Lawyers solicit £1500 for appeal Wimborne and Ringwood lawyers have donated nearly £1,500 for the Disaster Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Staff at Ellis Jones solicitors raised £720.50 to help refugees fleeing the fighting, which was matched by partners at the firm for a final total of £1,441. The proceeds will go toward providing food, water, shelter, medical aid and essential hygiene supplies for families and individuals in Ukraine and those who have crossed the border to neighbouring countries. Nigel Smith, managing partner at Ellis Jones, said: “Everyone at the firm has been incredibly moved by the plight of people in Ukraine. “Sadly, more horrific scenes are sure to unfold as the war continues so we are

pleased to be able to join in the international aid effort and play our part in helping to alleviate the suffering of those worst affected. “Many thanks to everyone who has supported our fundraising efforts, including our many staff and clients. “Their donations will help to save lives.” Funds were raised through various internal competitions and activities as well as

promotion on social media and collection pots at all of Ellis Jones’ six offices. According to the DEC, £30 provides essential hygiene supplies for three people for one month; £50 provides blankets for four families; and £100 provides emergency goods for two families for one month. The sunflower is Ukraine’s national flower and has become a symbol of hope.

4 New Stour & Avon, August 12, 2022 An autistic student with a passion for engineering was only four days into his work experience when the company offered him a job. Ethan Morphew, 20, a student with Futures in Christchurch, attended RHH Franks in New Milton for a week’s work placement. But the aerospace components company was so impressed with his skills they offered him a job by the Thursday. Ethan said: “My supervisor Colin told me that most people who go in for work experience make a metal money box or something like TALENT: Ethan with a bird feeder he created in wood and metal that. Have a quack at duck race The 22nd Annual Duck Race to be staged in aid of Wimborne in Bloom is all set to ‘float’ again this year. It will take place on the River Allen on Saturday, August 27, at 4pm. The ‘Ducks’ will be launched into the River at the bottom of Mill Lane, beside the Riverside Mews Café, by kind permission of the Slocock Trust and cross the finishing line beside the garden at the back of the Rising Sun in East Street. Ducks, at £1 each, will be sold in Crown Mead outside the Co-Op store on Saturday 20th, Thursday 25th, Friday 26th and again on Race Day itself Saturday August 27. The winner of the first duck home will receive £50, 2nd £25, 3rd £10 and 4th, 5th and 6th, £5 each. The proceeds will all be in aid of Wimborne in Bloom.

Futures Coach said: “I received an email asking me to go in and found myself in the board room with the operations manager, production supervisor and HR manager. “They told me that Ethan was very talented and they wanted to find a way they could offer him a job that wouldn’t interfere with his studies. “I always knew Ethan would thrive when given the opportunity and this was a very proud moment.” “RHH Franks says Ethan has a great future in engineering ahead of him and we are not surprised. “Ethan experiences some challenges in the social side of life and can become anxious in demanding situations. He’s also incredibly bright, creative and hard-working and excels when his needs are recognised. It’s great that this company has recognised that and will be helping to develop his talent.”

Hearing of helping the poor

The Christchurch Rotary Club has been learning how its generosity has helped improve life in an impoverished village in South India. David Todd and his wife Maureen, from the charity Reaching the Unreached (RTU), delivered an inspiring talk to Rotarians and showed a moving video about how life is improving in one small village in the state of Tamil Nadu. The club, working with the Primrose Trust, has helped to fund the building of a small basic house for villagers. Alongside the wider work of RTU to build a school, clinic, hostel, hospice and other small dwellings in the village, the lives of some of the most disadvantaged and poorest people in southern India are gradually being improved. RTU was set up in 1974

by the late James Kimpton who was a former teacher at St Peter’s School in Bournemouth. David Todd is a former headteacher of St Peter’s and travelled out to Tamil Nadu to see for himself how funding is making a difference. RTU aims to empower the most marginalised people in South India by providing

housing, food and water, healthcare, sanitation and other support. David’s video showed how funding is helping to change the lives of children, families and those suffering from serious illness. Kelvin Medley-Jones, a former pupil of St Peter’s School who, with his wife Pippa, founded the Primrose Trust, gave a vote of thanks.

The very model of a leading attraction Pictures: TOM SCRASE

Celebrations including a buffet dinner for volunteers, a visit by local MP Michael Tomlinson and the near completion of buildings for the charity attraction’s Model of the Model Town 70th anniversary project, culminated in a special cry by Wimborne’s Town Crier, Chris Brown. He marked the day which, 70 years before, had seen the start of visitors paying to view the then freshly constructed tourist destination. The new miniature Model of the Model Town in 1/100th scale has been placed behind the Corn Market in the WMT’s diorama recalling the position the attraction had in the real town in 1952. Project director and trustee Penri Jones has estimated that in excess of 1,500 volunteer man hours have gone into the Mini Model Town so far and that production and painting of the smaller scale structures is nearing completion. Recalling the commercial origins of the post-war tourist destination from August 1, 1952, and its continuing popularity 70 years later, marketing manager Greg Hoar said: “The original site was far from complete when it opened but rapidly become a very popular destination for visitors to the south coast area. “We continue to offer a good value fun destination for all the family, only made possible by decades of support and work by our loyal volunteer force”.

Business as usual at former train station

The Spetisbury Station Project Group has recently been dissolved. We simply did not have the required number of people willing or able to fill the vacant officers’ roles, so we were not able to continue operating as a group. Happily though, it is still very much business as usual up at this former Somerset & Dorset railway station that closed in 1956. The few remaining volunteers have come to an agreement with Spetisbury Parish Council to continue work under their supervision, something we are all very pleased about. After ten years’ hard work creating this pleasant landscaped setting on the North Dorset Trailway, and uncovering the station’s history, the last

thing we wanted was for our efforts to go to waste. However, there remains much work to do and additional help, particularly from the local community, is always appreciated. More details can be found at spetisburystationproject. co.uk. We would like to record a big thank-you to our former project manager Dean Cockwell, who since 2012 has done so much hard work, both on and off site, to get the project off the ground. Dean has sadly now had to stand down due to ill health but his efforts continue to be appreciated by the many visitors who enjoy this tranquil spot overlooking the Stour Valley. Nonsense to blame staff Well, it’s a long time since I read such nonsense as blaming NHS staff ‘underperforming’ for patients waiting to leave hospital causing bed blocking (Christopher Chope MP, New Stour & Avon, July 29).

The desperate lack of government funds for facilities in social care in the community is the reason that hospitals cannot discharge patients. Gillian Dawson Corfe Mullen

Especially with Melissa and the others because we look at the flowers and chat as we go.” The Aldbury raised a total of £160 for their efforts and companions and residents have already started thinking about their next challenge. Political round-up

Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the publisher

Government tackles BCP’s ‘dodgy deal’ It is always gratifying when the Government listens to MPs who raise policy concerns affecting their constituents. It is even better when the Government takes decisive action in response. It was, therefore, with delight that I welcomed the emergency ban brought in by the Government to prevent BCP Council pursuing its intended ‘dodgy deal’ to sell its portfolio of beach huts. The sale would not have been an open market one but a closed sale to a newlyformed, council-controlled company euphemistically described as a ‘Special Purpose Vehicle’. I had asked the Government back in June to prevent the sale and was told by the then Local Government Minister, Kemi Badenoch, that local authorities must act ‘within the intent and spirit’ of the freedoms given to them

Christchurch & East Dorset CHRIS CHOPE MP by the Government with a warning that further action would be considered. Kemi Badenoch, a rising star in the Conservative Party, as confirmed by her performance in the leadership campaign, clearly understood the issue. Sadly, BCP Council ignored her clear warning and is now having to face up to the

consequences of having a key policy blocked because it would neither have increased efficiency nor delivered future savings as required. The £400 payment to each and every household to help with the additional costs of fuel will be paid in six equal monthly instalments from October. That announcement, however, made no reference to those households living in residential park homes of which there are several thousand in Dorset and more than 100,000 nationwide. As Chairman of the AllParty Parliamentary Group for Park Homes, I have continued to raise this issue with the Government. The Energy Minister told me in May that although customers living in park homes where the supply is delivered through the site owner would not be eligible for the scheme, the

Government was exploring options for other ways in which such households might receive the support. Most recently I asked the Secretary of State for Business and Energy Strategy, Kwarsi Kwarteng, whether he can guarantee that each of these households will receive the energy bill rebate. He said, ‘We have had the consultation and we will come up with a response that ensures that Christchurch constituents get a fair deal on this issue’. As the response fell short of the guarantee for which I was asking, I have now written back to the Secretary of State seeking further clarity and assurance. If second home owners are going to be able to receive £400 in respect of each of their homes, it would be grossly unjust if park home residents were to miss out. Watch this space!

Inflation prediction is truly terrifying A winter of discontent approaches. The Bank of England’s forecast of 13% inflation is truly terrifying. The average energy bill will reach £3,600 in October, before exceeding £4,000 in the new year. I must advise against these ‘don’t pay’ your utility bill campaigns. This is not the poll tax. Not paying will drag down your credit rating, have the bailiffs at your door and worst of all see you disconnected mid-winter. What readers might want to know though is that you will still benefit from the protection of the energy price cap if you cancel your direct debit and chose to pay in arrears instead. Do this with caution though as budgeting will be harder – particularly if you don’t have a smart meter. Heating oil prices also remain stubbornly high, despite crude oil prices declining. And what of government

action on the energy crisis? Next month, we will have a new prime minister – most probably Liz Truss. The fourth Tory leader in six years. Having presented herself to the Tory membership as the continuityJohnson candidate, she’ll attempt the deranged pivot of blaming some alien, previous administration - of which she was part - for the structure of the energy market. The one-upmanship of the candidates’ tax relief measures has distracted from some of the toxic elements of the contest. Remember Penny Mordaunt? Once the front runner, until Truss’s semi-hysterical Mail allies launched day after day of bilious personal attacks on her, for – heaven forbid – having expressed an open mind on gender self-identification. Once eliminated, poor Penny then publicly demeaned herself by backing Truss in an attempt no doubt to ensure herself

Dorset Labour GREG WILLIAMS of a cabinet job. And what of East Dorset’s Christopher Chope? In these very pages, he rails against ‘underperformance’ of civil servants, blaming the ‘current chaos’ of bed blocking on them. He’s right to highlight the problem, but wrong to pile the blame on NHS staff. His party has had 12 years in government to bring forward a

plan for integrated health and social care, which would reduce discharge delays. They have failed. The next Tory leader also looks set to scrap the ‘health and social care levy’ which was supposed to provide the funds necessary to help resolve the social care crisis. The natural party of government? More a party that has awkwardly gone on too long. As an alternative, Labour may still have its challenges. Its difficulty in supporting workers who need a pay rise whilst simultaneously being critical of the breakdowns in negotiations that lead to strikes remains. But at least Labour looks increasingly like a government in waiting under Starmer’s leadership. As the conference season approaches, I look forward to seeing the policies that members across the country have been working on make their way to the fore.

Roman discovery is a villa of society

by Faith Eckersall It’s 80 years since the first official dig commenced at the Roman villa near Fordingbridge. The story of this remarkable find began when Hampshire farmer Tom Porter began digging enthusiastically in a rabbit warren on West Park Farm, at Rockbourne, near Fordingbridge. He was trying to free a ferret but, as he did so, he unearthed something much more interesting – a large quantity of oyster shells and small mosaic tiles. Farmer Porter informed a local estate agent and chartered surveyor, Albert Tennyson Morley Hewitt. A keen historian and antiquarian, Morley Hewitt immediately recognised the potential importance of the finds and quickly purchased the land. The date was summer 1942 and Britain was in the middle of a World War against Germany. But that didn’t stop Morley Hewitt, who managed to gain permission for a trial dig and discovered an exquisite mosaic floor, featuring an eight-pointed star. It’s easy to imagine his excitement at finding an undiscovered fragment of England’s Roman past. Further digs were organised, exposing a bath-house which proved, beyond doubt, that something very special had been existed once at Rockbourne. Over the next 30 years, the indefatigable Morley Hewitt organised a series of digs and, helped by volunteers and archaeologists, revealed more and more of Rockbourne Roman Villa. According to Hampshire Cultural Trust: ‘In the 1960s it attracted so many visitors that the small country

roads were blocked by traffic. ‘Thousands of people watched the layout of the villa slowly revealed in front of them and more objects coming out of the ground.’ To house these objects, the magnificent Morley Hewitt stepped in again, funding a private museum on the site. That museum has since passed to the custodianship of Hampshire County Council and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Among the items that can be seen include 493 coins, which were part of a hoard discovered on the site, and an adult skeleton, who was found buried face down. There are also numerous pots, pottery shards and other items patiently recovered by many volunteer archaeologists, including two rare milestones. But who lived at Rockbourne? The farming tools and animal bones discovered indicate it was primarily an agricultural place, but it’s also thought it could have been a country home for

Publius Helvuis Pertinax, governor of Britain in AD 185-6, and his family. Rockbourne’s visitor services assistant, Wade Jones, says: “Rockbourne isn’t like Fishbourne near Chichester. It’s in an out-of-the-way place and was not very wealthy or grand, it shows how more ordinary people lived in those times.” However, he believes this is all part of its charm. “It started out as a small cottage in about AD50 but got changed so many times over 400 years,” he says. “They built a new wing, then they built the bath-house and hypocaust, which is the only one discovered with curved roof tiles as part of its design.” Wade adores Rockbourne, which he describes as a unique place. During the Pandemic, when it was closed, he worked in retail but he was delighted to return back into history and has been catching up on lost time. During the summer he manages visits and all matters related to the site. During the winter, he does more

research as well as handling the villa’s social media. “I have a huge passion for this place and there are so many reasons that make Rockbourne special,” he says. “Partly it’s because it was a more ordinary Roman residence compared to others you can see. But it’s also because the site is so peaceful – if you pay to come in, you’re entitled to revisit throughout the year and we get a lot of local people who come here just to spend a peaceful hour or so in the countryside.” Another reason to celebrate Rockboune, he says, is because its finds remain on site – rather than being carted off to the British Museum. “I found a letter in the archives which

showed that the British Museum had asked to have some of the pieces that had been discovered, but Morley Hewitt said no, they had to stay here.” He is also amused by the account of archaeological writer and illustrator, Stephen R Cosh, who had the onerous task of accurately painting one of Rockbourne’s badly-repaired mosaics. “The mosaic is preserved underground but it appeared to have undergone a repair that just went absolutely wrong, a bit of a Roman bodge job,” he says. “Stephen R Cosh described it as the worst he’d ever had to paint! “It’s little things like that which make the place come alive.” Visit: hampshireculture.org.uk/ rockbourne-roman-villa.

You can also buy tickets on the gate with adult tickets £18, children £4 and under 5’s free. A family ticket on the day is £42. Show Organiser James Cox says: “Our aim is to keep the entrance price very reasonable and we’re delighted we’ve been able to do this again for 2022 - a full day out for a family for under £45! There’s also free parking, plenty of places to picnic and dogs on leads are welcome too. This year there’s even more to see at this annual show. Announcing a new star attraction, the show welcomes the world famous motorcycle spectacular - The IMPs Motorcycle Display Team sponsored by Fuel10K. With the youngest performer only five years old, these daredevil stunt riders put on a dynamic display of motorcycle skills including a death-defying fire jump you won’t want to miss! From two wheels to four legs, agriculture is at the heart of The Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show and for the first time in over 15 years, the much loved Grand Parade of Livestock, sponsored by Woolley & Wallis, will be featured in the Gritchie Brewing Company Main Ring. The champion cattle and sheep of the 2022 Show will parade in the expanse of the Ring and there’s a chance to see rare breeds close up. Horse fans will love the equestrian exhibits this year - the show welcomes back the Heavy Horse Village, even bigger than before. Sponsored by Wincanton Racecourse, there will be heavy horse competitions and demonstrations by these gentle giants of the equestrian world. There’s also Shetland pony racing, showjumping and driving.

Dog-lovers will adore the hilarious antics of Terrier Racing plus there’s dog shows, agility classes and demonstrations. The Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show is also buzzing to announce a brand new Bees & Honey Marquee for the first time. These insects, essential to our life on earth, are being celebrated at the Show, which has teamed up with the North Dorset Beekeepers Association to bring a marquee filled with exciting demonstrators, hands-on activities and a bee hive. For the first time in three years, the bunnies are back! Beatrix Potter’s most celebrated creatures are hopping over to the show where you can see fabulous floppy-eared to beautiful big-eared rabbits - favourite pets that have been domesticated for over 2000 years. Photography, painting and cake-baking are just some of the rural hobbies celebrated with stunning exhibitions and competitions. Garden fans should not miss the huge horticultural marquee dedicated to flower displays and prize-winning vegetables. As well as so much to see, there’s a great selection of local food and drink producers selling their wares, retail therapy courtesy of a countryside shopping village, live music and funfair. As part of local plans to give families a summer of fun, Wimborne BID has teamed up with High Street Safari to run a free story-trail in Wimborne until Sunday, September 4. This innovative experience lets family choose what happens in the story and enables anyone with a smartphone to take part. Players will not only discover cute characters along the route, but they also get to see them burst to life in augmented reality and

Tell your own tale on town’s new safari trail

take selfies and record videos with them. The idea behind the event is to encourage families to come into Wimborne with a free, exciting event that

gets kids out of the house. Shopping parents will love being able to get the kids on board and families looking for a relaxing day out can encourage kids to have a screen-time break, do some walking and get rewarded at the end. The Mystery of the Secret Keys is located at 10 stops around Wimborne to visit, positioned so that families can discover hidden parts of the town. Families will be guided on their trip by The Luminauts, an interstellar team of superheroes, on an adventure as they find special keys that release 10 gemeating beasties in AR.

The trail takes about 45 minutes to complete

but can be completed in more than one visit. It’s completely free for families and groups to take part in and they win a free, digital fun pack at the end. The trail works without the need for families to download or sign up to anything, and works on any smart device. While it has been designed so that there is no need to go inside the venues, some participating businesses are offering discounts and vouchers to come in while you visit. To find out more about the trail, visit the website: highstreetsafari.com

Antiques & Collectibles The group of medals awarded to Sir Albert Thomas ‘Archie’ Lamb KBE CMG DFC are included in the Charterhouse September auction of medals, militaria, coins and stamps. “They are a fantastic group of medals charting the deeds and travels of Sir Archie from the Second World War through to the late 1970s when he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 1979,” said Richard Bromell of Charterhouse. “With the market for medals, militaria, coins and stamps remaining strong we have already received quite a lot of pre-sale interest in this group.” Arthur Thomas Lamb was born in 1921. He joined the Foreign Office in 1938 and at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 he volunteered for the Royal Air Force. Called up in 1941 he carried

We’re incredibly proud of our people As we reach the end of this academic year, I want to celebrate the hard work and success of all the students at Corfe Hills School. It has been a busy and eventful year and, although the Pandemic has continued to impact school life, we are delighted that we have been able to restart so many of the events and activities that had been put on hold over the last two years. The academic year began with a very positive Ofsted inspection with the school graded good in all categories. November saw the return of our annual school production with three exceptional sell-out performances of Matilda Jr. The spring term saw Year 10 work experience and success in the student led Dance Live competition with our team winning the Best Concept Award in the final at the Lighthouse Theatre. Our students have also achieved incredible sporting success this year with our U16 girls football team

winning the County Cup Final and our Year 10 team winning the Town Sports Competition. The last half term has seen the return of our flagship fundraising event, the Sandwalk, after a three-year gap, and alongside these highlights there

have been many other extra-curricular activities and residential trips that have taken place. I am incredibly grateful to our staff team and the local community as it is their support that makes it possible to offer so much for our students. This year has also seen the return of GCSE and A-level examinations after two years without public examinations. Supported by their teachers, our students have worked incredibly hard this year and have shown commitment and enthusiasm in their studies whether that has been choosing and beginning GCSEs or the transition to A-level courses. We are incredibly proud of the determination and resilience shown by our Year 11 and Year 13 students during their examination season, and we look forward to celebrating with them later in August when they receive their results. Students’ flying visit to Aircraft Rd sixth form site Autism Unlimited’ Sixth Form has outgrown its current base and the charity has taken on a large part of a building in Airfield Road, Christchurch. Based in Parley, the leading regional charity - which provides specialist education, care and support to autistic children and adults - runs Portfield School which supports primary and secondary school students aged 4-15. But now major refurbishment is now under way to install classrooms, workshop areas, a kitchen and dining area and outdoor space in time for the first Sixth Form class to move in at the start of the autumn term. Siún Cranny, CEO of Autism Unlimited, said: “This was the student’s first visit to the new Sixth Form site and despite it being a work in progress, they were all very impressed and are very much looking forward to moving in and making it their own unique space.” Students attend Sixth Form between the ages of 15 and 19 and the focus starts to look beyond school life and onwards to accreditations and preparation for life post-education. Siún continued: “Exploring the world of work and career and achieving fulfilment in adulthood are integral to Sixth Form, as well as wellbeing – healthy lives and healthy networks and relationships. “Every student is encouraged to undertake work experience and also benefits from expert career advice and support from the skilled Sixth Form team. “Sixth Form is also a time for exploring

personal independence and at this stage, students develop their understanding of meal preparation, cleaning and handling money in different situations outside of the classroom. “The new building will provide a fantastic environment which is meaningful and welcoming for students at this crucial time in life when it is so important to recognise they are maturing and need a base which inspires and engages them.” Classes will move into the new building in phases up until the end of the year.

The new location also offers the opportunity to establish links with the local business park and the wider area for possible work experience. Student Robbie Piper, 17, said: “I think it’s going to be ten out of ten when it’s finished. “There will be lots more room for us and a proper kitchen, good outside space and even a gym. “I want to learn to drive, become an engineer and have my own house when I am older, so studying here is going to help me a lot.”

An adventurous day out for children Send children and families from Diverse Abilities’ Coping with CHAOS enjoyed a day out at Adventure Wonderland, thanks to tickets donated by the Dorset theme park. More than 70 tickets have been donated to Children’s Services at Dorset’s disability charity to allow the families to have a great day out at the beginning of the summer holidays. Amy Topp, short breaks coordinator at Diverse Abilities, said: “We are so thankful to the team at Adventure Wonderland for their incredibly kind donation of tickets, our Coping with CHAOS families love taking days out and having our staff in tow means they can really enjoy themselves.”

Cooking...

Strawberry Cheesecake As I think I have mentioned before, we started another diet so we could look skinny on holiday! (Some chance!) The trouble is, Martin has no will power when it comes to desserts and he leads me off the straight and narrow! He suggested that I make a cheesecake, purely for my column as he thinks I have written too much about dinners! (I think that was just a ruse so that he can have a dessert!) So, I looked through my recipe book and found the easiest one to do. I like this recipe as you don’t have to bake it and it is reasonably cheap to make. I used strawberries in this, but you could use other fruit... whatever takes your fancy really. It’s ideal to use with wonky fruit as it doesn’t make any different if the fruit is not perfect. The cream cheese and cream make it very creamy, well it would wouldn’t it? But they also hold it together. You could add chocolate as well, just to make it a bit more indulgent. I guess I should have made it for the Queen’s Jubilee, but we were a Jubileefree household. Well, we did watch

union jack hat for their street party. She was a confirmed royalist as is my dad. So, I hope you enjoy this summer dessert as much as Martin did! Ingredients: 250 grm digestive biscuits crushed 100grm butter melted Tsp vanilla essence 600grms soft cream cheese 100grms icing sugar 300ml double cream 400 grms strawberries chopped the concert, which we thought was epic. I did feel a bit sorry for the royal youngsters as they probably have no idea who the group Queen are or Rod Stewart for that matter! And I loved the drone corgis! Martin was glad when it was all over. My dad, who is 97 bless him, when I asked if he wanted to go to the service in the Minster, said that he would give it a miss, and go to the next one! I admire his optimism! It was nice to see all the street parties and the celebrations. I remember the silver jubilee and my gran making a

Method: Melt the butter add the crushed digestive biscuits mixing together Put the mixture in an 8” diameter baking tin, leave to chill in the fridge Put the cream cheese, icing sugar (sifted) and vanilla essence into a bowl and beat with an electric mixer until smooth Add the cream and continue beating until the mixture thickens Fold in the chopped strawberries and spoon over the base. Chill in the fridge until it’s needed or until you have eaten it all!

Take a picnic, not a barbecue If the school holidays mean you will be visiting one of Dorset & Wiltshire’s local heathlands or outdoors spaces to enjoy the wildlife and wilderness, please take a picnic. So says Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) which is encouraging residents and visitors to take a picnic and not a barbecue. The service says: ‘Warmer and breezy weather increases the risk of accidental or deliberate fires in our open spaces. A wildfire can move at speeds faster than an Olympic sprinter, so we are asking people who are out and about to follow some simple steps. ‘If you are enjoying our open spaces when a fire occurs, get to a safe place and call 999 with as much information as possible. Consider downloading and using What3Words to identify your exact location. ‘You can also help by reporting any antisocial behaviour on the heath to the Police on 101. ‘During 2021, DWFRS dealt with 494 fires in the open. In 2022, we have already seen large wildfires in Dorset & Wiltshire and

firefighters across the UK have dealt with more wildfires between January and May than in the whole of 2021 (243 compared to 237 in 2021).’ Area manager Marc House, head of prevention at DWFRS said: “There is a trend that the number of deliberately set fires and fires caused by barbecues and

bonfires in these open spaces, increases. He added: “If you are a smoker, never ever just throw them away lit – the result could be 50 or 100 firefighters tackling the subsequent blaze.” Anyone caught starting a fire on a heath will be prosecuted whether it is a case of deliberate arson or neglect.

Health & Wellbeing When it comes to nutrition and weight management, there are plenty of people wanting a quick fix and plenty of others willing to sell us one. This can lead to a lot of confusion and even fear around food. It’s easy to get our attention with headlines like ‘X food linked to cancer!’ or ‘Avoid these five foods if you want to lose weight’ (why is it always five foods?). Look at the internet, pick up a magazine or browse a book store and there are gurus telling us what and how we should eat and that we’ve been doing it wrong. Remember, these are for entertainment purposes. If you take a birds-eye view, many of these are offering conflicting, contradictory advice. They can’t all be right! Popular diets have always been around and long enough that they’re recycled and rebranded for new generations in different formats. They like to give us a set of, often arbitrary, rules to follow and you are either ‘on’ or

No need to fear food ‘off’ the diet. There is also a lot of scaremongering about food as playing into our insecurities makes it easier to sell us temporary solutions. The starting point for improving our diet is to look at what we currently eat, as we eat it for good reasons; we probably enjoy it and it’s available to us. Start to make small changes and tweak this if you’re serious about life long behaviour change. Try and do the simple things well and consistently without looking to complicate your life. This will help build a good relationship with food and your body at the same time. Eating disorders are on the rise and trying to follow unnecessary and rigid dietary rules can contribute to this. If someone offers you a nutrition hack, particularly if it’s around championing specific foods or demonising others, be wary. The biggest issue in nutrition

isn’t a lack of knowledge, we know more than enough to make sound recommendations that will vastly improve most of our health. It’s making it actionable that is the challenge. However, food is political; availability, price (and therefore choice) is going to become more and more of a problem. If we can afford a fridge and a cooker in our home and to keep food in stock for ourselves and our family, we’re better off than many in our community. At an individual level, I help people come up with ways they can fit a behaviour change into their lifestyle. I think one of the most valuable behaviours I can role model is having a relaxed, balanced attitude around food. What do I say when someone asks me what they should eat? It will be along the lines of ‘eat as wide a variety of food as you can - if you’re able to do this, please, please enjoy it’.

One thing I love about being a hypnotherapist is that I can work from pretty much anywhere, so I am never tied to one particular workplace. During the Covid lockdown I was lucky that I could continue helping people by working online with them. The demand at that point was really high - a lot of people were experiencing raised levels of anxiety, loneliness and low mood. So I took the chance to upskill myself with some training in how to work safely with therapy clients in the online world. Turns out, it’s really not so very different to being faceto-face with someone, and in some ways, is actually better. My client gets to remain in the familiar surroundings of their own home and can relax immediately once the session is over. I continue to work online with many people each week - for anyone with mobility issues, social anxiety or a

By Susie Carver, consulting hypnotherapist with Sea Change Hypnotherapy in Wimborne seachangehypno.com lack of transport it provides a lifeline of support that they might otherwise not be able to access. It also means I can work with someone regardless of where they live in the world... many of my clients are now from overseas. But online isn’t for everyone,

so I really enjoy having my own local therapy space near to Wimborne’s Walford Mill. My room there is comfortable and private, and as a therapist, I have the bonus of being surrounded by a team of like-minded fellow practitioners and teachers who provide a one-stop shop for all your emotional, physical and spiritual health needs. Having this community at the studio is great for my clients, who have the opportunity to discover new ways of enhancing their lives and meeting new friends. The real beauty of hypnotherapy is the fact that I don’t always need absolute silence or a dedicated therapy room to make a difference to people. Sometimes I can do therapy ‘on the fly’ - all it takes is for the person to be willing to give it a go and it’s

often possible to help them overcome problems right then and there, in a matter of minutes. I’ve helped people out of pain, removed fears and provided assistance with many other issues simply by being willing to jump in with some ‘on the spot’ hypnosis. For most people though, therapy is a private matter, and my preference is always to create a safe and comfortable space where a person can learn how to tap into all their unconscious strengths. I aim to work in a way that suits each particular client, and I enjoy the variety. Wherever the work takes place, there’s nothing quite like watching someone blossom as they discover more and more about how the power of their mind can help them overcome their problems.

HINTON Hinton Martell and Hinton Parva have been combined into one parish, Hinton, so this walk is a little longer than usual, approaching nine miles. But most of it is easy going on Tarmac and (apart from the Chalbury visit) not too steep. Park near the church at Hinton Martell, which is worth visiting as it has some lovely decorations, including statues. Then follow the road north east, soon veering eastward through Uppington where there’s a left turn taking you uphill to Chalbury. It’s over the parish boundary but worth a visit. The church has rare box pews. Now head east-south-eastwards along road and footpath to Chalbury Common and then turn right and head south

down the road, which follows the parish boundary with Holt, passing through Gaunt’s Common. After a mile or so

you’ll find a road to your right which weaves its way north-westward for a mile past Woodcutts Farm to a cross

road at High Lea Farm. Turn left and head south for a mile, passing through Hinton Parva. The few scattered dwellings explain why it got its name: parva is Latin for small. On your left you’ll see a smooth (not rough) road which takes you in a loop through Stanbridge and back to the road. About a furlong down the road is the church and also, on your right, a footpath (sometimes soggy) that takes you down to the River Allen, a tributary of the Stour. Having explored, and looked at the old buildings, make your way back to the road and retrace your steps back up to High Lea Farm, after passing which turn right and head eastwards back to Hinton Martell where, after passing a fountain you’ll soon find yourself back at your car.

Don’t let your body get in your way When you try a new experience, it can be daunting not knowing what to expect. I’m often asked what to expect when coming for a massage. It’s important to remember that not all therapists work the same so ask questions to help put your mind at ease. I’m usually asked what to expect, what to wear, will I be covered up, am I too big for a massage, too hairy, what about my scars? You don’t need to worry about any of those things. During your consultation, I’ll give you an overview of the areas I’ll need to work on and check that you’re okay with that. If you have any concerns or areas you prefer not to be touched, then we can work around this. I’ll always leave the room while you undress and re-dress, I will explain what you need to take off, where and how you need to lay and which sheet to be under. If you’re not sure on something, please just ask – I want you to feel comfortable and safe. Depending on what area of the body you’re having treated, your pants/ boxers will stay on. If we’re doing glute work (that’s your buttocks) I’ll always check before touching that area. A lot of glute massage can be carried out over the top of the sheet so I won’t necessarily be touching your bare bottom. This is also why I don’t advise wearing your best undies as they may come

into contact with massage wax or oil. Your bra will usually come off for treatment but you’ll remain covered throughout. If you’re concerned about being bra-less I’m always happy to place an additional modesty towel for comfort. Throughout the treatment I will always be checking in with you to see how you feel and how it may feel where I’m working. It’s important that you’re happy and give consent for me working on and touching your body. If you need to pause or you need a sip of water, that’s okay too. As for being hairy or worrying about shaving - forget it! I’ve also been a beauty therapist, so I’ve seen it all! Perhaps don’t come straight from the hairdressers - I’m

more than likely to mess up your hairdo or get a little oil in there. If you have scars, we can work on releasing some of that scar tissue and tension if you wish or leave them well alone if you prefer. Scar work can be amazing but can also bring a lot of emotion with it too, so it’s something you need to be ready for. There’s no need to worry about wobbly bits, being too old, big or skinny for massage. People come in all shapes and sizes. What matters is that you’re comfortable. When you come for a massage you’re there for a reason, whether that’s for pain management or just to relax. That’s what I’m there to focus on. If there’s anything I can do to reassure you or make you feel more comfortable, then I will. So what’s stopping you from booking a massage? Relax & Remedy – helping you manage pain, look good and feel better.

He puts smiles on everyone’s faces, from the staff, to the patients, to the other volunteers. Well done Robin and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you’ve done for the organisation.” Robin concluded: “Volunteering is such a special experience. Dealing with ‘wilted flowers’

I have strong childhood memories of being surrounded by an abundance of glorious plants, flowers and vegetables because, as a child, my family home was right in the centre of a garden nursery that my parents owned. I think that perhaps my love of all things nature comes from these happy times, from making potions and lotions, from crumbling the stamens of the white Calla Lilies, to the smell on my fingers from side-shooting the tomato plants in the long hot greenhouses, to walking amidst the rows and rows of bobbing flower heads of dahlias, gladioli, statis and stocks. To this day, I love flowers, I love tending them and I love them in the house. I love

their cheery little faces, the endless array of colours, the exquisite detail of each little petal, so dainty and perfectly formed. They bring me such simple joy and pleasure. Imagine now, a beautiful vase of your favourite flowers, the gorgeous heady scent, the delicate petals, often in such awe-inspiring shapes. They catch your eye; they may make you smile. A few days later you notice that a couple of the flowers have wilted, dropped their little heads, so you take that vase, remove the dead flowers, retrim the ends, rearrange the display and return the vase to its place, and continue to enjoy them. So, why do we think nothing of removing dead flowers from a vase, and yet we hold on to things in life that are no

longer serving us? Perhaps its clothes and shoes that we don’t like or don’t fit anymore, a friendship that drains us and has passed its best, a relationship that has become washed up, a career that leaves us empty and demotivated? Why do we not remove the stagnant, the dead, the rotten elements of life, rather than allowing them to cling to us, fester and clog up our lives? Life is so very short and precious, and yet we often spend so much time giving out to others, carrying out meaningless jobs, doing things that we don’t want to do, keeping things that we don’t like, when we could live a better, freer, more simplistic life, by merely keeping on top of our ‘wilting flowers!’

n Victoria Arnold is a life coach from Wimborne Victoriaarnold.co.uk In the garden, to keep a plant flourishing, we prune, we deadhead, we remove dead leaves, so that the plant puts its energies into producing more buds. To keep flowers in a vase flowering longer, we trim their stems and give them fresh water. Nature is cyclical, things birth, grow, evolve and die. Relationships, friendships, careers are cyclical. Life is cyclical. Perhaps we should take a tip from nature and spend time ‘deadheading’ our lives!

SOCCER STAR: Stan Holland shares a joke with AFCB’s Steve Cuss and Neil Vacher and, below, with Paul Keeping

Centenerian soccer star Stan’s the man

A football-loving resident from Wickmeads care home in Tuckton near Christchurch enjoyed a very special 100th birthday celebration with a VIP visit to AFC Bournemouth. Former professional footballer Stan Holland was treated to a guided tour at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium with assistant club secretary and club historian, Neil Vacher. Stan played professional football in the 1940s and 1950s for clubs including Brockenhurst FC and Sway FC and both clubs sent their best wishes and gifts to mark his special day, including a picture of Stan and his Sway FC teammates winning the cup in 1947/48. Staff and residents at Wickmeads joined in the celebrations, throwing a garden party for Stan at the home which was attended by many of his friends and family. Performer Steve Shappelle kept everyone entertained with jokes and songs, including some of Stan’s favourites. Particularly

poignant was his rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll meet again’ with which Stan happily joined in. During the Second World War, Stan was lucky enough to meet Dame Vera Lynn whilst serving out in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and exchanged communication with her and her family in later years. Wickmeads’ activities coordinator, Hudson, who helped arrange the celebrations for Stan, was pleased to present him with a mounted display featuring their letters, as well as a newspaper clipping of Dame Vera’s visit to the troops and photos of her, which really brought a tear to his eye. Stan was also thrilled to receive a birthday card from the Queen. Tracey Walker, home manager, said: “Turning 100 is a real milestone birthday so we were delighted to help Stan celebrate his big day, firstly with the garden party and then a trip to the Vitality Stadium. “He certainly lives life to the full.”

‘Let’s get the jab done’ says NHS Dorset Healthcare says that, with Covid-19 still spreading in our communities there are lots of opportunities to grab whichever jab you need at Dorset’s network of vaccination centres and hubs. As well as the King’s Park centre in Bournemouth there are community pharmacies and primary care networks across the county offering vaccinations for anyone who is eligible, whether it’s a first or second dose or a booster. You can find out which doses you’re eligible for and when and where you can have them on Dorset HealthCare’s vaccination service web page: dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/covid19-vaccination-service. That includes anyone who is eligible for the spring 2022 booster dose. You can book via the National Booking System or by calling 119 and there are also walk-ins available at some locations. Some sites are bookable through a local booking service, and you may be contacted directly by them if there is one near to you. Dorset vaccination programme

clinical lead Dr Ravin Ramtohal said: “It may be tempting to let down our guard as we go into the summer, but Covid-19 is still around and still impacting our lives. “We all want to enjoy the warmer weather and hopefully get a break in the summer - making sure you have your full course of vaccinations will help you to avoid a nasty bout of the virus so you can do all things you want to do.” Plans are being developed to roll out the autumn booster programme, with eligible groups announced by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

More information on the arrangements for Dorset will be available soon. There are special arrangements to visit residents of care homes for older adults and those who are housebound and eligible for the vaccination please be patient while heath care workers book everyone in. Anyone who is severely immunosuppressed and has not had all their vaccinations should have them as soon as possible - you will receive confirmation of your eligibility for the vaccination from either your GP, your specialist doctor or NHS England.

CAN you help us with the Covid cause? Community Action Network (CAN) is on the lookout for volunteers to help the autumn Covid-19 vaccination programme at Kings Park Hospital in Boscombe. While Kings Park Hospital is now the main site for the vaccination programme, CAN has been providing volunteers to work alongside the NHS since the doors first opened at the original mass vaccination site at the Bournemouth International Centre in January 2021. To help protect communities and save lives, CAN is launching a recruitment campaign to

find volunteer marshals. They’ll help people attending Covid-19 appointments, ensuring that the busy vaccination centre runs like clockwork. Louise Ford, senior volunteer coordinator lead, said: “We want people coming for vaccinations to feel welcomed, comfortable and safe. “Our volunteer marshals play an important role in guiding visitors through their vaccination journey.” Amy Collins, volunteer development lead, added: “Volunteer marshals help in so many ways, from providing a friendly

welcome to escorting people to vaccination points and bidding farewell at the exit.” Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided, as well as refreshments and travel expenses, whether volunteers arrive by bus, train, car or Beryl Bike! Various shifts will be available throughout the week, including evenings and weekends. On each shift, volunteers will receive a full briefing, with staff on hand for support, as well as regular breaks. Anyone over the age of 16 can register their interest

via CAN’s website at can100.org with more information available on the site’s Volunteering Hub page. The autumn Covid-19 vaccination programme is expected to get under way in early September. Health & Wellbeing RISK: The upper Beaulieu River at Ipley Picture: IAN WEST

‘New Forest used as open sewer’ claim by Faith Eckersall An environmental charity has accused Southern Water of treating the New Forest as ‘an open sewer’. Freedom of Information requests by the charity River Action, whose team includes the Undertones’ frontman and water campaigner, Feargal Sharkey, revealed evidence of more than 250 incidences of sewage discharge. In an open letter to Southern Water, River Action accused the company of discharging raw sewage into: “The two principal river catchments of the New Forest, the Lymington and Beaulieu Rivers, on more than 250 occasions and a total period of just under 1,900 hours.” It said that according to Environment Agency data: “Reported discharges by Southern Water sewage treatment plants have now occurred, into these two rivers, on no less than 900 occasions over the last three reported years.” The charity said the most frequent discharges over this period occurred at Brockenhurst Wastewater Treatment Works on the Lymington River, and Lyndhurst Wastewater Treatment Works on the Beaulieu River, accounting for well over 50 per cent of total discharges. It is particularly concerned about discharges into the Beaulieu River at Lyndhurst - 551 hours of discharge in 2021 - given, it says, that the discharge pipe is located close to the river’s source. “In addition, following stream restoration work, high flow conditions see discharged pollutants spilling onto

adjacent grazing lawns a short distance downstream – these lawns are popular locations for grazing livestock and recreational users to congregate, raising concerns about health risks,” said River Action. The charity’s founder and chairman, Charles Watson, said: “As tens of thousands of visitors enjoy the wonders of the New Forest, it just seems inconceivable that Europe’s favourite National Park is being treated like an open sewer by Southern Water.” He urged the company to disclose immediately, what measure it plans to take to ‘end this abuse of the country’s favourite national park.’ The news comes just over a year after Southern Water was slapped with a record £90million fine, after pleading

guilty to thousands of discharges of sewage, which polluted rivers and coastal waters in Kent, Hampshire and Sussex. The court case, which was the largest criminal investigation in the Environment Agency’s 25-year history, saw the presiding judge, the Honourable Mr Justice Johnson, criticise the company’s ‘shocking and wholesale disregard for the environment, for the precious and delicate ecosystems along the North Kent and Solent coastlines, for human health and for the fishers and other legitimate businesses that depend on the vitality of the coastal waters.’ Southern Water confirmed it had received River Action’s letter. In a statement attributed to Dr Nick Mills, head of the Storm Overflow Task Force, the company said its CEO, Lawrence Gosden, would be ‘delighted to meet this important new charity’. “We are one of the key stewards of river water quality and are investing record amounts to protect and enhance the environment,” it said. “In particular our Storm Overflow Task Force is leading the industry in our pioneering approach to reducing releases during heavy rain. “Nature based solutions and working with partners including NGOs, land owners, councils and businesses is the key to reducing the amount of water getting into our system and slowing the flow so our systems can cope.” An update on the Storm Overflow Task Force can be found at: southernwater. co.uk/media/7197/5969_storm_ overflow_taskforce_update_v2.pdf

Golden times for flower group

In July the West Moors Flower Group celebrated its Golden Anniversary, writes Catherine Jenkins. It all started when a group of friends met up at Brenda Dear’s house in Pinehurst Road to share our love of flowers As numbers grew we moved to the village hall where we all meet every month to watch a local demonstrator. We celebrated with the members and visitors from the Dorset and Guernsey area who

enjoyed a cream tea and we were entertained by the West Moors Singers who sang songs from the shows. Thereb was also a competition of a decorated tea cup and the table looked amazing. It was won by Jenny Stubbs, and all had a wonderful afternoon.

No job too big or too small : Call us today

Home & Garden Q. My front lawn is brown, what can I do as I don’t want this to happen every year? The dry weather has wreaked havoc with plants and also wildlife. Withered and drought stressed plants do not produce the nectar needed for pollinators to feed on. For this reason, I water the most pollinator friendly plants in the summer and especially when we are groundwater scarce (you can also put out a saucer of water filled with pebbles or stones as somewhere for them to drink from). But as for lawns, well I try to leave them to their own devices as much as possible. They will recover when the rains and autumn come. A good moss and thatch rake in the autumn will be needed though to help them, and a dollop of feed to go with it. If all this seems increasingly unsustainable (and arguably it is), then there are several options to help. Water wisely – if you are going to water the lawn, water in the late evening and long and hard, but less

Horticulturist and garden designer/ consultant Hannah Hobbs-Chell is the gardener at High Mead Farm, looking after four acres of gardens and landscape. If you have a question for her, email:hannah.hobbschell@ outlook.com including a picture if relevant

Horticulture with Hannah regularly. Choose to embrace a few weeds and a longer lawn as this will help the grass cope with the heat better, and lawn weeds are often better at staying green for longer. If the lawn has

to go, choose a planted gravel garden, or a low shrub border with bark chip paths. It makes me sad to see so many front gardens paved or shingled over with little or no foliage, and this

only exacerbates the climate and water scarcity problem in the long term. If you need a little inspiration, Pinterest is a good place to start, or contact a garden designer or consultant to give you a guiding hand. Q. What is the best option to block noise from the road? Sound waves bounce and ricochet, and you need height and density in either/or/ both your fence and hedge to successfully allow the sound to ‘bounce’ over you, or to be absorbed. Both fences and hedges can achieve a good sound barrier, and can be used together to good effect. A shorter solid fence with a hedge the other side rising above it can work really well, and be a superb pollution absorber too. You really need something at least 2m high, but if your home is slightly lower than the road then you will be okay with a slightly shorter boundary, and vice versa. When thinking about a sound barrier from traffic noise, you would do well to think too about

pollution. It’s a silent health hazard that we tend not to think about within our homes. Trees and shrubs are very competent at absorbing carbon dioxide and many other particulates, and a densely grown hedge will help to combat the effects of pollution from the surrounding air as well as noise from traffic and machinery and neighbour’s gardens. Recommendations are that planting should be as close to the source of the problem as possible as this will inevitably be more effective. Evergreen plants with dense growth from the ground upwards will supply all year-round cover better than deciduous varieties, perhaps interspersed with some taller trees dependent upon the size of the problem. If planting to a budget, Thuja plicata Atrovirens or Western Red Cedar hedging plants may be an option as it has a very dense habit and very fast growth so smaller plants can be purchased initially. Green Leylandii hedging plants are also a fast-growing species but would need careful management to keep the hedge pruned as a dense structure. English Yew, the most majestic of hedges that filter noise and pollution does a superb job but has a much slower growing habit so if the problem needs containing urgently then larger plants would need to be purchased. Common or Cherry Laurel, Portugal Laurel, Griselinia, beech and the slower growing Holly hedging plants all make good sound

barriers even though not quite as tight knit growth as Thuja or Yew. However, the larger foliage of some of the varieties is said to provide better noise reduction than smaller leaves. Pruning at the right times of the year maintains density. Fencing needs to be thick and solid, with no gaps for sound to pass through. And you can also get sound absorbing panels that you can attach to fencing for an added dampener. Also think about adding a water feature. Several scientific studies have proven that the sound of water lessens the perceived annoyance and noise level of traffic and other aggravating sounds significantly. Q. I have too many courgettes – help! Ha ha, every year gardeners lament at the gluts of veg, me included! Fresh home grown fruit and veg is glorious, and there are so many ways to celebrate and enjoy it, even for many months to come yet. Freeze what you can, look up some exciting new recipes to try, pickles, chutneys and jams are always nice, and make good Christmas presents too (sorry, I mentioned the C word!), try dehydrating, or give away to friends and neighbours. And don’t forget we also have the Ferndown Community Larder and Food Bank, who would love to relieve you of your excess to support those less fortunate or to simply share and share alike. together

Over the weeks you will witness the alchemy - the clear oil will turn red! I use this for massaging achy muscles and in the depths of February it is so nice to be reminded of the deep heat of August. Some people have a reaction to this oil so please just try a tiny bit on your skin first and leave for 24 hours as you would a hair dye tester. Some plums are ripe for the picking now. We have a tree in the garden but I do know of a few wild ones out there in the Dorset countryside. It’s nice to get a mixture and see if you can learn new varieties. And possibly try to grow new ones from the stones even if you plant them in a secret place in the wild! Lastly, of course the blackberries are beckoning. Never mind salted caramel, the best flavour is blackberry with a smattering of sea salt and heaps of apple and custard !

Farming & Environment

A day at the farm

Pictures: TIFFANY FLEMING

with Tiffany Fleming

Tiffany Fleming is a volunteer at High Mead Farm in Longham, Ferndown. High Mead Farm is a working farm run to promote the benefits of engaging with animals, soil, and nature. They ‘create purposeful roles for our cofarmers, young people and adults alike, to help bring about a sense of wellbeing and self-worth that many have never experienced before’. As July melts seamlessly into August, and the sun continues to shine, the hubbub and hectic pace at High Mead softens, and the farm seems to transform into a muted version of itself. The school holidays herald a drop in Co-Farmer attendance, and the Saturday Kids Club is quieter than usual so, by midafternoon, practically the only sounds you hear are the gentle movements of the animals and the tinkle-tinkle of the chimebells in the sensory garden. Whilst the soporific mood is

soothing to the senses, it signals tougher times ahead for the staff who, quite apart from relying on the Co-Farmers to undertake the bulk of the farm chores, also rely on them for the farm’s income. Luckily, with the Farm Shop now established, there is a regular source of support, because every penny profit it makes, gets ploughed straight back into the farm. It does seem ironic that when the harvest is at its peak and there is the most to do at the farm, the quieter it is. However, this is also the perfect time to prepare for the winter months ahead and crucial maintenance and preparation

to welcome the ponies back to the farm; they have been much missed. There is also work being done on the Farm Shop, which celebrated its first birthday in July – coincidentally on a day when I covered for one of our shop volunteers. It was wonderful to see how far we’ve come in just 12 short months. The shop has become a social centre for staff, volunteers, and Co-Farmers alike, and at times, the volume of visitors is such that they spill outside, patiently waiting their opportunity to make a purchase or, for some, simply to bring you up to date on their latest news and views. I certainly never imagined, when the shop was in the planning, that it would become such a popular meeting place and one on which so many

Time for the ‘show at the mow’

Sunday, August 14, sees the second annual ‘Show at the Mow’, a free-entry vintage tractor show, hosted by the East Dorset Tractor Pack, who are well known for their local tractor runs and rallies. Donations to Friends of Victoria Hospital, Wimborne would be welcome. The location of the show is the field adjacent to the Barley Mow public house,

Colehill Lane, Colehill, BH21 7AH. Some parking is available. Here you will be able to see a selection of vintage and classic tractors featuring marques such as Ferguson, Fordson, Nuffield, David Brown, Ford, Massey Ferguson and International Harvester, to name but a few, dating from the 1940s up to the late 1970s.

The owners will generally be present to answer any questions that visitors may have. The static show will be displayed from 10am to 3pm and is sponsored by the Friends of Ferguson Heritage and the Ford & Fordson Association. More details are available on Facebook: East Dorset Trac Pac.

At the heart of a rural day out people rely. If it wasn’t for our awesome team of fabulous shop volunteers, none of this would be possible so I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them for their time, patience, and good humour! In terms of the farm and its produce, we are enjoying an abundance of cucurbits – cucumbers and courgettes being the most prolific and which I learned only very recently, are considered botanically as fruits. Well, fruit or veg it makes little difference – we’ve got tons of them. There’s nothing quite like the flavour of a lightly-sautéed courgette to perk up your pasta – and while on the subject of cooking, it reminds me that August also signals the first of our training-kitchen Co-Farmer courses. I have informally nominated myself as Chief Taste Tester – a role I shall be taking most seriously!

Livestock and agriculture will take even more of a starring role this year at one of the region’s most celebrated rural days out, the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show. The region’s renowned agricultural event, which takes place on August 17 at Turnpike Showground near Motcombe, believes showcasing agriculture to its 30,000 visitors is a priority. This year it will bring the much-loved Grand Parade of Livestock, sponsored by Woolley & Wallis, to its main ring for the first time in over 15 years. The Gritchie Brewing Co Main Ring will see the champion cattle and sheep parade – the best of the best in the expanse of the ring, including rare and minority breeds. Giles Simpson, right, local farmer and agronomist, newly-appointed as the show chairman, said: “This spectacular parade sums up what this agricultural show is

all about. Our aim this year has been to put livestock and agriculture truly at the heart of the show. “This is an event where business gets done in the agricultural sector, which will now have agricultural and rural businesses on all four sides of the ring.” This year, the show welcomes more than 85 agricultural businesses including machinery dealerships, buyers, suppliers,

agents and farmers - a key date in the rural calendar for agricultural businesses to come together for networking and business opportunities. The Food and Farming Area combines entertainment and education on all things to do with dairy and beef farming. James Cox, show Organiser explained: “From field to fork, we want to give visitors a unique insight into the facts and myths about this industry worth £112 billion and employing more than four million people.” The evolution of farming is also celebrated with the Heavy Horse Village and Steam Section twice as big as last year. You can see the gentle giants that worked the land hundreds of years ago put through their paces through to puffing steam engines and the revolution of modern farming machinery that we see in the fields today. Knitting and crochet are calming, relaxing and therapeutic and are great stress-busters! You can develop your creativity and gain new skills and techniques as you knit or crochet garments, toys and accessories. You can choose to work alone, join or develop a group of like minded people to create a project together and make new contacts and friends. The beautiful knitted and crochet figures we have seen on top of post boxes since the Queens’ Jubilee is a

winning example of creative group working. Increasingly, young people are seeing and feeling the joys of knitting and crochet, often the basics are taught in their own families by grandparents, who are passing on their skills and knowledge. We also run workshops at KnitWits and with the wonderful range of yarns available, pure wool, silk mixes, cotton and alpaca, knitting and crochet will surely continue to grow in popularity.

Get set for a season of high heritage

by Faith Eckersall From Nursing in the 1970s to the Battle of Hastings, East Dorset Heritage Trust has a wealth of fascinating things for folk to do during this autumn and winter. The Trust is holding a series of talks and walks, all designed to increase people’s knowledge of the world and the culture around them. The season kicks off on Friday, September 2, at 2pm with Treading The Wards, Lottie Dale’s amusing tale of what nursing was really like in the 1970s at Barts Hospital in London. It continues with a Wimborne Town Walk at 10am on Thursday, September 8. The six-miler will take people through new and old Wimborne, then west along the River Stour to Eye Bridge, returning along the course of a Roman Road to the Stour and ending at Wimborne Town Football Club. Photographer Hattie Miles will be heading the Highcliffe Cliff-Hangar Walk on Monday, September 26, at 10.30am. Using the coastal path, Hattie will be regaling walkers with tales of the Selfridges and other well-known people connected to Highcliffe, as well as looking at the area’s fascinating geology, the devastating effects

of the 1987 hurricane and much more. Friends members can visit Wimborne Coffee Roasters on Monday, October 3, at 10am, for a talk hosted by Cheyne, who can trace his roasting history back to 1972, when his dad, Derek, started roasting in his delicatessen. Sadly, the 70s was not the right time for artisanal coffee but, he says, five decades later the world is a totally different place. Giles Keating will be giving a talk at Athelhampton on Wednesday, October 12, at 2pm, about his home, which is described as one of England’s most important Tudor manor houses. Economist Mr Keating became its new owner in 2019 and will be explaining what made him take this momentous decision. Amongst other things he’ll be explaining how he’s used solar heat pumps and made his home carbon neutral. Tuesday, October 25, sees a talk by James Porter at Allendale House in Wimborne on the Battle of Hastings, with Steve

Herra giving a talk on the iconic designer, Coco Chanel, at the same venue on November 25. Another fascinating talk to look forward to at the same venue is Keepers Lodge – A House Through The Passing Of Time by David Smith. He reveals the property’s history and how it was uncovered. The Trust is also running a number of talks on art during the autumn and winter, from The Beginnings Of Modern Art, to Durer’s Journeys, examining the influence these had on this giant

of

the Renaissance, and Joshua Reynolds, examining the portraitist’s legacy. Other talks include one on Constable’s Late Works and the work of the increasingly popular early 20th century artist, Eric Ravillious, who worked as a War Artist and was an outstanding engraver and printmaker. Budding writers may want to join the Writing For Pleasure course run by John Jenkins from September 12, learn Italian with Isabella Lorusso or Spanish with Susana Prado Casal. There will also be a selection of French courses, from beginners to French conversation. Potential artisans should consider the five-week pottery course, which runs alongside a wealth of other crafts and arts courses or the six-week archaeology courses run by Chris Tripp, Meanwhile, if your life’s ambition is to finally master your laptop or iMac, then EDHT is offering 1-21 mini courses to help you achieve this. n All the experiences mentioned in this piece incur a cost and some are only open to EDHT members. Museum keeping up activities There’s been a whirlwind of fun activities so far this summer, says the Museum of East Dorset. We’ve had everything from Romans to Little Scientists STEM Craft morning, to outdoor theatre, and of course, our big 60th birthday summer fete. But there’s still much more to come. Every day we have a Summer Trail and self-led children’s craft activity in the museum which are included in admission price. There’s much for children and adults to see and do – learn about the former residents of the house, see our Tarrant Man iron age skeleton, and try out some lessons in our Victorian School Room. And make sure you leave some time to enjoy refreshments from the tearoom in our mediaeval

walled garden. Little Explorers can join us on Tuesday, August 16, for a fun-filled morning making time capsules that celebrate ‘All about me’ as part of our ‘East Dorset Celebrates’ exhibition. Entrance is via the tearoom and costs just £3 per child, from 10am. More details can be found on our website at museumofeastdorset.co.uk/ project/little-explorers-mytime-capsule.

Not forgetting crafts for the grown-ups too. We are delighted to welcome Tamsin Loveday from Barefoot Bindery to the museum for ‘Six Bound Books’, a fabulous introduction to book binding techniques, on Wednesday, August 24. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. More information at museumofeastdorset.co.uk/ project/six-sewn-bindingsbookbinding-workshop.

Although it is not currently a legal requirement, please consider wearing a face covering to protect yourself and others when visiting the Tivoli.

Long-awaited return for county architectural week This year sees the return of the long-awaited Dorset Architectural Heritage Week, having been absent from our diaries for two years, reports East Dorset Heritage Trust. The week-long free event across the whole of Dorset celebrates our rich historic environment. Sixty properties are taking part this year, some of which are not normally open to the public, while other familiar buildings will open their doors for special events or to offer behind the scenes tours. There is a rich mix of participants which makes the whole event an exciting week for us all. There is literally something for everyone! We are thrilled to have the Palace Court Theatre in Bournemouth open its doors for a behind the scenes tour as it undergoes a major refurbishment by the Arts University Bournemouth, its new owners. Dorchester will be closing its High Street to cars and opening its doors for a ‘Discover Dorchester’ event that promises to be an exciting celebration of our county town. There will be old favourites like Sturminster Newton Mill, the House Boat and the Boat House in Poole, plus several events in Wimborne, Blandford, Christchurch, Bournemouth, Bridport, Lyme Regis and Weymouth. How about a guided walk of Swanage Seafront by the architects that have breathed new life into the old seaside holiday favourite? Allendale House, the home of Dorset Architectural Heritage Week, will open its doors for an open day with railway exhibitions and

tours plus four Landmark Trust properties – Belmont, Dunshay Manor, Clavell Tower and Woodsford Castle will also be open. The booklet is available in all Libraries and Tourist Information Centres across

Project produces a Song for the World

Musician John Biggs of Verwood has penned a song to raise awareness of Global Warming. He says: “I wrote the song last year and included the school choir from Emmanuel school in Verwood. They sing the chorus lines with a nine-year-old soloist at the end. “I sing the verses and play guitar and there will be strings and keyboard on the song as well. “The song is now finished and should now be on Spotify and YouTube. “The ‘A’ side has me singing the verses the school choir singing the chorus lines with a soloist at the end. “It has various layers, guitar, piano, cello and strings

running through it to give it emotion and sensitivity. “The cover shows the world being held up with two hands emphasising that the world is

really in our hands. “All proceeds will go to global warming issues and I hope, with promotion, it will make a difference and

children’s voices will be heard. “The choir members are all aged between nine and 12 years.”

Appeal to realise late dog rescuer’s dream

Staffie and Stray Rescue (SSR) specialise in taking in more difficult dogs that are considered in the rescue world harder to rehome. Many of our dogs come from the pounds, they are dumped and unclaimed and therefore more often than not, we never really know any history on the dogs, where they have come from or what they have been through. Sadly, we are heartbroken to announce that leader of the pack Calli Byrne died in July, aged 48, following a brief illness. Calli started with a dream - to help rescue and rehome the oftenmisunderstood breed, the Staffordshire bull terrier. Her incredible passion and dedication to the dogs has directly impacted the success of SSR today. She will be sorely missed by her family,

the rescue team, foster homes, adopters, supporters of the charity, users of the charity and many, many more. Calli’s dream was to build a sanctuary of her own for the dogs and we will continue to push for Calli’s Kennels and make her dreams come true. It has always been a long-term dream and goal for the rescue to have a sanctuary

to call our own. A statement said: ‘We cannot thank you enough Calli for inspiring us and being such an important part in the rescue world, being someone that actively made a difference to animal welfare in the UK.’ She has helped to rescue and rehome nearly 700 dogs. The team at SSR are asking for donations to be made to the charity in Calli’s memory, which will go towards her dream of opening her own kennels. Donations can be made at staffieandstrayrescue.co.uk.

Why does my pet’s breath smell? We’re a nation of pet lovers and who doesn’t love an affectionate lick or nuzzle from their furry companion? Receiving affection from our pets is a joy, apart from when their breath can literally take your breath away! Smelly breath or ‘halitosis’ is most commonly caused by dental disease. You may notice some brown staining on the teeth, reddening of gums, drooling and sometimes difficulty when your pet chews hard biscuits/treats. Some pets may not show any of these signs, besides bad breath; they might just appear quieter than normal or have some weight loss. Your vet should carry out an oral examination as part of a general health check when they can then assess how healthy your pet’s mouth is. Discussion will then take place as to whether any dental work is necessary. It’s important to have an at-home oral hygiene routine for your pet, as prevention is always going to be better than cure. Your vet can advise on the best options for you and your pet.

Breathe on me, breath of dog! At times, a pet’s breath may exhibit a ‘fishy’ odour. This is often associated with full anal glands; a problem that is quick and easy for your vet to treat. In rare cases, pets can have bad breath if their organs are not functioning properly, namely, kidney disease.

This is the least common reason for bad breath in pets, but if you do notice your pet has smellier breath than normal it’s important to get it checked out for peace of mind. Cats can also suffer with bad breath/ halitosis and so it’s important to check the mouths of our feline friends too.

Speakers announced for Rugby Lunch

Diverse Abilities, Dorset’s disability charity, has announced the speakers for its Rugby Lunch at Hoburne Park, Christchurch, on Friday, September 16. The lunch includes great entertainment, networking opportunities, and guest celebrity appearances from Tom Shanklin - former Welsh Rugby Union player who played outside centre for Cardiff Blues and Wales and has scored 20 tries for his country, placing him fifth equal (with Gerald Davis and Gareth Edwards) on the list of record try-scorers for Wales, and David Flatman, pictured above – former prop for Bath and the England national rugby team turned pundit. Over the past 11 years the event has raised a combined total of more than £260,000. Lucy Rowley, events officer at Diverse Abilities, said: “If you’re a rugby fan, then this is the perfect event for you, so get in quick and get your tickets.” The sporting lunch kicks off at 12pm with welcome drinks and a VIP

reception for sponsors, before guests take their seats for a three-course meal and hear from the celebrity speakers. There will also be an opportunity to win the famous Knife, Fork, and Spoon game, raffle prizes, and auction lots,

of which prizes are donated from local businesses and the community. Tickets for the sporting lunch are £65 per ticket, and £600 for a table of 10. Visit diverseabilities.org.uk/rugby for more information and to book a place.

Wimborne reigning on scorching day by Peter Impett A scorching hot day in Exeter saw Wimborne take a major step forward towards the league title. Winning by more than 400 points this was an emphatic victory. Everybody played their part. Distance runners suffered in the heat but chalked up points as did the band of officials. Team manager Paula Hine donned the spikes to score points in the 100 metres and long jump. Will Langridge was the star performer with his grade 1 Under 15 triple jump in 12m35. Harry Jones was the other winner in the under 15s with a 10m79 shot putt. Will teamed up with Woody van der Felz, Alfie Fry and Charlie Cleall to set a new club record in the relay in 49.56.

The under 15 girls scored heavily with Lucy Lucas winning the shot in 8m99, Daisy Sindall winning the pole vault 2m30 and Leilani Roberts the hammer in 22m96. Wimborne dominate the under 13 age groups. The reliable Olivia Jones was a winner in the shot 8m04 and Iris Jones (no relation) scored good points in the 100 metres with a second-placed 14.41 and 200 29.61. Kayla Robbins was also second in the high jump with a personal best 1m35. Zachary Fricker won the boys 100 in 13.35 the long jump with 4m74 and was second in the 200 metres 28.08. In the under 17 age group Harry Woods 5m87 and Jakob Roberts 5m86 scored maximum points in the long jump. Jakob Roberts also won the

If you’re caught drink driving, or driving under the influence of drugs you could get a possible driving ban, 6 months in prison and an unlimited fine. This varies depending on the severity of the offence. Some drink driving offences include: Being in charge of a vehicle while above the legal limit or unfit through drink Driving or attempting to drive while above the legal limit or unfit through drink Refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink You might see your car insurance prices increase as a result of a drink or drug driving offence. Make sure of your powers Did you know that if your parents became ill and needed help to manage their money, you would not automatically be able to take over and deal with things on their behalf? Nobody would automatically be able to use their bank account or have access to their savings. Unless your parents have planned ahead and made the proper arrangements, you won’t have the vital powers you need to be able to use your parents’ money to pay their bills. You won’t be able to step in or take over if your parents become confused or develop dementia and need to pay for care. The solution is for your parents to create the formal legal documents that give you the ability to help them

manage their money, either temporarily or long term, and allow you to access services on their behalf. These legal documents are called Lasting Powers of Attorney and are complex forms which need to be completed correctly to be valid. We can help your parents to put these documents in place to make sure they are ready to use if the need arises. If you have any unanswered questions, or would like a home visit for help to make these important documents, please get in touch by calling 07860 772274 or emailing christine@winterbornelegal. co.uk. Christine is a member of Solicitors for the Elderly and a Dementia Friend.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney, and do you need one? If you need somebody to rely on in later years, perhaps to take over making decisions on your behalf, that person will need your formal written authority. This authority is given by creating a Lasting Power of Attorney. Lasting Powers of Attorney are documents that, when registered, mean you have given another person legal power to deal with financial decisions for you, or medical and welfare decisions. At Winterborne Legal Services we can help you to put suitable protection in place in your Lasting Power of Attorney, so that you can be comfortable giving power to your children. Making a Lasting Power of Attorney can be a big leap of faith for you, if you have any questions we are ready to help. Please call us on 07860 772274 or email christine@winterbornelegal.co.uk

by Andrew Diprose What a birthday! Julie Laming, above, had never won anything like it in her life. Until her 45th birthday. The Principal of Mad4Dance dance school received the top Business of the Year award at the inaugural Christchurch Business Awards. Mad4Dance, founded by Julie in 2004 and now with 300 students a week aged three upwards, was also named Health, Beauty and Fitness Business of the Year. Julie, who is the founder of the charity Helping Young Minds, said: “I feel quite overwhelmed. “It was great to win the health, beauty and fitness category – and it means a lot to me – but to be the overall winner when there are so many amazing businesses here was unbelievable.” Husband Mark added: “I’m really, really proud. “She’s done so much over the last 15 years so to be recognised in this way makes it feel really special.” A total of 14 awards were presented at the lunchtime event, held at the Captain’s Club Hotel & Spa. Christchurch mayor Avril

Coulton described the event as ‘absolutely fabulous’. She added: “I’m amazingly proud of Christchurch and its businesses. “Christchurch has my heart.” Nigel Reeve, of MW Events, which organised the awards – one of 12 in towns across Dorset – said he had been surprised by both the number, and variety, of entries. He said: “As with our other awards, there was a huge increase in the number of entries in the Green/Eco category. “The range of businesses taking part was also very impressive. “Overall we had 202 entries and nominations which, for an area the size of Christchurch, is huge. “When the votes started coming in, and we started to see who were the winners, it was the range of businesses that really surprised me.” Dorset Biz News was official media partner for the awards while Hot Radio was the radio partner.
