Biography of the author Alan Hunt CMG, FCIM, FRGS (UK) is a former Ambassador and Director of the University of Oxford Foreign Service Programme. His career in the British Diplomatic Service included postings in Tehran, Jedda, Panama, Madrid, Oslo, Buenos Aires (where he played a central role in the restoration of diplomatic relations after the Falklands conøict) and D½sseldorf (where he was Consul-General and Director-General for Trade and Investment Promotion in Germany). During postings in the Foreign and Commonwealth Of÷ce in London he handled international oil policy and relations with East Africa and Southern Europe, was Senior Civilian Directing Staff Member at the Royal College of Defence Studies and Director Overseas Trade. His ÷nal posting was as High Commissioner in Singapore. After leaving the Diplomatic Service he was for seven years Director of the Foreign Service Programme at Oxford University. He is now an author and consultant, in which capacity he also lectures on diplomacy and runs training courses in diplomatic practice. He is also a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe. He was made a CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George) in 1990 and is an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Alan Hunt holds a First Class Honours Degree in European Studies from the University of East Anglia.
