viii Marcus J. Kurtz is an associate professor of political science at the Ohio State University. He has research and teaching interests in the areas of comparative politics, democratization, political economy and development, with a focus on Latin America. His publications have appeared in leading disciplinary and multidisciplinary international journals. His book is entitled Free Market Democracy and the Chilean and Mexican Countryside. Martin Painter is a professor of public administration as well as university coordinator (strategic plan) in the Office of the Provost at the City University of Hong Kong and the director of the Governance in Asia Research Centre. Previously he worked at the University of Sydney, where from 1996 to 2000 he was head of the Department of Government and Public Administration. Andrew M. Schrank is a professor of political science and sociology at the University of New Mexico. He studies the organization, performance and regulation of industry, especially in Latin America. His articles have appeared in various disciplinary and interdisciplinary journals. His forthcoming book (co-authored with Josh Whitford) from Princeton University Press is entitled When Networks Fail: Uncovering Hidden Weaknesses in the Global Economy. Jomo Kwame Sundaram has been Assistant-Secretary-General for Economic Development in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs since 2005. In 2007, he was awarded the Wassily Leontief Prize. During 2008–9, he served as a member of the [Stiglitz] Commission of Experts on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System. He was founder chair of International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs).
