LIVELIHOODS

Livelihoods comprise the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stress and shocks and maintain or enhance capabilities and assets, both now and in the future, while contributing net benefits to other livelihoods in the short and longterm.

LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES

In accordance with World Bank country classification, low- and middleincome countries are identified on the basis of gross national income (GNI) per capita. In this report, low- and middle-income countries refer to all economies that had a GNI per capita of USD12,276 or less in 2010. Lowand middle-income countries refer to all economies that are not in the high-income group. For the purposes of the current report, low- and middleincome countries are referred to as “the South”.

MEGACITY

An urban agglomeration with a population of 10 million of more.

METROPOLITAN AREA/REGION

A region consisting of a densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure and housing.

MIGRANT STOCK

The number of migrants residing in a given location at a particular point in time.

MIGRATION CORRIDOR

Generally viewed as the migratory pathway between two different countries, whereby individuals born in, or holding the nationality of, a certain country move to another country.

NORTH

High-income countries, as classified by the World Bank.

OUTMIGRATION

To leave a region, community, etc., to move or settle into a different part of one’s country or home territory.

PERI-URBANIZATION

The process of urban growth that creates hybrid landscapes with both urban and rural characteristics, immediately surrounding a city or town, between the suburbs and the countryside.

RECEIVING COUNTRY

Country of destination (host country). In the case of return or repatriation, it is also the country of origin.
