Saturday 26 January Santiago (Chile): first Summit between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. It will bring together European, Latin American and Caribbean Heads of State and Government. The central theme is “Alliance for Sustainable Development: Promoting Social and Environmental Quality Investments” (till 27 Jan.). The EU will be represented by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized every year by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation. It has been held since 1991 and has received more than 3 million entries from children (6 14) in over 150 countries. The theme of the 22nd painting competition will be “Water: The Source of Life”. Students of art and design from participating countries will be invited to submit original posters on the theme “Keeping the Memory Alive – Journeys through the Holocaust” in keeping with the 2014 designated theme of the United Nations Holocaust and Outreach Programme. The 12 highest ranking posters will enjoy high-profile display around the world. Prizes will be awarded for winning designs and the posters will be exhibited extensively.
