Security Council 1540 Committee

The Security Council consists of 15 Member States of the United Nations (five permanent members and ten nonpermanent members), in accordance with the provisions of Article 23 of the United Nations Charter as amended in 1965.

On 15 October 2009 (decision 64/402), the General Assembly elected Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria for a two-year term beginning on 1 January 2010, to replace Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Croatia, Libya and Viet Nam, whose terms of office were to expire on 31 December 2009. PRESIDENT The presidency of the Council rotates monthly, according to the English alphabetical listing of its Member States. Military Staff Committee The Military Staff Committee consists of the chiefs of staff of the permanent members of the Security Council or their representatives. It meets fortnightly.

Standing committees Each of the three standing committees of the Security Council is composed of representatives of all Council members: Committee of Experts (to examine the provisional rules of procedure of the Council and any other matters entrusted to it by the Council); Committee on the Admission of New Members; Committee on Council Meetings Away from Headquarters.
