Multidimensional Poverty and Child Well-being in Wealthy Nations
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) - Innocenti Research Centre (IRC) Report Card series provokes debate on child well-being in wealthy countries. It provides an important tool to address critical issues affecting child disadvantage in the industrialized world. Since 2000, the IRC has released nine issues of the series, each addressing different aspects of the living conditions of children and adolescents in economically advanced countries. All the Report Cards are built around a "league table", ranking countries according to their performance on a key child indicator or group of indicators. The tenth issue of the Report Card series (RC10) investigates poverty and vulnerability among children in rich countries using a perspective that goes beyond the traditional monetary approach and includes measures of multidimensional poverty. The research uses the most up-to-date data for the most economically advanced countries.

Despite the rise in recent decades in the average income level, economic insecurity has also increased. True for both developing and developed countries, this increasing economic insecurity is harmful for human welfare for several reasons. Job and income insecurity directly affect the material and psychological well-being of people. Economic volatility and high uncertainty also tend to exert negative influence on productive investment, thereby hurting long-term development. This book sheds light on the causes of economic insecurity and how better functioning financial systems, more effective macroeconomic policies and extended micro-financing schemes could mitigate the degree of economic insecurity in developing countries and overcome many of its negative consequences.

Report on the World Social Situation 2011: The Global Social Crisis
This Report explores the social impact of the great recession and warns of the possibility of continuing global social crisis in the face of increasing fiscal consolidation and austerity measures, which threaten the sustainability of a recovery. The effects of the financial and economic crisis on social progress have been sharp, widespread, and deep. Given the fragility of the economic recovery and uneven progress in major economies, social conditions are expected to recover slowly. Increased poverty, hunger and unemployment due to the crisis will continue to affect billions of people in many developed and developing countries for years to come. Austerity measures in response to high government debt in some advanced economies are not only threatening public sector employment and social expenditure, but are also making the recovery more uncertain and fragile.
Industrial Development Report 2011: Industrial Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Wealth Creation - Capturing Environmental, Economic and Social Dividends
This Report demonstrates that a more sustainable energy future is within our reach, and that industrial energy efficiency is key. It shows how industrial energy efficiency can make a difference by providing a detailed comprehensive global assessment of potentials, technologies, economic benefits, as well as cost and barriers to be removed. It provides an overview of the policy instruments most useful for developing economies. This innovative work also reminds us that we must act now if we are to unlock the potential of current and emerging energy efficiency technologies. The opportunities are significant — by reducing energy inputs per unit of output we will benefit from improvements in standards of living while protecting the environment.
Public Works Programmes (PWPs) are widely implemented in developing countries, often with funding from major international donor agencies. They provide employment for the chronically poor while creating assets for the state, offering a welfare transfer which is also a tangible economic investment. This book critically explores the concept of the PWPs and questions their social protection performance in the context of chronic poverty. It reviews over 200 PWPs in eastern and southern Africa, using original research drawn from extensive field analysis, interviews and survey work, and examines case studies of six international PWPs — in India, Argentina, Ireland, Ethiopia, Indonesia and the USA. It is argued that the current PWPs approach may not look so attractive from the beneficiary's perspective.

This Report, one of the few monitoring global trends related to information and communication technologies (ICTs) from a development perspective, is a valuable reference source for policymakers in developing countries. In the 2011 edition, special attention is given to the role of ICTs in accelerating private sector development (PSD) in developing countries. Many national and donor strategies related to PSD fail to take adequate account of the ICT potential, which has greatly expanded thanks to changes in the global ICT landscape. The Report identifies four facets of the ICT-PSD interface: 1) ICT infrastructure as a factor in the investment climate; 2) ICT use by the private sector; 3) the ICT sector as a part of the private sector; and 4) ICT use in interventions aimed at facilitating PSD.

Development Financing and Economic Insecurity
This Report surveys research and policy in the field of gender and economic development, with particular emphasis on economic literature and practice. It begins with a history of gender and economic development concepts, and includes a statistical overview of women and men in developing economies, covering data on employment, Millennium Development Goals, and composite indices of gender equality. It contrasts standard economic approaches to macroeconomy with one that reflects how meso-level institutions like markets or the public sector are themselves "bearers of gender", explicitly incorporating the production of human capabilities in the domestic sector.

Agribusiness for Africa's Prosperity
In recent years, a renewed focus on agriculture has been evident in policy and development agendas for the African continent, yet little knowledge has been generated on the interlinkages of production, agroindustry and markets, as well as the potentials and challenges for developing these. This publication analyzes the challenges, the potential and opportunities of African agribusiness in the current period of dramatic changes in global agro-industrial markets, and builds a case for agribusiness development as a path to Africa's prosperity. Written by international experts, from agribusiness practitioners, to academic experts and UN technical agencies, this volume fills what the United Nations Industrial Development Organization perceived as a significant gap in knowledge concerning these issues.
