Review of Developments in Transport in Asia and the Pacific 2011
Economic Report on Africa 2012: Unleashing Africa’s Potential as a Pole of Global Growth
Economic Commission for Africa
African Union
This review is biennially produced by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). It describes the environment within which the transport sector is developing and the principal challenges that this environment poses to governments, the transport industry and society at large. The publication also focuses on tracing the significant development of roads, railways, shipping, ports, inland waterways and air transport industries and infrastructure in the region. In addition, it considers the changing delivery mechanisms across all transport sectors and discusses urban transport issues. Finally, the review examines the process of globalization, trade agreements related to transport, regionalism, collocation of production transport facilities, as well as intermodal transport systems.
This publication assesses long-term trends in Africa’s growth, analyses the factors behind the recent growth momentum, and provides global perspectives on the key challenges to be addressed, which are critical to unleashing the role of Africa as a global growth pole. The main aim of this publication is to facilitate discussion on concrete policy directions and actions at both national and regional levels that would help Africa realize its growth potential. As in previous editions, the first part of the report examines recent economic and social developments as well as some selected current and emerging development issues in Africa. The second part focuses on the question of how to address key constraints and unleash the potential of the continent as a new pole of global growth.

Globalization and Economic Diversification: Policy Challenges for Economies in Transition
Survey of Economic and Social Developments in the ESCWA Region 2010-2011
The transition countries in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Central Asia were hit harder than any other region in the world by the global recession of 2008–2009. Economic recovery started in the second half of 2009, but—for most of these economies—the crisis made painfully clear that the transition from a centrally planned to an open market economy has brought about new prosperity which is highly sensitive to global economic shocks. This publication aims to answer fundamental questions and spell out policy options to address the challenges for these economies in transition. It includes comparative studies focusing on all transition economies, including Central and Eastern Europe, as well as regions such as Western Balkans and the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Economic and Social Developments
This survey is mainly a technical view of the major factors and variables affecting Arab economies, with an attempt to bridge the huge gap between the social and the economic by dedicating a chapter to social policy, with focus on major recent trends in health, education, and social protection in member countries. It provides data and attempts to understand and explain the dynamics of regional, subregional and country social and economic trends. The survey aims to provide interested readers, governments, and the general public with a snapshot of the current socio-economic situation and the outlook for 2012.

This report surveys research and policy in the field of gender and economic development, with particular emphasis on economic literature and practice. It is mainly based on an analytical framework for applying gender and economic development concepts to policy by linking production relations in the household to macroeconomy. It provides a history of gender and economic development thought, and includes a statistical overview of women and men in developing economies, covering data on employment, Millennium Development Goals, and composite indices of gender equality. It also contrasts standard economic approaches to macroeconomy with one that reflects how meso-level institutions like markets or the public sector are themselves "bearers of gender", explicitly incorporating the production of human capabilities in the domestic sector.
This publication is the tenth issue of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Innocenti Report Card Series, built around a "league table", ranking countries according to their performance on a key child indicator or group of indicators. It investigates poverty and vulnerability among children in rich countries using a perspective that goes beyond the traditional monetary approach and includes measures of multidimensional poverty. The research uses the most up-to-date data for the most economically advanced countries. The report attempts to show which countries are allowing children to fall behind by more than is necessary in education, health and material well-being, using the best performing countries as a minimum standard for what can be achieved.
The Hidden Alternative: Co-operative Values, Past, Present and Future
In light of the recent global economic recession, this publication seeks to challenge the hegemony of the investor led business model in economics and business studies, and needs to be promoted in relation to these debates. The contributions to this book demonstrate that co-operation offers a real and much needed alternative for the organization of human economic and social affairs, one that should establish its place at the forefront of public and academic discussion and policy making. It includes chapters on education, fair trade, politics and governance, planning, and sustainability and on how co-operatives have coped with the global economic crisis.

It provides an overview of the policy instruments most useful for developing economies. This innovative work also reminds us that we must act now if we are to unlock the potential of current and emerging energy efficiency technologies. The opportunities are significant — by reducing energy inputs per unit of output we will benefit from improvements in standards of living while protecting the environment.

This publication analyzes the socio-economic impact of conflict and its spillover effects on food insecurity in the ESCWA region. It argues that conflict-affected countries and territories can promote food security nationally and that the nexus between conflict and food insecurity can be broken through the provision of new economic opportunities. It studies sectoral and country-level policies and explores regional policy options while identifying data gaps and opportunities for further research, stressing that food security and conflict are intertwined regional issues. The publication includes policy recommendations for Iraq, Palestine, the Sudan and Yemen, as well as the region and the international community on the development of national and regional policies and programmes to support food security while mitigating the impact of conflict.
This publication examines the main debates under way on social protection and co-responsibility transfer programmes in the region. It identifies the role played by these programmes and considers the conceptual elements, needs and the challenges that will have to be overcome to consolidate comprehensive social protection systems in Latin America. The authors argue that these should be solidarity-based systems that provide universal coverage and are essentially egalitarian in the guarantees established as citizens’ rights. Citizenship as a whole is thus becoming part of protection policies as the region moves towards allencompassing social policies that combine the complementary principles of targeting as the instrument and universality as the end.

In a very highly volatile and changing scene in the aftermath of the Arab uprising, understanding the present in view of the recent past and projecting the near future is almost an impossible task. The ground rules of the Arab economies that prevailed in the past decades have all been put to the test, and a dramatic review of the political economy of the previous social contract is out for questioning and even outright rejection by the masses who roamed the streets of cities since the beginning of 2010.
