e.g health and property insurance), investing and saving for retirement. Corporate finance deals with the sources of funding and the capital structure of corporations and actions that managers take to increase the value of the firm to shareholders. This also involves tools and analysis used to allocate financial resources. As for public finance, in addition to managing money for its day-to-day operations, a government body also has larger social responsibilities. Its goals include attaining an equitable distribution of income for its citizens and enacting policies that lead to a stable economy. Financial Services is one of the most competitive fields in Commerce (especially Investment Banking). Strong numerical skills, analytical, teamwork and communication skills are a must. A career in finance opens you up to a dynamic and fast-paced environment, global mobility, and the development of niche skills. However, if you decide to work

in an investment bank you should be prepared for long hours and a pressure-intense environment as your team will be handling a lot of time sensitive deals. CPA Australia has accepted specific UNSW undergraduate courses for the purpose of its membership qualifications. Associate membership of CPA Australia requires the minimum qualification of an accredited undergraduate degree with a major in accounting, and completion of accredited courses in accounting, finance and business areas to satisfy the minimum core knowledge requirements. HUMAN RESOURCES What is Human Resources? Human Resource Management (HRM) is the strategic approach to managing an organisation’s employees and the workplace environment and culture. It is based on the premise that the most progressive business strategy can only be executed effectively when employee performance is maximised and are committed to the organisation’s objectives. HRM is also the organisational function that provides leadership and advice for dealing with all issues related to the people in

an organization. HRM involves compensation, hiring, performance management, organisation development, safety, wellness, benefits, employee motivation, communication, administration and training. In recent years, HRM is moving away from traditional personnel and administration roles. The HRM function is expected to be a value add to the organisation through the strategic utilisation of employees and to manage/monitor employee programs implemented.

he HRM major is designed for students who are interested in a career in human resources or managing employees, and complements studies in Finance, International Business or Business Law, as well as Psychology in a combined degree with science or arts.

Professional Accreditation: Australian Human Resource Institute The National Accreditation Committee (NAC) of the Australian Human Resources Institute for its membership program has accredited the following qualifications in Human Resource Management. INFORMATION SYSTEMS What is Information Systems? Technology has become ubiquitous in our everyday lives, from meeting our personal needs to meeting the business needs of an organisation - it’s all there. Information Systems blends together the business and information technology to meet increasing demand for professionals who understand the interaction between these two aspects of an organisation. Technology is often the foundation for management’s vision of a company. Information systems graduates often go into consulting or business analytics, as they have a deep understanding of the client 18

or company’s underlying business problems. They are responsible for bridging the gap between businesses and technology, ensuring requirements are met and projects run smoothly. Consultants and business analysts play an important role in shaping the future of an organisation, although their specific role varies from company to company, from being responsible for managing complex enterprise architecture to upgrading to a new system to improve the flow of information. An Information Systems major is versatile and flexible, with its impact

BUSINESS CAREERS GUIDE 2016 UNSWBSOC.COM

reaching from operational management all the way to top management. With multiple avenues to pave the way for organisational success, there is plenty of opportunity within the information systems spectrum. A thorough understanding of a company’s information systems and its processes can enable a company to grow faster and realise the benefits.

MANAGEMENT

Guides | Majors | Industry | Interviews

What is Management? The management field caters towards those who have a propensity towards building and developing relationships between people and organisations. The discipline deviates from the sometimes narrow focus on specific tasks, and instead examines the complex relationships between the power, people and resources within organisations in order to establish and maintain effective management. As such, those who wish to pursue a management career must understand the critical aspects involved in formulating goals, designing organisations structures, fostering innovation and regulating resources. Furthermore, the discipline extends into the consideration of human capital as both individuals and groups; evaluating and redefining theories and predictions regarding new organisational forms, future business

What is accounting ?

One of the frequent limitations of a career in management accounting is the limited careers progression as there are only a handful of people in the accounting departments of an organisation. This results in many professionals to join the larger accounting firms and professional services firms instead. ensure it meets their expectations.

Accounting can be defined as the recording and reporting of the financial transactions of the business. However, the role of an accountant is rapidly evolving and is gradually more involved in the running of a company. Forming a vital link between the front office revenue and upper management decision making, the accounting financial statement literacy acts as the lifeblood of an organisation and is a vital skill to many areas of the business. Every business needs accountants, which is why it comes as no surprise accounting remains the most popular major studies in the UNSW Business School. Accounting also represents a relatively stable profession in an increasingly volatile economic environment. The accounting departments of companies are all tailored to the unique requirements of each business. Typically, these departments will be responsible for internal and external reporting; their roles often involving interaction with other divisions of the business. Among these are HR, finance and marketing. Roles and responsibilities will vary greatly from business to business so it is imperative for aspiring employees to research the job they are interested in and to ensure it meets their expectations. Management Accounting Management Accounting involves working in a company providing accounting services and information primarily for internal processes utilised by managers. This includes preparing reports and accounts that provide timely and reliable financial information to assist managers in making short term decisions. Unlike financial accounting, the main stakeholders are an organisation’s internal audiences such as department leaders and managers who are able to use the weekly and monthly reports to improve operations within the organisations through key indicators such as available cash,

Within their service lines, these firms are often split into the industry of clients they service. This structure gives graduates the opportunity to gain exposure to the different ways clients do business within an industry. CPA Australia Interview

Guides | Majors | Industry | Interviews

CPA Chief Operating Officer, Adam Awty How has the CPA accreditation impacted your professional opportunities in your previous/ current role? Being a CPA has opened doors for me throughout my career. Because my CPA designation is recognised and valued by employers here in Australia and right around the world, I’ve had opportunities in my career I wouldn’t have had without being a CPA. I have been lucky enough to work across a diversity of sectors and gather experiences that really add to the value I bring in my role as COO at CPA Australia. I have also started expanding my career to take on non-executive director roles which is a challenging and exciting opportunity. How has your experience as a CPA equipped you with the skills required in the accounting and finance industry? The work you need to do during an undergraduate degree hones your technical accounting skills – the work you need to do to achieve your CPA designation takes your skills to the next level in terms of strategic application and leadership. The CPA program teaches you the importance of governance and ethics in the modern business era and gives you the skills needed to lead businesses of the future. CPAs are brilliant accountants, but they also often end up becoming leaders in the businesses they work in because of their strategic focus and leadership qualities.

CPA Australia has a strong focus on continuous education and professional development, as a CPA you are always learning and refining your skills. What was the most exciting and interesting part in working towards your CPA? The CPA program was incredibly stimulating as it exposed me to things I didn’t learn as part of my undergraduate degree. I really enjoyed the challenge of learning what it means to be an accountant in practice and how to bring value to a business. CPAs become tomorrow’s leaders because of the solid foundations gained in working towards the designation. Do you have any final tips for students who want to complete their CPA in the future? Don’t wait. The CPA designation will help you stand out from the crowd. It is globally recognised, locally relevant and employers understand the value CPAs bring to their business. CPA Australia also has an amazing network with offices in 10 countries always there to support you on your journey.

Entry into the CA Program requires an approved undergraduate degree with study in core knowledge areas. A non-accounting degree graduate or a graduate requiring further study in one or more of the knowledge areas can enter the Program after completing modules from the CA Foundations Program. Candidates will need to be employed for at least 17.5 hours per week in a relevant accounting role with an approved employer. The Mentored Practical Experience Program should ideally run in parallel to candidate study, to provide executive coaching and support. Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand Interview

Financial Accountant, Michelle Mak

Tell us about your role at Lion and any challenges that you have experienced? Both my roles in Deloitte (I was an external auditor for three years) and as a Financial Accountant at Lion have definitely come with some eye opening challenges. There is such a steep learning curve whenever you start something new and I learnt very early on to give any knowledge gaps some research online (or hardcopy resources) and be open to asking questions. Challenges were commonly around communicating messages to different stakeholders and learning to appreciate the financial background someone might have before bombarding them with acronyms and terms that they can’t connect with.

My experiences in attaining my CA qualification have definitely built on skills required in this industry. I have developed detailed technical knowledge beyond what university offered and also developed strong communication and teamwork skills. Many of the Chartered Accountants Program modules require self-discipline, time management (working all day and then studying at night/ weekends) and motivation to study – soft skills that are definitely useful and required in the workforce.

How has the CA Accreditation impacted your professional opportunities in your previous/current role?

What was the most exciting and interesting part in working towards your CA?

I definitely wouldn’t be in my current role as a Financial Accountant if I did not have my CA designation as this is a prerequisite for my current job title. Getting accredited is another highly recognised qualification above your tertiary studies and is well regarded globally. Many finance based jobs require a benchmark level of accounting knowledge and the CA accreditation gives employers the comfort that you have the right technical abilities. To put it into perspective – I’ll be moving to the UK in a few months knowing that my CA qualification helps me get my foot in the door with accounting roles overseas.

I loved having the opportunity to network with other accountants outside my day to day job and learning things that I could directly apply at work. Chartered Accountants ANZ also run many social events you can attend – I particularly enjoyed getting involved in their annual sports tournaments and working on a friendly rivalry with other companies (especially when big 4 accountants play against each other).

How has your experience as a CA equipped you with the skills required in the accounting and finance industry?

Deloitte Interview

Senior Consultant (Strategy & Operations), Amanda Bott What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role? I am a Senior Consultant in the Strategy & Operations consulting team at Deloitte, focused on TMT and Consumer Business strategy. My role on any particular project is to understand a client’s problem, formulate an approach, and manage a stream of work to solve it. Depending on the size of the project, I will have senior team members (Partner and Directors) to help me shape the approach to the problem and review as we go, and junior team members (Analysts and Consultants) who I am responsible for managing to complete different tasks on the project. Can you tell us a little about Deloitte’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? At Deloitte, one of our mottos is “Playful with Serious Intent”. I think this embodies the culture in consulting. The work we do generally has high stakes for us and for our clients – so, we take our jobs seriously and expect high quality work from ourselves and each other. We also make a habit of taking time to connect with our team and our clients – whether it is over a team dinner or quick game of ping pong in the office! How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? I started as a Graduate in consulting, after a Bachelor in Commerce (Liberal Studies). I think my work best related to the way university teaches you to think, as opposed to the specific material you studied. While my finance and economics background was useful to me, being able to think critically about a problem and communicate in a structured way gave me a good start for consulting.

What surprised you when you first came into your role? I was surprised by the people sitting across the table. Given I was a new graduate, I thought it would be quite a few months before I had the opportunity to work with clients directly. I was surprised when, a month into my very first project, I was attending meetings with Executive level client stakeholders and answering questions on the analysis I was doing. Do you have any advice for someone applying for Deloitte? Don’t be afraid to be different. At Deloitte, we know that to solve the most complex problems, we need different perspectives and true diversity of thought. Trust me – I helped to write our firm-wide Diversity & Inclusion strategy – we believe having diverse talent will be critical to navigating an increasingly complex business world. So… don’t try to fit the mould – break the mould! Do you have any advice for someone interested in the consulting industry? Before you dive into applications and interviews, give a good deal of thought to why you’re interested in consulting – be it dealing with complex problems, helping clients through difficult business situations, being thrown in the deep end with every new project.… Understanding this will help you pinpoint what type of consulting you are most interested in (so you know where to apply) and communicate why you are the right candidate (so we know that you understand what the job is really about, and not just the title).

Consulting What is consulting? Consulting is an industry largely focused on client satisfaction and analytical thinking ability. This stems from the requirement of consulting firms to be continually bringing in and retaining clients in order to generate revenue. As a result, consultants must have impressive domain knowledge and specialise to some extent in some particular industry. They must also be skilled at networking and well-connected within the industry in order to maintain and expand their firm’s clientele base. Consequently communication skills are paramount, as they need to convey actionable recommendations in a concise manner to their typically time poor clients. Firms in management consulting provide advice and assistance to businesses and other organisations on management issues. The management consulting industry is common segmented into several tiers, which are generally differentiated by the size of their clientele, as well as whether their work is primarily strategic or implementation focused. The top tier of firm focuses on corporate and business strategy of some of the world’s largest firms. Mid-tier strategy consulting firms are engaged in similar work but additionally focus on technology strategy. Other consulting firms are more focused on the implementation of these strategies, leveraging their extensive technology experience to implement computer systems that optimise operations, supply chain and logistics. ested in and to ensure it meets their expectations.

Accenture Interview

Management Consultant, Sammie Chan What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role? I’m a Management Consultant in Accenture’s Human Capital practice within the Communication, Media and Technology business area. May sound a bit lengthy! Basically I work on projects that focus on the people aspect of consulting such as change management, learning and development etc. My current project focuses on quality assurance and aims to solve process inefficiencies within client teams in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Can you tell us a little about Accenture’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart?

What drew me to Accenture was how collaborative everyone is and how inclusive the organisation is right from day one. A graduate role with Accenture is definitely a role that will throw people into the deep end with client exposure and stretch roles from the very beginning but the unique aspect is the safety net senior leadership provide in allowing you to grow and learn while still having support when needed.

How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university? Initially I wanted to work in Human Resources and so did a Bachelor of Business majoring in HR. However after joining lots of different societies in my first year of uni and balancing all the different priorities, I realised that consulting would suit me better in that it would give me the scope to work on a variety of projects and have roles that would challenge me. Consulting is more about having the right attitude and personality aspects such as strategic thinking and problem solving abilities as Accenture can teach you everything else you need to know for your roles.

What surprised you when you entered your role?

40

BUSINESS CAREERS GUIDE 2016 UNSWBSOC.COM

Easily the sheer scale of Accenture and the breadth of work we do! Every few months I get to the point where I think I know quite a few Accenture people and then I’ll attend an event and meet so many more! In terms of my roles I think I was surprised at how while you may have an idea of the kind of consulting work you want to do – be prepared to do anything! As consulting is driven by client demand it means you’ll be in a variety of roles in your career which might take you by surprise but in the long term it means you gain more knowledge and insight than if you had only done the same work over and over again.

Do you have any advice for someone applying for Accenture? Yes - do your research! Accenture’s scope is huge so research the kind of projects we work on and what area of the business you feel would make sense for you to work in. Make sure you attend networking events to meet our recruiters and get advice from Accenture representatives. During the interviews, focus on showing your strengths and what you can bring to the company be that relevant experience, a passion for problem solving etc.

Do you have any advice for someone interested in Consulting? Get involved in societies that have case study competitions and read up on the industry. Definitely attend career fairs and networking events when possible to ask questions about what is consulting like, what kind of work can you expect and questions like what will you actually be doing day to day?! Consulting can seem like such a mystery as every project and client is different so learn as much as you can. Plus it never hurts to be remembered by the recruiters and representatives!

CHALLENGE AND EXCITEMENT AT EVERY TURN. Drive innovation. Conquer process. Transform companies. Add vision. A role at Accenture allows you to achieve all this, and more. Work with leading experts. Boston Consulting Group Interview

Consultant, Hugh Griffiths

What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role?   No two days are alike at BCG and my role varies constantly. At BCG we work on solving really complex problems – my role changes to adapt to the specific issues at hand!   Can you tell us a little about BCG’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart?   BCG is incredibly collegiate. I’ve worked in a number of fields in my career and the culture at BCG is second-to-none. It seems fairly clichéd, but working with engaging colleagues who are interested in their work and passions outside of BCG, is incredibly rewarding.   How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university?   Prior to BCG, I was a corporate lawyer at a top-tier firm in Melbourne. I made the decision to make the change to consulting as I was seeking more commercially-oriented work and the opportunity to focus on the strategic matters facing a corporation.

What surprised you when you first came into your role?   The extent to which people are willing to take the time out of their day to help you learn. No matter who you call on for help, they will go above and beyond to ensure you are developing your skills to the greatest extent possible.   Do you have any advice for someone applying for BCG?   My advice is – just do it! You won’t look back.   Do you have any advice for someone interested in Consulting?   Consider what drives you to answer really big problems. If that is you, then feel free to look me up and reach out to hear more.

Investment Banking What is Investment Banking?

IBD is typically split into three areas:

Investment Banking is one of the most competitive fields in Commerce. Strong numerical skills, analytical, teamwork and communication skills are a must. A career in finance opens you up to a dynamic and fast-paced environment, global mobility, and the development of niche skills. However, if you decide to work in an investment bank you should be prepared for long hours and a pressure-intense environment as your team will be handling a lot of time sensitive deals. .

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A):

Investment Banking Division Also known as Corporate Finance in many banks, Investment banking is one of the most competitive areas in an already competitive industry. As an intern or a graduate, you can be assigned to an industry/sector team. Industry sectors include: Consumer, Financial Institutions, Healthcare, Industrials, Media & Telecommunication, Natural Resources, Real Estate, Gaming, and Technology.

The M&A division advises on the acquiring/ merging activities of both public and private firms. In general, the term ‘Acquiring’ is used when a larger company purchases a smaller company, while a ‘Merger’ takes place when both companies are of similar size. Equity Capital Markets (ECM): When a company wishes to raise additional capital to expand their business, they can turn to ECM analysts who teams write recommendations, organise and structure the offer process, market and raise awareness for an equity raising campaign, e.g. Initial Public Offerings. Debt Capital Markets: Similar to the ECM team, DCM market analysts provide advice and raise various types of debt for institutional clients and governments.

REAL ESTATE T

he real estate industry is a big business generating billions of dollars in revenue annually, and there are ample opportunities for entrepreneurs to turn a profit. Of course, the basics are still the same. The real estate industry’s pared-down definition is ‘land’. However, it’s much more complicated than that. The industry involves the buying, selling, renting, leasing, and management of commercial, residential, agricultural, and other kinds of property, including all the functions that support such activity, such as appraising and financing. The successful realtor is necessarily a shrewd salesperson with a deep knowledge of real estate markets and a broad understanding of the contracts, laws, and tax regulations that apply to real estate transactions. Thinking big is part and parcel of the real estate industry. Industry Background

Leasing Agents and Management Companies

Real Estate Brokerage

Real estate is a cyclical industry, reacting to macroeconomic trends such as interest rates, population growth, and economic strength. Despite what is happening with the greater economy and real estate prices in general, the real estate industry offers diverse opportunities for the entrepreneur, including some hedges against these trends when they’re moving in the wrong direction! The real estate industry consists of three primary fields: brokerages, leasing, and management.

Leasing agents work with property owners to handle the complexity involved with finding, vetting and signing tenants for their properties - and handling all the paperwork! Management companies operate buildings and other properties, making sure they are running properly, paying utilities, hiring staff and performing maintenance. Many management companies will also act as leasing agents for the property.

Real estate brokers bring together buyers and sellers of property, assist in price negotiations, and facilitate the work involved in deals from initial interest expressed through money being exchanged at closing. Examples of services provided include property appraisals and inspections.

CONSUMER GOODS AND RETAIL T

he Consumer Goods and Retail Industry is a large industry encompassing a diverse variety of career opportunities for individuals. It comprises of the sale of personal and household items to the public including food, furniture, appliances and electronics. Its an industry suited for people who enjoy working with people, have excellent organisational skills and have great analytical skills evaluating consumer trends and market research. Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies regularly sell large quantities of low-cost products to consumers. FMCG businesses are incredibly diverse but they tend to invest in marketing to establish brand awareness and establish loyalty with their customers. In particular, students majoring in marketing or management thus are sought after for leadership and management roles or to provide support services in the retail sector. Despite traditionally not the conventional financial services path for many business students, the FMCG sector encompasses huge companies like Woolworths and P&G, all of which unapologetically generate widespread value to its customers. Working as a graduate or vacationer within the FMCG sector will most likely see you having a product-centric role where you will be motivated to improve aspects of a product in areas such as sustainability, marketing and strategy.

Nestlé Interview

Brand Manager, Anna Maree Rallos What do you do? What are the duties, functions and responsibilities that you are involved in as a part of your role?   My role as a Brand Manager on the Sweet Creations team provides me with mouth-watering chocolate baking products and delicious marketing experiences. I’m responsible for managing a portfolio of household brands including Nestlé Sweetened Condensed Milk, Bakers’ Choice Chocolate and Plaistowe Cooking Chocolate. I get to sink my teeth into a variety of projects including the management of key innovation projects, creating engaging communication campaigns, strategizing for yearly brand plans, crafting concepts for research, creating branded content for our bakerscorner.com.au website, social media channels and other consumer communication pieces.              Can you tell us a little about Nestlé’s work culture and environment? What sets it apart? Nestlé is the world’s biggest food company which provides you with exposure to the best practice ideas and campaigns in the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) arena from all the different markets. Nestlé’s rich heritage in consumer goods comes to life where I walk around the office; from the Kit Kat team on Level 1 to Uncle Toby’s cereals on Level 2 to Maggi 2 Minute Noodles on the top floor. How did you get started in this field? How well did your work relate to the experiences or studies you had in university?   I completed a double degree in Business (Advertising) and Creative Industries (Media & Communication).  A degree is the cost of entry into many professional jobs and employers look for people who also have real world experience. I realised quite quickly the competiveness of graduate recruitment programs and sought to differentiate myself through an overseas university exchange, unpaid internships in a variety of industries

and volunteer work for not for profits. These work experience made me realise what I loved and equally what I loathed, ultimately shaping my decision to work for a big company.         What surprised you when you first came into your role? You are given responsibility from the very first day. In my sales rotation, I was allocated the largest territory by revenue in Melbourne and had the same KPI’s as the rest of the field team. During my five years at Nestlé I have been able to see the entire product cycle; from product ideation to packaging design to manufacturing to shelf to consumer. I’m surprised when I use information that I learned in elective subjects I never thought would be relevant, such as Colour Chemistry and Accounting, turns out to be invaluable when I’m managing projects.      Do you have any advice for someone applying for Nestle?   Nestlé encourage you to understand all aspects of the business, as breadth of experience is an important trait of future leaders. The graduate program is a great opportunity to test the waters across Sales, Marketing, Category and Channel. An open mindset towards your career and flexibility on your job location will be your best asset. I have been transferred to two different cities and also visited factories across Australian and New Zealand.

SPERO, Sales Graduate It’s rare to be handed an opportunity that gives you such a strong start to your career. In the Next Gen Nestlé graduate program, you’re exposed to many different functions, people and experiences in a short amount of time. In my first year, I relocated interstate and the opportunity to travel so early in my career means that I’m richer for the experience both career-wise and personally. I’ve had so much support throughout the program – from the different managers and teams I’ve been in, through to the training and development opportunities I’ve been given. It’s helped me take on challenging work and to learn best practices of the world’s biggest food and beverage company. At the end of the program, I now have a strong understanding of how Nestlé operates, the different roles it takes to get our products to our consumers, and the different career paths I could take in the future.
