Amphetamines and Ecstasy: 2011 Global ATS Assessment

Forthcoming

This Report, which is produced in triennial intervals, provides an overview of the global manufacture, trade and use of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) and ecstasy, highlighting the nature of the ATS threat and the impact of ATS use on society. Sections show regional trends for Asia, Oceania, the Near and Middle East/South-West Asia, Europe, Africa, North America and Central and South America and the Caribbean. Focus is on countries and regions where available data suggest that the most significant changes have occurred over the past five years. Beyond this regional focus, the Report highlights manufacturing methods and trends in precursors. The constraints of ATS-related data gathering, the central role of qualitative information and forensic data to understand the range of products available in illicit ATS markets are also covered in the Report.

Opiates originating in Afghanistan threaten the health and well-being of people in many regions of the world. Their illicit trade also adversely impacts governance, security, stability and development — in Afghanistan, its neighbours, the broader region and beyond. This publication covers worldwide flows of Afghan opiates, as well as trafficking in precursor chemicals used to turn opium into heroin. By providing a better understanding of the global impact of Afghan opiates, this Report can help the international community identify vulnerabilities and possible countermeasures.

Population Situation Analysis (PSA): A Conceptual and Methodological Guide

The Population Situation Analysis (PSA) provides the basis for an integrated appraisal of the population and reproductive health dynamics and their impacts on poverty, inequality and development. By integrating a micro- and macro-analytical approach, the PSA clarifies the interactions between individual behaviour and demographic dynamics. The PSA responds to demand by countries that international cooperation should promote national capacity-building and recognize national ownership and leadership as prerequisites for development, in accordance with the principles agreed at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Millennium Declaration. This manual contributes to more efficient evidencebased programming, which relies on increased capacity for data generation and new databases.

30: UNAIDS Outlook Report 2011

UNAIDS commemorates 30 years of the AIDS epidemic by publishing a compilation of 30 milestones, thoughts, images, words, artworks, breakthroughs, inspirations and ideas in response. The special edition of Outlook illustrates timelines on three issues that have shaped the AIDS response — the evolution of access to antiretroviral treatment, HIV/Tuberculosis and the use of condoms. It presents a range of posters from around the world that show the diverse visual strategies used over the years to communicate messages on AIDS awareness and safer sex. Two chapters in the book bring out the human face of the epidemic. Six activists who have lost their lives to AIDS are remembered through their writings, speeches and recollections by their friends. The book also presents an analysis of current HIV prevention approaches, human rights and AIDS, gender disparities, HIV data, resources available for the AIDS response and recent advancements in the field of science.

State of the World Population 2010: From Conflict and Crisis to Renewal - Generations of Change In 2000, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325, recognizing the vulnerability of

women and girls to violence during and after armed conflict, and the absence (or low level) of women’s representation in efforts to prevent war, build peace and restore devastated societies. This Report highlights how women in conflict and post-conflict situations — as well as in emergencies or protracted crises — are faring a decade later. It is constructed around interviews and reporting in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haiti, Jordan, Liberia, the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, Timor-Leste and Uganda, which are rebuilding with limited resources. Some have experienced profound social changes as a result of war and displacement.

Many illicit drug markets have reached global dimensions and require control strategies on a comparable scale. In that context, there is a need to better understand these transnational markets and the manner in which they operate. The annual Report, produced by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, is a contribution towards that objective. It provides an overview of the illicit drug situation worldwide and regionally, analytical discussions of the key transnational drug markets and statistical trends for all major drug categories.

This book provides evidence of how much we have achieved in providing universal access and weighs that against our vision for the future: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. This Report contains scientific analysis, personal insights from world leaders and the results of extensive national and regional consultations at the front lines of the AIDS response. While perspectives differ, one simple truth emerges: we cannot break the arc of this epidemic — where five people were newly infected for every three starting treatment in 2010 — if we adopt a "business as usual" approach.
