TRADE LIBERALIZATION, INVESTMENT AND ECONOMIC INTEGRATION IN AFRICAN REGIONAL ECONOMIC COMMUNITIES TOWARDS THE AFRICAN COMMON MARKET

Trade Liberalization, Investment and Economic Integration in African Regional Economic Communities towards the African Common Market

This report reviews the progress in African regional integration processes, suggesting an option for revising the timeframe for accelerating the continental integration. Several recommendations related to accelerating integration; the need for a development-driven regional integration; the focus on export value addition and diversification in manufactured goods and services, and enhancing competition policy and attracting more foreign and domestic investment have since contributed to a decision to fast-track integration through this tripartite process. It concludes that there is urgent need to expand integration, as it currently is very low compared to Asia and Latin America in relation to international trade.

Inefficient trade procedures waste time and resources, while breeding corruption and undermining the efficiency of both control agencies and business. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has worked on the development and promotion of trade facilitation standards for 50 years. The Commission of the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation was created in 2010 in order to foster its Member States' economic development through establishing a common Customs territory, including the implementation of advanced trade facilitation measures. This Glossary should be an invaluable contribution to the promotion of trade facilitation in Russian-speaking countries and to the enhancement of methods of regulation in the Customs Union. It is intended to become an authoritative reference for trade facilitation terms in Russian.

This book provides a wide range of examples of the impact of anti-competitive practices and arrangements on developing country suppliers. Anti-competitive practices and market structures undercut export market opportunities and the productive capacities on which developing country businesses depend. The publication focuses on the impact of state monopolies and abuses of dominant positions in infrastructure markets, the impact of anti-competitive practices in the international distribution and retail sector, and the effect of international cartels. The role and response of the private sector is discussed, as well as the scope for enhanced international cooperation to address these issues.

Export Quality Management

The report has two key objectives - to identify “quality” foreign direct investment (FDI) and to seek an optimal allocation of scarce public funds in Africa by facilitating (largely through investment commotion agencies) the attraction of these investments. Close to 7000 firms (with 36% having foreign involvement) were interviewed in 19 Sub-Saharan African host countries. The report examines the impact of FDI on productivity, training, human capital, competition, employment, wages and trade (exports). The publication of this report is anPatterns important step forward in understanding FDI in Africa, its impact and its prospects. It is the start of a of Internationalization for Developing Country Enterprises process that should see the valuable data that it introduces analyzed and reanalyzed to tease out all the valuable insights that it contains.

The publication reviews progress in African regional integration and suggests accelerating continental integration. Several recommendations relate to accelerating integration; taking into account international trade policy and strengthening trade negotiators' capacities; and the need for development-driven regional integration. The focus, inter alia, is on export value addition, diversification in manufactured goods and services and attracting more foreign and domestic investment. The establishment of a Multi-Agency Task Force on the African Common Market and Economic Community is recommended to monitor progress in regional integration and undertake studies on strengthening economic integration in specific areas. The study provides comprehensive research and analysis on Africa's intra-trade flows and recommends their expansion.

The fifth of the series (ARIAV) has come at a time of renewed enthusiasm for shortening the period of the vision of the Abuja Treaty. Its overall objective is to provide an analytical research publication that defines frameworks for African governments, the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities, towards accelerating the establishment of the African Common Market through the speedy removal of all tariff and non-tariff barriers; obstacles to free movement of people, investments and factors of production in general across Africa, and through fast-tracking the creation of an African continental Free Trade Area.

Assessing Regional Integration in Africa (ARIA) V: Towards the Continental Free Trade Area, Customs Union and Common Market

The index measures volume changes in the production of an economy, and therefore provides a measurement that is free of influences of price changes, making it an indicator of choice for many applications. This publication revisits the original manual on Index Numbers of Industrial Production, published by the United Nations in 1950. It takes into account methodological developments in the field of index number calculation over the past decades and describes new recommended methodological standards for the compilation of index numbers of industrial production. In addition to outlining the standard methodology, it also provides practical guidance for actual steps in the index number calculation and presents recommended methods for each industry in its scope to assist countries in producing highquality short-term economic indicators that are also internationally comparable.

Africa Investor Report 2011

In the context of the ongoing fallout from the global financial crisis, income distribution is back to the centre of economic analysis and policies. This publication explores the linkages between income distribution, growth and development. It analyzes the evolution of income inequality over the last decades in different regions and groups of countries. It also examines the explanations given for the widespread rise of inequality. The report questions the thesis that rising inequality is a necessary condition for successful development. Based on a comprehensive theory of economic policy elaborated in former reports, this book argues that only inclusive development policies create the conditions for sustainable and rapid growth.

Export Quality Management: A Guide for Small and Medium-sized Exporters - Second Edition
