Achieving Global Sustainability: Policy Recommendations

Youth Xchange: Climate Change and Lifestyles Guidebook

This book looks at how to achieve a more secure level of global sustainability and gathers recommendations. It analyzes the relationship between globalization and sustainability, evaluating arguments on the necessity of fundamental changes in economic growth and discusses the radical evolutions in socioeconomic development in terms of social common capital, social discipline and economic valuation of the environment. The publication also examines strategies for achieving a sustainable society and presents an overview on adaptation for environmental change. Finally, it introduces policy recommendations for global sustainability, including those advocating a low-carbon society by 2050, a "Green New Deal" as a means of integrating policies, climate security, and international discipline.

This publication explores the interrelationship between climate change and lifestyles through a scientific, political, economic, social, ethical and cultural angle and identifies actions young people might take towards more sustainable lifestyles. It channels the relevant information related to climate change in a less abstract and frightening manner, helping young people develop alternate visions and set goals towards improving their future. This guidebook provides information, case studies and useful tips around topics relevant to young people and their everyday lives, such as food and drink, travel and transport, leisure and entertainment.

R I O+20 / E N V I R O N ME N T A N D U R BA N I S S U E S

This first report focuses on the demand for and use of natural resources, as drivers and as consequences of economic activity and social development. It provides an overview of resource use patterns in Asia and the Pacific, explains why sustainable resource use and resource efficiency will become an economic and social imperative for the region, and presents information on how resource efficiency and sustainable resource use might be achieved through careful policy design. It aims to inform policymakers and practitioners working on integrated environment and development strategies and also those working on sustainability policies in general.

This report supports the preparations for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, where one of the themes will be green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. It is authored by a panel of independent experts who examined a number of public policy options, including macroeconomic, technology, industrial and trade policies, as well as the role of the international community for promoting a widespread and equitable pursuit of a green economy transition, particularly for developing countries. By taking a structuralist approach, the authors underline that the transition to a green economy involves no less than a technological transformation, with deep impacts on production structures as well as on consumption patterns.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) databases provide fundamental energy, materials, land, water consumption data and emissions data into water, air and soil for a wide range of processes, products and materials. In this way the publication provides the bridge between the data users and the data providers, making basic information easily accessible for computing the environmental footprints of materials and products that are key to make and judge green claims and to allow institutional and individual consumers to make informed consumption choices. It includes how to collect raw data, how to develop datasets and how to manage databases. It also addresses questions concerning data documentation and review, coordination among databases, capacity building and future scenarios.

This book demonstrates the value of ecosystems and biodiversity to the economy, society and individuals. It underlines the urgency of strategic policy making and action at national and international levels, and presents a rich evidence base of policies and instruments and a wide range of innovative solutions. It also underlines the needs and ways to transform our approach to natural capital, promote the protection of our environment and contribute to a sustainable economy and the well-being of societies.

Special Report on Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation

Orangutans and the Economics of Sustainable Forest Management in Sumatra

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change and its potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Its report examines the potential role of renewable energy in the mitigation of climate change for policymakers, the private sector, academic researchers and civil society. It covers six renewable energy sources — bioenergy, direct solar energy, geothermal energy, hydropower, ocean energy and wind energy — as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It considers the environmental and social consequences associated with the deployment of these technologies, and presents strategies to overcome technical as well as nontechnical obstacles to their application and diffusion.

Deforestation is responsible for approximately 17% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is therefore a major contributor to climate change, but also to the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services and a direct threat to Asia’s great ape, the orangutan. This book offers an overview of the many ecosystem services that the orangutan's forest habitat provides in Sumatra and how estimates for revenue from payments for ecosystem service schemes compare with revenue from other land-use scenarios. This report also aims to emphasize the strong link that exists between biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being, to raise awareness and to seek more careful management of natural resources.

This large and comprehensive encyclopaedia, which covers all 72 species of toothed whales, includes the most recent scientific findings on the distribution, migration, behaviour and threats to toothed whales. Toothed whales can be found in a wide range of marine and freshwater habitats, and from the Arctic and Antarctic regions to the tropics. Some of the species can also be found living in large river systems such as the Amazon, Ganges, Indus and Yangtze. This publication will be of interest to all those who are interested in and concerned with the preservation of these large mammals. It will greatly facilitate the development and implementation of action plans that may help reduce the threats to many whale species.

This publication is produced by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as part of “Global Environmental Outlook-5” (GEO -5) Series that is the United Nations’ most authoritative assessment of the state, trends and outlook of the global environment. Through data, graphics and satellite images, the report offers wide-ranging information on a number of key issues, including population, climate change, energy, resource efficiency, forests, food security and land use, and drinking water. The report points out that the lack of sufficient, solid data and monitoring systems to measure progress remains obstacles to achieving the environmental goals set by the international community. It also highlights the missing pieces in our knowledge about the state of the environment, calling for global efforts to collect scientifically-credible data for environmental monitoring.
