Energetic and open to new technologies, young people can transform global politics and culture.

Promoting the health and productivity of the world’s older people can mitigate the challenges faced by ageing societies.

This book provides evidence of how much we have achieved in providing universal access, and weighs that against our vision for the future: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. This report contains scientific analysis, personal insights from world leaders and the results of extensive national and regional consultations at the front lines of the AIDS response. While perspectives differ, one simple truth emerges: we cannot break the arc of this epidemic — where five people were newly infected for every three starting treatment in 2010 — if we adopt a "business as usual" approach.

Seven Opportunities for a World of 7 Billion

Intentional homicide is serious in nature and recorded by multiple data sources (police and public health).1 As such, it is widely accepted as one of the most accurate, reliable and comparable crime indicators for2 world crime trends and patterns. Using data from the United Nations Surveys on Crime Trends and the3 4 Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (UN-CTS) and the latest "homicide statistics" dataset of the United5 Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, this publication provides a global overview of levels and trends of6 intentional homicide and its relationship with, and impact on, human development. It also examines the7 links between homicide and some forms of organized crime, including drug trafficking, as well as the use of firearms. The study describes characteristics of homicide victims and perpetrators (including from the gender perspective) as well as provides detailed data on homicide location.

The State of World Population 2011: People and Possibilities in a World of 7 Billion

In late 2011, the global population reached 7 billion, up from 6 billion in barely 12 years. This publication examines how the world got to this milestone, assessing the impact of factors such as the large strides in health care which allow older people to live longer, more children to survive to adulthood and beyond, as well as policies and other initiatives that allow women to play a stronger role in society. This overview analyzes the latest demographic trends, such as the unprecedented "youth bulge", as well as projections and implications for the quality of life of women, men and young people. The report includes original reporting from China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Finland, India, Mexico, Mozambique, Nigeria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Amphetamines and Ecstasy: 2011 Global ATS Assessment

P U B LI C H EA LT H/P O P U L AT I O N

Disability and the Millennium Development Goals: A Review of the MDG Process and Strategies for Inclusion of Disability Issues in Millennium Development Goal Efforts

This report provides an overview of the global manufacture, trade and use of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and ecstasy, highlighting the nature of the ATS threat and the impact on society. It shows the regional trends for Asia, Oceania , Europe, Africa, North America and Central and South America and the Caribbean. It mainly focuses on countries where available data suggest that the most significant changes have occurred over the past five years. The report also highlights manufacturing methods, constraints of ATS-related data gathering, and forensic data to understand the range of products available in illicit ATS markets.

The framework of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will expire in 2015. In the post-MDGs era, persons with disabilities and disability issues must be an integral part of the international development agenda as the global community considers what will replace the MDGs beyond 2015. This publication is a collaborative effort by United Nations agencies, disability-related organizations and NGOs, as well as advocates and experts from around the world. It provides a "roadmap" for why and how disability can and should be included in the planning, monitoring and evaluation of development-related programmes and policies. It assesses the links between disability and poverty and explores ways to integrate disability issues into current and future development efforts. This book will benefit those working in disability advocacy, programming and outreach efforts.

To prevent the diversion of precursor chemicals for use in the illicit manufacture of drugs, governments must have adequate legislation in line with the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances as well as effective working mechanisms and procedures for information feedback between the authorities involved in the control of precursor chemicals. The International Narcotics Control Board in its annual report examines actions taken recently and highlights both successful results and shortcomings. The 2011 precursors report of the Board presents the latest developments in global precursor chemical control.

UNAIDS commemorates 30 years of the AIDS epidemic by publishing a compilation of 30 milestones, thoughts, images, words, artworks, breakthroughs, inspirations and ideas in response. The special edition of Outlook illustrates timelines on three issues that have shaped the AIDS response — the evolution of access to antiretroviral treatment, HIV/Tuberculosis and the use of condoms. It presents a range of posters from around the world, showing the diverse visual strategies used over the years to communicate messages on AIDS awareness and safer sex. It also presents information on current HIV prevention approaches, human rights and AIDS, gender disparities, HIV data, resources available for AIDS response and recent advancements in the field of science.

Opiates originating in Afghanistan threaten the health and well-being of people in many regions of the world. Their illicit trade also adversely impacts governance, security, stability and development — in Afghanistan, its neighbours, the broader region and beyond. This publication covers worldwide flows of Afghan opiates, as well as trafficking in precursor chemicals used to turn opium into heroin. By providing a better understanding of the global impact of Afghan opiates, this publication can help the international community identify vulnerabilities and possible countermeasures.

This report sets benchmarks and provides forward-looking analysis of the 2015 targets set by the United Nations General Assembly in its 2011 Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS. This publication asks, “how will we get there?” and presents key data and illustrative figures covering the decade 2006-2015. An incisive narrative examines the new global targets in the Political Declaration and in the UNAIDS strategy on AIDS, and it reviews options and implications to stop the AIDS epidemic. Numerical targets are charted and their implications reviewed for each region.
